IOC thanks Beijing 2022 for memorable Olympic Winter Games

0

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed its gratitude to the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee for successfully conducting the Olympic Winter Games amid Covid-19 protocols and despite controversies over human alleged rights violations and diplomatic boycott.

The IOC organized a thank-you event at the Big Air venue in Shougang Park in Beijing on Monday to express its gratitude to the Chinese authorities.

During the ceremony, the Olympic Order in Gold – the IOC’s highest honor for individuals – was presented by IOC President Thomas Bach to Sun Chunlan, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, responsible for the anti-COVID management of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, and Cai Qi, President of the Organising Committee for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, the IOC informed in a report on its official website.

In addition, Thomas Bach presented the Olympic Order in Silver to some senior officials of the organizing committee who made significant contributions to the delivery of the Games.

The IOC’s Beijing 2022 Coordination Commission Chair, Juan Antonio Samaranch, took the opportunity to thank the thousands of Beijing 2022 workforce and volunteers, many of whom have been living inside the closed-loop while delivering the Games.

He said, “You and all your teams have done incredible work to tackle the different challenges. You have always been responsible, responsive and efficient to all our requests. Thanks for your strong commitment and dedication. You ensured that these Olympic Winter Games were memorable.”

President Qi, from the Organising Committee, concluded, “As the first city to host both summer and winter Olympic Games, Beijing 2022 will go down in history. We will continue to work with the IOC to spread the Olympic spirit, enhance inclusiveness and mutual understanding, promote friendship and solidarity, and jointly shape a better future.”

Though the IOC gets credit for getting the Games organised successfully, it has faced severe criticism over its silence on issues like alleged human rights abuses by the Chinese, the alleged suppression of Uyghur Muslims and the general denial of fundamental rights in China.

YouTube adds TikTok-style live rings to show when someone is streaming

0

Google-owned video-streaming giant YouTube is adding a new indicator to show when a channel is live streaming on the platform.

The feature would make it easier to find live content. The new update will display a ring with the word “Live” on it around a channel’s profile picture when they are live streaming.

“Really focused on making it easier for users to find live streams on YouTube, so we are rolling out the Live ring feature on mobile. YouTube creators streaming live will now have a ring around the channel avatar and clicking on it will take you directly to the live stream,” Neal Mohan, Chief Product Officer, YouTube, said in a statement.

Currently, TikTok uses a pulsing ring effect on a channel’s profile picture to alert the user that it is life.

Meanwhile, YouTube TV is finally getting support for picture-in-picture (PiP) on iPhone and iPad.

Mohan said while he couldn’t share an exact date, picture-in-picture support on iOS should arrive “hopefully in the next few months” for YouTube TV users.

The feature has been available to Android users for quite a while, but support for YouTube TV users on iOS is long overdue.

YouTube TV is also working on expanding some other features that include surround sound, which was launched last year on a very limited subset of devices.

Hijab row: K’taka HC resumes hearing; many students boycott exams

0

A three-judge panel of Karnataka High Court, formed to look into the petitions on hijab row, resumed hearing on Monday afternoon.

Even as the bench headed by the Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi is hearing the matter on a day-to-today basis, the hijab crisis continues in the state, raising concerns over the law and order situation.

Meanwhile, many students across the state have boycotted crucial II PUC practical exams that have started on Monday for not being allowed to wear hijab in the classrooms. However, majority of the students, including those from Muslim community, took off their hijab and attended exams.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant has extended the prohibitory orders surrounding 200 meters of surroundings of schools, PU Colleges, Degree Colleges or other educational institutions till March 8.

If II PUC students remain absent for practical exams they will lose out 30 marks and that will make them get a maximum score of 70 marks in theory exams. To attend CET, the students will have to score a minimum of 45 marks. The scores of practical exams are crucial for the future of students.

The main exams are scheduled between April 16 and May 6. Practical exams will be held for physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, computer science and electronics subjects. The marks will be uploaded to the website of PU Board immediately after exams. If students remain absent for practical exams, no second chance would be given to them.

More than 40 students in Vijayapura district boycotted exams for being asked to remove hijab and staging protests before the District Commissioner’s Office. More than 10 students refused to take off their hijab and waited near Women’s Polytechnic College in Hassan on the premises. Later, they got into an argument with the Principal demanding entry into classes with hijab.

Prohibitory orders will continue in Koppal district till February 26. The district administration has warned that around 300 meter radius more than five people can’t gather. Meanwhile, the six students who started the agitation at Udupi Pre-University Girl’s College have remained absent for the practical exams.

As many as nine students of Madikeri Junior College staged a silent protest at the entrance gate. They sat near the gate holding placards containing messages of ‘hijab is our right, our choice’, ‘we want justice’.

Students of Kolar Government Pre-University College demanded a letter from the Principal for not allowing them with hijab to classrooms. They claimed that the court has consented for the entry of students in colleges which do not have a college development committee. They have also staged a protest.

The larger bench has directed the state government to see to it that it’s interim order is not violated. Counsels for petitioners have been vehemently pressing for allowing Muslim students with hijab by reconsidering interim order. One of the counsels has requested the court to allow Muslim students to wear hijab at least on Fridays, the jumma day which is considered as most auspicious day for Muslims.

The counsels have also submitted that there is no legal sanctity for the College Development Committee (CDC) and School Development and Management Committees (SDMC). They have also questioned MLA, representing a political party and ideology being let in the academic environment.

The bench has already questioned Advocate General Prabhuling Navadagi representing the government on the legal sanctity of CDCs and SDMCs. He had submitted that the order issued by the government on February 5, did not ban the headscarf but only gave the power of deciding on uniform to CDCs. He also clarified that the government has taken a conscious stand not to intervene in the matters related to religious symbols and it is unnecessarily being dragged into the issue.

The Advocate General will present his arguments on three points and stated firstly he would prove that hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam, preventing its use did not violate Article 25 of the Indian constitution and the challenged Government Order was in accordance with law. The bench has questioned Advocate General on why the government has referred to verdicts given by the high courts and the Supreme Court while giving the order.

Telangana model can be replicated across India: KTR

Telangana’s minister for information technology and industry K. T. Rama Rao has described the state as the most successful startup and said the Telangana model of development can be replicated across India.

The minister delivered a keynote address at the Harvard India Conference 2022 held virtually late Sunday.

During the one-hour-long session, he highlighted the all-around development of Telangana, the Hyderabad IT ecosystem, friendly industrial policies, and investment opportunities existing in the state.

Minister KTR spoke at the conference under the theme “Turbocharging India @ 2030. “If I want to talk about Turbocharging India @ 2030, I should speak about Turbocharging Telangana since 2014,” the Minister said in his opening lines.

“By 2030, I want to witness an India that leads the world, in almost every category. I strongly believe that cues for “Turbocharging India@ 2030: can be had from “Turbocharged Telangana since 2014, a said KTR.

KTR stated that the schemes and policies being executed in Telangana should be executed across the country to speed up the development wheel of India. “What Telangana has done, can be done at the national level too. Telangana Model of Development can be replicated across India, for sure,” said KTR.

“Growth should be distributed fairly across society and create opportunities for all. I think that any one-sided policy emphasis will have negative effects. Diversity is India’s greatest asset. The same diversity requires the widening of policy frameworks beyond the narrow focus,” the minister opined.

KTR stated that the Telangana government’s effective policy design & implementation, equal focus on rural and urban development, vision towards 3 I’s — infrastructure development, inclusive growth, and innovation — helped the youngest state of India achieve remarkable progress in just 7 years.

Telangana has been progressing under the visionary leadership of CM KCR. The Telangana government’s equal focus on development and welfare measures has made it a model state which is being emulated by other states, KTR said. “It used to be said earlier that what Bengal thinks today is what the country thinks tomorrow, but in the modern context it is what Telangana thinks today which influences the country tomorrow,” he added.

KTR stated that Telangana achieved the third rank in the country in terms of percentage increase in GSDP at current prices between 2014-15 and 2020-21. “The NITI Aayog report says that the Gross State Domestic Product of Telangana by provisional estimates was Rs 9.80 lakh crore, an increase of 94 percent from its 2014-15 value,” he added.

Minister KTR highlighted that despite the Covid-induced economic slowdown in 2020-21, Telangana’s Per Capita Income (PCI) of Rs 2.37 lakh at current pricing is the third highest in the country — the latest data from the Union ministry of statistics and program implementation.

“Telangana is the 11th largest state in terms of geographical area and 12th in terms of population in the country. I am proud of the fact that Telangana stood in fourth place in contributing to the economy of the country,” KTR said.

The state government’s focus on every sector — from agriculture to IT, power generation to industry, health infrastructure to quality education has brought remarkable progress in the state.

He pointed out that Telangana attracted over Rs 2.2 lakh crore investments since the launch of its innovative TS-iPASS industrial policy. These investments employed about 16 lakh people.

The minister highlighted that Hyderabad has emerged as a global hub for some of the most marquee names from the IT world. “You will be amazed to learn that the five most valued tech companies of the world, namely Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook, each of them has their second-largest presence anywhere in the world outside their headquarters in the US in our city of Hyderabad,” KTR said.

“The cabins of the US President’s ‘Marine One helicopters are made in Hyderabad by Tata Sikorsky Aerospace Systems, a joint venture between the Tata Group and Sikorsky,” said the minister. He also highlighted that Hyderabad produces one-third of global vaccine output. “I take immense pride in saying that Hyderabad is the vaccine capital of the world,” he added.

He highlighted that seven villages from Telangana ranked among the top 10 under the SAGY program (Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana of Union Ministry of Rural Development).

He told the conference that Telangana is building the Kakatiya Mega Textiles Factory (KMTP), one of the world’s largest Textile Parks. KMTP is expected to house state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities with a development strategy based on the ‘Fiber to Fashion’ concept.

“IT exports of Telangana touched a new high of Rs 1.45 lakh crore in 2021. Since the formation of Telangana, we have been able to achieve a Compound Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.25 percent, up from Rs 57,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 1.45 lakh crore now. Employment in the IT/ITeS sector had also increased by eight percent to touch 6.3 lakhs”.

KTR stated that the government of Telangana is developing Hyderabad Pharma City as the “World’s largest integrated pharma park to promote domestic manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and to consolidate the leadership position of India in the pharmaceutical sector.

“Telangana has already built the world’s largest lift irrigation scheme, Kaleshwaram Project, in just three years. This is a record in the history of irrigation projects in India,” he said.

“Rythu Bandhu, the investment support scheme under which every landholding farmer gets Rs 10,000 per acre every year. The brainchild of CM Sri KCR, this revolutionary is one of the best reforms in the agriculture sector in the country since Independence,” KTR added.

La Liga Review: Good weekend for Real as Sevilla only top-6 side not to win

0

Real Madrid reopened a six-point lead at the top of La Liga after they won 3-0 at home to Alaves, while second-place Sevilla was held to a 1-1 draw away to Espanyol on Sunday evening.

Marco Asensio, Vinicius Jr, and Karim Benzema were all on target as Real Madrid scored three goals in the last 27 minutes to claim a 3-0 win at home to struggling Alaves.

Real Madrid had struggled in the first half and was booed off the pitch at halftime by a sector of their fans, but that changed in the 63rd minute when Asensio produced a goal out of nothing with a curling left-foot shot.

Vinicius Jr then doubled their lead with 10 minutes left to play as Madrid was able to play on the break and Karim Benzema scored an injury-time penalty to make it 3-0, Xinhua reports. Sevilla looked to be on track for a win away to Espanyol when Rafa Mir finished at the far post to put them 1-1 up in the 36th minute, but Sergi Darder’s second goal in two games, early in the second half saw the points shared.

Jules Kounde was then shown an extremely harsh red card to leave Sevilla with 10 men and Lucas Ocampos also got a booking that will see him miss next weekend’s derby against Betis.

Betis remain just a place behind their neighbors after a tight 2-1 win at home to Mallorca which came thanks to an 83rd minute Willian Jose penalty for handball.

Alex Moreno had put the home side in front in the 25th minute, but recent Mallorca signing Vedat Muriqi leveled for the visitors with a powerful header that would ultimately be in vain.

FC Barcelona remains fourth with a convincing 4-1 win away to Valencia in the Mestalla Stadium.

Barca was hugely effective in attack, getting all six of their shots in the game on target, with four of them hitting the new. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice, while Frenkie de Jong also netted to finish off an excellent move as Barca went in 3-0 at the break.

Although Carlos Soler pulled a goal back with a header, Pedri, who came on as a second-half substitute netted Barca’s fourth with a thumping shot with 27 minutes still to play.

Athletic Club Bilbao kept in touch with the battle for Europe on Sunday evening with a 4-0 thrashing of local rivals, Real Sociedad in the Basque derby.

Iker Muniain saw a penalty saved in the first half, but in the end, it didn’t matter as Athletic rolled over their rivals in the second half with goals from Dani Vivian, Orhan Sancet, Inaki Williams and Muniain. All of the goals came in a 20-minute spell after Vivian opened the scoring with a powerful header from a corner.

Goals from Joao Felix, Luis Suarez (who scored almost halfway), and Angel Correa, gave Atletico Madrid a much-needed win away to Osasuna, who had more chances but lacked effectiveness in front of goal.

Arnaut Danjuma’s scored a hat-trick as Villarreal continued good form with a 4-1 win away to Granada, which leaves the home side in trouble.

Danjuma put Villarreal 2-0 up by halftime and although Luis Milla’s penalty gave Granada hope of a comeback, Danjuma also scored a penalty, before Moi Gomez added a fourth in injury time.

Alvaro Negredo scored in the second minute of first-half injury time to save a point for struggling Cadiz at home to Getafe, who opened the scoring with Borja Mayoral’s sixth-minute penalty.

Elche took another step away from the bottom three after goals from Guido Carrillo and Ezequiel Ponce saw them first back from a goal down at home to Rayo Vallecano.

3rd T20I: Suryakumar, Venkatesh and bowlers help India to 3-0 series win over West Indies

0

A classy fifty from Suryakumar Yadav (65 off 31) and an aggressive knock by Venkatesh Iyer (35 off 19) followed by a clinical bowling effort helped India beat West Indies by 17 runs in the 3rd T20I and complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the three-match series, at the Eden Gardens, here on Sunday.

With this, India won all the six white-ball matches against the touring West Indies side, who had a disappointing outing in major parts of the series.

Put into bat, India lost wickets at regular intervals and were in trouble at 93-4 but a classy fifty from Suryakumar Yadav (65 off 31) and an aggressive knock by Venkatesh Iyer (35 off 19) came to their rescue.

The pair stitched a big partnership of 91 runs for the fifth wicket and propelled India to 184-5 in 20 overs. Apart from Suryakumar and Venkatesh, Ishan Kishan also played a vital knock of 34 off 31 balls but once again he was not at his fluent best.

Chasing a challenging total, West Indies lost Kyle Mayers in the very first over as Deepak Chahar found the outside edge. Avesh Khan who came to bowl the next over had a poor start in his first over in international cricket, conceding 11 runs as Nicholas Pooran hit him for two fours.

Hope also got into the act with a couple of boundaries off Chahar but the bowler hit back with his swing, getting the batter to the outside edge to the ‘keeper with his outswing. Hope departed for eight, leaving West Indies at 26/2 in the third over. However, India suffered a setback as Chahar walked off the field due to an injury in the same over.

Despite losing two quick wickets, Rovman Powell and Pooran began dealing in boundaries and took the visitors to 68/2 at the end of the powerplay. But Harshal in his very first over of the spell dismissed Powell (25) to give India a much-needed wicket, ending a 47-run stand that came off only 25 deliveries.

Thereafter Venkatesh Iyer picked up two wickets of Kieron Pollard and Jason Holder in quick succession. But Pooran kept his side alive by hitting another fifty of the series.

Romario Shepherd joined the onslaught to give Pooran good company, who eventually fell for 61 by Thakur. The visitors needed 37 from the final three overs but Pooran fell for 61 in the 18th overs bowled by Thakur. Romario Shepherd (29 off 21) tried hard but it was not enough as West Indies were restricted to 167-9 in 20 overs, losing the match by 17 runs.

Harshal Patel (3/22), Deepak Chahar (2/15), Venkatesh Iyer (2/23), Shardul Thakur (2/33) were the wicket-takers for India.

Earlier, India sent a new pair of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad to open the innings. However, it didn’t yield a positive result as Jason Holder dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad for four, giving West Indies the first breakthrough in the 3rd over of the innings.

Shreyas Iyer, who was playing his first match of the series then joined Ishan at the crease. The duo hit a flurry of boundaries to tilt the momentum back in India’s favor, taking hosts to 43/1 after six overs.

Hayden Walsh then put down a tough return catch to give Kishan a reprieve in the seventh over while Iyer whipped a Chase delivery to the cow-corner region for a four in the eighth over, bringing the 50-run stand for the second wicket between him and Ishan off 32 balls.

Just when it looked like the Indian batters would up the ante, Walsh struck in his second over to pick up the wicket of Iyer (25 off 16), who tried to go over the top but wasn’t in full control of the shot and ended up slicing it to Holder at long-off. Soon, Roston Chase got rid of Kishan, who attempted the pull shot off but the ball came on straight and the batter was eventually bowled. Kishan departed for 34 off 31, leaving India at 66/3 after 9.3 overs.

After losing two quick wickets, India was in a spot of bother but the pair of Suryakumar Yadav and skipper Rohit Sharma had a much-needed partnership between them. Though Suryakumar, who looked in fine touch was the major contributor between the two as Rohit was far from his best.

It was Dominic Drakes, who gave the visitors their next wicket, dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma for 7 off 15 in the 14th over. From there on, Suryakumar and Venkatesh Iyer mixed caution with aggression and kept the scoreboard ticking with boundaries at regular intervals.

Both Suryakumar and Venkatesh played some beautiful shots and took 17 runs each in 16th and 17th overs respectively. Holder gave away only four off the first four balls of the 18th over but Venkatesh hit one six at the fine-leg fence off the fifth ball. Thereafter, Iyer and Suryakumar dealt in boundaries in the last two overs. During the process, Surya hit his fifty in the first ball of the last over and smashed two more sixes before getting out in the last delivery.

Overall, India got the much-needed late impetus after a top-order failure as both Venkatesh and Suryakumar scored 86 runs in the last five overs, taking India to 184-5 in 20 overs.

Brief scores:

India 184-5 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 65, Venkatesh Iyer 35; Roston Chase 1/23) beat West Indies 167-9 in 20 Overs (Nicholas Pooran 61; Harshal Patel 3/22, Deepak Chahar 2/15 ) by 17 runs

Happy with the series win…pleasing to see guys bailing team out from tough situations: Rohit Sharma

0

After an impressive 3-0 clean sweep over West Indies in the T20Is, India skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday said that he is very happy with the result and it was pleasing to see new guys bailing the team out of tough situations in the absence of regular players.

A classy fifty from Suryakumar Yadav (65 off 31) and an aggressive knock by Venkatesh Iyer (35 off 19) followed by a clinical bowling effort helped India beat West Indies by 17 runs in the 3rd T20I and complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the three-match series, at the Eden Gardens.

“Happy with the series. Pretty much got everything that we wanted. We do understand we are very young as a team. We are still a good chasing side, but a lot of the players are missing. So we wanted the guys to understand how to bat in pressure situations. It was pleasing to see guys bailing the team out from tough situations. Good sign moving forward as a group and something to be proud of,” said Sharma in the post-match presentation.

The skipper also praised the bowlers for their impressive performances in both ODI and T20I series.

“I was very impressed with our seam bowling in ODIs. And even here. Harshal is new. Avesh is on debut. Shardul is in and out. So the challenge for us was to give them game time and see how they respond. When you play against a team like the West Indies, you can test your batting and bowling. They bat very deep. It was a good challenge to defend in both games,” he said.

Sharma also highlighted the importance of work-load management, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup in Australia.

“A few guys miss out on the Sri Lanka series because we want to keep them fresh. But we have the World Cup in mind and we are trying to give game time for individuals. Sri Lanka will be a different challenge. But I am not someone who looks at the opposition, I would like to see what we can do as a team,” he said.

Talking about the few areas of improvement, Sharma said, “Ground fielding, catching is something we can correct. Hopefully, we can tick that box as well.”

Tens of thousands of devotees offered prayers to tribal deities at Medaram in the Mulugu district of Telangana on Saturday on the last day of Medaram Jatara.

Tribals from different parts of Telangana and neighboring states made a beeline to pay obeisance to Sammakka and Saralamma and offer jaggery as per the tradition.

The four-day fair considered the largest tribal fair in Asia came to an end with the priests taking back the deities to the forest as per the tradition.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan was among those who offered prayers on the last day of Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, the governor offered prayers and made the offerings.

The tribal priests, officials, Mulugu MLA Seetakka, and others welcomed the governor, who went round the ‘Gaddelu’ and performed the special pujas duly following the traditional native rituals.

Later, interacting with the media persons, she stated that she had offered prayers for the wellbeing of the nation and the State. She extended special wishes to the tribal people on the celebration of the native tribal festival and termed the fair as one of the unique native tribal celebrations in the country.

The governor emphasized the need to promote, protect, and perpetuate the rich and unique cultural traditions and practices of the indigenous people.

Referring to her road journey to Medaram, Soundararajan said that she thought it would give her an opportunity to better understand the conditions at the grassroots level and connect better with the people in rural and tribal habitations.

The governor highlighted the need to work intensively for the all-around development of the tribal population and stated that the Raj Bhavan’s initiative to improve the nutritional status of the people belonging to the primitive tribal groups was one such activity.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who was scheduled to visit Medaram to take part in the tribal fair on Friday, canceled his program at the last moment. No reasons were given for the cancellation of the visit.

State ministers Errabelli Dayakar Rao, Gangula Kamalakar, Malla Reddy, Indrakaran Reddy, and T. Srinivas Yadav, and several MLAs of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) were in Medaram on Friday to welcome the chief minister.

BJP’s state president Bandi Sanjay, who attended the tribal festival on Friday, slammed the chief minister for canceling his visit. He alleged that KCR has insulted the tribal community and Telangana culture by skipping the festival.

Union minister for tourism and culture G. Kishan Reddy had also visited Medaram on Friday and participated in the rituals.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president A. Revanth Reddy also had darshan at Medaram Jatara on Saturday. Like all other devotees, he offered ‘bangaram’ (jaggery) to the deities.

Revanth Reddy, who is also a member of Lok Sabha, said Medaram Jatara should be declared a national festival. He said it was unfortunate that the state and the central governments were not giving proper recognition to the festival, which is next only to Kumbh Mela.

Over a crore, people are estimated to have visited Jatara during the last few days. Many devotees offered prayers even before the beginning of the fair on February 16.

Tribals congregate at Medaram once in two years to celebrate the valor of legendary warriors Sammakka and Sarakka.

The tribals treat them as goddesses and hail their bravery in trying to protect them. Belonging to the Koya tribe, the mother-daughter duo died while fighting against the Kakatiya empire.

The legend is that Sammakka and her daughter Saralamma fought against the levy of taxes on tribals during drought conditions by the then Kakatiya rulers in the 12th century.

Tribal king Medaraju was ruling the tribal habitations on the banks of river Godavari and was supposed to pay a royalty to the Kakatiya kings. However, due to severe prolonged drought, Medaraju failed to pay a royalty. Treating it as defiance, the Kakatiya Kings invaded the region. Fighting with the Kakatiya army, Medaraju and all kin died. His daughter Sammakka and her daughter Sarakka or Saralamma too died in the fight.

According to local lore, Sammakka who was fatigued went above the Chilukalagutta hillocks and disappeared. The Adivasis who reportedly went in search of her only found a casket of vermilion under a bamboo tree.

Modi inaugurates Garuda Aerospace’s manufacturing facilities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually inaugurated the drone manufacturing facilities of Garuda Aerospace at Manesar in Gurugram and in Chennai, said a top company official.

The Chennai-based Garuda Aerospace is a drone-as-a-service (DAAS) company.

According to Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder & CEO, Garuda Aerospace, Modi virtually inaugurated the drone manufacturing facilities in two locations and also pressed a button resulting in the taking off of 100 Kisan drones simultaneously in 100 villages.

The 100 drones commenced agriculture spraying operations in 16 different states to celebrate 75 years of Independence as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, Jayaprakash added.

“Glad to have witnessed Kisan Drones in action at 100 places across the country. This is a commendable initiative by a vibrant start-up, @garuda_india. Innovative technology will empower our farmers and make agriculture more profitable,” Modi tweeted.

Modi said the occasion will not just be a milestone for the drone sector but also open up a multitude of possibilities.

“I have been told that Garuda Aerospace has planned 1 lakh ‘Made in India’ drones in the next two years. This will give employment and opportunities to hundreds of youth,” Modi said.

The Budget announcements this year had prioritized technology and innovation and mentioned the use of Kisan drones among the varied sectors wherein drones can be used.

“Having liberalized the Drone Rules in 2021, the government has consistently been encouraging Aatmanirbhar Bharat with major policy decisions on Drone Shakthi and banning the import of foreign Drones,” Modi added.

“We have reposed our faith in the young talent and brought in new suitable policies,” the Prime Minister said and appreciated the youngsters taking risks in the new field even as he assured that the Centre will always back them.

Garuda has taken space on lease for making its drones from Defsys Solutions in Gurugram, Jayaprakash said.

According to him, Defsys Solutions’ facility is equipped with advanced design and prototype testing capabilities.

The 2.5-acre facility is a hub for drone software design, hardware structural testing, type certification, and manufacturing capacity of 40 drones per day.

Garuda’s proposed Chennai plant is located on a 20-acre facility where mass volume manufacturing capacity of 100 drones per day and manufacturing of 100,000 Kisan drones are being planned over the next two years, Jayaprakash added.

The site is also the proposed RPTO (Remote Pilot Training) facility which aims to train aspiring drone pilots.

“Having our drone facilities launched by the Prime Minister fuels Garuda’s vision to become India’s first-ever drone unicorn startup that manufactures six lakh drones and deploy one drone in each Indian village by 2025,” Jayaprakash said.

India’s Arjun Khade joined hands with Austrian Alexander Erler to win the doubles title in the Bengaluru Open 2 ATP Challenger here on Saturday.

It was a big treat for local tennis buffs, who had turned out in good number at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association, to watch an Indian player winning the title.

The top-seeded pair defeated the third-seeded Indian duo and defending champions Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-7 in the final.

Meanwhile, in the singles semi-finals, top seed Aleksandar Vukic halted the run of last week’s finalist Borna Gojo of Croatia with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory. In the title clash, the Australian will meet Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov, who scripted an epic comeback victory against third-seeded Frenchman Enzo Couacaud, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Couacaud seemed to be in better control of the situation than his opponent when he earned two breaks in the first and third games to go 3-0 up before his serve was broken. The opponents broke each other in the next two games before Kuzmanov held his serve and earned a break in the next game to restore parity at four. However, he lost his serve again while Couacaud held him to win the first set.

Couacaud all but had sealed the match while leading 5-3 in the second set. Kuzmanov not only saved two match points but came back into the match roaring by winning four games on a trot, including breaks in the 10th where Couacaud double-faulted twice and the 12th game.

Couacaud’s trouble with serve was clearly visible during the end of the second set and continued in the decider as he made two more double faults in the fourth game as Kuzmanov took a decisive 4-1 lead after holding his serve in the next. Couacaud won the next two games to reduce the margin. However, Kuzmanov played some exquisite low angled shots that had the crowd in roars and broke Couacaud’s serve in the eighth game before serving out for a place in the final.

Earlier, in the first semi-final encounter, Vukic looked in top form as did Gojo as the rivals kept up a fast-paced game. The only thing that separated them was the consistency in the serves, which Vukic did with aplomb while dishing out 11 aces without a single double fault.

After both had held their serves, Vukic came close to breaking Gojo’s serve in the fifth game when he was up 40-15, thanks to two doubles faults by Gojo, who committed a total of eight in the match. Without any break by either of the players, the set went into a tie-breaker, where Gojo succumbed 5-7 even after holding a 5-3 lead. In the second set, a break in the fourth game was all Vukic needed to eventually close out the set and match.

India’s Chandni goes down to Korean in WBO Asia-Pacific title bout

Indian pugilist Chandni Mehra went down to Korean Bo Mi Re Shin by a TKO in the 8th round in the WBO Asia-Pacific women’s title fight at Gangwan-do, Korea, on Saturday.

The 20-year-old boxer from Yamuna Nagar, Haryana, took the home favorite and much more fancied 27-year-old Bo Mi Re Shin until the 8th round before the referee stopped the contest.

Chandni, who had suffered the first-ever knockdown of her career in this fight in the 8th round, informed the Indian Boxing Council, which has been handling domestic affairs for Indian professional boxers in collaboration with the World Boxing Council. The IBC has been set up to offer a “pathway for domestic championship success for aspiring professional boxers throughout the region and afford Indian fighters more significant global opportunities, using the WBC India as a platform for development, progression, and inclusion”.

Both Chandni and Bo Mi Re Shin started the fight aggressively with the intent to lay down a marker in the early rounds. This was the first time that Chandni Mehra was fighting in a 10-round fight. It was always an uphill task considering that the Korean had already had fought three 10-rounder bouts before this fight.

The Korean was faster with a wider repertoire of combinations that she could throw. She led with a left hook and followed that up with solid right hooks which almost every time pierced through Chandni’s defenses.

The Indian boxer gave a good account of herself in the first six rounds by countering punch-for-punch while standing and delivering blows after blows.

In the 5th round, Chandni looked to have fallen upon a clear game plan to stay on the outside and work on counters. She had some success in the 5th round but, it was quickly negated by the Korean who increased her work rate and target body shots.

Chandni had started tiring after the 6th round and Shi Bo quickly attempted to capitalize with body shots that were causing a lot of damage to Chandni.

Early in the 8th round, the Korean came out all guns blazing. A Left hook followed by a right hook caught Chandni very hard on her chin. Shin Bo followed that with a few more hooks. Chandni dropped to the canvas. This was her first-ever knockdown in her 11 fight pro career.

She was tired and had taken a lot of punishment in the 7th and 8th rounds. A few more seconds into the round, the WBO-appointed referee called an end to the fight and declared the fight in favor of the Korean.

With this loss, Chandni now has a record of eight wins and three defeats in her 11 fight Pro career.
