Huawei patents smartphone with all screen fingerprint unlock tech

0

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has reportedly filed a patent for smartphones with all-screen fingerprint unlock technology.

In addition, the firm disclosed that the new fullscreen fingerprint technology will allow the users to respond to text messages without the need to unlock the phone.

The users will still have the option to “activate sensors in a chosen area on the screen while deactivating the rest on the screen space.”

The company confirmed it has filed a patent for the new technology in six markets including China, Europe, the US, Japan, Korea as well as India and is awaiting approval, reports Android Authority.

In the patent, the company has outlined a few potential applications for the technology, such as fingerprint verification for individual applications, through their icons.

Huawei recently filed a patent for smartphones with an under-display selfie camera.

The Chinese tech giant filed two patents back in 2019 that has finally been published by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office).

The patents also revealed that the phone will not have volume buttons, just like the Mate 30 Pro. Users will have to use a virtual slider to control the volume.

The front of the devices is shown to be bezel-less and with no notches of any kind to hold a selfie camera, while there is no visible mechanism for a pop-up camera.

Kohli & Anushka’s ‘take a break’ session leaves fans in splits

0

India skipper Virat Kohli and his actress wife Anushka Sharma on Wednesday shared a video on their social media handles in which the duo got involved in a hilarious ‘#TakeABreak’ session.

Kohli’s Instagram post read: “#TakeABreak Find out who knows who better in this fun and interactive #TakeABreak session with us. Hope you guys enjoy it and figure out who the winner is because I couldn’t.”

Anushka started off by asking Kohli things about Bollywood and then Kohli asked Anushka questions regarding cricket.

Anushka’s first question was: “What was the name of the first Hindi feature film?” To this, Kohli hilariously answered: “Mera Aangan”. The duo burst out laughing and then Anushka let him know the right answer which was: “Raja Harishchandra”.

Anushka then asked: “Name two movies based on cricket.” Kohli was having none of it this time and straightaway answered: “Patiala House and Lagaan”.

It was Kohli’s turn to ask questions now and he started with: “Name three basic rules of cricket.”

To this, Anushka replied: “Don’t get out” which prompted Kohli to say: “That’s not a rule, it’s a wish.”

Anushka then started giving answers seriously and she said: “Only two fielders are allowed outside the circle in the powerplay. You cannot bowl from outside the crease. The third one is that when you hit the ball over the boundary it’s a six and if it touches the ground it’s a four.”

In the end, the duo couldn’t decide who won the challenge and settled for a draw.

Karan Wahi: Was sceptical to shoot amid pandemic

Actor Karan Wahi, who is currently busy shooting for Khatron Ke Khiladi: Made In India, was initially skeptical to go outdoors and resume work, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I was skeptical. I mean it was not easy stepping out knowing that your health is at risk. I signed my contract just one day before the shoot. I first made sure that proper safety precautions are being followed on the sets. Personally, I was very scared. So, I had a detailed discussion with the team,” Karan told IANS.

“The production team was very cooperative, and I do trust the channel. So, I said yes and eventually I have to work. I haven’t been doing anything for so many months, so I feel it’s okay to shoot for the show to make me mentally, emotionally, and physically sane,” he said.

“Khatron Ke Khiladi: Made In India” also features Harsh Limbachiyaa, Nia Sharma, Jasmine Bhasin, Aly Goni, and Jay Bhanushali.

Donald will trump, predicts Kerala numerologist

0

Donald Trump may be trailing his Democrat rival Joe Biden in US polls in the run-up to the presidential poll, but a 68-year-old Kerala numerologist is ready to place his bet on Trump’s re-election as the US President in November for the second term.

MK Damodaran, a retired Kerala government employee, said his numerological calculations and analysis based on ‘fate and occult numbers’ and Trump’s date of birth, etc had made him predict Trump’s victory.

“November 3, 2020, is the day of the US presidential election, which is strongly lucky for incumbent President Trump. His date of birth is June 14, 1946. As such, his birth number is 5 (1 + 4). Besides, he was born in the sun sign Gemini that is ruled by planet Mercury. Number 5 is represented by planet Mercury,” Damodaran told IANS.

He further said that the coming election is the 59th such held after every four years.

“The number 59 again represents 5 (5+9=14, 1+4=5). The US got independence on July 4, 1776. The fate number of that day is also 5. (7 + 4 + 1 + 7 + 7 + 6=32, 3+2=5). The number 5 plays a key role for Trump.”

Analyzing further, Damodaran said that “the ‘fate number’ of Trump is 4 (6+1+4+1+9+4+6=31, 3+1=4). The year 2020 also represents number 4 (2+0+2+0=4). The so year 2020 is lucky for Trump”.

Damodaran said Trump’s ‘occult number’ is 48, which adds up to 3. “Since the election will be held on November 3, it augurs well for Trump,” the numerologist said.

He said that he had used such calculations to successfully make predictions about cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar, India’s victory at the 2011 World Cup, etc. In 2012, he said, he had predicted that the US will top the medal tally in the London Olympics. The prediction was based on the lucky numbers of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.

Damodaran said that an analysis of Biden’s numbers indicated that his chances to get elected as the US President are “very remote”.

Vaping linked to higher Covid-19 risk in young adults: Study

0

A US study led by Indian-origin researcher has found that teenagers and young adults who used e-cigarettes (vaping) were more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19.

The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, examined connections between youth vaping and Covid-19 using US population-based data collected during the pandemic.

Among young people who were tested for the virus that causes Covid-19, the research found that those who vaped were five to seven times more likely to be infected than those who did not use e-cigarettes.

“Young people may believe their age protects them from contracting the virus or that they will not experience symptoms of Covid-19, but the data show this isn’t true among those who vape,” said the study lead author, postdoctoral scholar Shivani Mathur Gaiha from Stanford University in the US.

According to the study, surveys were completed by 4,351 participants aged 13 to 24.

The researchers recruited a sample of participants that was evenly divided between those who had used e-cigarettes and those who had never used nicotine products.

The sample also included approximately equal numbers of people in different age groups (adolescent, young adult, and adult), races and genders.

Participants answered questions about whether they had ever used vaping devices or combustible cigarettes, as well as whether they had vaped or smoked in the past 30 days.

They were asked if they had experienced Covid-19 symptoms, received a test for Covid-19, or received a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 after being tested.

The findings showed that young people who had used both cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the previous 30 days were almost five times as likely to experience Covid-19 symptoms, such as coughing, fever, tiredness, and difficulty breathing as those who never smoked or vaped.

Depending on which nicotine products they used and how recently they had used them, young people who vaped or smoked, or both, were 2.6 to nine times more likely to receive Covid-19 tests than nonusers.

Among the participants who were tested for Covid-19, those who had ever used e-cigarettes were five times more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19 than nonusers.

Those who had used both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes in the previous 30 days were 6.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease.

“This study tells us pretty clearly that youth who are using vapes or are dual-using (e-cigarettes and cigarettes) are at elevated risk, and it’s not just a small increase in risk; it’s a big one,” Gaiha said.

In July, another study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, revealed that young people who smoke and vape have an increased chance of becoming seriously ill from the Covid-19 virus.

2 light combat choppers made by HAL deployed in Ladakh

0

Amid border tension with China in Eastern Ladakh, two Light Combat Helicopters developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have been deployed for operations at high altitude in Leh to support Indian Air Force missions.

R. Madhavan, CMD, HAL, on Wednesday said: “It is the lightest attack helicopter in the world, designed and developed by HAL to meet the specific and unique requirements of the Indian Armed Forces, reflecting the crucial role of HAL in Atma Nirbhar Bharat.”

The Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Harjit Singh Arora took part in one such operation along with HAL test pilot, Wg Cdr (Retd), Subash P. John recently by taking-off from high altitude location to a forward area for a simulated attack on a high altitude target.

This was followed by a landing at one of the most treacherous helipads in the region. The Light Combat Helicopters successfully demonstrated its quick deployment prowess to forward locations in extreme temperatures.

Light Combat Helicopters is a potent weapon platform because of its state-of-the-art systems and highly accurate weapons that are capable of hitting any type of target by day or night.

The other features of Light Combat Helicopters include its ability to operate in the complete ‘Area of Responsibility’ (AOR) and altitudes. It has the capability to carry adequate weapon load at high altitudes under varied conditions. All these characteristics make it most suitable for hot and high altitude operations.

The IAF and the Indian Army together need around 160 Light Combat Helicopters. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had approved the proposal for an initial batch of 15 Light Combat Helicopters. The IAF had issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for 15 Limited Series Production (LSP) helicopters (10 for IAF and 5 for Army) and HAL had submitted its response.

Technical evaluation and the price negotiations have been concluded and HAL expects to deliver shortly. As a proactive measure, HAL had already launched the production of Limited Series Production in anticipation of the orders at its Bengaluru facility.

Double-centurion Kent batsman dropped for taking selfie with fans

Kent batsman Jordan Cox has been excluded from the clubs next Bob Willis Trophy match against Middlesex starting on Saturday following a breach of the team’s COVID-19 protocols.

Cox breached the established bio-secure and social distancing norms by agreeing to a request for a photograph to be taken with young fans after the team’s recent win over Sussex.

“I am very sorry that this has happened,” Cox was quoted as saying by the club’s official website. “I fully understand the consequences, and I want to apologize to everyone.

“I’m gutted to be missing the next match and feel like I have let the team down,” he added.

He will now commence a period of self-isolation and will have to test negative before he is able to re-join the squad.

Paul Downton, Kent’s director of cricket, said: “It is unfortunate for Jordan that on the back of outstanding performance, our team medical protocols were breached.

“We take these protocols very seriously and Jordan has no choice but to go into self-isolation,” he added.

Against Sussex, the 19-year-old had broken multiple records on his way to an unbeaten 238 in his team’s victory. Cox hit 47 fours and three sixes in his 570-ball stay. He went on to notch Kent’s highest individual innings against Sussex, beating Neil Taylor’s 203* set at Hove in 1991 and then became the county’s highest maiden century-maker, beating the 57-year-old record of 211 made by David Nicholls against Derbyshire at Folkestone in 1963.

60,963 new corona cases take India tally across 23L

0

India’s novel Coronavirus tally crossed the 23-lakh mark on Wednesday with the detection of 60,963 new cases in the last 24 hours, while 834 more fatalities took the death toll to 46,091, the Health Ministry said.

Out of the total 2,329,638 cases, recoveries surged to 1,639,599 as a record 56,110 more patients recovered during the period. The recovery rate is nearly 70 percent now. The active cases in the country currently total 6,43,948.

Notably, the fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die of the disease among individuals diagnosed, has dropped to about two percent, the Ministry said.

The country had touched the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and added more than 3,00,000 cases in less than five days. The silver lining, however, is that the gap between recoveries and active cases is growing every day. Currently, recoveries are 10 lakh more than the active cases.

As many as 7,33,449 samples were tested on Tuesday, taking the total to 2,60,15,297 samples to date, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total of 5,24,513 cases and 18,050 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 302,815 cases and 5041 deaths. The southern state is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Chief Ministers and representatives of 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh for a review meeting.

He mentioned that almost 80 percent of the active cases are from the participating 10 states, and if the virus is defeated in these states, the entire country will emerge victorious in the battle against COVID-19.

Microsoft fixes 120 vulnerabilities, including 2 zero-day bugs

0

Microsoft has fixed 120 vulnerabilities with its new security patch, including two zero-day bugs in Windows operating system and Internet Explorer that were being exploited by the hackers.

Microsoft has released an August 2020 security update that has patched 120 vulnerabilities across 13 different products, from Edge to Windows, and from SQL Server to the .NET Framework.

Among the vulnerabilities fixed this month, 17 bugs received the highest severity rating of “Critical,” and there are also two zero-days, ZDNet reported on Tuesday.

The first zero-day bug known as CVE-2020-1464 was fixed as part of the new security update.

Microsoft said that an attacker can exploit this bug and have Windows incorrectly validate file signatures.

The second zero-day, tracked as CVE-2020-1380, resided in the scripting engine that ships with Internet Explorer.

Microsoft received a report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky that hackers found a remote code execution (RCE) bug in the internet explorer scripting engine and “were abusing it in real-world attacks”.

The bug, now fixed, can be exploited by luring users on malicious sites, or by sending them booby-trapped Office files.

Manushi Chhillar: Likes and shares in virtual world add to pressure

Actress and former beauty queen Manushi Chhillar, on the occasion of International Youth Day on Wednesday, said that youth should feel free to be themselves, but also warned against online toxicity.

“We, the youth of our country, are riding on the technology wave and while there are massive advantages, there are disadvantages too. We are dealing with severe online toxicity and hate that one shouldn’t face growing up. Rather the youth should feel free to be themselves, discover their identities, make mistakes and learn from them,” Manushi said.

She added: “I pray we are super strong to take on this much negativity that’s thrown at all of us on a daily basis and are able to distinguish between what matters and what doesn’t.”

Manushi wants the youth to always know that these things don’t really matter.

“Likes and shares and comments in the virtual world are definitely adding up to the pressure and I would want the youth to always know that these things don’t really matter. It’s not real despite being quantifiable. What matters is who we are, what our core values are, how we treat others and how responsible we are towards our family, friends, environment and country,” she said.

Manushi is 23, and she feels living through the Covid pandemic has definitely set new priorities for the youth, including her.

“Youth and children are also growing up in an environment where they are living through a pandemic today and that’s bound to impact the way we envision the future. I hope it doesn’t unnerve the youth to explore and express. Youth should not be shy to innovate and to lead life fearlessly as we are the explorers of our future,” she says.

Manushi welcomes the conversation that the youth are maturing faster in an age of technology.

“All the innovations and all the predicaments that we have seen in such a quick time will definitely have an impact. I hope it only forms a part of the youth’s evolution process and doesn’t disillusion them from having experiences. Youth is meant to live without fear, live free, and always feel that they can chase the sun,” she said.

Manushi shared that on International Youth Day, she wishes that the youth of the country don’t succumb to these external pressures and continue to dream.

She said: “These minds will shape up the future of this world and I’m most excited to see what they create for themselves and other generations.”

Manushi is all set to make her Bollywood debut opposite superstar Akshay Kumar in the upcoming film “Prithviraj”. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, “Prithviraj” is based on the life of King Prithviraj Chauhan. It stars Akshay as Prithviraj, while Manushi will play the role of the Sanyogita, the love of his life.

3 dead in B’luru, 110 arrested for rioting over FB post (5th Lead)

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the city while curfew was clamped in the D.J. Halli and K.G. Halli police station limits. On Tuesday, the two police stations were targets of violence.

City Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said that 110 rioters have been arrested in connection with the violence. He also tweeted that the nephew of local MLA, accused of circulating an offensive Facebook post, has been arrested.

Twitter testing automatic translation for tweets

0

Twitter has kicked off a test with a small group of users across iOS and Android in Brazil that automatically translates tweets that are in a language they may not be able to read.

“To make it easier to understand the conversations you follow on Twitter, we’re experiencing an automatic translation for Tweets in other languages that appear on your homepage,” the company said in a statement.

The translation is already a feature of Twitter, but it’s not automatic. The platform currently supports inline translations, so users can click on any tweet written in a different language to translate it.

If the primary language of the user is set to English within Twitter, all other Tweets in different languages will have a Translate button.

However, with the new feature, users in Brazil will see English-language tweets that have been automatically translated to Brazilian Portuguese, rather than having to manually opt to translate it themselves.

Twitter is also working on a new feature where the users will be able to view retweets with quotes (formerly known as retweets with comments) on each of their posts.

The ‘quote retweets’ will now appear as “Quotes” under tweets, with their own counter, similar to how the number of retweets and likes are displayed.

Lucknow records highest spike of 831 Covid cases in a day

0

Lucknow has recorded an all-time high of 831 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, as it crossed the 14,000 marks. Medical experts have said that if immediate steps are not taken the state capital may soon cross the 1,000-mark in a day.

Tuesday’s figure took the caseload to 14,221 since the outbreak on March 11, of which 42 percent (6,043 cases) have been reported to date in August.

About 7,317 patients have also recovered to date, but since the transmission rate is higher than recovery, active patients have swelled to 6,743. Though asymptomatic cases are allowed home isolation, the increase in active cases added to the pressure on COVID hospitals.

Prof T.N. Dhole, senior virologist, and ex-professor at SGPGI said moisture in the atmosphere in monsoon is abetting the spread of the virus.

“The surge will continue and we may see more than 1,000 cases daily by August end. The transmission rate would peak in October,” he explained.

Experts cited three main reasons behind the spike — rainy season, negligence of safety protocol, and delay in contact tracing.

However, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Rajendra Prasad Singh denied laxity in contact tracing. “More cases are being detected because we have doubled our testing capacity to 5,000 daily which is double in comparison to July,” he said.

King George’s Medical Unit, medicine head and in charge of COVID unit, Prof Virendra Adam said, “I see people across the city crowding markets without social distancing and masks. Hand hygiene is also being neglected which explains the spread of the virus.”

He’s off Christmas card & present list: Broad on his father who penalised him

0

Veteran England pacer Stuart Broad, who has been fined by his father and match referee Chris Broad for breaching ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test against Pakistan, has come up with a hilarious reaction.

Cricket fans’ group England’s Barmy Army on Tuesday took to Twitter and wrote,” Stuart Broad fined and given a demerit point by his dad, match referee Chris Broad! Looks like we might need to change the words to his song slightly.”

To this, the 34-year-old fast bowler replied: “He’s (father) of the Chrismas card and present list.”

Broad has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for using inappropriate language against Yasir Shah during the first Test at Manchester which England won by three wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The incident occurred in the 46th over of Pakistan’s second innings of the match when Broad used inappropriate language after dismissing Shah, stated an ICC media release.

In addition to the fine, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Broad, for whom it was the third offense in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to three. Broad’s previous breaches were on January 27 this year during the fourth Test against South Africa at the Wanderers, and on August 19, 2018, in the third Test against India at Trent Bridge.

All 6 COVID-19 positive hockey players shifted to hospital: SAI

0

All six Indian men’s hockey team players, who have tested positive for coronavirus, have been shifted to a multispeciality hospital in Bengaluru, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) informed on Wednesday morning.

Earlier, striker Mandeep Singh was hospitalized late on Monday night, owing to a dip in his oxygen level.

SAI has now said that as a precautionary measure, they shifted captain Manpreet Singh, Jaskaran Singh, Surender Kumar, Varun Kumar, and Krishnan B Pathak to SS Sparsh multi-specialty hospital — where Mandeep is already hospitalized — on Tuesday afternoon.

“The decision to hospitalize them was taken so as to ensure that the players were attended to at all times and could be given the best possible treatment,” said SAI.

All six athletes are in good health and recovering well, it added.

The players had been diagnosed with COVID-19 following their arrival at the SAI’s National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) for the hockey national camp which began on August 4.

“I am self quarantined on the SAI campus and I am very happy with the way SAI authorities have handled the situation,” Manpreet had earlier said. “I am very happy that they made the testing of athletes mandatory. That proactive step helped in identifying the problem right in time. I am doing fine and hope to recover very soon.”

External auditors to evaluate our content review process: Facebook

0

Facebook has said it will go through an independent third-party audit to validate the numbers and metrics it publishes in its Community Standards Enforcement Report.

The company is issuing a Request For Proposal (RFP) to external auditors to conduct an independent audit of these metrics.

“We hope to conduct this audit starting in 2021 and have the auditors publish their assessments once completed,” said Vishwanath Sarang, Technical Programme Manager, Integrity.

Facebook said it has been working with auditors internally to assess how the metrics it reports can be audited most effectively.

“Transparency is only helpful if the information we share is useful and accurate. In the context of the Community Standards Enforcement Report, that means the metrics we report are based on sound methodology and accurately reflect what’s happening on our platform,” Sarang said in a blog post on Tuesday.

“We want people to be confident that the numbers we report around harmful content are accurate, so we will undergo an independent, third-party audit, starting in 2021, to validate the numbers we publish in our Community Standards Enforcement Report,” added Guy Rosen, VP Integrity at Facebook.

Over a year ago, Facebook worked with international experts in measurement, statistics, law, economics and governance to provide an independent, public assessment of whether the metrics it shares in the enforcement report provide accurate and useful measures of Facebook’s content moderation challenges.

“They broadly agreed that we are looking at the right metrics and provided some recommendations for improvement including launching appeals reporting,” Sarang said.
