0

Mumbai, May 19 During the inauguration of the India pavilion at Cannes 2022 on Wednesday, Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman explained why we should tell stories about the West and try to break the boundaries.

“I can’t say much because I’ve been in the industry for almost 40 years – ten years of playing outside as a musician and 30 years as a composer. I was a director for the sensory cinematic experience,” he said.

Rahman further shared that despite the fact we have our stories to tell, we must not restrict ourselves.

“Even though we have so many stories, we should tell stories about the West because we have a narrative about the West. We should be doing that.”

“The West does Gandhi, he (Shekhar Kapur) is the man who has done ‘Elizabeth: The Virgin Queen’. I am super inspired by him,” he added while hinting toward filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

On the reason for choosing the English language for his film, he elaborated: “The reason why I did this in the English language and for an international audience was to see if it is possible to break those boundaries and set a new path. Even if we fail it’s fine. I am talking about Le Musk, the sensory cinematic experience in Cannes XR. I want to thank my whole team, and please do check it out and see how we can improve and celebrate it. God bless you all. Thank you so much.”

Pratik Gandhi to play Mahatma Gandhi in biographical web series

0

Mumbai, May 19 A new biographical series based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi is in the works.

The multi-season series, which has been adapted from historian Ramachandra Guha’s two books — ‘Gandhi Before India’ and ‘Gandhi: The Years that Changed the World’ — has cast ‘Scam 1992’ star Pratik Gandhi in the lead role. Pratik incidentally, shares his last name with the father of the nation.

Sharing his excitement about the announcement, Pratik Gandhi said, “I deeply believe in the Gandhian philosophy and its values that echo simplicity in its purest forms. Personally too, I strive to achieve and imbibe many of his qualities and teachings in my daily life.”

He further mentioned, “Moreover, playing the role of Mahatma is very close to my heart ever since my theatre days and now it is a huge honor to yet again essay the role of this legendary leader, on screen. I believe it’s a huge responsibility to essay this role with dignity, grace, and conviction and I can’t wait to embark on this journey with Sameer Nair and his team at Applause.”

Mahatma Gandhi taught the world that a revolution, resistance, and reclamation of freedom don’t always need to be violent, they can be achieved through truth, love, non-violence, and iron-willed determination.

From his earliest days to his actions in South Africa to the great struggle in India, the series will tell the lesser-known stories of his life which played an important role in shaping young Gandhi into a Mahatma. It will also tell the stories of all his compatriots and contemporaries of the freedom movement, incredible personalities who, along with him, played an integral part in the shaping of what became free and modern India.

Ramachandra Guha is confident that the series will do complete justice to his books. “Along the way, he made many friends and not a few enemies too. I am delighted that my books on Gandhi are now being adapted for this ambitious and exciting series. I am confident that it will bring the complex contours of Gandhi’s life and the moral essence of his teachings to viewers across the globe,” Guhar said in a statement.

Applause Entertainment, which is a part of the Aditya Birla Group, has acquired the rights to Guha’s books and the series will be produced at global standards for a worldwide audience and shot extensively across several Indian and International locations.

Sameer Nair, the CEO, of Applause Entertainment, said, “Ramachandra Guha is a historian and storyteller par excellence, and we are honored to adapt his classic books — Gandhi before India, and Gandhi – The Years That Changed the World — to screen. We couldn’t think of anyone better than the incredibly talented Pratik Gandhi to bring alive the Mahatma, and his philosophies of peace and love that shook the world.”

“We believe that only a richly layered, multi-season drama series will do real justice to Gandhi and to all the great personalities that embed the proud and illustrious history of India’s Freedom Struggle. This is a story of the birthing of modern India for a global audience,” he concluded.

Rajesh Khanna, Big B’s iconic film ‘Anand’ set for a remake

0

Mumbai, May 19 Filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic ‘Anand’, starring the then superstar Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, is set for a remake helmed by Sameer Raj Sippy, grandson of the film’s original producer, N.C. Sippy, and Vikram Khakhar.

The director and cast of the film, which is in its scripting stage, are yet to be finalized.

Sharing his excitement about the development, producer Vikram Khakhar said: “Digging into our own classics, we will find invaluable gems rather than scouting for stories, internationally or regionally. Placing Anand in the post-Covid era, where we emphasize the value of life, will enhance the story of Anand.”

The 1971 original featured Rajesh Khanna as a terminally ill cancer patient, Anand Sehgal, the onus of whose treatment is taken by Amitabh. However, destiny has its own plans as Anand’s cancer reaches its final stage and he passes away but not before touching the lives of many people whom he spent time with, including a total stranger Isa Bhai Suratwala played by the legendary Johnny Walker.

Producer Sameer Raj Sippy feels that such stories need to be told to the new generation, as they should be made aware of our cinematic heritage. He said: “Keeping in mind the sensibilities of the original film and the emotions attached, I felt the current generation needs to be retold many stories that are so relevant today and especially when there is a great appetite for good content.”

The details regarding the film’s development and technical crew are under wraps. Produced by Sameer Raj Sippy and Vikram Khakhar, the film will soon go into production after finalizing its cast.

Talking about the song, Kangana Ranaut said, “We have released ‘Tu Hai Dhaakad’ during the last leg of our promotional campaign as this song sets the tone of the film. It showcases Agent Agni as an unstoppable force who embodies the never-say-die attitude. The song has an anthem-like quality to it and encompasses my character’s grit and gumption in herself and her abilities.”

Talking about the song, director Razneesh Ghai added, “I wanted a song which had a rousing aspect to it. I knew that he would be able to understand what I had in mind and translate it into a tune.”

He added, “The song is inspiring and instills a sense of how one can achieve things against all odds and should never accept defeat. Ishitta Arun has written lyrics that do full justice to the spirit of the film’s story and Agent Agni’s fortitude. Vasundhara Vee’s vocals elevate the song to a whole new level and her singing style makes the song soar and how.”

Producer Deepak Mukut said, “The song ‘Tu Hai Dhaakad’ is inspirational and really apt for the film’s theme and story. It feels wonderful to see that the film which we have made with our blood and sweat, is also scoring high musically. This song highlights the film’s theme and Agent Agni’s spirit, and it will deeply connect the audience to Kangana’s character.”

“All the songs in the film have been composed beautifully and flow organically into the film’s narrative. Soham Rockstar Entertainment is also launching its own music label, SRE Music with Dhaakad, and we are beyond proud to have the film’s album as our inaugural project. Its music will resonate with every audience member and will stay with them long after leaving the theatres,” he concluded.

Presented by Soham Rockstar Entertainment, produced by Deepak Mukut and Sohel Maklai, and co-produced by Hunar Mukut, ‘Dhaakad’, which also stars Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta, is arriving in theatres on May 20, 2022.

Adivi Sesh: I can’t be Major Sandeep, but I can be his parents’ second son

0

Mumbai, May 19 ‘Major’ actor Adivi Sesh spoke about spending time with Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s family during the course of making the film, which is based on the brave martyr who foiled the plans of terrorists by holding the fort during the 26/11 attacks of Mumbai.

Speaking at the song launch of ‘Oh Isha’ from ‘Major’, the actor told the media, “We persuaded uncle and amma (Major Sandeep’s parents) endlessly to meet us just once. Uncle hung up on me a couple of times when I first tried to get in touch with him, then we got a girl from our team to speak with him so that he might agree to talk to us. Eventually, he agreed to meet us.”

Sesh, who has also written the film, continued, “When I met him, he told me that a lot of filmmakers from Bollywood or even Malayalam cinema have tried to approach him but he declined every time because all of them gave away that impression that they were doing us a favor. This he felt was a genuine effort from our side to portray his son’s story.”

“During the course of filming, uncle and amma became a family. ‘Main off-screen Major toh nahi ban sakta par I can try to become their second son (I may not become a Major off-screen but I can surely become their second son’,” the actor added.

“We have dubbed the film in Malayalam as well, out of respect for the great man as he was from Kerala. There were no commercial considerations with regards to this decision,” he concluded.

‘Major’ is set to release on June 3 in cinema halls in Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam.
