Sushma Discusses on strategic Chabahar Port

External Affairs Ministry Sushma Swaraj made an unexpected stopover at Teheran, the capital city of Iran. Sushma’s visit comes as a surprise to the Indian and Iranian officials, with the strategic Chabahar Port inauguration one day away. Sushma met her counterpart Javed Zarif during a luncheon on her way back from Russia.
Sushma Swaraj was coming from Sochi, after attending the SCO – Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The External Affairs ministry stated that the counterparts spoke in length and details about trade, global and regional developments of mutual interests. Sushma Swaraj and Javed Zarif had also discussed on the bilateral relations between the two nations.
Though not confirmed, it is believed that the aspect of the strategic Chabahar Port has been of prime importance between the leaders.
The Chabahar Port is located in South-Eastern Iran, in the Gulf of Oman. The port helps India to bypass Pakistan and establish a strategic transit route among Afghanistan, Iran and India. The port is expected to boost trade relations between India – Afghanistan and India – Iran.
The Chabahar Port will be inaugurated tomorrow by Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the presence of officials and representatives from Afghanistan and India.
