Sabalenka defeats Andreescu, Badosa outlasts Rybakina in Stuttgart

0

No.3 seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated Bianca Andreescu in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, triumphing 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in 1 hour and 52 minutes here on Thursday.

Earlier on Centre Court, No.2 seed Paula Badosa had also survived a three-setter, holding off Elena Rybakina 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4) in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Belarusian Sabalenka, runner-up in Stuttgart last year to Ashleigh Barty, booked her place in her second quarterfinal of 2022 following Doha in February. The 23-year-old is continuing to find her groove after stuttering starts to the year, and improved her overall record to 8-8.

This week has marked Andreescu’s return from a six-month hiatus to address her mental health. The Canadian’s tour-level clay experience has been limited so far. Stuttgart was just her fourth WTA main draw on the surface and she owns only one Top 100 win on clay, Vera Lapko in 2018 Roland Garros qualifying.

The only previous time Sabalenka and Andreescu had faced each other was in the very different environment of the Manchester ITF W100 in 2017 on grass before either player had cracked the Top 100. Sabalenka won that match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In another match, Spaniard Badosa’s intensity dipped in the second, while Rybakina improved her first serve percentage from 41 percent to 72 percent. Even so, Badosa managed to peg Rybakina’s 4-0 lead back to 4-4 before the Kazakh gathered herself to get over the line.

The quality and length of the baseline duels rose in the third set, and Badosa gained the upper hand in most of them as she went up 4-1. This time, it was Rybakina’s turn to chip away at the lead, and there was nothing separating the pair as they headed into the deciding tiebreak.

Despite Badosa serving two of her eight double faults in the tiebreak, Rybakina could not take advantage. The World No.19 committed five of her 38 unforced errors in response, including a backhand wide on Badosa’s third match point.

Badosa improved her head-to-head against Rybakina to 3-1 with the result, and will next face No.7 seed Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals.

IPL 2022: Lack of runs from Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan hurting Mumbai Indians

0

In Mumbai Indians’ seven-match losing streak in IPL 2022, the lack of runs from captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan has been one of the biggest reasons why Mumbai have been unable to break their winless run.

In this edition of IPL, Sharma has just 114 runs at an average of 16.29 and a strike rate of 126.66, including a two-ball duck against Chennai, making him the batter with most ducks in the history of IPL (14) when he chipped straight to mid-on off Mukesh Choudhary.

After IPL 2016, Sharma’s average has been in the 20s, implying that he hasn’t been at his menacing best at the time when he’s doing well internationally. Sharma has been getting starts but has been unable to convert that into a big score, something which a KL Rahul, Jos Buttler or David Warner, and Prithvi Shaw have been able to do.

On the other hand, Kishan had a strong start to IPL 2022, making 81 not out and 54. But since then, he has tapered off, making 14, 26, 3, 13, and a golden duck against Chennai when Choudhary’s yorker knocked him over. It seems that the weight of a hefty Rs 15.25 crores price tag is weighing down the left-handed batters’ attacking nature of play.

Overall, Kishan’s numbers in IPL 2022 are pale for an attacking opener, with 191 runs at an average of 31.83 and a lowly strike rate of 116.46. The lack of runs from bats of Sharma and Kishan means that the middle-order has got to do a lot of heavy lifting in getting a winning total, which hasn’t led them to the coveted ‘win the points table.

“It’s hard to put a finger on that (top-order issues). If you lose three or a couple of wickets upfront, it’s always going to be tough. You’re always playing that catching (up) game,” was Sharma’s assessment of Mumbai not getting the required runs from the top-order.

After the match against Chennai, head coach Mahela Jayawardene was unperturbed by the lack of runs from Sharma and Kishan. “To be honest, it’s been up and down, Ishan did well the first couple of games but has been on a slide. Ro (Rohit Sharma) is hitting the ball well and has gotten good starts with 15-20 runs but has not been able to convert. When that happens, when you get out early, you feel nothing is going your way.”

Jayawardene, an ace batter for Sri Lanka in his playing days, insisted that the duo have been timing the ball well in practice sessions. “I have been a batter and that’s part and parcel of the game. I will be concerned when they are not hitting the ball well or if they don’t have the confidence but both of them have been batting well out there in the middle and in the nets.”

Jayawardene feels that Mumbai has to back Sharma and Kishan to overcome their bad patch and get back to scoring ways by following their usual processes. “You need to back the ability and give them confidence. These are guys who have played a lot of IPL games, and understand what needs to be done. It will turn around. Get in every day, go through the processes and work hard.”

With a return fixture against Lucknow Super Giants coming at their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai will be hoping that it propels Sharma and Kishan to find their groove with them now virtually out of the competition.

At 332 mn users, Snapchat growing faster than Facebook, Twitter

0

Social media platform Snapchat is growing faster than Facebook and Twitter and in its latest quarterly report, the platform said it grew its daily active users (DAUs) by 18 percent to 332 million (year-on-year).

While Facebook (now Meta) had reported its first loss in the number of DAUs last quarter, Twitter’s monetizable DAUs grew only by 2 percent in the US and 15 percent globally.

Snap (parent company of Snapchat) grew its revenue 38 percent year-over-year to reach $1.06 billion for the quarter that ended March 31, 2022.

“Our first-quarter results reflect the underlying momentum in our business through a challenging operating environment,” said Evan Spiegel, CEO.

“We remain focused on providing value for our growing community, delivering ROI for our advertising partners, and investing against our enormous opportunity in augmented reality,” he said in a statement late on Thursday.

The company said it was set to gain 44 per cent growth since Q1 2021. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has hit its advertising revenues.

“We believe the impact of the war in Ukraine on input costs, marketing budgets and overall economic competence has been significant, and that it is difficult to predict its impact on a forward-looking basis,” Snap CFO Derek Andersen said during the earning’s call.

The company said that over 250 million Snapchatters engaged with Augmented Reality (AR) every day on average.

“Total daily time spent by Snapchatters aged 25 and older engaging with shows and publisher content increased by more than 25 percent year-over-year,” it added.

“We observed a 350 percent increase in the number of Spotlight submissions using creative tools or Lenses compared with Q1 2021,” the company informed.

IPL 2022: Knew if Dhoni stayed till last ball, he would win it for CSK, says Ravindra Jadeja

0

Thursday’s ‘El Clasico’ of IPL 2022 totally lived up to its billing at DY Patil Stadium with MS Dhoni offering a throwback to his vintage finishing avatar, hitting a six down the ground, pulling through short fine leg for four more, a brace whipped through mid-wicket and a match-winning four pulled through fine leg off Jaydev Unadkat on the final ball to give Chennai a close three-wicket win over Mumbai Indians.

The former India and Chennai captain finished unconquered at 28 off 13 balls with three fours and one six at a whopping strike rate of 215.38, adding another chapter to his illustrious book of finishing matches successfully. Dhoni gently raised his bat after finishing off the job for Chennai as they took just their second win of IPL 2022 in a thrilling fashion after being behind for the majority part of the chase.

“I have seen many matches of Mahi bhai ( MS Dhoni) where he has won it for India as well as IPL. It feels very good that Dhoni is still hungry and the touch is still existing. On seeing that, there is a sense of calmness in the dressing room that when he stays in the middle till the last over, then he will definitely win the match for us,” said Chennai skipper Ravindra Jadeja in a post-match virtual press conference.

It was not just Chennai having feelings of nervousness in the dugout. Till the time Dhoni’s vintage magic hit them, Mumbai had been doing well with the ball, striking at regular intervals to keep themselves in the hunt for their first win in IPL 2022. But Dhoni, called by Jadeja as ‘world’s greatest finisher’ had other ideas in the match-deciding final over, leaving Rohit Sharma and Co on the losing side for the seventh straight time.

“We were under a lot of pressure and the way the match was going, I felt that there was pressure on both sides of the dugout because the world’s best finisher was batting. We knew that somehow if he could stay until the last ball, then definitely he would win it for us because we had the belief that he would not miss those last few balls and luckily it happened like that. We were tense but we had faith because he has won so many matches for India and in the IPL,” stated Jadeja.

Apart from Dhoni, Chennai had another main protagonist in left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary, who didn’t have the best of times before the ‘El Clasico’. But Choudhary rocked Mumbai early on, taking out Sharma and Ishan Kishan for two-ball and golden ducks respectively in the opening over before claiming Dewald Brevis in his second over to leave the five-time champions in trouble.

Choudhary eventually took the ‘Player of the Match’ award, speaking volumes of Chennai’s faith in backing players coming good despite not being in good form.

“Mukesh has been around since the last season as a net bowler and we have been keeping an eye on his since then. He bowls well and with a swing too, so his ability to swing the new ball is very good, that’s why we have backed him,” Jadeja said.

It was a night where Choudhary and then Dhoni lit up DY Patil Stadium with a match to remember for a long time. “In the last two three matches, his bowling has not been that good. But we still back him because we knew at some point, he will take wickets for us and today he did that, tried to swing and got us wickets,” concluded Jadeja.

India reports 2,451 new Covid-19 cases, 54 deaths

In the last 24 hours, India reported 2,451 new Covid-19 cases, a marginal increase against the 2,380 infections registered the previous day, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.

Also in the same period, an additional 54 Covid fatalities increased the nationwide death toll to 522,116.

The number of India’s active caseloads has increased to 14,241, accounting for 0.03 percent of the country’s total positive cases.

The recovery of 1,589 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,25,16,068. Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.75 percent.

Also in the same period, a total of 4,48,939 tests were conducted across the country, increasing the overall to 83.38 crores.

While the weekly positivity rate stood at 0.47 percent, the daily positivity rate reported a considerable spike to 0.55 percent.

As of Friday morning, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage exceeded 187.26 crores, achieved via 2,29,29,662 sessions.

Barcelona claim narrow win in La Liga

0

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s ninth goal of the season gave FC Barcelona a 1-0 win against Real Sociedad to keep Barca second in La Liga here on Thursday.

The striker headed Ferran Torres’ cross into the back of the Real Sociedad net in the 11th minute of the game in what was Barca’s only effort on target during the match.

Barca had the better of the first half, but were on the back foot more in the second half, especially after Ronald Araujo had to be replaced by Eric Garcia after a knock on his knee.

Marc Andre Ter Stegen kept the home side at bay with two excellent saves from Adnan Januzaj as Real Sociedad ended the game with 56 percent of possession.
Sevilla remains third after a 3-2 win away to Levante, whose survival hopes suffered a big blow after Jesus Corona scored two first-half goals and Jules Kunde added a third in the 81st minute, reports Xinhua.

Jose Luis Morales’s 22nd minute momentarily leveled the scores, but he missed another with the score at 2-1 and Roberto Soldado’s second for Levante came with just three minutes left to play.

Sergi Guardiola’s 42nd-minute goal ended Rayo Vallecano’s 13 match run without a win and gave the Madrid based side a completely deserved 1-0 win away to a disappointing Espanyol.

Cadiz’s second half fightback fell just short as they lost 3-2 at home to Athletic Club Bilbao.

The visitors raced into a 3-0 first-half lead thanks to goals from Raul Garcia, Iker Muniain, who netted after his initial penalty had been blocked, and Mikel Vesga, who fired home from outside of the area.

Cadiz fought back strongly after the break and after Lucas Perez pulled a goal back in the 57th minute, they put Athletic under constant pressure with a string of crosses. Athletic were reduced to 10 when Vesga was sent off for a second yellow card, but although Ruben Soriano netted a second goal in the 86th minute, Athletic held on for three points.

Apple comes forward to protect mangroves, local livelihoods in India

0
In a bid to protect mangroves and local livelihoods in India, Apple on Friday announced a new initiative in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.

The tech giant awarded a grant to the Applied Environmental Research Foundation (AERF) to work with the local community to protect a 2,400-hectare mangrove forest in the region, which provides an important buffer against the most dangerous impacts of climate change.

Through the partnership, AERF will enter into conservation agreements with local community members, offering support in exchange for conserving and protecting the mangroves on their land, said the company.

“Our new partnership in India continues this momentum, helping a community benefit economically from the restoration of the mangrove forests that protect against the worst impacts of climate change,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.

The goal of the partnership is to help transition the local economy to one that relies on keeping mangroves intact and healthy.

AERF will also engage Conservation International to verify the climate benefits of the mangroves, accounting for the carbon sequestered in both the trees and soil.

In addition to protecting coastal communities from climate impacts like the unpredictable monsoons and rising tides that threaten the Raigad district, mangroves act as carbon sinks that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their soil, plants, and another sediment.

“Though mangrove conservation issues are diverse and different in each place, here in our project area, opportunities are also many,” said Dr. Archana Godbole, director of AERF.

“Training our young enthusiastic team as well as local communities for blue carbon will surely help us travel a long way to achieve mangrove conservation in this vibrant coastal area along the Arabian Sea,” Godbole added.

Amazon acquires Indian social commerce startup GlowRoad

0

E-commerce giant Amazon on Friday said that it has acquired homegrown women-focused social commerce startup GlowRoad for an undisclosed sum.

In a statement, the company said the acquisition will help it meet the commitment to digitize 10 million local Indian businesses by 2025.

“Amazon continues to explore new ways to digitize India and delight customers, micro-entrepreneurs, and sellers, and bringing GlowRoad onboard is a key step in this direction,” a company spokesperson told in interview.

The acquisition comes at a time when the social commerce industry in India is booming, with players like Flipkart’s social commerce platform arm Shopsy and Meesho.

Amazon said that with GlowRoad, it will help accelerate entrepreneurship among millions of creators, homemakers, students, and small sellers from across the country.

“This acquisition will complement GlowRoad’s already loved service with Amazon’s technology, infrastructure, and digital payments capabilities, bringing more efficiency and cost-saving for everyone,” said the company spokesperson.

GlowRoad recently raised nearly $32 million and has investors like Accel, Vertex Ventures, and CHD Investments, among others.

The platform has over six million resellers and is present in more than 2,000 cities.

A recent Accenture report said that as the global social commerce market is set to reach $1.2 trillion by 2025, India will be one of the fastest-growing markets in the space.

The report said that India’s social commerce market is expected to grow at a 59 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to reach $17 billion in gross merchandise value by 2025.

IPL 2022 Turning Point: Dhoni turns the clock back and pulls off vintage finish for CSK

0

Former captain MS Dhoni held his nerves, turned back the clock, and pulled off a vintage finish for defending champions Chennai Super Kings against their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in a thrilling IPL 2022 match at the DY Patil Stadium.

The 40-year-old Dhoni may have left the captaincy for India and as well as for CSK but he certainly hasn’t forgotten to do what he does best i.e “finishing the game” for his team.

Whether it was dragging the game to its last breath, knowing the areas to target, keeping calm, or finishing off the game in his style with a last-ball boundary, all the Dhoni touches were pretty much visible in his innings during the run chase on Thursday.

Chasing a modest target of 156 for victory, CSK was in deep trouble at 16-2 after losing the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Mitchell Santner (11) early in the innings. But, Robin Uthappa (30) and Ambati Rayudu (40) stitched a partnership of 50 runs for the third wicket and kept CSK in the game. However, once they got out, Chennai was back in trouble as the next two batters — Shivam Dube (13) and Ravindra Jadeja (3) didn’t do much.

It was Dwaine Pretorius (22 off 14) and Dhoni (28 not out off 13) who hit important runs and kept CSK in the chase till the last over. CSK needed 17 runs in the last over and Pretorius was trapped leg-before by Jaydev Unadkat off the first ball. DJ Bravo came to bat next and took a single in the second ball of the over, with 16 still to get.

Unadkat erred in length while trying to go full and wide and ended up offering a ball in the slot that Dhoni hit for a straight six in the third ball. The left-arm pacer took the pace off on the next and went short but Dhoni saw that coming, camped back, and pulled it to the square-leg fence, taking the chase down to 6 off 2 balls.

The veteran batter took 2 runs in the fifth ball, bringing the equation to 4 of 1, which Dhoni polished off with a whip of the wrists on a low full toss that beat the short fine leg fielder to the fence and sealed a memorable three-wicket victory for CSK.

Speaking after the game, Chennai Super Kings skipper Ravindra Jadeja said his team was confident of its chances in the close encounter with Mumbai Indians because the “great finisher of the game was there” to seal the victory for them.

“Actually we were very tense, the way the game was going, but at some stage, we knew that the great finisher of the game was there and if he played to the last ball, he can definitely finish the match. He showed the world that he’s still here and he can finish the game,” Jadeja said during the post-match ceremony.

It was Chennai’s second win of the IPL 2022 season and they are at the ninth spot in the table with four points while Mumbai suffered their seven consecutive loss in the tournament and is yet to win a game.

Social media ‘designed’ to weaken democracies: Obama

0

Former US President Barack Obama has broken his silence after a long time, saying that social media platforms are well-designed to destroy democracies.

Speaking at a Stanford University event late on Thursday, Obama called the present “another tumultuous, dangerous moment in history”.

“Disinformation is a threat to our democracy, and will continue to be unless we work together to address it,” he said.

Obama, who served as the 44th US President from 2009 to 2017, raised concerns about Russia’s 2016 election interference and the invasion of Ukraine.

“People like Putin, and Steve Bannon (Donald Trump’s senior advisor) for that matter, understand it’s not necessary for people to believe (misinformation) in order to weaken democratic institutions,” Obama emphasised.

“You just have to flood a country’s public square with enough raw sewage. You just have to raise enough questions, spread enough dirt, plan enough conspiracy theorizing, that citizens no longer know what to believe,” he added.

Obama said that while we’re reaping what social media companies have sown, it may not be too late to make different choices, reports TechCrunch.

“Not all problems we are seeing now are an inevitable byproduct of this new technology. They’re also the result of very specific choices made by the companies that have come to dominate the internet, generally, and social media platforms in particular,” he noted.

In the competition between truth and falsehood, cooperation and conflict, “the very design of these platforms seems to be tilting us in the wrong direction. And we’re seeing the results,” Obama continued in his hour-long speech.

Google rolls out ‘reject all’ button for tracking cookies in Europe, UK

0

After facing fines from European consumer and market regulators, Google has introduced an equal “Reject all” and “Accept all” buttons for tracking cookies on its platforms.

Anyone visiting Search and YouTube in Europe, while signed out or in Incognito Mode, will see a new cookie consent choice.

“This update, which began rolling out earlier this month on YouTube, will provide you with equal ‘Reject all’ and ‘Accept all’ buttons on the first screen in your preferred language,” Summit Adhya, Product Manager, Privacy, Safety & Security, said in a statement late on Thursday.

The users can also still choose to customise their choice in more detail with “More options”.

The new cookie button has been launched in France and will be rolled out across Europe, the UK, and Switzerland.

“Before long, users in the region will have a new cookie choice — one that can be accepted or rejected with a single click,” said Adhya.

Earlier this year, France’s data protection agency CNIL fined Google $170 million for confusing cookie tracking policies.

The new privacy change, said Google, would impact not only Search and YouTube, but also the sites and content creators who use them to help grow their businesses and make a living.

“We believe this update responds to updated regulatory guidance and is aligned with our broader goal of helping build a more sustainable future for the web,” said the company.

CLOSE-IN: Namby-Pamby cricketers of today need to change

0

One does not want to compare the cricketers of today to the ones who played earlier. Cricket has evolved and progressed on all fronts and it does get impossible to analyze and compare the performances of players even going back a decade ago.

The protection of ones’ head, legs, arms, fingers, face, thighs as well as chest guards has made the modern cricketer wear an armory, similar to the warriors of yore. The shoes and clothing are made for utmost comfort. The eyewear to enhance sighting the ball while fielding has become standard equipment for cricketers at all levels of play.

However, the most meaningful progress has been in the quality of the bat. The piece of wood may not have changed in its length and breadth, but the thickness and the well pressed and the compressed bat has made batters hit the ball into the stands, at will. It reminds one of the famous “mace” that one sees in the hand of the mighty Hanuman. The bat has whirled around in every direction as the batters are playing shots never imagined before. Progress is inevitable and is very important in the development of the human race.

Cricket too has grown by leaps and bounds; however, one questions whether the present cricketers are mentally tougher and more resilient than the ones before.

One feels they are at present, as one would describe them in the days gone by, as “Namby-Pamby”. One has never seen so many cricketers getting this injured both mentally and physically. Yes, they do look far slimmer, leaner, more agile, stronger and fitter, but only a few of the present cricketers barely complete the year without having had a major injury or a mental issue.

This takes one back to two recent incidents relating to two former Indian cricket captains. One being the courageous Nari Contractor and the other being the darling of today’s cricketing world, Virat Kohli. Both Nari and Virat have done some extraordinary deeds for Indian cricket and one holds them both in high esteem.

Nari Contractor, at the age of 88 was forced to remove the steel plate in his head due to complications. This was inserted to protect his brain after he was hit by a short ball from the West Indian fast bowler, Charlie Griffith.

Nari is a man of immense character. Where he stood out shoulders above most cricketers was that he never held any grudge or hatred towards the bowler and always blamed himself for the mishap. His love for the game was so intense that on recovering from one of the most traumatic injuries and with a steel plate in his head, he was back on the field playing first-class cricket for Gujarat.

He also showed a similar sign of bravery when India played at Lords in 1959. He broke a rib when he got hit on the chest, but remained on the wicket to compile 81 runs. He kept the Indian innings afloat when they were in a dire state with wickets crumbling at the other end.

The reason that Nari Contractor and others had such an attitude was that they were mentally tough. They were taught that encountering and enduring the ups and downs of the game is what the challenge is all about.

On the other hand, one is seeing the mental deterioration of one of the modern greats of world cricket, Virat Kohli. He is going through a phase that every cricketer encounters in their journey. The game of cricket is the greatest leveler and even the best go through a period where the hand of god leaves them.

Virat, unfortunately, is going through a rough patch psychologically rather than on account of his skills and capabilities. Many have suggested that he takes time off from the game to recoup and recover. The pressure of the multi-media and digital world is too great for him to overcome, is what they say. One then tries to reminisce on what the likes of Nari Contractor or a Sunil Gavaskar would have done. Running away from the field of battle or the game of cricket would be the last thing on their mind.

They would have continued to play to prove themselves without bothering about the brickbats that they would have received. This is what made them great cricketers, as accolades are only won on the field and can only be achieved by playing more cricket. Virat Kohli has already etched his name in cricket history and the only way forward for him is to respect the game that he loves and play it in an idealistic manner that he enjoyed.

The question of injuries and mental breakdowns that seem to be a common factor in the lives of the present cricketers makes one wonder as to why there were fewer, earlier. An abundance of cricket, the bio-bubble, and travel seem to be the main reasons stated for mental and physical problematic issues. However, one has to remember that these issues occur even when the players live and travel in 5 -star comfort and occur at a time when families are allowed to travel along with them.

Maybe, the comfort of life and money is making them soft. Earlier, one traveled by bus and train and was lucky to get the comfort of a 3-star hotel. Families were not allowed and players had to sign a contract to abide by it. The only people one had then to talk to and to calm one’s anxiety or depression were fellow colleagues. This is what made cricketers tough and resilient.

The present cricketer needs to face up to the truth that he is not a movie superstar hoping to get a super hit at the box office but a cricketer who is playing against the uncertainties of the game. Cricket is their passion and their success in life. The initial 6 months of the pandemic were a good example of how lonely life can be without their sport.

They need to break out of their namby-pamby attitude and turn into being tough nuts to crack. They should be grateful that they are still being able to ply their trade, unlike many unfortunate ones, who are whiling away their time at home.

Akshay Kumar issues apology for doing tobacco advert

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, who was recently seen in an advertisement for a tobacco brand along with Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan, has issued an apology for featuring in the commercial after it received flak from the netizens.

The actor took to his social media to tender an apology through a long note. He wrote, “I am sorry. I would like to apologize to you, all my fans, and well-wishers. Your reaction over the past few days has deeply affected me.”

Although the advertisement was for an ‘elaichi’ (cardamom) product, given the laws surrounding surrogacy marketing in India, it triggered a slew of memes and reels as people on the Internet dug up an old video of the ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ star where he can be seen promising that he would never work in a tobacco product advertisement.

In fact, Goa BJP’s medical cell convenor Shekhar Salkar also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strip Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Shah Rukh Khan of their Padma Awards for featuring in such ads. However, it is to be noted that the Government of India earned Rs 4,962 crore in taxes for the financial year 2020-2021 from tobacco companies.

Continuing his note further, Akshay wrote that he still stands by what he said in that particular video that surfaced on the Internet, “While I have not and will not endorse tobacco, I respect the outpouring of your feelings in light of my association with Vimal Elaichi. With all humility, I step back. I have decided to contribute the entire endorsement fee towards a worthy cause.”

“The brand might continue airing the ads till the legal duration of the contract that is binding upon me, but I promise to be extremely mindful in making my future choices. In return I shall forever continue to ask for your love and wishes(sic)”, he concluded.

Covid-19: Telangana urges people to be on alert

0

With Covid-19 cases rising in some states, health authorities in Telangana on Thursday issued an alert and advised people to adopt Covid appropriate behavior.

Director of Public Health G. Srinivasa Rao said though the positivity rate in Telangana has not gone up, people should follow precautionary measures like wearing masks in crowded places.

He told reporters that people need to be cautious especially for the next three months as thousands of marriages take place in the April-June period. During the summer, many people travel distances, and families and friends come together. “Hence, there is a need to adopt Covid appropriate behavior like wearing of masks in crowded places,” he said.

He said while there was no need for panic, people should be alert in view of the rise in cases in neighboring states.

Rao said for Telangana to avoid a situation being seen in some states like Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, people should take precautions and all eligible individuals should take vaccines when due.

“We don’t know whether a fourth wave will come or not but we should be in a position to come out of a possible fourth wave and for this vaccination is a must,” he said.

The official claimed that the state could emerge from the third wave with minimum loss due to cent percent vaccination. He said 80 percent of vaccinated people have developed antibodies.

He said the sero survey conducted in the state in January-February revealed that the seropositivity rate in the state is 92.9 percent. He cited this as a strong indication that the state may not see the fourth wave but cautioned people against being complacent.

He said while the r-value or the virus reproduction rate is over one percent in states like Delhi and Haryana, it is just 0.5 percent in Telangana.

Claiming that the Covid situation in the state is completely under control for the last six weeks, Rao said barring Hyderabad no other district is reporting more than 10 cases every day.

He said the state has achieved good success in vaccination with 106 percent of the population taking the first dose and 100 percent both the doses.

He said all people above 60 years should take a booster dose, nine months after taking the second dose. People in the 18-59 age group should take booster doses in private hospitals. He also urged people to ensure vaccination of all children in the 12-17 age group.

SC orders status quo on Bombay HC order asking Uber to comply with MVA guidelines

0

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed status quo in connection with the Bombay High Court order directing Uber India to comply with Motor Vehicle Aggregator (MVA) Guidelines 2020.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singvhi, appearing for Uber, submitted before a bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and B.R. Gavai that his client has serious objection to the validity of the guidelines. He added that many of the conditions in the guidelines are not workable and the issue has been raised before the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The top court issued notice to the Centre, the Road Transport Ministry, and others on an appeal filed by Uber India Services Private Ltd challenging the high court order. “Notice and status quo,” said the bench, asking Uber’s counsel to serve notice on the other side. The bench said it will list the matter after two to three weeks.

Singhvi contended that “this amounts to an impermissible legislative exercise by the high court…to notify authorities under the guidelines”.

The high court had passed the directions on a PIL by advocate Savina Crasto citing the lack of an effective grievance redressal mechanism for customers using the Uber India app.

The high court observed that app-based taxi firms such as Ola and Uber operating in Maharashtra without valid licenses and directed all such aggregators to apply for valid licenses by March 16, if they wish to continue operations. However, it refrained from prohibiting such cabs from plying in the meanwhile, saying it would adversely affect commuters.

Taxi aggregator Uber India moved the top court against the March 7, 2022 order of the high court directing cab aggregators to comply with MVA Guidelines 2020.

Big fight after 9 years: All eyes on Friday’s Guwahati civic polls

0

All eyes are focused on Friday’s elections to the 60-seat Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), where polling will be held after a gap of nine years.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded 40 candidates, giving added importance to the GMC elections while the ruling BJP is making all-out efforts to win the polls. After its success in the recent Punjab Assembly elections and buoyed by its first taste of success in two municipal wards in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts in last month’s civic polls, the AAP is seeking to expand its base in Assam and in the northeastern region.

The AAP’s Delhi MLA Atishi, who undertook a hectic campaign for the party, and its Assam state coordinator Baren Chowdhury said that the party would form the board by winning a majority of the seats.

Chowdhury said that Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal has been promoting morality in politics and such principles would facilitate the party to expand its base in Assam and other northeastern states. The AAP is trying to present itself as the alternative to the two national parties — the BJP and the Congress — in the GMC elections.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the BJP’s election campaign and addressed multiple rallies across the city while Assam Pradesh Congress President Bhupen Borah led the state’s main opposition party on its campaign trail.

The political parties both national and local, have gone all out to woo the people promising a flood-free, crime-free and development-centric city with piped water to all households besides the availability of all other basic civic amenities.

Altogether 197 candidates are in the fray in 57 wards, while BJP candidates in three wards have already been elected unopposed. The BJP had given seven seats to its ally, Asom Gana Parishad. There are 197 candidates contesting in the 57 wards.

Altogether 7,96,829 voters including 3,99,911 females and 27 belonging to the third gender are eligible to exercise their franchise.

Electronic Voting Machines will be used in the politically important elections. The votes will be counted on April 24.

New Omicron sub-variant seen behind surge in Delhi’s Covid cases

0

A new Omicron sub-variant may be the reason behind the sudden surge of Covid cases in Delhi, which witnessed an over 60 percent rise in fresh Covid cases on Wednesday at 1,009 cases.

According to a source from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), Omicron sub-lineage BA.2.12 was detected in several samples sequenced from the national capital. The source said that some other sub-variants have also been found that could be the reason behind the surge in the city. He added further that the new Covid mutant also seems capable of causing respiratory problems and reinfection who have previously been infected by Covid.

India has seen a rise in Covid cases over the last few weeks with some parts seeing more cases. On Thursday, the country reported 2,380 fresh Covid infections in the last 24 hours, against 2,067 cases recorded on Wednesday. In the same period, the nation has also recorded 56 Covid deaths, taking the total number of deaths to 522,062, said the Union Health Ministry on Thursday morning.

Thunderstorm hits Hyderabad, flights diverted

0

Flights coming to Hyderabad from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Visakhapatnam were diverted to other cities as a thunderstorm hit the city and suburbs on Thursday evening.

Parts of Hyderabad and surrounding districts experienced light to moderate rains along with hailstorms and lightning.

While the sudden change in the weather provided citizens relief from the sweltering heat, the gusty winds also uprooted trees and disrupted the movement of vehicular traffic in a few places.

The bad weather also forced the airport authorities to divert the flight from four cities.

Flights, which were to land at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), were diverted to Bengaluru, Vijayawada, and Nagpur, an airport spokesperson said.

The Delhi-Hyderabad flight was diverted to Bengaluru while the Bengaluru-Hyderabad flight was diverted to Nagpur. The Mumbai-Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad flights were diverted to Vijayawada.

Kondapur, Quthbullapur, Jeedimetla, Dilsukhnagar, Chaitanyapuri, Abdullahpurmet, Kothapet, and other areas received moderate rainfall. Several areas including Kukatpally, Hydernagar, Nizampet, and Malakpet saw rains with hailstorms.

Rains also lashed parts of the old city including Barkash, Chandrayangutta, Falaknuma, and Bahadupura.

Hailstorms also led to traffic jams in a few places. Many areas in neighboring Sangareddy districts experienced gusty winds with lightning. Motorists had a tough time in areas like Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, BHEL, and Ameetpur.

Rains came as a welcome relief for people reeling under intense heatwave conditions. Adilabad was the hottest place in Telangana with the mercury rising to 43.3 degrees Celsius. Nizamabad recorded a maximum temperature of 41.9 while Hyderabad experienced a maximum temperature of 40.2, lower than Wednesday’s 41.4.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a trough from Rayalaseema to south Tamilnadu is now running from north interior Karnataka to the Comorin area at 0.9 km above mean sea level, which could trigger light rainfall and thunderstorms in some parts of the state and areas across Hyderabad.

The IMD has also issued a thunderstorm and lightning alert for places including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Adilabad, Nirmal, Medak, Vikarabad, Hyderabad, Mahabubnagar, Jogulamba, Narayanpet, and Kamareddy. The alert is for the next five days

IPL 2022: CSK win toss, opt to bowl against Mumbai Indians

0

Chennai Super Kings captain Ravindra Jadeja won the toss and opted to bowl first against Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2022 match at DY Patil Stadium, here on Thursday.

CSK, who have won just one game in the ongoing season, made two changes in their team as Dwaine Pretorius and Mitchell Santner came in place of Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan.

“We are going to bowl first. The wicket looks a bit damp and we want to take advantage. It might spin a bit initially and the dew might come in the second half. We have a couple of changes in place of Moeen and Jordan, Pretorius and Santner come in,” said Jadeja at the toss.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai, who are searching for their first win in the tournament, made three changes in their playing XI — bringing in Riley Meredith, Hrithik Shokeen, Daniel Sams.

“The surfaces have changed a bit from what we played in the first game. The teams have won batting first here in the last 3-to 4 games, so it is a blessing in disguise. We have made three changes. Riley Meredith is making his debut for Mumbai, Hrithik Shokeen is an off-spinner and making his debut, Daniel Sams comes back,” said Rohit.

“Whenever we make those changes we see if we can find the right balance. We don’t want to compromise on our batting and at the same time don’t want to compromise on our bowling, we try and keep that intact with five bowling options,” he added.
