Mary Kom for Padma Vibhushan, PV Sindhu for Padma Bhushan in All-Women Sports Ministry List

Mary Kom, The name of six-time world winner has been recommended for the most prestigious Padma Vibhushan award, this is the first time that an athlete’s name has been put forward by the sports ministry for the most prominent award after Bharat Ratna.

Mary Kom was among nine recommended members list by the ministry for the Padma awards, and in another first, all the nine athletes this time around are women, the Times of India reported.

Badminton superstar P V Sindhu who was the first Indian to achieve the world championship in august this year was recommended by the sports ministry for Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award.

Mary Kom was felicitated with the Padma Bhushan in the year 2013 and Padma Shri in 2006. If she receives the Padma Vibhushan award, it would make her the fourth athlete to do so after chess wizard Viswanathan Anand in 2007, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in 2008 and mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, who got the award posthumously in 2008.

Sindhu was ignored for the Padma Bhushan award in 2017 after her name was recommended by the sports ministry. She achieved the Padma Shri award in 2015.

There were seven other athletes recommended for the Padma Shri award. They are wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra, T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur, hockey skipper Rani Rampal, former shooter Suma Shirur and mountaineer twin sisters, Tashi and Nungshi Malik, according to TOI report.

The recommendations list have been sent to the Padma awards committee in the home ministry. The names of the awardees will be announced on the eve of the Republic Day next year.

After Gujarat, Karnataka cut penalties on traffic violations

after the Gujarat government announced an extreme cut on the penalties for traffic violations under the law amended Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday said that there will be drastic cut on the traffic penalties in the state. The BJP government Karnataka had announced a drastic cut even as the Centre was justifying the steep fine amounts under the amended MV Act.

In some of the cases, the reduction in Gujarat is coming down to Rs 1,000 from Rs 10,000. “Regarding the cut in the penalties for violation of traffic rules under the Motor Vehicle Act, we will get the orders of the Gujarat government. I have guided our officers that we will tag along that order here also. Mostly in about two-three days like in Gujarat, here also we will try to cut the high penalties,” Yediyurappa said in the press conference.

“The trick is not to overthink whether a film will work or not. Successor failure is not in our hands. As actors, all we can do is trust our instincts and just go ahead with it. When you are narrating the story of a middle-aged man, who’s already branded as a failure in life, and then, after all the struggle that he goes through, he dies in the film’s climax, it’s not something which you see in every other Telugu film. Despite all this, the film collected a share of Rs 30 crores, and it’s being remade in Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada. We are also planning to release it in China. In my view, Jersey was a huge success,” Nani says, adding, “It’s funny because when I did MCA, I was asked if I was going to do a good film anytime soon, and when I do a film like Jersey, I’m asked if it’s going to collect as much as MCA did.”

After the report that top Sri Lankan cricketers are going to pull out of the tour. Pakistani Science and Technology Minister Fawad Hussain Chaudhry tweeted that India is threatening the Lankan player to opt-out of the tour.

“Some of the sports commentators told me that India threatened Sri Lankan players that they will be ousted from IPL if they don’t refuse Pak visit, this is really a cheap strategy patriotism from sports to space is something we must criticize, really cheap on the part of Indian sports authorities,” Chaudhry had his say with this tweet.

Although, Sri Lankan minister Harin Fernando had refused the claims made by Fawad Hussain Chaudhry. “There is no truth to reports that India influenced Sri Lankan players not to play in Pakistan. Some were determined not to play purely based on the 2009 incident. Respect the decision of the players who were willing to travel. We have a well-balanced team so that we hope to beat Pakistan in Pakistan,” Harin Fernando tweeted on Tuesday night.

Sri Lanka have already announced the squad on Wednesday to the tour of Pakistan. But Sri Lankan cricket board is going to re-verify the security in Pakistan for the upcoming series. The tour is going to underway from 27th of September.
