Women’s Reservation Bill: Sonia Gandhi Asserts, ‘It’s Ours, Apna Hai’:
Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), responded to the news of the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Women’s Reservation Bill by asserting, “It is ours, apna hai.” She made this remark upon her arrival at Parliament on Tuesday morning.
This statement from Sonia Gandhi came following the Union Cabinet’s decision, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to approve the Constitution Amendment Bill, which paves the way for the introduction of the historic Women’s Reservation Bill in the ongoing special session of Parliament. The Congress, during its recent Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, had passed a resolution demanding the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament Special Session.
On the previous day, leaders like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP leader Supriya Sule, and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had also urged the passage of the Bill in the Special Session. It’s worth noting that the Bill, which aims to reserve 33 percent of seats for women, was initially proposed by the H.D. Deve Gowda government in 1996.
The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government later reintroduced the legislation in 2008, known officially as the Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth Amendment) Bill. While the Rajya Sabha passed the bill in 2010, it could not secure passage in the Lok Sabha and lapsed following its dissolution in 2014.
