Railway Board Chairman, Niti Aayog VC inspect DFC work

0

As the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) is striving to complete the ambitious freight corridor project by the end of 2022, Railway Board Chairman V.K. Yadav and Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar inspected the new track construction work on the Khurja-Dadri section of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) on Wednesday.

Accompanied by DFCCIL Managing Director Anurag Sachan, they visited the new track construction machine working site at Wair detour near Khurja in UP.

The Khurja-Dadri section will link the Eastern and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Heavy and long haul freight trains can run at 100 mph on the section, ensuring seamless and fast logistics movement.

The DFCCIL is using new track construction machines for laying the track across the EDFC and the WDFC. The machine can lay 1.5 km track a day, ensuring all safety, precision, and reliability.

According to the DFCCIL officials, seven new track construction machines are being deployed along the DFC alignment with four in the EDFC and three in the WDFC.

The Railway Board Chairman appreciated the work of the DFC collective and contractors and expressed confidence at the DFCCIL achieving the deadlines.

Officials said Kumar also appreciated the DFCCIL. He was impressed by the speedy implementation of the project that will act as a crucial multiplier for the nation’s economy.

The 3,373 km DFC, a flagship project of the railways, aims to augment rail transport capacity to meet the growing requirement of movement of goods by segregating freight from passenger traffic.

The WDFC runs from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai to Tughlakabad and Dadri near Delhi and will cater largely to the container transport requirements between the existing and emerging ports in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the northern hinterland.

The 1,839 km EDFC runs from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata. It could be extended to serve the new deep-sea port, proposed in the Kolkata area, and will largely handle coal and steel traffic.

The DFCCIL plans to run freight trains at 100 mph against the current 75 kmph. It also plans to increase the average speed of the freight trains from 26 kmph to 70 kmph on the DFC.

Delhi court dismisses plea of riot accused on life threat

0

A Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed a plea filed by February riots’ accused Shahrukh Pathan regarding the threat to his life after Tihar Central Jail’s authorities told the court that he will not be shifted to the cell meant for general prisoners.

On July 25, Pathan had told the court that he wished to continue his lodging with the high-risk prisoners as there is a threat to his life and apprehended untoward incident if he was lodged with the general inmates.

The application was filed by Pathan, who was captured on camera while pointing a gun at a policeman during the violence in northeast Delhi after he was orally informed by the jail authorities that he will be transferred from high-risk prisoners’ cell to another one housing general inmates.

After jail authorities told Metropolitan Magistrate Fahad Uddin of Karkardooma court that there is no proposal to shift the accused, the court said: “Thus, in view of the reply of Deputy Superintendent, Central Jail No. 4, Tihar, no further action is required.” The court dismissed Pathan’s application moved by advocate Asghar Khan, Abdul Tahir Khan, and Tariq Nasir.

A video clip of Pathan pointing a gun at Delhi Police Head constable Deepak Dahiya had gone viral during the riots that broke out after clashes between pro- and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters took an ugly turn in Delhi’s northeast area in February.

On May 1, the Delhi Police had filed a 350-page charge sheet against Pathan, Kaleem Ahmad, and Ishtiyak Mallik in connection with the case.

Shahrukh was the first person to be arrested in the case on March 3. Kaleem, who had given shelter to him, was arrested later during the investigation.

Sonia appoints 17 city, district Congress chiefs in UP

0

Interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday appointed district and city party presidents for 17 districts in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress president has appointed heads of party units in Lucknow, Bahraich, Gonda, Gonda city, Badaun, Badaun city, Pilibhit, Kasganj, Mirzapur, Gorakhpur, Sonbhadra, Jalaun, Azamgarh, Unnao, Lakhimpur, Modinagar (Ghaziabad) and Mughalsarai (Chandauli).

In February this year, Sonia Gandhi had approved the proposal for creating new city Congress Committees in Azamgarh, Sultanpur, Robertsganj (Sonbhadra) districts in Uttar Pradesh.

In October last year, the Congress had revamped the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit, appointing party MLA Ajay Kumar Lallu as its chief and Aradhana Mishra as the leader of the legislative party.

The Congress in UP has been saddled with a non-existent organization and is fraught with infighting.

The appointment of district presidents is now being seen as an effort by the party high command to strengthen the organizational base of the party, ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress will also test the waters when it contests the panchayat elections, scheduled to be held at the end of the year.

I never wanted to give up: Lingard on his struggles

0

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has said it was a difficult season for him and he always had the belief in him that he could deliver again.

“I never wanted to give up,” Lingard posted on Instagram. “I knew who I really was on and off the pitch.

“I knew having been there before I could get there again. It meant working harder than I’d ever done before.”

“This team, this club is my family and I will continue to keep working harder than ever to help this team achieve its goals,” he added.

Lingard scored in the eighth minute of stoppage time in his side’s crucial 2-0 win over Leicester City, which sealed third place and a Champions League qualification spot on the final day.

Earlier, the England footballer who was part of their 2018 World Cup side that reached the semifinals, had compared Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to NBA legend Michael Jordan, who won several team and personal honors during his time with Chicago Bulls.

“I have to say, Cristiano Ronaldo,” Lingard told Sky Sports. “Everything he has achieved in his career. He has been at plenty of clubs and won many trophies. I believe he is a real icon of football, Michael Jordan of football.”

Sushant’s family has a very detailed case against Rhea: Lawyer

0

The lawyer representing relatives of Sushant Singh Rajput has said that the family of the late actor has prepared a very detailed case against actress Rhea Chakraborty.

“The family has worked out a very detailed case against her, how she worked on his mind, how she changed servants and bodyguards, how she siphoned money from his account, how she used his credit card etc. Rhea took him to doctors, got treatments done but never involved the family. She used to control what medicines he should take,” said Vikas Singh, lawyer of Sushant’s father Krishna Kumar Singh told Times Now, according to a report in timesnownews.com.

Sushant’s family is reportedly assuming that the 34-year-old was undergoing some kind of severe medication before his demise.

The report further states that Sushant’s family was apprehensive that their son is not in good company and had alerted Bandra Police about the same in February.

Talking further about his girlfriend Rhea, the lawyer has told Times Now: “She deliberately, over a period of time, ensured that Sushant’s father is not able to talk to him. On February 25, the family had even reported to the Bandra Police that the actor was not in good company.”

Singh has revealed during his conversation with the channel that the late actor’s family expects Rhea to be arrested at the earliest.

Earlier reports have stated how the actor at one point of time had made up his mind to quit acting and take up organic farming in Coorg. However, Rhea allegedly “left him” after hearing about his decision.

Meanwhile, as part of Mumbai Police’s investigation into Sushant’s death, Rhea’s statement was recorded at Bandra Police Station on June 18, four days after his demise.

Rhea recently took to her verified Instagram and Twitter accounts to request Home Minister Amit Shah for a CBI probe into her late boyfriend’s death.

“Respected @AmitShah sir, I’m Sushant Singh Rajputs girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, it is now over a month since his sudden demise
I have complete faith in the government, however, in the interest of justice, I request you with folded hands to initiate a CBI inquiry. I request you with folded hands to initiate a CBI inquiry into this matter. I only want to understand what pressures, prompted Sushant to take this step. Yours sincerely #satyamevajayate @AmitShah, sir,” the actress had tweeted on July 16.

B’desh reports 3,009 new Covid cases, tally 232,194

0

Bangladesh has reported 3,009 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours taking the tally to 232,194, health officials said on Wednesday.

Another 2,878 patients recovered from the disease through treatment at home and in hospital in the same period, raising the total to 130,292, DGHS Additional Director General Nasima Sultana said in a media briefing.

It puts the recovery rate at 56.11 percent while the mortality stands at 1.31 percent following the death of 30 men and five women in the last 24 hours, bdnews24 reported.

A total of 14,127 samples were tested at 82 authorized labs across the country during that time, 21.30 percent of which returned positive results, according to government data.

Globally, over 16.74 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 660,428 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

Make-up artiste Manish Karjaokar no more; Varun Dhawan, Remo Dsouza pay condolences

Renowned Bollywood make-up artiste Manish Karjaokar is no more. Actor Varun Dhawan took to Instagram Stories to confirm the news and pay his condolences.

“RIP Manish Dada. I am completely shocked. He was on the sets of ABCD 2 and Street Dancers. Always jovial and a team player. These people are the real backbones of our films. Very sad news,” Varun wrote on Wednesday.

Director-choreographer Remo Dsouza, who worked with the late make-up artist in “ABCD 2”, too took to social media to remember Karjaokar.

“R. I. P. @manish_karjaokar you will be missed my brother,” Remo wrote on Instagram along with a picture in which Manish is seen applying make-up on Remo’s face.

Dancer-actor Raghav Juyal shared a picture with Manish on Instagram and wrote: “I am broken today, In agony, it pains a lot to know that dada is no more with us.”

Covid-19 tracking app may not be good predictor: Study

0

Researchers have now indicated that tracking symptoms affiliated with the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) through an app may not be a good predictor of the spread of the disease.

Over the course of 2020, as the Covid-19 has spread across the globe causing extensive illness and economic havoc to communities everywhere, health care providers and the general public have been eager to find a way to identify the illness.

“In the absence of readily available tests, scientists have worked to identify clues to detect those who might have the illness as a way to combat the spread of the virus,” said study authors from Oxford University Press in the UK.

A recent study, published in Nature Medicine journal, suggested that a prediction score combining loss of smell and taste, fatigue, cough, and loss of appetite – collected through an app – was able to prospectively identify people at risk of Covid-19.

For the current findings, published in the journal Family Practice, the research team here compared the main features of the population involved in the Nature Medicine study, and the performance of their score, with data from a cross-sectional study conducted between March 24 and April 29, 2020, and applied the Nature Medicine model to these data.

Applying the probability threshold in the Nature Medicine study to these data indicated that 41 percent of positive tests were false positives, while 17 percent of negative tests were false negatives.

In the Family Practice study, general practitioners referred to most patients because they were complaining of COVID-like symptoms.

“Indeed, nearly half the patients in the sample reported fever (45.4 percent), reflecting the common reason for doctors to refer patients to testing at the time these data were collected,” the authors wrote.

Fever was registered in the app in the Nature Medicine study by only one-third of patients.

In conclusion, while real-time symptom collection through an app seems to be an attractive method to screen for potential infections, and the Nature Medicine study confirms the crucial value of specific symptoms such as loss of smell and taste, the score proposed in the study does not appear to perform well in a primary care population.

“These results confirm the crucial role of laboratory testing in Covid-19 and the need to support research on Covid-19 in primary care populations,” said the letter’s lead author Benoit Tudrej.

2021 Tour de France preponed to avoid clash with Tokyo Games

0

The start of next year’s Tour de France has been preponed by a week to avoid a clash with the Tokyo Olympics. The 2021 Tour will now begin on June 26 and end on July 18.

The UCI, cycling’s global governing body, made the announcement while revealing its revamped 2021 calendar.

“With the Tokyo Olympic Games being held from July 23 to Aug 8, 2021, the dates of several events have been adapted,” said UCI said in its statement.

“It is of note that to avoid overlapping of the Olympic road cycling races (July 24, 25 and 28) with the Tour de France (initially envisaged for July 2-25), the French stage race will finish on July 18, the weekend before the first weekend of the Olympics.

“As for the Vuelta Ciclista an Espana, it will be held a week earlier than its usual dates, to allow for a better transition between the Vuelta, the European Championships (announced for the weekend of 11-12 September) and the UCI Road World Championships.

“The organizers of the Amgen Tour of California (United States) and the Prudential Ride London-Surrey Classic (Great Britain) have not requested to register their event on the 2021 UCI WorldTour calendar.”

The Tour was originally scheduled to be held from July 2 to 25 while the postponed Tokyo Olympics are scheduled for July 23 start.

Mumbai slummers, women lead march to Covid herd immunity: Survey

0

In a heartening development for health authorities, a serosurvey conducted in Mumbai has indicated that slum dwellers and women are at the forefront in the march to herd immunity against coronavirus, officials said here on Wednesday.

The ‘Serological Surveillance for SARS-CoV2 Infection’ survey was done by BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation, along with NITI Aayog and TISS for 12-14 days in the first half of July covering 6,936 people.

Conducted in 3 selected BMC wards, those surveyed comprised 61 percent poor slum dwellers and the rest living in buildings or middle-class housing complexes.

The survey threw up some unexpected and startling results, showing that 57 percent of those tested in the slums was exposed to and developed antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 Virus, compared to merely 16 percent in housing complexes.

In the surveyed locations of Matunga, Sion, Wadala (F/North), Chembur and Tilak Nagar (M/West), and Dahisar and Mandapeshwar (R/North), it was also revealed that more women had developed antibodies compared to men.

For the slums, the figures thrown up were 59.30 percent women (out of 2,297 tested) and 53.20 percent men (out of 1,937 tested) had developed antibodies against COVID.

In the housing complexes, 16.80 percent of women tested and 14.90 percent of men tested had developed antibodies.

Overall, around 40.50 percent of the people surveyed in Matunga, Chembur, and Dahisar areas were exposed to Covid-19, with Matunga – adjacent to Dharavi slum – having the highest exposure rate of 57.80 percent.

The BMC interprets this high exposure in slums to shared common facilities like toilets, water-taps, high population density, and lack of physical distancing compared to the residents in housing complexes.

With the results suggesting more asymptomatic infections, this higher exposure in slums points to an extremely low death rate in Mumbai – “as low as 0.05 to 0.10 percent” – instead of the existing 5.5 percent.

“So, despite the high exposure to COVID in slums, the survey results indicate that the fatalities are not that high though there could be many factors behind this,” explained a civic official.

The BMC top brass is also startled since none of the people surveyed had taken RT-PCR tests for Covid-19, implying they were asymptomatically infected, and the numbers of such asymptomatic persons are higher than expectations.

The official explained that the presence of antibodies indicated that a person had been infected, fought off the virus, and in the process developed a certain level of resistance to the virus.

The presence of more people with antibodies in a community is considered a positive sign as the virus then has limited scope to spread, implying that measures like wearing masks, and physical distancing were successful in these areas.

At the same time, even the lower presence of antibodies in the housing complexes is considered encouraging as it points to a lesser number of infectees, due to better hygiene, more physical distancing, and other interventions by the BMC, the official added.

“These results will be valuable to learn more about herd immunity. Although it is still unclear what level of prevalence leads to herd immunity, findings indicate that, at least in slums, this could be attained sooner than later, if the immunity exists and persists in a significant proportion of the population,” the BMC said in a statement.

The anti-SARS-CoV2-IgG antibodies were detected using Chemiluminescence assay (CLIA) by the Abbott group, in what is billed as the largest such cross-sectional survey in India.

It was carried out in collaboration with Kasturba Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, ATE Chandra Foundation, and IDFC Institute.

The development comes a fortnight after the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged the success of the Maharashtra government in combating the Covid-19 outbreak in Dharavi.

China imports all time high PVC from India amid border tension

0

Giving rise to an anomalous situation, China imported record high PVC from India in June at a time when the two countries are locked in a tussle at the border amid calls for reducing trade flows.

China imported a record high PVC from India in June – more than five times compared to the volume recorded in May as India accelerated PVC exports during the COVID 19 lockdown, Global Rubber Markets reported.

It is a rare move as the Indian PVC market is net short. During the lockdown, India’s PVC demand plunged, prompting the cancellation of PVC deliveries to India. Suppliers had to move their cargoes to China to clear excess supplies, it added.

Looking forward, market sources said China’s PVC imports from India would likely slow as the lockdown ended early-June. For June delivery, market participants negotiated in May.

Polyvinyl Chloride (or PVC for short) is the third most widely produced plastic in the world following polyethylene and polypropylene, and it is used in a wide variety of applications in industry, construction, agriculture, consumables, packaging, power production, and public utilities. PVC is highly durable, resistant, and flexible, making it useful for use in clothing, pipes, insulation, and many other areas.

Indian companies have started submitting proposals to the government on ways to reduce import dependence on China, recommending measures such as levy of Covid-19 import duties on non-essential products and reduction of customs duty on plant and machinery from other countries.

The record exports of PVC from India come at a time when the government is looking at ways to curb imports from China and has banned several Chinese apps and companies.

K’taka starts Rs 5K-cr life sciences park project in B’luru

0

The Karnataka government has launched a Rs 5,000-crore project to build a life sciences park in the southern suburbs of the tech city, which has a potential to generate about 50,000 jobs, an official said on Wednesday.

“The work on the Bengaluru Life Sciences Park began as Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa laid its foundation stone on 52 acres of land at the Electronics City earlier in the day,” the official told IANS.

To be built under the public-private partnership (PPP) by Labzone Corporation, the 9-million square feet mega park’s first phase is scheduled to be completed by December 2022 to house about 150 domestic and overseas biotech firms.

“The park was envisioned two decades ago by the state vision group’s chairperson and Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw to build an ecosystem for promoting and developing biotechnology in the southern state on a global scale,” said Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan on the occasion.

With the help of the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology for R&D, the Bengaluru Bioinnovation Centre for synergy between academia and entrepreneurship, and the Centre for Human Genetics as part of the ecosystem, the life sciences park will become a global biotech hub.

“With 380 firms and 200 start-ups, Karnataka is home to about 60 percent of the biotech firms in the country, which have a 9 percent market share in Asia and 35 percent in the Indian subcontinent,” said Narayan, who also is the state’s minister for IT, BT and Science and Technology.

The park will also offer incubation space with shared instrumentation lab facilities and office suites for biotech enterprises and start-ups.

“The Indian biotech sector is at the forefront of medicine and treatment and RT-PCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction) tests, conducted to find if a person is Covid-19 positive or negative,” noted Narayan.

Shaw said the convergence of IT and BT will attract global biotech firms to invest and make use of the facilities in the integrated park.

“My endeavor is to put Karnataka and India on the global innovation map, with the helix biotech park as the nerve center of all activities,” Shaw said.

Park’s Chief Executive Chirag Purushotham said about 60 percent of the space would be reserved for the biotech cluster in the PPP model.

“The park will have R&D facilities in 20 acres, start-ups in 10 acres for disruptive and innovative products, and enterprises and multinationals in the remaining 22 acres,” said Purushotham.

“The park will make Bengaluru the biotech capital of India just as the Software Technology Park of India in the Electronics City and the Information Technology Park of India at Whitefield in the city’s eastern suburb have made the city the Silicon Valley of Asia,” Narayan added.

WI played into England’s hands after 1st Test win, feels Walsh

0

Former West Indies captain Courtney Walsh feels the Jason Holder-led side became defensive after their win in the first Test of the recently-concluded three-match series against England.

The Windies lost the next two games at the Old Trafford after winning the first Test in Southampton, thereby losing the chance to retain the Wisden Trophy.

“They were probably thinking ‘we’re 1-0 up, let’s play safe and try not to lose the next two’ and I think that played into England’s hands, especially in the last one with the history of the ground,” Walsh told Sky Sports.

“To win the toss twice and not bat first, it is a good question for them to answer. I think it probably cost us.

“But you still can’t take anything away from England, they played some very good cricket, they had some top-class bowlers and Broad came in with a point to prove in the second Test and just continued with that momentum. Once momentum swung England’s way, they were dominant,” the legendary fast bowler added.

Meanwhile, former England captain Alec Stewart heaped praise on all-rounder Chris Woakes, saying he is an unsung hero in the team.

Woakes returned figures of 5/50 as England beat West Indies by 269 runs in the third and final Test at the Old Trafford to clinch a 2-1 series win and regain the Wisden Trophy. In the two Test matches that he played in the series, Woakes picked up 11 wickets, five less than Stuart Broad.

“He’s almost the unsung hero of the England set-up because we talk about Broad and Anderson then the pace of Archer and Wood, whereas Woakes just goes quietly about his business,” Stewart was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“I’m a massive fan of Woakes, especially in England. His record in England is outstanding. It’s a real feather in his cap that he got the nod when Chris Silverwood said ‘we are picking our very best bowling attack for this Test match we have to win,” he added.

TN Guv in self-isolation as Raj Bhavan staff test positive

0

Vivo patents a new smartband with curved display: Report

0

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has patented a smart band with a curved display and a heart rate sensor.

The patent, which appeared on CNIPA (China’s Intellectual Property Administration) on Wednesday, seems to have been applied by Vivo on April 13, reports GizmoChina.

According to the report, looking at the patent images, the new Vivo smart band resembles similar offerings from both Xiaomi and Realme. The dial, however, differs slightly with rounded corners on a rectangular frame.

The top of the device also appears to have a cutout for a speaker, while the display is curved over the edges.

The straps follow a conventional design, but with one notable inclusion. One of the sides of the strap can be detached from the band revealing a charger strip.

Vivo recently patented a new smartphone design that features a full-screen display and rotating bottom panel.

Apart from a rotating bottom panel, the rest of the smartphone looks identical to normal Android devices. The front houses a punch-hole camera module at the top center. Volume buttons are located on the right edge and the power button is on the left.

Sushant case: Congress, BJP demand CBI probe

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress demanded a CBI probe into the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case on Wednesday, a day after late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s father, K. K. Singh, filed an FIR at Rajiv Nagar police station here.

BJP spokesman Nikhil Anand said Sushant Singh Rajput was a ‘brilliant’, ‘talented’, and ‘intellectual’ actor. His suspicious death has hurt his fan across the world.

He said, “We support the actor’s family for filing the case, we are with them. All important people from all walks of life have demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter.”

He further said, “There should be a CBI investigation in Sushant case, so that ‘Bihar’s son’ can get justice. Bollywood’s mafia, Hawala, anti-national and criminal alliances could come to the fore.”

Meanwhile, Congress has also reiterated the demand for the CBI investigation into the matter. Lalan Kumar, former president of Bihar Pradesh Youth Congress, said on the basis of the FIR filed by Sushan’s father in Rajiv Nagar, it can be said that many ‘secrets’ are hidden in his death. His fans should get answers to these questions.

He said that the investigation of this case should be done by the CBI so that the reality of the case can be revealed to everyone.

Kumar had earlier written to the Governor requesting a CBI inquiry.

Earlier, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) President Chirag Paswan also spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over the phone. Paswan said that the Bihar and Maharashtra Police are seriously investigating the case, but it is better to hand over the investigation to the CBI to solve the suicide scandal.

Sushant had allegedly committed suicide on June 14 at his flat in Mumbai’s Bandra. Sushant’s father has lodged a case in Patna on June 25 against Sushant’s friend Riya and her family under various sections of the IPC.

Narayani river submerges houses, people repose faith in Lord Shiva

0

The surging waters in nearly 12 districts of the northern part of Bihar have submerged many houses. This year the Kosi river, which has wreaked havoc in Bihar, has not yet reached its most turbulent form.

However, the Gandak river, which is also known as Narayani, has devastated areas in Gopalganj and Champaran districts. People’s homes have been destroyed yet they have faith in Lord Shiva.

Houses and people’s belongings have been submerged by the overflowing Narayani. People did not want to leave their homes and go to relief camps, but to save their lives they had to take shelter in the higher reaches or relief camps set up by the government.

The Gandak’s water has wreaked havoc in the Sadar, Kuchaikote, Manjha, Barauli, Sidhwalia, and Baikunthpur blocks of Gopalganj. The villagers in these blocks have migrated to other areas. The pain of leaving their homes is writ large on their faces but they have not lost faith in Lord Shiva (‘Narayan’).

Sushma, who is staying in a high school converted into a flood relief camp in Manikpur village along with her family, says that she and her husband did not want to leave their home but the locals brought them here.

She says, “Narayani river has submerged everything. Now I trust only Lord Shiva. If God has given us birth, he will make the arrangements for food.”

Gopalganj district magistrate Arshad Aziz said nearly 14 panchayats in the district are completely submerged while 37 panchayats are partially affected. He said 1.78 lakh people have been badly hit by the floods.

The condition of Pyarepur village is worse. The village is completely submerged. People have taken shelter in relief camps. Keshwar, who lives in Pyarepur, is living in a roadside tent with his family. They say no assistance has been provided by the state government. Community kitchens are open but children are not getting adequate food.

They say, “Everything is destroyed. Water entered the house and submerged everything. A kutcha house was built there, whether it will have to be built again, God only knows.”

The Gopalganj district magistrate says nearly 1.33 lakh people have been evacuated from the flood-affected areas. He said that relief and rescue operations are still on. As many as 13 relief camps and 112 community kitchens are functional in the district which house more than 5,100 people.

Air India goes for hiring as employees protest LWP policy

0

Adding insult to injury of employees as they protest what they call “a draconian” Leave Without Pay (LWP) policy going up to five years, Air India is on a recruitment drive to hire new people.

Air India Express has put out an advertisement to hire in the finance and medical services department. The general principle is that if a company is laying off people and sending them on long leave without pay, then it does not hire fresh personnel.

In the advertisement, Air India Express has invited applications from Indian citizens (wherever domiciled) for the posts on a fixed-term contract basis.

The positions in the medical services department include Chief Medical Officer and Senior Assistant, Medical.

The positions open for hiring in the Finance Department include Deputy Chief of Finance, Manager-Finance, and Deputy Manager-Finance.

Interested and eligible candidates have been asked to submit their applications within 15 days of this advertisement.

This will add fuel to the fire as employees across the board from pilots to service engineers are protesting pay cuts and Leave Without Pay in Air India. The company is also on the block for privatization.

Air India has justified the cut in allowances of existing employees by citing the precarious financial position due to COVID 19.

Air India said in a tweet: “There has been no reduction in the Basic pay, DA, and HRA of any category of employees. The rationalization of allowances had to be implemented on account of the difficult financial condition of the airline that was exacerbated by COVID-19.”

The pilots have questioned this claim and said that this is a devious plan to ensure a minuscule pay cut for senior AI officials. Basic Pay, HRA, and DA constitute 80 percent of Gross Pay for senior AI officials.

“By ‘rationalizing’ the allowances only, pilots and cabin crew are hit worst as it forms 80 percent of our gross pay. Doesn’t the difficult financial condition of the airline warrant a contribution from the management too based on their actual cost to the company or just flying crew alone?” the pilots said in the letter.

Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) have accused Air India of spreading “deliberate misinformation on social media” and questioned the “duplicitous” tweets by Air India calling them “misleading”.

“Air India has recently posted some duplicitous tweets that are misleading the general public”, the pilot’s associations said.

“Recent decisions of the Air India Board regarding rationalization of staff cost were reviewed in a meeting at @MoCA_goi this evening. The meeting reiterated that unlike other carriers which have laid off a large number of their employees, no employee of Air India will be laid off,” said the Air India tweet.

To this, the pilots responded in a letter to Aruna Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Air India, “A lay off means settlement of arrears, gratuity, PF and retrenchment compensation by law. Management is trying to dodge this by introducing Compulsory Leave without Pay for up to 5 years to send employees on exile.”

Covid-19 virus has been circulating in bats for decades: Study

0

An international team of researchers has discovered that the lineage that gave rise to the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that is responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, has been circulating in bats for decades and likely includes other viruses with the ability to infect humans.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Microbiology, have implications for the prevention of future pandemics stemming from this lineage.

“Coronaviruses have genetic material that is highly recombinant, meaning different regions of the virus’s genome can be derived from multiple sources,” said study researcher Maciej Boni from Penn State University in the US.

“This has made it difficult to reconstruct SARS-CoV-2’s origins. You have to identify all the regions that have been recombining and trace their histories. To do that, we put together a diverse team with expertise in recombination, phylogenetic dating, virus sampling, and molecular and viral evolution,” Boni added.

The team used three different bioinformatic approaches to identify and remove the recombinant regions within the Covid-19 virus genome.

Next, they reconstructed phylogenetic histories for the non-recombinant regions and compared them to each other to see which specific viruses have been involved in recombination events in the past.

They were able to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships between the Covid-19 virus and its closest known bat and pangolin viruses.

The researchers found that the lineage of viruses to which the Covid-19 virus belongs diverged from other bat viruses about 40-70 years ago.

Importantly, although SARS-CoV-2 is genetically similar (about 96 percent) to the RaTG13 coronavirus, which was sampled from a Rhinolophus affinis horseshoe bat in 2013 in Yunnan province, China, the team found that it diverged from RaTG13 a relatively long time ago, in 1969.

“The ability to estimate divergence times after disentangling recombination histories, which is something we developed in this collaboration, may lead to insights into the origins of many different viral pathogens,” said study researcher Philippe Lemey.

The team found that one of the older traits that SARS-CoV-2 shares with its relatives is the receptor-binding domain (RBD) located on the Spike protein, which enables the virus to recognize and bind to receptors on the surfaces of human cells.

“This means that other viruses that are capable of infecting humans are circulating in horseshoe bats in China,” said study researcher David L Robertson from the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research.

The team concluded that preventing future pandemics will require better sampling within wild bats and the implementation of human disease surveillance systems that are able to identify novel pathogens in humans and respond in real-time.

Hetero launches Favivir to treat mild to moderate Covid symptoms

Hetero, one of India’s leading generic pharmaceutical companies and the world’s largest producer of antiretroviral drugs, on Wednesday announced the launch of generic Favipiravir in India under the brand name Favivir for treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms.

Hetero’s Favivir (Favipiravir 200 mg) is priced at Rs 59 per tablet and is marketed and distributed by Hetero Healthcare Limited. The product is available from Wednesday at all retail medical outlets and hospital pharmacies across the country and will be sold only on prescription.

Hetero has been granted the manufacturing and marketing approval for Favipiravir from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).

Favivir is the second drug developed by Hetero after Covifor (Remdesivir) used in the treatment of COVID. It is an oral antiviral medication that has demonstrated positive clinical outcomes.

Favivir improves treatment accessibility to a significant amount of COVID-19 patient population, which usually sustains mild to moderate symptoms, the company said in a statement.

Backed by strong vertical integration capabilities, the drug is being manufactured at Hetero’s world-class formulation facility in India, which has been approved by stringent global regulatory authorities such as USFDA and the EU, among others.
