The latest ticket pricing GO issued by the Telangana government has triggered concern among both the film trade and moviegoers. The Revanth Reddy government has introduced a new classification system for theatres and fixed ticket prices based on the facilities available at each venue.

According to the new guidelines, single-screen theatres can charge up to Rs. 300, including GST, if they offer facilities such as Dolby 7.1 or higher sound systems and 2K/4K projection. A significant number of single screens in Telangana reportedly fall under this category. More than half of the state’s single screens and nearly two-thirds of Hyderabad’s single screens could reportedly qualify as Special Theatres and therefore be eligible for the Rs. 300 ticket price.

The development has raised concerns about the potential impact on theatrical footfalls. Single screens have traditionally attracted audiences by offering a more affordable movie-going experience compared with premium multiplexes. If ticket prices rise significantly, some regular moviegoers could reconsider spending on theatrical outings.

The situation could become even more challenging if distributors and theatre owners widely adopt the maximum permitted prices. With single-screen tickets potentially reaching levels comparable to multiplex pricing, the traditional affordability advantage of these theatres could gradually disappear.

While the new GO provides a structured framework for ticket pricing, its practical impact will depend on how theatre owners and distributors implement the revised rates. The industry is now closely watching how exhibitors, distributors, and other stakeholders respond to the new pricing structure and whether any further discussions or changes emerge.

For audiences, the key concern remains simple: will a trip to the cinema become significantly more expensive in Telangana? The answer will become clearer once theatres begin implementing the revised rates.
