England opening batsman Rory Burns will be out of action for four months after undergoing surgery on ruptured ligaments in his left ankle. He will miss England’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in March.
Burns suffered the injury while playing football in the warm-up before England’s training session at Newlands, the day before the second Test against South Africa. Kent’s young opener Zak Crawley replaced him in the side.
Burns, who has been England’s batting find of the last year and made 84 in the second innings at Centurion, will now undergo a period of rehabilitation in the hope of being fit to play for Surrey at the start of the County Championship season in April.
In response to the injury, England has now banned football from their training sessions.
