Neuralink brain chip to allow people to hear sounds impossible to humans

0

Tesla and SpaceX founder, Elon Musk has claimed that his new pet project Neuralink chip will allow users to hear sounds that previously were impossible to human ears.

Musk founded Neuralink in 2016 but has only held one major public presentation. However, more details about Neuralink will be presented at an event on August 28, reports independent.co.uk.

The main aim of the project is to provide a direct connection between a brain and a computer to overcome the power of artificial intelligence (AI), using a “sewing machine-like” device to stitch threads to an implanted brain chip.

Musk recently said that Neuralink’s brain chip technology would allow people to stream music into their brains effortlessly.

Musk confirmed the feature last month over an exchange with a Twitter user who asked: “If we implement Neuralink – can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature.”

Musk replied with a simple, “yes”.

He has also confirmed that the chip would be able to control hormone levels, which would have the potential to help with anxiety relief, among other things.

Musk has often criticized the over-reliance on AI and the potential danger it poses. He recently claimed that AI will be ‘vastly smarter’ than any human and would overtake us by 2025.

He has expressed that he is inspired by the way forward Ramandeep Singh has dealt with injuries in his international career.

“It was really disappointing to miss out on the Six-Nation Championship in Spain last year. However, I have realized that injuries will be a part and parcel of any sportsperson’s career. I look up to the way Ramandeep Singh has dealt with injuries in his career,” Arshdeep said.

“He is an inspiration for all young hockey players in India. One needs a lot of determination to come back from injuries and now I know how important it is to ensure that I keep checking on how my body is reacting in every situation,” he added.

Arshdeep, who has attended several junior national camps, expressed that he has been focussing on his fitness in the last few months.

“The last few months have been a huge challenge for all of us, however, I have taken the time to focus on my fitness. I know I am close to receiving an opportunity to play for the Indian junior men’s team in the near future and I don’t want to miss the chance due to an injury.

“I have been practicing yoga to become mentally stronger as well. I have to be absolutely ready to grab my opportunities whenever they are presented to me,” said the 19-year-old.

Petrol, diesel prices unchanged on Monday

0

After hefty Rs 8.38 per liter cut in diesel price in the national capital on Friday, the oil marketing companies have gone on a pause mode keeping auto fuel prices unchanged on Monday, the third successive day when auto fuel prices have not been revised.

Accordingly, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 73.56 a liter in Delhi while the petrol price remains static at Rs 80.43 a liter.

Across metros, petrol and diesel prices are keeping steady for the past seven days as pump prices of auto fuels have not been changed since then.

On Friday, diesel prices were cut by a sharp Rs 8.38 a liter following Delhi government’s decision to reduce VAT on the product from 30 percent to 16.75 percent.

The price cut has again made diesel cheaper than petrol in the city after more than a month. In fact, diesel is cheaper than petrol in Delhi by the widest margin among all metros now.

Delhi was the only major city in the country where diesel prices were higher than petrol. Diesel prices first rose above petrol in Delhi last month, much to the discomfort of the transport sector and the fuel dealers.

The Rs 1.5 a liter difference in prices had led the substantial loss of business to pump operators in Delhi as vehicles were getting diesel filled in neighboring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The institute had submitted an application seeking permission for conducting the trial in July last week.

The vaccine candidate is in the midst of Phase II and III clinical trials in the UK, Phase III trials in Brazil, and Phase I and II clinical trials in South Africa.

Rail museum in north Karnataka showcases heritage, artefacts

0

The newly set up rail museum in north Karnataka’s Hubballi showcases heritage and artifacts of the Indian Railways that takes visitors down its memory lane.

“The new museum, to open for public from Wednesday, will enthrall visitors with its rich heritage and priceless artifacts dating back to over a century when coal-fired steam engines chugged trains across the country,” an official told IANS here.

Hubballi is about 400km northwest of Bengaluru in the southern state and where the South Western Railway (SWR) zone is headquartered.

Located in idyllic settings near the railway station on Gadag road, the museum displays the evolution of advanced systems in railway operations in two cottages named after Ghataprabha and Malaprabha tributaries of the Mahadayi river in the state’s northwest region and an outdoor section.

“The museum preserves and portrays various facets of the railways’ working, including vintage rolling stock (engines), theatre coach, toy train, ticket printing machine, model train run, memorabilia shop and cafeteria,” said the official.

Under a grand arch of a bygone era, the museum has emblems of the zonal railway’s forerunner – Southern Mahratta Railways in the erstwhile Bombay Province.

“In the outdoor landscape, two narrow gauge steam engines are a prime attraction and a slew of exhibits on a track such as a coach, wagon, and tanker.

Old materials like rails, sleepers, level crossing gate, and analog signals are displayed in the galleries amidst greenery.

A narrow-gauge coach depicting unity in diversity with life-size statues of passengers from across the country is a special attraction for visitors.

The twin cottages, built-in 1907, and made part of the museum reminds of the old-age charm with indoor artifacts.

The Ghataprabha cottage features a model room with a running train and old signal instruments.

History of locomotives, wagons, and coaches is presented along with antique books and plants. It also gives glimpses of railways’ working on medical and security fronts.

A memorabilia counter where souvenirs can be bought and a history corner on old railway companies are also in the same cottage.

The Malaprabha cottage has a series of charcoal sketches in an art gallery at its entrance. An old booking office with a ticket counter, printed tickets, and iron cash chests reflect reminiscences of the ticketing era.

A station master room is simulated with a panel, apparatus, registers, furniture, and life-size statues of a station master and a points-man.

The adjacent room is designed on the theme of a waiting room with antique furniture. A parcel office has been recreated with a 150-year-old parcel weighing machine.

In view of the pandemic, only 30 visitors will be allowed inside the museum at a time to maintain social distancing. They have to wear masks and enter the place after washing hands with sanitizer dispensers at the entrance.

The museum will be opened to the public from August 5-9 with free entry from 4-7 p.m. It will be open from August 11 between 12 noon and 7 p.m. on working days (Tuesday to Friday) and between 12 noon and 8 p.m. on weekends and public holidays, with a holiday on Monday. The entry fee is Rs 20 for adults and Rs 10 for children of 5-12 years of age.

Twitter survey reveals paid service with ‘Undo Send’ button

0

Twitter has kicked off a new survey for its upcoming paid subscription service that will give users options like the “Undo Send” button (like an edit button) and the ability to tweet longer and high-quality videos, among other features.

The micro-blogging platform hinted last month it is planning a paid subscription platform that can be reused by other teams in the future. Twitter is building a subscription platform with a team codenamed “Gryphon”.

According to TechCrunch, the company has started the survey towards the service that would give users paid features like “support for profile badges, auto-responses, additional social listening analytics and the ability to run brand surveys about ads”.

The ‘Undo Send’ will provide a 30-second window for users to recall or withdraw a tweet with typos and other errors before anyone can see it.

This will, however, be only a viable alternative to the ‘Edit’ button users have been demanding for years.

The paid users will be able to choose more fonts and theme colors for background, links, mentions, hashtags, and icons.

The paid users will be able to publish videos up to 5 times longer than the current default setting for videos, with a much higher maximum resolution (8192×8192), according to the report.

They will also get a badge on their profiles that link to businesses they own or work for.

The paid users will also be able to write and set a menu of auto-responses to use in replies.

Other features include the ability to survey people about the ads the users run on the platform.

Twitter last month revealed its plan for a paid subscription service via a job listing that seeks a full-stack senior software engineer in New York to join “Gryphon”.

In its shareholder letter after the Q2 results, Twitter said: “We are also in the early stages of exploring additional potential revenue product opportunities to compliment our advertising business.

“These may include subscriptions and other approaches, and although our exploration is very early and we do not expect any revenue attributable to these opportunities in 2020”.

Nasa SpaceX crew return: Dragon capsule splashes down

0

Nasa astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken have returned to Earth after a two-month stay on the space station.

The crew’s SpaceX Dragon Capsule splashed down just south of Pensacola on Florida’s Gulf coast, the BBC reported.

The successful end to the crew’s mission initiates a new era for the American space agency.

All its human transport needs just above the Earth will in future be purchased from private companies, such as SpaceX.

The government agency says contacting out to service providers in this way will save it billions of dollars that can be diverted to getting astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

Hurley’s and Behnken’s capsule touched the water shortly after 14.45 EDT (19.45 BST; 18.45 GMT).

The sight of the vehicle’s four main parachutes floating down over the Gulf of Mexico was confirmation the spacecraft had survived its fiery descent through the atmosphere.

Recovery vessels are now working to make the capsule safe and lift it out of the water. The astronauts will then be able to get out.

The men will be checked over by medical staff before being flown to shore by helicopter.

The astronauts’ Dragon capsule launched to the space station at the end of May on a Falcon 9 rocket, also supplied by SpaceX.

Their mission served as an end-to-end demonstration of the astronaut “taxi service” the company, owned by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, will be selling to Nasa from now on.

The Boeing corporation is also developing a crew capsule solution but has had to delay its introduction after encountering software problems on its Starliner capsule.

Manushi Chhillar: Raksha Bandhan always an inclusive occasion in my family

Actress and former beauty queen Manushi Chhillar shared that, for her, the festival of Raksha Bandhan has always stood for gender parity and equality.

According to Manushi, her parents Mitra Basu and Neelam taught the three siblings — Dewangana, Dalmitra, and Manushi — that protecting each other and standing by each other is most important.

“In my family, my parents have always instilled a sense of parity, a sense of equality in everything we do, or celebrate. So, even when we have celebrated Raksha Bandhan, it has been a very inclusive occasion for us,” Manushi said.

She added: “Dewangana, Dalmitra, and I have always celebrated it as a day to appreciate the bond we share as siblings and promise that we’ll always be there for each other. We’re best friends!”

Manushi says that her brother Dalmitra is hugely progressive in his thinking because of her parents.

“My brother, being the youngest, has himself been vocal about the fact that he needs his sisters as much as we need him. That’s the bond we share,” she said.

Manushi, who won the Miss World crown in 2017, added: “This ethos has come from our parents and how we have seen them being equaled at everything. They have been our role models because of their principles, morals, philosophies, and the way they have led and maintained their relationship.”

She thanks her for molding them as “independent, inclusive, and for grounding us with the right values”.

WhatsApp introduces new limit on animated stickers

0

In a bid to curb irresponsible use of animated stickers, WhatsApp has introduced a new limit on sharing these stickers, according to WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp beta.

The limit is not yet uniform for Android and iOS platforms, although the general rule is 1MB per sticker, WABetaInfo that closely tracks WhatsApp in Beta tweeted on Saturday.

WhatsApp introduced stickers a couple of years ago, but the Facebook-owned instant messaging platform officially announced the rollout of animated stickers barely a month ago.

“Stickers are one of the fastest-growing ways people communicate on WhatsApp, with billions sent every day. We are rolling out new animated sticker packs that are even more fun and expressive,” WhatsApp said in a blog post on July 1 while announcing a slew of features, including animated stickers.

“Note that the possibility to import custom stickers is not available yet officially,” WABetaInfo said in another tweet on Saturday.

Stickers are available in the latest versions of WhatsApp. If you do not see stickers, make sure to update to the latest version of WhatsApp on your phone’s application store.

MP Minister takes matters in own hands, cleans women’s toilet

0

Infuriated over the condition of an office toilet used by women employees in a state government office building here, Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar decided to set an example in public hygiene — or perhaps put officials concerned to shame — and proceeded to clean it.

Tomar had gone to Moti Mahal building on Friday to discuss some issues with the Divisional Commissioner. While returning, some women employees complained to Tomar that the toilet reserved for them in the office building was not cleaned regularly and they were thus inconvenienced.

On hearing the complaint, Tomar inspected the toilets on the premises and found them dirty. He ordered the officials to bring toilet cleaner and brush etc and proceeded to clean these himself.

Tomar also urged the employees to take responsibility for keeping toilets in government offices clean. The officers too should constantly monitor and regularly get the toilets cleaned, he added.

The Minister also asked Revenue Department Joint Commissioner RP Bharti to take special care of public conveniences made available to women staff in government offices and take punitive action against those responsible for dirty toilets on the premises.

It is not the first time that Tomar has come forward to clean up the mess. Earlier, he had cleaned a stormwater drain with a shovel and swept a public park with a broom.

Kohli shares inspirational message with fans on social media

0

India skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday shared a profound message with his fans and followers on Instagram.

Kohli shared a black and white photograph of himself and captioned it: “If you are true to yourself, you won’t fear anything.”

International cricket recently returned after the COVID-19 hiatus with the three-match Test series between England and West Indies, which the Three Lions won 2-1. Pakistan will next take on England in a series involving three Tests and as many T20Is starting August 5. Meanwhile, Ireland is currently locking horns against England in a three-match ODI series.

As for Indian cricketers, their first assignment post-COVID-19 stoppage is set to be the Indian Premier League, which will be held in the UAE starting September 19.

Kohli will once again take charge of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as they will look to end their trophy drought this term.

“They (RCB) will have a big chance to take out an IPL. They have always had good stock on paper but they have never been able to go out and get the job done,” Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg had recently said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.

“Now, with the inclusion of (Aaron) Finch at the top, he will be able to dominate the powerplay overs…get some quick runs and relieve the pressure off AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli in the middle-order.

“Also, their bowling attack looks strong with Dale Steyn and Kane Richardson, and they have a better team balance as compared to the last couple of years. They will have a better strategy going into the tournament,” he added.
