The Hindu community leaders, Rajan Zed, in particular, lashed out at Academy winner Gwyneth Paltrow after she promoted ‘expensive yoga’ through her company GOOP. Mr. Zed expressed that, ‘Gwyneth should not promote expensive meditation stuff in the name of ancient yoga. These techniques and practices learned from ancient Hindu scriptures can be practiced and successfully mastered at home with little or no cost.’
Gwyneth came under fire after her company started promoting ‘Mediation band’ priced at $350. The meditation band claims that ‘it will guide you back to the state of meditation, that’s when your mind starts to wander’. The Gwyneth company is also promoting Love Yoga Retreat for $2400. Average single drop-in sessions at yoga studios cost between $8 to $23, or $12 on an average.
Rajan Zed, the President of Universal Society of Hinduism further stated that ‘it is highly unwarranted to promote highly priced yoga products. Having mercantile greed is inappropriate’.
‘According to ancient Hindu scripture Taittiriya Upanishad, Meditation is Brahman (the supreme being). Yoga and meditation that evolved from Hinduism have been helping the world for thousands of years. And commercial abuse these ancient Hindu techniques is not welcomed,’ said Zed.
