Chennaiyin FC sign young winger Vincy Barretto for the 2022-23 ISL season

0

Chennai, June 1 Chennaiyin FC has roped in young winger Vincy Barretto on a multi-year deal ahead of the 2022-23 Indian Super League.

The Goa-born footballer will join the two-time champions after a successful debut ISL campaign with Kerala Blasters last season.

Barretto contributed to Kerala Blasters’ runners-up finish with two goals from 17 matches, which also includes a left-footed screamer against Hyderabad FC from outside the box in a league game.

It is also Chennaiyin FC’s first transfer this year.

“We are happy to bring in Vincy Barretto who will add youthful energy to our attack. At the age of 22, he is already known for his capabilities. This is a very positive signing for us leading into season 9,” said Chennaiyin FC co-owner Vita Dani on the arrival of the youngster on the side.

Barretto recently had an impressive outing in the inaugural edition of the Reliance Foundation Development League, where he struck three goals from seven matches for the Blasters.

A product of Dempo SC, Barretto will add speed and depth to the wings for the Marina Machans. He will also provide the offensive punch and support to the forward line by creating goal-scoring opportunities.

“I’m very excited to join Chennaiyin FC, a club that has already been successful in its little history. My only goal is to win more titles with the club,” said the 22-year-old.

After being part of the Dempo SC’s youth set-up, Barretto received his first senior contract with FC Goa’s reserve side at the age of 18. He spent three years there, winning the 2018-19 Goa Professional League and also making nine appearances in the I-League second division.

Later, he moved to an I-League club Gokulam Kerala and played a crucial role in their maiden title-winning campaign on his debut season in 2020-21. His skilled show captured the attention of Kerala Blasters last year with whom he also played the 2021 Durand Cup.

Chennaiyin FC has already signed star Indian midfielder Anirudh Thapa for a fresh two-year deal. And now with the addition of Barretto, the club will look to promote young Indian talents and build a strong squad for the upcoming ISL seasons.

“We are thrilled to be able to support the development of young female players by holding the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa on the eve of the senior event,” said ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley.

“The ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup has been the stepping stone for so many of the world’s best male players, so we are excited to see how the inaugural U19 women’s edition will drive the growth of women’s cricket and improve the number of elite international playing opportunities for females at this age group in the years to come.”

Asia Regional Development Manager Aminul Islam said he was looking forward to the Qualifier in his region, and believes it will be an effective tool in identifying upcoming talent.

“We are embarking on a very exciting journey where we will see some of the most exciting young female talents in Asia competing in Malaysia next week,” he said.

“The participating teams are all hopeful of making history by competing at the first-ever ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, and there’s no question we’ll see some excellent cricket take place to determine who qualifies. BTS speaks with President Joe Biden about anti-Asian hate crimes

0

Los Angeles, June 1 For the final day of Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage, K-pop supergroup BTS stopped by the White House on Tuesday to speak with US President Joe Biden about Asian inclusion and representation.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre introduced the group and RM kicked off the press conference in English by introducing themselves and thanking the White House and Biden for the opportunity to speak on “the important issues of anti-Asian hate crimes, Asian inclusion, and diversity,” reports ‘Variety’.

Then, each of the guys took turns speaking in Korean with Jin and Jimin expressing how honored they were to be standing for their community at the White House on the last day of AAPI Month.

Jimin said: “We were devastated by the recent surge of hate crimes to put a stop to this and support the cause, we’d like to take this opportunity to (lend our voices).”

J Hope added: “We are here today thanks to our Army – our fans worldwide – who have different nationalities and cultures and use different languages. We are truly and always grateful.”

Jungkook concluded their speech by sharing that the band was “still surprised that music created by South Korean artists reaches so many people around the world… we believe music is always an amazing and wonderful unifier of all things.”

Suga also added, “It’s not wrong to be different, equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences.”

V said: “We hope today is one step forward to respecting and understanding each and everyone as a valuable person.”

In total, over a quarter-million people tuned in to see the band speak on the White House’s YouTube Livestream.

Amid last year’s spike of anti-Asian hate crimes in the US, BTS spoke out about their own experience with discrimination via Twitter saying: “We cannot put into words the pain of becoming the subject of hatred and violence for such a reason. Our own experiences are inconsequential compared to the events that have occurred over the past few weeks. But these experiences were enough to make us feel powerless and chip away our self-esteem.”

In May of 2021, Biden signed a bipartisan bill geared at addressing the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes into law in May 2021. The bill was introduced to aid the reporting of hate crimes, making them more easily accessible at the local and state levels by boosting public outreach.

As a part of this year’s AANHPI Heritage Month, Biden issued a proclamation late last month about the contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to the country’s history and culture.

He and Vice President Kamala Harris – who is half Indian – also hosted a White House reception earlier in the month that included US Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

Two days later, the White House lauded the passage of legislation to establish a commission to study the possible creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture.

In recent months the President has welcomed several performers, including Olivia Rodrigo and the Jonas Brothers, to the White House, most often as part of vaccination efforts.

The US to send medium-range rocket systems to Ukraine

0

Washington, June 1 The US will send medium-range rocket systems to Ukraine in a new security assistance package, senior administration officials have said.

A $700-million weapon package is to be formally unveiled on Wednesday, including High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which are to enable Ukraine to fire more precisely at targets in its eastern part, the officials were quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Ukrainian officials had offered assurances that the HIMARS would not be used to strike targets inside the Russian territory.

The announcement came amid reports that the US was preparing to aid Ukraine with advanced long-range rocket systems, something Kiev is craving in its fights against Russia in the eastern Donbass region.

Instead of those long-range rocket systems that can travel as far as 186 miles (300 km), the United States is sending what it considers medium-range rockets to Ukraine, ones that can travel about 50 miles (80 km), according to the officials.

Also on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden wrote in a guest essay carried by The New York Times that his administration will continue to “provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine”.

The US does not seek “a war” between NATO and Russia, Biden said.

On Monday, he ruled out the possibility of Washington sending to Ukraine “rocket systems that can strike into Russia.”

Salman’s security beefed up in the wake of Moosewala’s murder

0

Mumbai, June 1 Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s security has been stepped up following the murder of Punjabi singer and rapper Sidhu Moosewala.

As per a media report, the strengthening of security comes after gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail, has emerged as the key accused in Moosewala’s murder.

A senior police official told the media that the Mumbai police has enhanced the overall security of the star to ensure he’s safe from the activities of the Bishnoi’s gang that operates from Rajasthan.

For the uninitiated, Salman was earlier on Bishnoi’s radar after the infamous blackbuck poaching case during the shoot of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’. Bishnoi community considers blackbuck to be a sacred animal and Salman’s involvement in poaching had hurt the community’s sentiments.

Rahul alias Sunni, one of Bishnoi’s close associates arrested in 2020 for murder, said that they had hatched a plan to kill Salman and had even visited Mumbai to conduct a recce for the murder.

Sidhu Moosewala was murdered in Punjab’s Mansa district on Sunday as he was intercepted by assailants while he was driving an SUV.

Salman will be next seen in ‘Tiger 3’ along with Katrina Kaif. He has also been working on ‘Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali’.

Missing the trophy yet again but RCB bowlers cover themselves in glory

0

Mumbai, June 1 Royal Challengers Bangalore may have been unlucky one more time in their bid to lift the Indian Premier League trophy, but three of their bowlers — Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, Australian pace stalwart Josh Hazlewood and the ever-dependable Harshal Patel — were at the forefront of their campaign in the just-concluded season.

The combined effort of the three bowlers, and of course the efforts of their death-overs batter Dinesh Karthik, were the positives for the Faf du Plessis-led side as it aims to regroup for the next season.

In fact, Hasaranga eventually missed the ‘Purple Cap’ by a whisker to his former teammate, Yuzvendra Chahal, but the kind of domination that he wove over the span of the tournament was too overwhelming to be refuted. The Sri Lankan eventually finished IPL 2022 with a haul of 26 wickets at a superb economy rate of 7.54.

While Josh Hazlewood did earn the dubious distinction of being the most expensive bowler in IPL 2022, with figures of 4-0-64-0 against Punjab Kings in a league match, the tall Australian pacer was otherwise an asset in the death overs. More than choking the chase frequently apart from his immaculate powerplay spells, the 31-year-old finished his campaign with 20 wickets from 12 matches at an economy rate of 8.1.

Not to forget the ever-dependable Harshal Patel, the Purple Cap winner last season and the biggest asset RCB possess. The pace bowler mixed his weapons intelligently, producing the all-important mishits, and just when it felt that someone could threaten to take the game away from RCB, he would plug in with those crucial spells. He eventually ended his campaign on a high with a haul of 19 wickets at an economy rate of 7.67.

Andhra Horror: Techie kills wife, body fished out of the lake after 5 months

0

Tirupati, May 31 A techie brutally murdered his wife, stuffed her body in a suitcase, and dumped it in a lake in the temple city of Tirupati.

The chilling facts came to light on Tuesday, nearly five months after he committed the crime.

Police recovered the body of Padma from the lake in Venkatapuram on the outskirts of the town.

Police said they have arrested Venugopal, a software engineer currently employed with a firm in Hyderabad.

The techie had been misleading his in-laws that the Padma is with him in Hyderabad. As she did not even speak to them over the phone for nearly five months, Padma’s parents grew suspicious and lodged a missing complaint with the police.

During the interrogation, Venugopal confessed to killing the Padma on January 5, the same day he brought her home from her parents’ house, where she was living for two years due to a marital dispute.

Venugopal, who had even filed a divorce petition in the court, told Padma’s parents that he wants to take her home and forget whatever happened in the past.

He later informed them that he took her to Hyderabad where they are living together.

Padma’s parents believed him as they thought Venugopal is a reformed man. Whenever they called him and wanted to speak to the Padma, he used to make some excuse. They started suspecting him and finally lodged a complaint with the police two days ago.

A police officer said Venugopal married the Padma in April 2019. After the marriage, they were living in Chennai where he was working with an IT company. A few months after the marriage, differences cropped up between their post and she returned to her parent’s home.

Both sides have filed court cases against each other. Venugopal had filed a case for divorce while the Padma had approached the Women’s Commission.

Police investigations revealed that after bringing the Padma to his house on January 5, Venugopal thrashed her with a stick, resulting in her death.

The incident happened in the presence of Venugopal’s parents and a friend. They later tied the body and stuffed it into a large suitcase.

Venugopal then carried the suitcase to the lake, dumped it there, and left Tirupati with his parents.

Padma’s relatives alleged that Venugopal had been harassing her from day one for more dowry. They demanded the death penalty for Venugopal.

In a similar case in Tirupati last year, a man had killed his 27-year-old techie wife, stuffed the body in a suitcase, and had set it afire after dumping it in a remote place.

Srikanth Reddy had tried to fool the relatives by saying his wife died of Covid-19 and the hospital authorities cremated the body.

Bhuvaneswari was working as a software engineer in a company in Hyderabad. The shocking crime came to light after police found a charred body and took up an investigation.
