UK scientists working on a test to match drugs to DNA

0

UK scientists are working on a genetic test that can predict how well drugs work in your body.

The tests could be available on the NHS next year, the BBC reported.

Some drugs are completely ineffective or become deadly because of subtle differences in how our bodies function. Previously, 5-7 percent of people had a bad reaction to the HIV drug abacavir and some even died.

Testing people’s DNA before prescribing the drug means the risk is now zero. The field of matching drugs to an individual’s DNA is known as pharmacogenomics.

About “99.5 percent of us have at least one change in our genome that, if we come across the wrong medicine, it will either not work or it will actually cause harm”, Prof Mark Caulfield, the President-elect of the British Pharmacological Society, was quoted as saying.

The report looked at the 100 most prescribed drugs in the UK. Scientists said they already have the technology to roll out genetic testing to guide the use of 40 of them.

The genetic analysis would cost about 100 pounds and could be done using either a sample of blood or saliva, the report said.

Initially, the vision is to perform the test when one of the 40 drugs is prescribed. In the long term, the ambition is to test well ahead of time – possibly at birth if genetic testing of newborns goes ahead, or as part of a routine check-up in your 50s.

“We need to move away from ‘one drug and one dose fits all’ to a more personalized approach, where patients are given the right drug at the right dose to improve the effectiveness and safety of medicines,” Prof Sir Munir Pirmohamed, from the University of Liverpool, was quoted as saying.

He said that as we age and are prescribed more and more drugs, there’s a 70 percent chance that by the age of 70 the individual will be on at least one drug that is influenced by your genetic make-up.

According to Lord David Prior, the Chairman of NHS England, “this will revolutionize medicine.” He added pharmacogenomics “is the future” and “it can now help us to deliver a new, modern personalized healthcare system fit for 2022”.

IPL 2022: My aim is to hit as many boundaries as I can, says Dinesh Karthik

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batter Dinesh Karthik said that his aim is to hit as many boundaries as he can in the middle order.

Ahead of his RCB’s game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy here, Karthik spoke about his role as a finisher for the team.

In the game against Punjab Kings, Karthik’s unbeaten 32 off 14 deliveries helped RCB surpass the 200 mark, however, they lost the game against the Punjab Kings.

“My aim is to hit as many boundaries as I can in the middle order. It is always a challenge, but it’s an interesting one for everybody. My role is to achieve whatever we can in the backend of the game and try to do whatever is required for the team, either setting a target or helping win the game. So, that is what I will be focussing on,” Speaking on the Inside RCB show on Star Sports, Dinesh Karthik said.

Kejriwal, AAP habitual Hindu insulter: Tejasvi Surya

0

Demanding an unconditional apology from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for “making fun” of the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national president Tejasvi Surya on Wednesday said that he and AAP are “habitual Hindu insulters”.

Surya said the BJYM will continue to protest till Kejriwal offers an unconditional apology for “mocking” Kashmiri Pandits.

He said this while addressing a press conference at the BJP national headquarters here along with BJYM national general secretary and Lok Sabha member Raju Bista.

Surya said: “Kejriwal is a habitual offender when it comes to his politics and his political interests are always over the interest of the nation. AAP has questioned time and again the commitment and integrity of security forces and he has made abundantly clear multiple times that his and AAP policy always in favor of terrorists and never in favour of victims of terror.”

Talking about the migration of Kashmiri Pandits, Surya said: “The attempt to whitewash genocide is an injustice on civilization, this attempt of whitewashing historical facts is time-tested tactics of urban naxal. He (Kejriwal) had openly provided support to the ‘tukde tukde gang’ who never had the best interest of India in their heart.”

Talking about the BJYM protest at Kejriwal’s official residence, Surya said: “This protest is not against or in favor of a particular film or in reaction to a statement against a particular movie. But it is against bigotry and inhuman mind of Kejriwal which deny the genocide and mocks Hindu genocide which took place in Kashmir.”

When asked about Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s claims that “BJP goons tried to assassinate Kejriwal”, Surya said: “It is only a figment of Sisodia’s imagination. Surya claimed that calling democratically elected parliamentarians ‘goon’ shows Sisodia’s commitment to democracy.”

“I am a democratically elected MP from Bengaluru and Raju Bista has been elected from Darjeeling… 20 lakh people elected us to Parliament. We did not come to parliament to laugh at the killing of one community. We are responsible Members of Parliament. Sisodia’s comment is undemocratic and unconstitutional. The youth of this country will teach you a very strong lesson when you face the election,” Surya said.

Condemning Sisodia’s statement, Surya urged him to take back his statement. Surya asked: “Are you (Kejriwal and Sisodia) in favour of terrorists or victims of terror?”

“The nation knows today that denying and whitewashing crime of terror is more criminal than committing terror itself. The AAP and Kejriwal are repeatedly doing this. Not the first time the urban naxal trying to whitewash genocide of Hindu from the memory of civilization,” he said.

India is going to be an unbeatable side in 10 years due to Women’s IPL: Alyssa Healy

0

Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy on Wednesday expressed her elation over the possibility of a full-fledged Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) happening next year and added that the league will make India an unbeatable side in 10 years’ time.

In the previous week, at the IPL Governing Council meeting, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) proposed the creation of a six-team women’s IPL from 2023. For the current year, the three-team women’s T20 Challenge will happen.

“I think the announcement for those competitions is pretty great. I mean, it’s exactly where we thought that the women’s game needed to go, that (women’s IPL) was like the next step. I mean, we’ve had a really successful WBBL. So it went really well, now into the Hundred, there’s sort of some thriving domestic competition, so to see the announcement of the IPL, in particular, to be able to grow the game in India is unbelievable,” said Healy in the post-match virtual press conference after Australia beat West Indies to reach the final of ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Talking about how the creation of women’s IPL will help the Indian cricketers, Healy, who featured for Trailblazers in the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2018, remarked, “It’s such an untapped market I feel in the women’s game. With so many people surely, they’re going to be unbeatable in sort of a 10-year time. They just really needed a sort of a leg up in that domestic setup to I guess, showcase what these amazing women can do. So yeah, it’s really exciting.”

With the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), The Hundred, and now the upcoming women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) taking space in the women’s cricket calendar, scheduling will bring challenges, of which Healy is fully aware.

“It (women’s IPL) was the next step and the scheduling is going to come into play. Obviously, what that looks like I’m not 100 percent certain but we’re going to have to work it out. Whether or not international players are going to be available for all the domestic competitions, with an increase in international cricket or whether there’s a focus on these domestic leagues, I’m not 100 percent certain.”

“But for first and foremost, it’s just great to see them being spoken about hopefully see them get off the ground, and if they want a 32- to 33-year-old opening better that can chirp a little bit behind the stumps. I’m available,” concluded Healy.

Shane Warne Memorial: Former teammates, world cricket greats pay tribute to legend at MCG

0

Former Australian teammates, world cricket greats, noted musicians, and tens of thousands of people paid tribute to legendary Shane Warne at his emotional state memorial service at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, here on Wednesday.

Warne, who is considered one of the greatest cricketers of all time, died aged 52 earlier this month from a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Koh Samui, Thailand.

During the service of the late spinner, his father, brother, and three children gave moving speeches in front of thousands of people in attendance at the MCG, where Warne produced some of his milestone moments – including taking his 700th wicket in test cricket in 2006.

Warne’s father Keith said the former Australia international packed more into his life “than most people would in two lifetimes”.

“Shane said of himself, ‘I smoked, I drank, and I played a little cricket’. Mate, your mother and I can’t imagine a life without you. You have been taken too soon and our hearts are broken,” he added.

The legendary cricketer finished his stellar 15-year international career in 2007 with 708 Test wickets and was named as one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the 20th century alongside Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers, Jack Hobbs, and Viv Richards.

“It has been exactly 26 days since you went to heaven and I miss you more than anything in the whole world. I would do anything just to have one more of your cuddles and to hear your voice tell me how proud of me you were and how much you loved me,” said Warne’s daughter Summer.

“I know you will be forever watching me and be by my side the whole time,” she added.

Former England skipper Nasser Hussain, Warne’s former Australia captains Mark Taylor and Allan Border, former West Indies batter Brian Lara and ex-Australia bowler Merv Hughes was also on stage to pay tribute to the spin bowler.

A number of Warne’s other Australia team-mates, bowler Glenn McGrath, wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, and ex-captain Steve Waugh, were also in the audience, along with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Musician Elton John performed “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” via video while there were similar musical performances from Ed Sheeran, Robbie Williams, and Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

At the start of the ceremony, the Australian national anthem was sung by Greta Bradman, granddaughter of legendary Australia batter Sir Donald Bradman. The service ended with the unveiling of the Shane Warne Stand at the MCG by Warne’s children.

NASA astronaut reaches Earth after spending record 355 days in space

0

Mark Vande Hei, who spent 355 days in low-Earth orbit- the longest continuous stay in space by an American – has safely returned to Earth along with two cosmonauts aboard a Russian spacecraft.

Vande Hei, along with Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov, began the journey back to Earth at 3.21 a.m. EDT (12.51 pm IST) on a Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft and had a parachute-assisted landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan, southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan, at 7.28 a.m. EDT (4:58 pm IST).

His journey home has been a source of concern amid the Ukraine conflict. After the war began, a month ago, several sanctions were imposed on Russia by the US and many European countries, which affected long-standing relations on economic, political as well space cooperation.

While media reports speculated about Vande Hei being left on the ISS, Russia officially denied the speculation.

“The US astronaut due to return to Earth soon will do so as scheduled onboard Russia’s space capsule vehicle on March 30,” a report in TASS, a Russian state news organization, said.

Vande Hei arrived at the International Space Station on April 9, 2021, and spent the longest period – 355 days. Previously, the record was held by retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, who spent 340 days on the ISS in 2015 and 2016, the space agency said.

During his tenure on the ISS, Vande Hei contributed to dozens of studies, including six science investigations supported by NASA’s Human Research Programme, or HRP.

For one investigation, Vande Hei helped grow and evaluate vegetables harvested with the space station’s Vegetable Production System or Veggie. The investigation seeks to develop a food production system that can help astronauts meet their dietary needs with fresh vegetables cultivated in space.

Vande Hei also provided biological samples for an investigation that collects a core set of measurements, called Spaceflight Standard Measures.

The investigation seeks to characterize “normal” changes in the human body during spaceflight. For instance, wrist-worn sensors that measure activity levels and light exposure can help researchers better understand the sleep-wake cycle of astronauts.

Blood and saliva samples collected by crew members throughout their mission can also help scientists assess changes in various hormones, proteins, and cells that reveal how the immune system changes in space.

In addition, he contributed to a separate investigation by collecting biological samples from the crew aboard the space station and placing them in a storage bank, from which researchers can draw upon the samples to study spaceflight-induced changes in human physiology.

Another humanitarian route was established in the eastern Donetsk region to evacuate people from the city of Mariupol, where active hostilities are underway, she added.

Last Thursday, Ukraine established seven humanitarian corridors, following nine corridors the previous day, according to Ukraine’s government-run Ukrinform news agency.

Kohli, Pant, Sharma slip further in Test rankings; Ashwin No. 2 among all-rounders

Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja’s superb run in the recently-concluded away series against Pakistan has seen him leapfrog batting stalwarts such as David Warner, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Rohit Sharma and Travis Head to jump six spots to No.7 in the latest ICC Test Rankings for batters released on Wednesday.

India’s Rohit Sharma and Kohli have dropped one place to eighth and 10th respectively, while Pant is out of the top-10 and is 11th in the latest rankings list.

Khawaja was easily the standout batter in the three-match Test series against Pakistan, having aggregated 496 runs from five innings at a mindboggling 165.33. His scores in the series read 97, 160, 44 not out, 91 and 104 not out — the last two coming in Australia’s series-clinching 115-run win in the third Test at Lahore. That was after he had begun the year with twin hundreds in the New Year’s drawn Ashes Test in Sydney, which happened to be his comeback to the format after more than two years.

Pakistan’s Abdullah Shafique, who finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the series with 397 runs at 79.40, has jumped 22 spots to break into the top-40, while Mohammad Rizwan has slipped eight spots to No. 19.

England skipper Joe Root has slipped to No.4, with Australia’s Steve Smith and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson taking up the No. 2 and 3 positions respectively in a chart led by Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne.

Among all-rounders, India’s Ravindra Jadeja continues to retain the top position, while Ravichandran Ashwin has displaced West Indies’ Jason Holder at the No.2 spot. West Indies all-rounder Kyle Mayers brilliance against England in the third Test at Grenada has helped him leap a staggering 29 spots to No. 11.

Among bowlers, Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah are placed second and fourth respectively in a field led by Aussie Test skipper Pat Cummins. Mayers, who bagged 2/13 and 5/18 in the third Test, his only appearance in the series, has jumped 33 spots to No.48 among bowlers as well. Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi has displaced New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson to claim the fifth spot, while Australian pace bowler Mitchell Starc has jumped four spots to No.11.

In fact, Cummins has further consolidated his status as the top-ranked Test bowler, after having bagged 12 wickets from three Tests, including a game-changing five-for in the third.

In ODIs, Adam Zampa jumped six positions to break into top 10 in the latest ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers. Zampa returned 4/38 in Australia’s 88-run win over Pakistan on March 29. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan jumped four spots to No. 8, while fellow countryman Taskin Ahmed jumped up 15 spots to No.33, with the latter having returned 5/35 in Bangladesh’s dominant nine-wicket win over South Africa last week. South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada meanwhile, has slipped from No.8 to No. 13.

Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal has jumped to No.20 in the batting rankings, while South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has slipped a spot to fifth, being overtaken by Rohit Sharma. Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq’s gallant hundred on Tuesday has helped him return to the top 10.

Babar Azam, Trent Boult and Shakib continue to top the batting, bowling and the all-rounders’ charts respectively.

Will spell out stand after studying objections to halal meat: K’taka CM

After calls for ban on halal products in Karnataka grew, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said that the state government would spell out its stand after studying the issue.

In the latest campaign targeting Muslims, Hindu organisations and BJP leaders in the state have begun raising objections to sale of halal meat to Hindus. The development comes in the wake of the recent ban calls made by the right wing groups on Muslim shops and stalls at Hindu religious fairs and temple premises in the coastal regions of Karnataka.

Halal meat is prepared as per Muslim religious rites and all Muslims are supposed to consume only halal meat. With the meat and poultry sold in Muslim shops also prepared as per halal customs, right wing organisations are calling on Hindus to boycott such shops. They describe sale of halal meat to Hindus as a form of economic jihad.

“The issue has to be studied in its entirety,” Bommai told media persons on Wednesday. The Chief Minister said that the state government will examine the serious objections raised in some quarters over the issue.

“There are no rules as such. It was a practice that was going on. Now, serious objections are raised. We will look into it,” he said.

Bommai refused to be drawn into the controversial calls for boycott of halal meat, being raised by Hindu right wing groups in the state. Pointing out that similar campaigns have been organised. “We’ll respond to those who need a response,” he said.

Twitter working on feature that would allow multiple users to co-author a tweet

0

Micro-blogging site Twitter is working on a feature that would allow multiple users to co-author a tweet, which it is referring to as “Collaborations”.

The option has yet to be made publicly available and only works after one user accepts a request to collaborate with another reports TechCrunch.

It also seemingly hints at a possible plan to give creators a way to partner with businesses on brand ad deals — something that is already common on rival social networks like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and others.

Twitter’s “Collaborations” feature was first dug up from the app’s code by mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who, back in December 2021, shared references he found that indicated Twitter was working on a way for two people to become co-authors on a single tweet.

In this scenario, both people’s Twitter handles and names would appear at the top of the tweet above its content.

Earlier this year, Paluzzi uncovered that a collaborations button had been added to the tweet composer screen and he discovered how the co-authors’ profile pictures would appear — one overlaid on top of the other -; when their tweeted-out “Collab” showed up in the Twitter Timeline.

Now, Paluzzi has again found further evidence of the feature’s development when he tweeted out a screenshot that explains how Twitter Collaborations would work.

Twitter explained users would first ask a person or brand to “co-own” a tweet with them and wait for them to accept the request. When the other user accepts the request, both accounts are shown as co-authors on the tweet, Twitter explains in this introductory screen.

Paluzzi told TechCrunch he has not found anything in the code that would limit this feature’s availability only to select users — like creators using Twitter’s Super Follows, for instance.

LinkedIn forced to change global policy over job posting removal

0

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has changed its global policy for job postings after Brazilian authorities flagged the removal of postings on its platform that was exclusive to black and indigenous professionals.

The professional networking website faced severe criticism for excluding a job opening by the Centre for the Analysis of Freedom and Authoritarianism in Brazil.

In the job posting, the Brazilian organization expressed that preference would be given to black and indigenous candidates in the selection process, reports ZDNet.

“We have updated our global job posting policy to allow publication of publications that express a preference for professionals from historically disadvantaged groups in hiring in countries where this practice is considered legal,” the company said in a statement late on Tuesday.

LinkedIn’s global policy prohibits discrimination in job postings based on characteristics such as age, gender, disability, ethnicity, race, and sexual orientation.

After the job vacancy was removed, the platform received severe criticism from its Brazilian users.

“In Brazil, affirmative vacancies are now allowed, including [job postings] for black and indigenous people. We appreciate the feedback we have received from our community in Brazil,” said LinkedIn.

LinkedIn was also notified by the consumer protection agency Procon-SP, who requested the professional networking website clarify the job posting process.

Miami Open: Osaka fires 13 aces to secure semifinal clash against Bencic

0

Former world No.1 and winner of four Grand Slams, Naomi Osaka of Japan, lost only three games in her 6-2, 6-1 victory over No.9 seed Danielle Collins of the US to make it to her maiden Miami Open semifinal on Wednesday (IST).

The Florida native fired 13 aces against the Australian Open semifinalist en route to meeting defending champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the last four. With the victory, the twice US Open and two-time Australian Open winner became the second Japanese woman to reach the last-four at the Miami Open since Kimiko Date Krumm did so in 1993 and 1995.

If Osaka beats Bencic in the semifinal, it will be the 24-year-old Japanese player’s first WTA 1000 final since 2020.

Osaka has not lost a set en route to the Miami semifinals, having defeated Astra Sharma of Australia, Angelique Kerber of Germany, Alison Riske of the US, and No.9 seed Collins. She has now won nine of her last 10 quarterfinals and carries a strong record in semifinals into her match against Bencic, who she has yet to beat in a tour-level match, according to wtatennis.com.

“I’m glad I was able to get through quickly. I focused on trying to hit a lot of really good returns,” Osaka said following her 60-minute win. “This is actually my first night match too, so I didn’t know what the conditions would be like.”

Miami will be Osaka’s 18th career semifinal, with 16 having come on her favored hard courts. The two exceptions came on the grass at 2018 Nottingham and clay at 2019 Stuttgart. Since the start of 2019, Osaka is 6-1 in contested semifinals.

“After Australia, I was training really hard every day,” Osaka said. “I went to Indian Wells with the intention to do really well, and then I didn’t. But (coach) Wim (Fissette) told me, ‘Listen, you’re playing really well. But it’s hard to listen to someone tell you you’re playing well without having the results to back it up.

“I’m glad that, in a way, I don’t have a good ranking, because I’m able to play the matches that I need to play. I feel like I’m the type of person that plays better with more matches, so actually having back-to-back matches benefits me a lot.” Osaka is currently ranked No. 77 in the world.

She will now turn her focus to Bencic, who has also looked in dominant form. Seeded No.22 this week, Bencic has not lost a set and has lost just 17 games across her four matches. On Wednesday, she defeated Daria Saville of Australia 6-1, 6-2.

Osaka’s solitary win against Bencic came on the ITF level back in 2013. The 25-year-old Swiss has beaten Osaka in their three matches on the WTA Tour, with their last meeting coming at the 2019 US Open Round of 16.

“I get really emotional when I play people around my age or younger,” Osaka said. “I don’t know if it’s like this thing that I want to be better than them, but I just automatically put a lot of pressure on myself. I kind of acknowledged that after I lost to Coco (Gauff) that one year. I’m just like, you know what? I’m at the age there is going to be a bunch of young, really good players, and I have to respect them and know that they are here for a reason. I was once in their shoes.

“I think my mentality was a very big part of my losses back then. Hopefully, it will be better, because I feel like I have kind of worked through it. So hopefully on Thursday, it will be more about tennis. She’s a really good tennis player. She won the gold in Tokyo, which I really wanted to win. She’s clearly ranked where she is for a reason.”

Facing criticism over the liquor ban, the Nitish Kumar government has decided to introduce the Bihar Liquor Prohibition Bill 2022 in the state Assembly on Wednesday.

Under the amendment, there is a provision for the first-time offenders to get bail from the duty magistrate after depositing a fine. In case the offender is not able to deposit the fine, he/she is liable to face one month in jail.

There is also a provision that when an offender is nabbed by the police for the ban violation, the accused has to disclose the name of the person from where liquor was obtained.

The Nitish Kumar government seeks to pass the Bill in the Vidhan Sabha smoothly and has distributed copies of the amendment Bill to every MLA to read it.

The Bihar Chief Minister imposed a liquor ban in April 2016 in the state through the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act. After the ban, a large number of people have been lodged in jails only for liquor consumption. The majority of the violators belong to economically weaker sections and the poor people. Even hearing for bail in simple cases is taking one year time in the courts.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana had said last year that the decisions like the liquor ban of the Bihar government in 2016 have put a huge burden on courts. “There are three lakh cases pending in the courts. People are waiting for justice for a long time and now the excessive cases related to liquor violations put an additional burden on courts,” the CJI had said.
