Officials said identification of black spots and corrective measures helped in bringing down the number of accidents

Hyderabad: Battered as they might be, Hyderabad roads are however a little bit safer than they were last year, if the number of fatal accidents and deaths from January to September are considered.

According to the Hyderabad Traffic Police, some corrective steps appear to have saved several lives in the city, with pedestrian deaths coming down by 17 per cent, the overall number of deaths in accidents reducing by 11 per cent and the number of fatal accidents down by 13 per cent.

Officials said identification of black spots and corrective measures helped in bringing down the number of accidents. As against 225 fatal accidents from January to September in 2018, this year there were only 196 in the corresponding period. The number of deaths came down from 232 to 206.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar said the police took up several corrective measures to ensure safety of commuters. “Joint inspections with other stakeholders, including GHMC, Hyderabad Road Development Corporation, Roads and Buildings Department and National Highways Authority of India, were held. Based on the findings, various corrective measures were taken up on the roads,” he said.

Of the total 196 accidents reported in 2019, 116 were attributed to speeding, 46 to negligent driving, 12 to drunk driving, eight due to negligence of driver/pedestrian and six due to minor driving.

The metro authority said that the picture was old and that it had been rectified.

Photos of a large crack on the wall of a metro station in Hyderabad surfaced on social media on Thursday, leading to panic after a woman died last month at a metro station. In an appeal to commuters, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) said that there was no reason to panic.

Posting an image of the crack, one Twitter user said, “Poor quality of construction of Hyderabad Metro was once again exposed at Prakash Nagar Metro station.”

However, HMRL MD N V S Reddy said that the crack had already been rectified, and asked the general public not to believe the old photos that were circulating on social media.

Some old pictures of surface crack rectification works etc, are being posted and circulated by some persons. As I mentioned, we are closely monitoring the rectification works by L&T and there is no need for pressing the panic button,” Reddy tweeted.

The metro authority said that the picture was old and that it had been rectified.

“At some places, the plaster is thicker, and at such places, the plaster and surface cracks are being removed and rectified by six L&T teams during the night, with boom lifts and other equipment, without obstruction to traffic,” he added.

Last month, the death of a 24-year-old woman who was standing under a metro station had caused wide outrage. Mounika was taking shelter from the rain at the pedestrian zone under the Ameerpet metro station when a chunk of mortar from the station fell on her.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) had agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family, besides another Rs 15 lakh from an insurance company and offered a job to a family member.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) also initiated a probe into the incident. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao ordered an inquiry to check the quality of metro rail structures.

Rajnath Singh Defends Performing ‘Shastra Puja’ For Rafale Jets Amid Controversy

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that the seven Rafale fighter jets which India has procured from France will arrive in April or May next year.

Singh made his statement after arriving from France where he had gone for the official handover of the first fighter jet. The ceremony had sparked a massive debate after Singh performed a ‘Shastra puja’, etching ‘Om’ on the aircraft and adorning it with flowers.

Several leaders including Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar had hit out saying it had been akin to a puja performed for a new truck.

“People can say whatever they want. I did what I thought was right and I will continue to do so. This is our faith, that there is a superpower and I have believed it since childhood,” was Rajnath Singh‘s response.

A report by the news outlet ANI also quoted the BJP leader as saying that people should have the right to pray according to their beliefs and that he would not have objected to the criticism if everyone had felt the same way.

“I feel there must have been a difference of opinion over the issue in Congress as well,” he said while referring to the differing stands taken by Maharashtra Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam and Leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

According to Defence Minister, the France visit had been a success and he had also held a 35-minute meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“After induction of Rafale fighter aircraft, the combat capability of the Indian Air Force will increase. We don’t want to intimidate anyone by doing so. We will neither fear anyone nor will we intimidate,” ANI quoted the Defence Minister as saying.
