In the recent events, both states have passed bills, asking for an increase in reservation quotas for several communities above the required 50 percent. While campaigning in Gujarat on Monday, PM Modi, had emphasized that the 50 percent cap on reservation quota is decided by the APEX Court, cannot be overruled by all political parties, referring it to the Congress party’s assurance of providing reservations to the Patidar community in the state. These statements definitely had irritated the governments of Andhra and Telangana.

The Telangana State government has put a proposal and passed bills in the State Assembly, increasing reservation for the minority community (Muslims) from 4 percent to 12 percent, and for Scheduled Tribes from 6 percent to 10 percent, leading to an overall increase of reservation quota by 12 percent.

While the Andhra Pradesh state government also recently passed a bill in the Assembly, that provides 5 percent reservations to Kapu, Balija, Telaga and Ontari castes, increasing the overall quota to 55 percent.

Telugu states CM’s believe to take the bill in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution so that the courts will not have scope to object in the boosted quota.

Talking to media, BJP State President, Dr. K Laxman told, it had become a tendency for the states to promise whatever they think and send it to the center to take political advantage.
