Former Prime Minister of India, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi was born on 19th of November, 1917. She was born to Jawaharlal Nehru (first Indian Prime Minister) and Kamaladevi. Indira Gandhi breathed her last after she was shot by her security guards. Let us know an interesting incident that took place after the death of Indira Gandhi.
Late Ram Mohan Rao, then Chief of Doordarshan news Division shared an interesting fact. ‘I was having my breakfast on 31st of October 1984. My RAX (emergency) Telephone rang repeatedly. I heard HY Sarada Prasad, Advisor for Indira Gandhi. He said, Ram Mohan Rao, the Prime Minister has been shot by her security guards. She is critically injured. She has been taken to the AIIMS for the treatment. Contact the doctors for more information.
On hearing this, I immediately ran to the News Room. We announced in the bulletin that ‘The Prime Minister has been attacked. She is being treated at AIIMS.’
The news that many people celebrated the ‘attack on Indira’ led to protests and riots across the nation. We had to stay in the Doordarshan Office for the next 3 days.
Vice-President of India, R Venkatraman came to the News Room and announced that ‘Rajiv Gandhi will be the Prime Minister of India’ on the same evening’, shared Late Ram Mohan Rao in an occasion.
