Inspired by KGF’s ‘Rocky Bhai’, 15-yr-old Hyderabad lad tries smoking, lands in hospital

0

Hyderabad, May 28 After smoking a pack of cigarettes for the first time, a teenager in Hyderabad, developed a severe cough and throat ache complications needing medical attention.

Doctors at Century Hospital, a leading multi-specialty healthcare provider in the city, on Saturday announced they have successfully treated a teenager who inspired by “Rocky Bhai”, a character of the KGF movie series, smoked cigarettes and fell severely sick. The boy needed immediate medical attention to provide relief from the after-effects of smoking cigarettes, along with strong counseling.

A resident of Rajendranagar in Hyderabad, the 15-yr-old boy, whose name has been withheld to protect the child’s identity, was rushed to Century Hospital when his parents learned that he smoked a packet of cigarettes after watching the KGF2 movie three times in just two days. The boy watched the movie in the second week of its release in theaters and was inspired by the “style” of the lead character ‘Rocky Bhai’ and wanted to ape him by smoking for the first time, only to fall severely sick in the process, the hospital officials stated.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Rohith Reddy Pathuri, Consultant Pulmonologist, Century Hospital said: “Teenagers do get easily influenced by characters like ‘Rocky Bhai’. In this case, this young boy took to smoking and fell severely sick after consuming a full packet of cigarettes. Movies are a highly influencing element of our society, and it is important that moviemakers and actors have a moral responsibility to not glamorize acts like smoking or chewing tobacco, or consuming alcohol. Characters like ‘Rocky Bhai’ have a cult following and young minds do get influenced by the acts of these demigods on the screen.”

“Parents of adolescents must ensure they keep a watch on what their children are doing, and what factors are influencing their child’s acts. Instead of regretting later, it is important parents play a role in creating awareness about the ill effects of acts like smoking tobacco and consuming alcohol. Beating up children post the act, like in this case, might not always produce the best result,” added Dr. Rohith Reddy.

Doctors say that smoking during childhood and adolescence causes significant health problems among young people, including an increase in the number and severity of respiratory illnesses, decreased physical fitness, and potential effects on lung growth and function. Most importantly, this is when an addiction to smoking takes hold, often lasting into and sometimes throughout adulthood.

Now fire breaks out at EV maker Ather Energy’s premises in Chennai

0

Chennai/New Delhi, May 28 As EV fires continue to make headlines in the country, a fire broke out at electric scooter manufacturer Ather Energy’s experience centre in Chennai.

The company said in a tweet that there has been a minor fire incident on its premises in Chennai.

“While some property and scooters got affected, thankfully all employees are safe and things are under control. The experience centre will be operational shortly,” the EV company said late on Friday.

It, however, did not reveal what caused the fire incident. The company was awaiting a report from the local fire brigade officials.

This was the first time Ather Energy came in news for a fire incident as several top EV players are facing government inquiry over battery explosions and fire incidents across the country.

A Hero Photon Electric scooter in Odisha caught fire this week while it was being charged. The incident left the scooter partially damaged.

“When contacted, the customer explained that he heard abnormal cracking sounds and discovered that fumes were coming from the electric switchboard of the home, adjacent to the e-scooter and sparks were continuously falling onto the floor and a can of paint lying nearby,” the company said in a statement.

“By the time he went on to switch off the mains and get back to try and put off the fire, it spread and burnt the rear part of the scooter and some household belongings,” it added.

EV makers such as Ola Electric, Pure EV, Jitendra EV Tech and Okinawa have been involved in earlier EV fire incidents.

Meanwhile, a government panel probing EV fire incidents is set to submit its report next week.

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) which was tasked with investigating EV fire incidents by the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry, has found serious defects in the batteries, including the designs of the battery packs and modules.

These defects occur because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, Ola Electric and Boom Motors may have used “lower-grade materials to cut costs”.

The Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) at the DRDO has submitted its fact-finding report to the Ministry.

Earlier this month, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which comes under the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, sent notices to Pure EV and Boom Motors after their e-scooters exploded in April.

The consumer watchdog is also examining more cases of e-scooter fires and will serve similar notices to other EV makers too.

PM Modi plays Gujarati card in Rajkot

0

Rajkot, May 28 Prime Minister Narendra Modi, keeping the election year in mind, smartly played Mahatma Gandhi’s Swadeshi card, reminding him how the Sardar Sarovar project was completed against all odds. He was in Rajkot on Saturday to inaugurate a hospital.

Modi said that before 2001, Gujarat had not seen development and growth, but it was due to his initiative, that the state has now developed in education, industries, and infrastructure.

Playing the regional card, Modi said his government abides by Mahatma Gandhi’s Swadeshi ideology and so is implementing Swadeshi Arth-niti. Gandhi and Patel were always concerned about the upliftment of the poor, and this is the cause upheld by the Modi government. Reaching out to locals, he addressed Gujarati.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the 200-bed K.D. Parvadia hospital at Atkot in Rajkot district of Saurashtra region. The super-specialty hospital is developed with an investment of Rs 40 crore. The facility was established by the Leuva Patidar leader, BJP’s Bharat Boghra, and his family. Boghra is vice president of BJP’s Gujarat unit.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said that before 2001, there were just nine Medical colleges with 1100 seats, but in 21 years, the state has 30 medical colleges with 8000 seats. The government targets one medical college in every district so that no poor family’s child dreaming to be a doctor is disappointed due to the unavailability of seats.

Without naming the Congress rule, he criticized that in past, industrial development was limited between Vapi and Vadodara and the pharma sector remained in just one or two districts. He added that the previous governments never focused on expanding trade, businesses, and industries, which his government did.

He even alleged that when he was Chief Minister, Gujarat’s projects were not cleared by the (Congress-led) Centre and that Congress was anti-Gujarat.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, three crore poor families were allotted pakka ghar, 10 crores got toilets, nine crore women were given gas cylinders, and 2.50 crore houses got electrification.

It was further enumerated that during the Pandemic, the Modi government gave free rations to the socially and economically backward groups, giving them a dignified life – something no other government had ever done.

Year-long NTR’s 100th birth anniversary celebrations begin

0

Hyderabad, May 28 The one-hundredth birth anniversary celebrations of legendary actor, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder, and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh N.T. Rama Rao (NTR) began on a grand note, across Andhra Pradesh and beyond, on Saturday.

The celebrations will continue over the next year in Andhra Pradesh and beyond.

NTR is credited with promoting the Telugu identity and self-respect at a time when all South Indians were clubbed as ‘Madrasis’.

His children include Telugu actor Balakrishna and former union minister Daggubati Puranderswari. Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is a son-in-law of NTR.

Balakrishna had earlier announced that the family members would tour across the world to participate in the celebrations which will continue till May 23, 2023.

In Hyderabad, several members of the NTR clan including his grandson and film star Jr NTR made a beeline for NTR Ghat, the patriarch’s final resting place, to pay homage.

While Balakrishna is kickstarting the celebrations from NTR’s birthplace, the TDP has arranged a massive public meeting at Ongole where the Mahanadu, or organizational meeting is being held.

Born on May 28, 1923, at Nandikooru in Andhra Pradesh, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) cemented his position as the doyen of the Telugu cinema industry. He was famous and revered for his on-screen portrayal of Lord Rama, Krishna, and myriad Hindu gods, mythological, and historical figures. He also effortlessly portrayed modern characters as well. Apart from acting, NTR also tried his hand at the direction and production of movies.

But it was as a politician that NTR made his mark. Single-handedly setting up the Telugu Desam Party, he made his way to the record books when he campaigned for nine months, won the Assembly elections, and became the first non-Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1983. He became chief minister for the third and final time in December 1994.

He was a leading member of the National Front Alliance which formed the government at the Centre in 1989.

NTR died on January 18, 1996, in Hyderabad.

IPL 2022: Top-class balance, role clarity the ingredients of success for Titans

0

Ahmedabad, May 28 Before the start of IPL 2022, many hadn’t given Gujarat Titans a chance to be in the playoffs, let alone the final of the tournament.

But, as things stand now, the Hardik Pandya-led side is in Sunday’s title clash at their home ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium, against inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals. The ingredients of success for Gujarat, as per leg-spinner Rashid Khan, have been down to two things: top-class balance and clarity in roles to the players.

“To me, it is not important that you have all the best players in the eleven, that is something which is not important to have in your team. The kind of players you need to have, you need to give them certain roles in the team. If you have the best five-six players who bat at the top order and are not able to bat at number five or six, I don’t think you can manage that team well,” said Rashid in the pre-final virtual press conference.

Rashid further explained that with everyone in the team made clear about their roles before the start of the tournament, it helped in getting the required balance for the playing eleven. “More important has been the balance we have in the team, which has helped to take us in this position because it was very clear to each and every player what is my position, where I will bat and even knew that this is the situation I will face in the game and be fully prepared for that.

“There was no confusion in the players’ minds that what will be the responsibility in my team and what role I will play. It was very clear from game one, which was really important for the bowling unit too, that ‘yes, this is my responsibility, this is where I will bowl’.”

“So, that’s really important than you have the best teams. The balance of the team has been top-class, that’s how we got here. We never had it in our mind before the competition where we are going to reach but it was in our mind that we have to play good cricket, give 100 percent, be well-prepared for the game, and train and practice hard to have a positive mindset and enjoy the game.

“We are so happy to be here but we will keep things simple for the final: – just go there, express our skills and enjoy the game.”

In this season, Gujarat has had eight players who picked Player of the Match awards, with Rashid winning once and left-handed batter David Miller bagging the award twice. Miller, who won Gujarat a direct ticket to the final with an unbeaten 38-ball 68, feels that fellow finisher, all-rounder Rahul Tewatia, and pacer Mohammed Shami have been amongst the players who have contributed to the side’s consistent run with little but important contributions.

“It obviously has been a really good season. But the standouts for me have been Rahul Tewatia. You talk about the performances which didn’t get the man of the match awards. With his two sixes, we needed 12 off the last two balls, he won the game there (against Punjab Kings).

“Someone like Shami has bowled incredibly well like he’s put us in really good positions in the power-play despite not getting man-of-the-match awards and just sort of setting the tone as a bowling unit. It’s really tough to single out different players as lots of guys have put their hand up throughout the season in small moments that have contributed towards a lot of wins.”

Rashid, too, agreed with Miller’s views and remarked that all eleven members making efforts to win matches has been more huge than grabbing individual awards. “It’s not just depending on one player like he takes four-five wickets or makes 80-90 runs in each game to win it for us. It has been the contribution of all the eleven players and that is something which has meant that we are here.

“Even if it’s a single wicket or an over which changes the momentum of the game in certain times, that is also why the opposition teams never made plans against us because the whole eleven takes the responsibility, which has also meant that we have been on the winning side maximum times.

“We understood our roles and responsibility; it’s not about getting the man of the match. It’s just about I have to perform well when the team needs, like good overs or a couple of wickets. That is something which matters rather than to get the man of the match.”

‘Balika Vadhu 2’ star Sagar Parekh on playing a spoilt brat in ‘Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan’

0

Mumbai, May 28 Actor Sagar Parekh, who has been part of shows like ‘Balika Vadhu 2’, ‘Tera Yaar Hoon Main’, ‘Rajaa Betaa’, and ‘Internet Wala Love’, will be next seen in the fourth season of the popular web series ‘Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan’.

Speaking more about his role and the series Sagar says: “‘Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan’ is coming up with its 4th season. It would be a web show on Voot originals. The audience will be seeing a whole new cast. The character I am playing is one of the most important in the show.”

“I am playing Yuvan, who is a spoilt brat and comes from a very rich background in Himachal. Though he is a soft-looking guy, he is very rugged by his nature. This is his biggest flaw and for the first time in my career, I am playing a character like this. Yuvan is a victim of substance abuse and through his character, we will understand the power of resistance that everyone carries within themselves.”

He also adds: “This show has been running for almost a decade. It’s rare that a show does this well. I feel this is one of the best youth-based shows. When it first aired on MTV I was not even an actor. And I never thought I would be a part of it.”

Before this Sagar has done ‘Babbar Ka Tabbar’ for ZEE5 for both seasons.

Sagar also shares his take on the OTT content and what he likes about it.

He says: “There is a lot of creativity in the process and as an actor, you grow while doing web series. This is my second and I am sure after this web show, I will evolve as a better actor and will get many more opportunities.”

Interestingly the series has some bold scenes and Sagar talks about them.

“I have a few makeout scenes but we are going to cheat as I am not comfortable and I am still exploring the process of that. Otherwise, I do not smoke in real life however I have to smoke on screen. This is something that web series make us do. they pull off the actors from their comfort zones. I am not scared of it and I will do that since it’s my job.”

Soon the cast and crew of the series will be in Goa to shoot. So how excited you are about that?

“It’s always an excitement when you have outdoor schedules and more so when it’s Goa. Then you shoot, party and chill up, gel up with your co-actors. So the bond happens at a different level. I am quite excited. The monsoon has already started there and it’s one of the best seasons to go there.”

Sagar also shares his preference as an audience and what exactly he likes to watch.

“I love to watch thrillers and Sci-fi based shows and also sometimes action-based shows. ‘Money- Heist and ‘Breaking Bad’ are my favorites.”

Monkeypox may slow down but not be eliminated: Report

0

London, May 28 Amid the rising number of monkeypox cases, a new report says that it may never be eliminated because too many infections are going under the radar, and pet animals could continue to harbor the virus.

Monkeypox may now be endemic in the UK and Europe, leading experts have warned as the virus normally confined to areas of Africa continues to spread around the world, reports the Daily Mail.

Adam Kucharski, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said it was unlikely the current outbreak would spiral into a pandemic like Covid because it spreads through prolonged close contact.

But the epidemiologist, who is also a member of the UK’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), warned the “biggest risk” is that cases will “not be eliminated in some places”.

He said any persistent transmission increases the risk that the virus, closely related to smallpox, could be passed onto pets, meaning there will be permanent reservoirs of infection, as is the case in Africa.

EU health chiefs have already acknowledged this threat and are considering a cull for all hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs owned by monkeypox patients.

In the UK, officials are also expected to release guidance telling infected Britons to keep their distance from family pets.

On Friday, a World Health Organization report said that the virus has spread to more than 20 countries, with about 200 confirmed cases and over 100 suspected cases in nations where it is typically not found.

IPL 2022 season for the Royals is all about Shane Warne, says Samson

0

Ahmedabad, May 28 Rajasthan Royals sent out a heartfelt message to all those who believe in the team to also have the late Shane Warne in their thoughts when the side takes on Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2022 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Sunday.

The legendary Australian spinner, who guided the team to its maiden IPL title in 2008, died recently due to a suspected heart attack while vacationing in Thailand, and since then, there has been a groundswell of emotion in the Royals camp, which wants to win the title and dedicate it to the spin wizard.

Opener Jos Buttler, the architect of the Royals’ seven-wicket win against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday night, asked his skipper Sanju Samson for his thoughts on the late cricketer’s legacy.

“Absolutely. The tournament, I think, right from the start has been for him (Warne). And, I think we need to take one more step for him (win the title). I think it’s really special (being in the IPL final). I don’t want to talk much about it but we are just one step closer to doing something special for the late Shane Warne,” said Samson after the win against RCB in Qualifier 2.

Buttler, who scored an unbeaten 106 off 60 balls on Friday, said he was delighted with the outcome of the match.

“Obviously delighted, it was a great day for us, amazing crowd, amazing occasion and we finally won the toss which I think was pretty crucial, so feeling good,” said the England cricketer, who has been in sublime form this season, scoring four centuries and an equal number of half-tons, and amassing a mind-boggling 824 runs in the 16 games he has played so far this season.

Samson also conceded that the team feels safe as long as Buttler is at the crease.

“We all are very safe and happy when we see Jos batting,” said Samson, adding that his task of leading the side had been made easy by experienced players such as Buttler.

“Yes, it (captaincy) becomes really easy when you have some quality cricketers around you where you don’t have to talk much to them. You just have to ask them how you are feeling and very rarely I’ve had chats with people,” added Samson.

Communal tension in coastal K’taka region rise amid hijab, Malali mosque rows

0

Bengaluru, May 28 Communal tension in the coastal Karnataka region comprising Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi is on a rise with the resurfacing of hijab controversy and the Malali temple-mosque row.

The coastal region of the state is considered to be communally sensitive and a bastion of the BJP. The region is prone to communal tensions and clashes. The hijab crisis which snowballed into an international issue started from here.

When things seemed to have settled down, the communal strife raised its ugly head again in the region with the Hindu students launching a protest against the wearing of hijab in classrooms as classes in schools and colleges resumed after the summer holidays.

The ruling BJP government has stressed that only uniforms are allowed on campus. Following the protest at the University College of Mangaluru, BJP MLA Vedavyasa Kamat is holding a meeting with College Development and Management Committee members and students. Mangaluru University Vice-Chancellor and Registrar are also participating in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has stated that they will not let Hindu activists carry one handful of soil from Malali Masjid stirring a controversy. “Don’t dream about taking over masjid,” stated Abdul Mazeed Mysuru, the state president of SDPI on Saturday.

Addressing a rally at Mangaluru, Mazeed challenged Hindu activists and Sangh Parivar members to take the traditional way of “Tambula Prashne” to ascertain on the destruction of 200 years old Suggalamma temple in Ballary by mining baron and BJP leader Janardhana Reddy.

RSS games make JD (S) and Congress parties fearful. “Sangh activists who give boycott calls of businessmen, aren’t you ashamed when Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had inked MoU with Yousuf Ali for Rs 2,000 crore?” questioned Abdul Mazeed.

M.A. Yusuf Ali is a UAE-based Indian businessman and billionaire. He is the chairman and managing director of LuLu Group International which owns the Lulu Hypermarket chain worldwide.

The ruling BJP in the country is not “pro-people”. It is pro-industrialists Ambani and Adani. The BJP is destroying the country academically, socially, and economically instead of empowering it, he charged.

However, the authorities are maintaining the status quo on the Malali Masjid premises. The temple structure surfaced at the time of renovation recently. Following the development, the court issued the status quo order. Hindu activists are claiming that they will take the legal way to reclaim this temple.

With the state already entering the election year, the issues are threatening to snowball into a major crisis situation in the entire region, say sources.

0

The students expressed anger at the authorities for allowing this despite the court and government orders.

In his statement on Saturday, the Education Minister also said that textbooks were already being printed, adding that “there is history and nationalism in the syllabus”.

He blamed the opposition Congress for creating confusion among students and also in the state regarding the textbook revision row.

Kharge slammed the state government for the inclusion of RSS founder K.B. Hedgewar’s speech in the syllabus.
