Praggnanandhaa has potential to become world champion: Viswanathan Anand

0

Indian chess Grandmaster and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand has lavished praise on teenage Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who became an overnight sensation after defeating the World Champion Magnus Carlsen recently. He added that the teenage chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa has the potential to become the world champion.

Anand said that he is delighted to see players like Praggnanandhaa and other young chess players doing well at the international level.

At the age of 16, Praggnanandhaa became the youngest chess player ever to beat Carlsen. The teenage chess prodigy became the third Indian to beat Carlsen after Anand and P Harikrishna.

Anand. who became India’s first grandmaster in 1988 said Praggnanandhaa is a very talented player and can become a big name if he keeps up improving his game.

“It’s a big deal to beat a player like Magnus Carlsen. Praggnanandhaa has done it, so he has got talent. Many players like him have the potential to make India proud in the world,” Anand said.

The 52-year-old Anand, who is working with a chess academy, has taken five of the country’s most promising players including Praggnanandhaa under his wings.

“I am working with some young talents including Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin, Raunak Sadhwani, D Gukesh, and R Vaishali. All have the potential and under the right guidance they all can be in the top ten and even become World Champions,” said Anand, who is one of the few players to have surpassed an Elo rating of 2800, a feat he first achieved in 2006.

“Praggnanandhaa’s game needs to get better. His game is being worked on and he could be a great player in the times to come,” he said.

IPL 2022: Mumbai seeking better bowling returns against confident Rajasthan

0

Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will be seeking better bowling returns when they go up against a confident Rajasthan Royals in their second match of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium here on Saturday.

Both teams head into their second match of the championship with contrasting results in their first match. While Mumbai was stunned by Delhi Capitals in a late come-from-behind performance by Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel, Rajasthan buried Sunrisers Hyderabad under a heap of runs and eventually won by 61 runs.

Mumbai will again be looking at Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan to give them a good start. Kishan was impressive in blazing his way to an unbeaten 81 against Delhi. Their middle-order batting has been given a huge boost by the return of flamboyant batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is available for selection after missing the opener against Delhi due to a hairline fracture in the thumb.

What Mumbai will be mainly concerned about is their bowling. After having reduced Delhi to 104/6, Mumbai was unable to take out either Yadav or Patel as they were unable to defend 177. Rajasthan’s bowling unit comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Basil Thampi, Daniel Sams, Murugan Ashwin, and Tymal Mills has its task cut out in dismissing the batters early. Bumrah and Sams went wicketless against Delhi and will be itching to bounce back against Rajasthan.

Bowling is an area where Mumbai’s director of cricket Zaheer Khan had touched upon. “We usually have been slow starters but I am happy with the way plans are working and how everyone has been approaching this year. You will definitely see that change in coming games. The first game was good learning for us. CCI is not an easy wicket for bowlers, 200+ was chased down even yesterday. So, it was not an easy day for the bowlers. But we are right on the money in terms of planning and prep.”

On the other hand, Rajasthan became the first team in IPL 2022 to win by batting first. This was possible due to the top five of Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Sanju Samson, Devdutt Padikkal, and Shimron Hetmyer clicking together. Samson impressed the most with his 55 as Rajasthan feasted on the freebies served by Hyderabad’s bowlers.

Their bowlers, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Yuzvendra Chahal were right on target against Hyderabad.

Rajasthan’s bowling attack has the riches which can make every team feel envious, something which head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara feels lucky about.

“It’s always nice to have the ability of such high quality in your attack. To have them available throughout is another great plus. The bowling and batting equally make a huge impact in T20 cricket, especially on flat wickets. So, it’s a real confidence booster to have that bowling strength always present.”

But Rajasthan will be thinking of bringing in James Neesham or Daryl Mitchell to replace Nathan Coulter-Nile, who may not be fit for the clash if not recovered from an injury sustained against Hyderabad in time. With Rajasthan having achieved success against Mumbai in past matches, one can expect the clash between the two heavyweights to be an exciting affair with fireworks aplenty.

Squads:

Mumbai Indians:

Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (wk), Anmolpreet Singh, Rahul Buddhi, Ramandeep Singh, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Tilak Verma, Tim David, Arjun Tendulkar, Basil Thampi, Hrithik Shokeen, Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat, Jofra Archer, Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin, Riley Meredith, Tymal Mills, Arshad Khan, Daniel Sams, Dewald Brevis, Fabian Allen, Sanjay Yadav, and Aryan Juyal.

Rajasthan Royals:

Sanju Samson (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Jos Buttler (wk), Rassie Van der Dussen, Nathan Coulter Nile, Jimmy Neesham, Daryl Mitchell, Karun Nair, Obed McCoy, Navdeep Saini, Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Shimron Hetmyer, Devdutt Padikkal, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shubham Garwal, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldip Yadav, Kuldeep Sen, Tejas Baroka, Anunay Singh and KC Kariappa.

Sitharaman, Jaishankar defend India buying Russian oil

0

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday defended the purchase of cheap Russian oil even as sanctions have been imposed on Moscow following its military attack on Ukraine.

At an event in Mumbai, Sitharaman said, “We have started buying Russian oil and have bought at least 3 to 4 days of supply. I will put my energy security and my country’s interest first. If supply is available at a discount, why shouldn’t I buy it?”

In the meantime, Jaishankar said said that Europe has bought 15 per cent more oil and gas from Russia than it did the month before.

The minsiter made this statement in the presence of British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss.

“I think it’s natural for countries to go out into the market and look for what are the good deals for their people,” Jaishankar said.

“If we wait for two or three months and actually look at who are the big buyers of Russian gas and oil, I suspect the list won’t be very different from what it used to be,” he added.

Responding to Jaishankar, Truss said that Britain respects India’s decision to buy discounted oil from Russia.

“India is a sovereign nation and I am not going to tell India what to do,” she said.

The statements from Truss and Jaishankar came after US Deputy National Security Advisor Daleep Singh warned that the US would not like to see a rapid acceleration of India’s imports from Russia.

Former Australia wicketkeeper Peter Nevill retires from all forms of cricket

0

Former Australian wicketkeeper Peter Nevill on Friday announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket after playing for 13 years at the top level.

The 36-year-old, who represented Australia in 17 Tests and nine T20Is, played his last international cricket in 2016. Since then, he has had a record-breaking career with New South Wales.

He retires having captained the Blues in 43 Shield matches, more than any other player in history, and as one of just four men to have played more than 100 Shield matches for NSW. However, Nevill hasn’t been on the field since February this year with a shoulder injury ending his season prematurely for New South Wales.

The wicketkeeper holds the record for the most catches for his state at 310 and is second on the Blues’ all-time dismissal list behind Phil Emery. He played in two Shield titles and two Marsh Cup titles with New South Wales, leading them to their last Shield triumph in 2019/20 which was won in unusual circumstances.

“I always knew that I was close to the end of my career. It was a frustrating season for me, I think I’ve missed more games this season due to injury than the rest of my career combined. I’m very proud that I was able to play for Australia, and that I was able to play for such a long time for New South Wales,” said Nevill.

“I’d like to think that I was able to squeeze as much juice out of my orange as I could. For a bloke with minimal talent and no shots, I leave the game pretty content,” he added.

Nevill played 17 Tests for Australia during a transition period in 2015/16. He replaced Brad Haddin for the Lord’s Test on the 2015 Ashes tour. He played 17 consecutive matches and kept impressively throughout but averaged just 22.28 with the bat and made only three half-centuries, which belied his first-class batting record, given he finished with 5,927 runs at 36.81 and 10 first-class centuries.

The wicket-keeper lost his place to Matthew Wade in the selection purge that followed Australia’s disastrous loss to South Africa in Hobart.

“I’d say (I was) someone who got the most out of the ingredients they had. I’ve been fortunate to have played for as long as I have. It is hard to condense (my career) into something short and sweet,” the Australian said.

“However, there are the opportunities I’ve had, the experiences, the people I’ve met, being able to travel the world, the ups, and downs. Something that stands out is the very special people I’ve met, and there was no shortage of them at the Blues (NSW),” he added.

Nevill will spend time with his family but has expressed an interest in doing some coaching after a brief coaching/playing stint with Melbourne Stars during the recent BBL.

Be impermeable, independent as political executive will change, CJI to CBI

0

Political executive will change, but the CBI as an institution is permanent and it should remain impermeable and independent, Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana said on Friday, emphasizing that the need of the hour is for police to reclaim social legitimacy and public trust.

For that, it has broken the nexus with the political executive, he said while delivering the 19th D.P. Kohli Memorial Lecture of the CBI on “Democracy: Role and Responsibilities of Investigative Agencies”.

At the outset, Chief Justice Ramana said: “When the Director, CBI Subodh Kumar Jaiswal came to invite me for this lecture, I told him very frankly that I may have to express some critical opinions about the functioning of the police in India. Hope he has not invited trouble by inviting me.”

He said that misuse of police by political masters is not a new feature and the British deployed domination, surveillance, and coercion, which remain the enduring feature of the Indian police.

The Chief Justice said that given our experience with democracy so far, it is proven beyond doubt that democracy is best suited for a pluralistic society like ours. “Our rich diversity cannot be sustained through dictatorial governance. It is only through democracy that our rich culture, heritage, diversity, and pluralism can be sustained and strengthened,” he added.

He said, “when any attempt has been made to snatch our freedom, our alert citizenry did not hesitate to seize the power back from autocrats”.

“So, it is essential that all the institutions including the police and the investigative bodies uphold and strengthen the democratic values. They should not allow any authoritarian tendencies to creep in,” he added.

Chief Justice Ramana said that with the passage of time, like every other institution of repute, the CBI has also come under deep public scrutiny and its actions and inactions have raised questions regarding its credibility, in some cases.

“The need of the hour is to reclaim social legitimacy and public trust. The first step to gain the same is to break the nexus with the political executive,” he said.

Noting that a single incident these days gets investigated by multiple agencies, often leading to dilution of evidence, a contradiction in depositions, prolonged incarceration of innocents, he said: “There is an immediate requirement for the creation of an independent umbrella institution, so as to bring various agencies like the CBI, SFIO, ED, etc. under one roof. This body is required to be created under a statute, clearly defining its powers, functions, and jurisdictions. Such a law will also lead to much needed legislative oversight.”

He added that it is imperative for the organization to be headed by an independent and impartial authority, to be appointed by a committee akin to the one which appoints the Director of the CBI.

“It will also save the institution from being blamed as a tool of harassment. Once an incident is reported, the organization should decide as to which specialized wing should take up the investigation,” he said.

The Chief Justice said: “Ultimately, you must remember that your allegiance must be to the Constitution and the rule of law, and not to any person. The political executive will change with time. But you, as an institution, are permanent. Be impermeable and be independent. Pledge solidarity to your service. Your fraternity is your strength.”

He emphasized that harmonious relationships should exist between the state and central agencies, collaboration is the key, and after all, the goal of all these organizations is to secure justice.

He also suggested autonomous wings for prosecution and investigation, in order to ensure total independence.

Hockey Pro League: India will look for consistency, full points against England

0

Lack of consistency has been the bane of Indian hockey for years and Graham Reid’s team to has been plagued by this as is evident in their performance in the ongoing men’s FIH Pro League.

In eight matches they have played so far, India has won five and lost three, one of them in the shoot-out. Though Reid’s team is placed second behind Germany (17) with 16 points from eight games, their wins have come against lower-ranked teams.

They have beaten South Africa (10-2, 10-2) and registered mixed results in the doubleheader against France (5-0, 2-5) held in South Africa in February, while in home games, they shared the honors with Spain (5-4, 3-5) and against Argentina they registered 2-2 (1-3 SO) and 4-3 results in a thrilling two-legged tie.

As they go into the double-header against England at the Kalinga Stadium this weekend, consistency is one thing that Ried’s boys will hope to achieve. India will play England in the first match this Saturday followed by the second on Sunday.

Olympic bronze medallists India would love to win both their matches against England before they go into a two-month-long break in the schedule. They resume their campaign on June 11-12 with away matches against world No. 2 and reigning Olympic and world champion Belgium, followed by a double-header against the Netherlands a week later.

Though England had a great start against Spain, they failed to click against Argentina. England has played only four matches so far and though they are rebuilding their team following the retirement of many senior players, they still will be quite dangerous and capable of surprising any team.

Indian men’s team captain Amit Rohidas said they are not thinking of the opposition and emphasized sticking to their plans for the matches.

“They have a lot of young players in the team, and they have come with a lot of motivation. Each team plays to win matches, so it will certainly be a good challenge for us. Our focus will be to stick to our plans, just like we did against Argentina. We managed a draw in the first game and won the second game at the last minute. It was a really good performance from the team, so it will be really important to play according to the plans and strategies that we make against our opponents,” the Indian captain said during a pre-match virtual press conference on Friday.

India vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh said their campaign was going in the right direction.

“It’s been going really great from the team’s perspective. Mainly our focus has been to get stronger match by match. We are learning from our mistakes, we are getting to know a lot of new things, so just maintaining that we are making the most out of these Pro League Matches to prepare for the major tournaments. Even younger players are getting chances to play, and in each match, we try to give our best, so it’s really helping the team,” he stated.

The Indians have the most aggressive team in the competition, scoring 41 goals but they have shown defensive frailties too and have conceded 23 goals so far.

Besides a consistent performance against a side that is ranked world No. 4, England will also keep the weather, which is expected to be hot and humid this weekend, in mind.

England head coach Zak Jones hoped the weather will not be a factor in the two matches. “I hope the weather will not be a factor as it was a bit pleasant when we practiced on Thursday evening.”

He said the matches against Argentina have prepared his team for the double-header against India.

“I think there are a lot of similarities in the way Argentina and India play, so we feel that the games against Argentina have hopefully, prepared us relatively well for the sort of India play,” said Jones.

“We know India is a really good side and they are playing pretty well at the moment, so I think for us it will be to play our game, which is to look after the ball, try and wear them down, play some positive hockey. We’ve got quite a lot of inexperienced players as well, so they have learned a lot from Argentina games and hopefully can bring those learnings in these two games against India,” he concluded.

Having lost both their matches to Argentina, Jones will hope his boys will fare better against India.

Shah inaugurates birth anniversary of Lingayat pontiff in K’taka

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday inaugurated the 115th birth anniversary of Lingayat pontiff, late Shivakumara Swamiji at Siddaganga Mutt in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has adopted the Lingayat seer’s philosophy.

At Siddaganga Mutt, more than 10,000 poor children from all sections of the society get to stay, study and have food.

The Modi government has also implemented this service spirit in its governance, Shah added.

“During the Covid crisis, 80 crore people were given 5 kg food for two years. Through the National Education Policy, PM Modi has enabled the students to get technical education, engineering, and medicine in their own languages. The Modi government has provided a home to 3 crore people in seven years of its rule. All three principles of late pontiff Shivakumar Swamiji, which are education, shelter, and free food, have been implemented by PM Modi too,” the Union Home Minister said.

“I have come to Siddaganga Mutt for the third time in my lifetime. Whenever I come here, I have gone back with enlightenment. Former Prime Minister, late Atal Bihari Vajpayee stated that ‘Uttar mein Ganga Aur Dakshin mein Siddaganga’, referring to this Mutt,” he added.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa demanded the inclusion of the life history of Shivakumara Swamiji in the school syllabus for children.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he would consider naming the government mid-day scheme after Shivakumar Swamiji.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Bhagwanth Khutba said he was a student of the Mutt and now he is a devotee.

Congress leader G. Parameshwara was also present at the function.

NASA launches wet dress rehearsal for Artemis I moon rocket

0

After making a public debut on its way to the launch pad, NASA has started a two-day wet dress rehearsal for its Artemis 1 mega moon rocket, the US space agency officials said.

The dress rehearsal will demonstrate the team’s ability to load more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic, or super-cold, propellants into the rocket at the launch pad, practice every phase of the launch countdown, and drain propellants to demonstrate safely standing down on a launch attempt.

The test will be the culmination of months of assembly and testing for SLS and Orion, as well as preparations by launch control and engineering teams, and set the stage for the first Artemis launch.

The approximately two-day test, to be held between April 1 and 3, “will run the Artemis I launch team through operations to load propellant into the rocket’s tanks, conduct a full launch countdown, demonstrate the ability to recycle the countdown clock, and also drain the tanks to give them an opportunity to practice the timelines and procedures they will use for launch” NASA said in a statement.

During the rehearsal, mission controllers will countdown to T-1 minutes and 30 seconds and pause to demonstrate the ability to hold for up to 3 minutes, then resume until 33 seconds before, when the launch would occur, then pause the countdown.

Then they will recycle back to ten minutes before launch and conduct a second terminal countdown to approximately 9.3 seconds before launch, then end the countdown.

Sometimes called a “scrub,” launch controllers may decide not to proceed with launch if a technical or weather issue arises during or prior to the countdown.

At the end of the test, the team will drain the propellant to demonstrate the procedures that would be used during a launch scrub. After draining the tanks, the team will review the test data before setting an official target launch date.

Artemis 1 is currently scheduled to launch no earlier than late May 2022.

The uncrewed Artemis I mission is the first flight of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft together. Future missions will send people to work in lunar orbit and on the Moon’s surface.

With the Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon and establish long-term exploration in preparation for missions to Mars. SLS and Orion, along with the commercial human landing system and the Gateway that will orbit the Moon, are NASA’s backbone for deep space exploration.

Popular social network Snapchat has announced that users across iOS and Android can now share Youtube videos directly to the platform.

Snapchat said that over 2 billion logged-in users visit YouTube every month to tune into videos that help them find new music, learn different skills, catch up on news, and discover more about the world around them.

“…all Snapchatters across iOS and Android can seamlessly share their favorite YouTube videos with their friends straight through the Snapchat Camera — no more pesky copying and pasting required!” the company said in a blogpost.

“With this new integration, we are making it easier than ever for these viewers to send their favorite clips and videos right where they are already talking with their friends on Snapchat,” it added.

This is the first time that YouTube links can be shared visually to Snapchat Stories and one-on-one Snaps, while still accessing the Camera and full suite of Snapchat Creative Tools for self-expression.

“Our tappable YouTube stickers bring Snapchatters directly to the video within the YouTube app or in their preferred mobile browser,” the company said.

“At Snap, we believe in the power of visual communication, and with this partnership, we are giving our community infinite ways to express themselves, share what they are watching, and layer on their own creative takes,” it added.

Move to Hyderabad, KTR tells startup founder unhappy with B’luru infra

“Pack your bags and move to Hyderabad” was the advice of Telangana’s Information Technology and Industries Minister K.T. Rama Rao to a startup founder who highlighted the poor infrastructure in Bengaluru.

“Pack your bags & move to Hyderabad! We have better physical infrastructure & equally good social infrastructure. Our airport is 1 of the best & getting in & out of the city is a breeze More importantly our Govt’s focus is on 3 I Mantra; innovation, infrastructure & inclusive growth,” tweeted Rama Rao.

This was in response to a tweet by Khatabook founder Ravish Naresh, who flagged bad roads, power cuts, poor quality water supply, and other problems in the Karnataka capital.

“Startups in HSR/Koramangala (India’s Silicon Valley) are already generating billions of $ of taxes. Yet we have v bad roads, almost daily power cuts, poor quality water supply, unusable footpaths. Many rural areas now have better basic infra than India’s Silicon Valley,” tweeted Naresh.

“Also the nearest airport is 3hrs away in peak traffic,” added Naresh who tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP’s Karnataka unit, and MP Tejasvi Surya, seeking their help.

Many Twitter users urged Naresh to look at Hyderabad which has the best infrastructure, including an uninterrupted power supply to all sectors.

Some netizens also commented that the focus of Karnataka is on non-issues. “Sadly, the focus is on Hijab and removing Muslim vendors near temples. Karnataka, slowly but surely, is turning into Uttar Pradesh of South,” tweeted a user who goes by the name Anshul.
