The vaccine ‘Typbar TCV’ is manufactured by Bharat Biotech of Hyderabad, India is approved by World Health Organization (WHO) is a highly effective typhoid vaccine which is the only one safe for infants too. Though the vaccine was approved in the month of December last year itself, it was announced by WHO on Wednesday, 3rd January 2018.

It is a big thing for India to get the approval. It means the new vaccine can be purchased by donors, including United Nations agencies, for use in Poor countries.

Typhoid fever is serious and sometimes can be fatal which spreads through contaminated water and food. The symptoms include a headache, fever, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. This fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria found in sewage and contaminated food, infects up to 20 million people annually and kills up to 1, 60,000 of them. They are mostly young children. Typhoid once killed many Americans. Typhoid Mary’ was a famous carrier and it is now mostly found in Asia and Africa.

The importance of an effective, affordable vaccine has increased urgently as urban slums grow, hotter weather spreads the disease to new regions and the bacteria develop resistance to more antibiotics.
