Andhra kept the Covid mortality rate at its lowest despite handicaps: Jagan

0

Amaravati, May 23 Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said on Monday that the state effectively handled the Covid-19 pandemic with the lowest mortality rate in the country despite the handicap of lacking strong tertiary care.

Speaking at a panel discussion on ‘future-proofing health system’ during World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting at Davos, he said the state focused on tracing, testing, and treating.

He said the state conducted 42 rounds of the house to house surveys over the last two years which helped the state to keep the mortality rate at 0.63 percent against the national average of more than one percent

“Within the limits we had, we did all we could do. We were more focused on tracing, testing, and treating. We were short on tertiary care. We were a newly formed state. We did not have tier-I cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, or Bangalore where private investment is huge in super-specialty hospitals,” he said.

“As we had that handicap, we wanted to get into it at an early stage. We conducted 44 rounds of house-to-house surveys. We had a robust system in place with a village secretariat and a volunteer system for every 50 houses. We have 42,000 ASHA workers dealing with health issues. This was the primary reason why we could cut the mortality rate,” said Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Stating that this was an unprecedented situation, the chief minister said it was an eye-opener for all. “The entire healthcare system has to be formidable if something like this to recur,” he said

Jagan Mohan Reddy said the governments should be focusing on preventive and curative care to improve healthcare availability, accessibility, and affordability.

The chief minister told the panel that his government is working towards this end by focusing on primary healthcare taking every village as a unit with a village clinic. Doctors at primary health centers will visit every village and become family doctors.

Jagan Reddy said despite the fund constraints, his government planned to spend Rs 16,000 crore over the next three years to strengthen the healthcare sector. He said steps were being taken to improve the healthcare delivery at district, area, and teaching hospitals.

He pointed out that the state has 11 medical colleges and his government was working to open 16 new medical colleges. All these colleges will have teaching hospitals attached to them and thus we want to strengthen the tertiary care.

Jagan Reddy also mentioned the YSR Aarogyasri Scheme. During the last three years 25 lakh people were treated free of cost in the state.

He pointed out that unlike the Central government’s scheme Ayushman Bharat, which provides insurance coverage for 1,000 procedures, YSR Aarogyasri Scheme covers 2,446 procedures. “We have distributed YSR Aarogyasri cards to 1.44 crore households out of a total 1.53 crore households in the state,” he added.

IPL 2022: Rajasthan understood the true potential of Ashwin’s abilities, says Harbhajan

0

Kolkata, May 23 Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh reckons Rajasthan Royals realized the true potential of Ravichandran Ashwin’s all-around abilities and have made use of it to the fullest in IPL 2022.

In his debut season for Rajasthan in IPL, Ashwin has delivered with the ball, picking 11 wickets, as well as excelling in the batting order as a surprising floater, as seen by him smashing an unbeaten 40 off 23 balls to lead his side to a win over Chennai Super Kings to qualify for the playoffs.

“Rajasthan Royals should be credited for showing faith in Ashwin’s all-around abilities and this is the best franchise to have ever made full use of R. Ashwin. No franchise has ever utilized Ashwin’s batting talent before but this team has promoted him up in the batting order and he’s won them a match with the bat.

“They have understood the true potential of R. Ashwin and full credit to Ashwin for reposing the faith of the franchise as well,” said Harbhajan on the ‘Cricket Live’ show on Star Sports.

At the same time, Harbhajan believes Rajasthan’s batting mainstay and leading run-getter of the tournament, Jos Buttler, had peaked early in the tournament, which is why runs have dried up from the swashbuckling England batter as he got out for single-digit scores in last three matches.

Harbhajan opined that Buttler should go back to his basics in order to regain his form and come back strongly in the Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

“Jos Buttler will have to adjust to the pitches in Kolkata. The pitches in Maharashtra have slowed down as the tournament reached its business end but the Eden Gardens track will be fresh, so not just Buttler, every batter will have to make that necessary adjustment.

“Coming to Buttler, I feel that he seems to have peaked very early and that is a reason why runs are not flowing through his bat in the latter part of the tournament. He’s a great player and he’ll have to go back to his basics to regain his form.”

Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann has backed Rajasthan to book their direct ticket to the final and has even predicted for the re-match of Qualifier 1 to happen in the final.

“Rajasthan Royals will win that first game (Qualifier 1) against Gujarat Titans. I honestly think first and second i.e. Gujarat and Rajasthan are the two best sides in this season and they could end up facing each other in that final.”

Chandrababu demands Jagan govt to slash taxes on fuel

0

Amaravati, May 23 Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national president and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday demanded that the Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government in Andhra Pradesh cut state-level taxes on petrol and diesel following the Centre’s move to slash excise duty and similar action by some states.

Naidu lauded the Central government for providing relief to the people by reducing the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. He also welcomed the Centre’s call to the state governments to decrease their state-level taxes to reduce the burden on the people.

The TDP chief demanded that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government in Andhra Pradesh decrease state-level taxes on fuel. He pointed out that Rajasthan, Odisha and Tamil Nadu governments have reduced their respective taxes on petrol and diesel.

Naidu noted that the Centre decreased fuel rates by Rs 8 per litre on petrol and by Rs 6 on diesel. Many states also responded to the Centre’s call. What wrong had the people of Andhra Pradesh committed that the YSRCP regime was not providing any additional relief on its part, he asked.

Chandrababu Naidu deplored that instead of reducing taxes to provide relief, the state government was imposing new burdens on the people by slapping new taxes. He said this had resulted in skyrocketing the prices of essential commodities. The life of the common man became miserable under the YSRCP rule.

Claiming that Andhra Pradesh stood number one in the country in development during the TDP rule, he said under the YSRCP government, the state stands number one in high prices of petrol and diesel.

Karthik terms India recall for T20Is vs South Africa ‘most special comeback’

0

Mumbai, May 23 Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik last played a T20I for India in February 2019 against Australia, months before his last appearance in the national colors came during the semifinal loss to eventual runners-up New Zealand in the ODI World Cup in England.

Now, almost three years later, Karthik scripted yet another comeback into the Indian team, this time for the five-match T20I series against South Africa in June, on the back of scintillating finishing touches for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the league stage of IPL 2022, amassing 287 at an average of 57.40 and strike-rate of 191.33. It was no surprise that Karthik termed his re-entry into the national side as the “most special comeback” of his career, coming against all odds.

“Very happy, very, very satisfying, must say that this has been probably my most special comeback because a lot of people had given up on me. For me to come back and do what I did, practice the way I did with my coach (Abhishek) Nayar, so many special things that have happened in the lead-up to the auction, and how I practiced post that,” said Karthik in a video posted by the franchise on their social media accounts.

Karthik expressed gratitude to Bangalore head coach Sanjay Bangar and director of cricket Mike Hesson for entrusting him with finishing duties. “A lot of credit also to Sanjay Bangar and Mike Hesson, I think the clarity that they gave me to execute the role that I wanted to do, in many ways (I am) indebted to RCB for picking me and giving me that role, believing in me and then me coming out here and trying to do my best for this team RCB. All in all, a very, very happy feeling. I am very excited overall.”

Karthik, set to turn 37 next week, was quick in crediting the selection committee, skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for selecting him and the skillsets he brings to the team despite many young contenders present in the country.

“Look, I think a lot of credit must go to the selectors, Rohit (Sharma) and (Rahul) Dravid because these days you have so many young boys putting up their hands for selection. To see the skillset that is there and to believe that this is the guy we need for the (Men’s T20) World Cup is a very, very humbling feeling. I know the journey is still there to the World Cup but being a part of the scheme of things and giving an opportunity for me to showcase my skills, I am very proud of it.”

Despite picking up the commentator’s mic during India’s Test tour of England and the World Test Championship final, Karthik’s self-belief and never giving up on making a comeback into the national fold resulted in dishing out consistent performances, and eventually, he was rewarded with the call-up for T20Is against the Proteas on Sunday.

“I think I started believing for a long time now, I was always believing but people around me gave me the feeling that you should not dream too much. I took up the role of a commentator for a bit and obviously that made it look like I was no more interested in trying to come back to the Indian team. But I have always said that for me, playing in the Indian team is the priority. Because I had time, I did it (commentary) and I am very excited about it (on being in India’s T20I team),” concluded the right-hander.

Payal Rohtagi calls Kangana Ranaut ‘rude’ and also targets ‘Dhaakad’ box office collection

0

Mumbai, May 23 TV actress Payal Rohatgi, who recently took a dig at Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and unfollowed her on social media has again targeted the latter.

Payal recently attended the screening of Kangana’s film ‘Dhaakad’ and later she said that the actor was rude to her.

Payal said that she went for the premiere as the film is produced by Sohail Maklai, who is a friend of her fiance, Sangram Singh.

She added that despite all her efforts to talk to the ‘Dhaakad’ actress, she was quite rude towards her.

She took to her Instagram handle and while praising Kangana’s sister Rangoli Chandel, she wrote: “Rangoli you are such a good human being. But your sister was not happy to see me. She was sulking.”

While talking to the media, she mentioned: “Kangana was giving wrong interviews to justify her winner of ‘Lock Upp’. I have to be honest with my conscience. There are people behind the camera who invest their hard-earned money in a film.

“I went for them as Sohail Maklai Ji is a friend of Sangram. In my post when I said her film should flop as she was the one using me for her reality show by calling me badass and then on finale day saying that I used to bully the winner. Because that was the talk before she asked the winner to do a standup act in the finale.

“I made an effort but she was not happy to see me and was rude.”

Calling the film’s box office collections ‘sad’, Payal indirectly mocked Munawar Faruqui and his fan following.

She also commented on how neither the winner of ‘Lock Upp’ nor his fans promoted the movie.

She wrote: “The one who got 18 lakh votes did not promote the film and even his BOTS did not watch the film.”

Hardik Pandya’s captaincy is simple; he doesn’t impose his will on anyone: Sai Kishore

0

Kolkata, May 23 Gujarat Titans’ left-arm spinner Sai Kishore has defined Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in just one word: Simple. The 25-year-old, who was bought by the Titans for Rs three crore after a fierce bidding war from several franchises in the IPL 2022 mega auction, has said that Pandya carries himself with a lot of confidence, which rubs off on fellow cricketers, and is the reason for the newcomer’s superb performance this season.

Gujarat Titans are top of the table with 20 points and will take on Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens here in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday. The team won 10 of the 14 league games, an incredible feat for a side that was not given much of a chance after the mega auction.

Kishore said, Pandya had a “very strong personality” and never imposes his will on the players.

“Hardik to me has been pretty simple. In the last game, he came to me and said, ‘Left-hander is batting, do you want me to tell you anything, or you know?’ I said, ‘I know, I’ll take care. I find Hardik as a very strong personality. He carries himself with a lot of confidence and has confidence in his players as well. Not trying to impose himself on all the players. Give them their space, their freedom, and ‘you express yourselves. If something goes wrong, I’ll be there. That’s how I’ve seen Hardik,” Kishore said on gujarattitansipl.com.

The 25-year-old Kishore, who has impressed with the limited exposure he has got this season, added that head coach Ashish Nehra and Pandya forge a strong bond because of which everyone in the team feels “secure”.

“It’s been amazing being here, with Ashu pa and Hardik. Ashu pa has made sure that everybody feels so secure in this team. Even when I was playing the 12th game of the season, I still felt like I need to contribute something to the team. Didn’t feel like I’d been left out or something like that. We’ve all felt so secure and a lot of credit needs to be given to both of them for making the environment like that.

Kishore added that if a captain imposes his will on players, the natural instinct goes for a toss, but in the Gujarat Titans’ setup, it’s always fun to play as the skipper is always backing his teammates.

“I’ve always loved the kinds of captains who give the responsibility to the player, rather than just imposing always. Then your instincts just get cut off. Credit to captains like that, always funs to play like that.”

He also said that contrary to reports that the Titans had a meticulous bowling plan before every game, there was no such elaborate meeting as everyone knew his role well.

“Honestly, there has not been ‘planning’ planning as such. We just sat together and discuss for half an hour, and 40 minutes, what is the devised plan. The good thing about the team is, that we have proper bowlers. We don’t have half-bowlers, half-batters. Whoever has played, they knew their roles, proper. It’s like five professionals handling their work, so the results have come. You don’t need to sit down and coach them in general. It’s five professional players showing up and doing their skillsets to the best they can.

“Definitely, Ashu pa (Ashish Nehra) being a fast bowler himself, he’s someone who reads the game very well. He has kept it pretty simple, like ‘this guy is a compulsive puller’, ‘this guy is the good square of the wicket’, ‘this guy is good when it’s pitched up, let’s not give it up. It’s been simple, but clear plans to execute. With Ashu pa also being a bowler, it has helped us so much. It has made the job very easy,” added the spinner.

Hardik Pandya's captaincy is simple; he doesn't impose his will on anyone: Sai Kishore

AC Milan roar back to win Serie A title after 11 years

0

Rome, May 23 AC Milan finally added the 19th Serie A into their trophy cabinet on Monday, after beating Sassuolo 3-0 in the last round of the 2021-22 Serie A season, and rendering Inter Milan’s thrashing of Sampdoria irrelevant.

AC Milan had not won the Italian league since 2011, and the club’s last major title was the Supercoppa in 2016.

The two Milanese clubs had secured a one-two finish on the table before Sunday’s games, as AC Milan had a two-point advantage and a superior head-to-head record over their city rivals, meaning one point would be enough for the Rossoneri to end their championship drought.

Milan went into the Mapei Stadium with a relatively full squad, Xinhua reports. Mike Maignan got the nod in goal, with Davide Calabria, Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu and Theo Hernandez ahead of him in defence.

Franck Kessie and Sandro Tonali stood in the middle of the park, Olivier Giroud led the forward line flanked by Rafael Leao and Alexis Saelemaekers, with Rade Krunic roaming behind the hitman, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic started the game from the bench.

Boosted by a homelike atmosphere, AC Milan pressed high from the start, trying to use their aggression and tempo to control the game. Giroud’s header in the opening minutes was parried away, while Tomori’s rebound was cleared off the line.

The Diavolo’s efforts paid off in the 16th minute when Leao rode tackles to square for Giroud to send the pass past several defenders and into the net.

The away side doubled the lead 15 minutes later in almost the same style when Leao won back possession and pulled back for Giroud to turn in from close range.

AC Milan ran riot to seal the win before the interval when Leao provided another assist for Kessie to drill home with sheer power.

Ibrahimovic came off the bench in the 73rd minute and scored immediately, but his goal was chalked off for offside.

After the whistle, the stadium burst into cheers and the fans poured into the pitch to celebrate with the players.

Despite finishing second, Inter Milan at least claimed a comfortable home win. Sampdoria held the Nerazzurri to a goalless first half, but after the break, they fell to pieces within 10 minutes, as Inter staged a show to complete the season with a 3-0 victory thanks to Ivan Perisic’s opener and Joaquin Correa’s brace.

Elsewhere, Salernitana survived a relegation scare as they remained in the top flight despite a 4-0 defeat to Udinese, while Cagliari became the last relegated team after playing out a 0-0 draw with already-doomed Venezia in a must-win game.

In an earlier fixture, third-place Napoli crushed Spezia 3-0.
