BJP Condemns Pragya Thakur’s Godse comment, Dumps Her From Defence Panel

BJP MP Pragya Thakur has been removed from the consultative committee of the defense ministry a day after she described Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as a patriot in parliament. Her comments had sparked outrage, with the opposition in Lok Sabha condemning what it called the “BJP’s deplorable hate politics.”

“We have decided that Pragya Singh Thakur will be removed from the consultative committee of defense, and in this session, she will not be allowed to participate in BJP parliamentary party meetings,” said BJP’s working president JP Nadda.

“Her statement yesterday in the parliament is condemnable. BJP never supports such a statement or ideology,” said Mr. Nadda.

Pragya Thakur, a first-time MP, made the Godse comment during a discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday. As protests erupted in the house, BJP members asked Pragya Thakur to sit down. “That is the heart of the RSS and the BJP. That is their soul and no matter how much they say otherwise, it will always come out,” said Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

Later, pressed by reporters to clarify her remarks, Pragya Thakur said, “Listen to what I said first. I’d reply tomorrow.”

“The very soch (thinking) of Nathuram Godse being deshbhakt (patriot), should end,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in parliament today.

There was outrage and much social media debate after Pragya Thakur was last week listed among the 21 members of the parliamentary consultative committee on Defence chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The BJP had said that the first-time MP can help in “framing right methodology” so that innocents are not “victimized” the way she was by the Congress-led government.

Pragya Thakur, a 2008 Malegaon blasts accused, is out on bail and is facing trial for charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

She had been berated earlier this year by her party for calling Nathuram Godse a patriot.

The TSRTC management further said that they have powers to deduct salaries and recover losses from the protesting employees.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) management on Wednesday told the Telangana High Court that the workers are not entitled to salaries as they went on an ‘illegal’ strike. The court was hearing a writ petition filed by Telangana Jathiya Mazdoor Union seeking a direction for the payment of salaries for the month of September.

Additional Advocate General J Ramchander Rao representing the TSRTC management, however, told the court that the management is vested with powers not only to deduct salary of the workers who went on the ‘illegal’ strike but is also empowered to recover losses suffered by the Corporation during the strike period under the provisions of the Payment of Wages Act. The AAG further contended that the high court cannot issue any direction in the issue, The Hindu reported.

According to the management, the 52-day strike by the TSRTC employees which began on October 5 was ‘illegal.’ The merits of the strike’s legality have been transferred to the Labour Commissioner by the High Court. The labor court is yet to make a decision on this. Though the 48,000-odd employees called off their strike on Monday, the government refused to take them back, stating that they would take a call on the matter only after the Labour court hears the matter and passes directions.

The New Indian Express reported that after hearing the arguments, the court said that prima facie appeared that the employees were entitled to the salary. However, as the petitioner’s counsel couldn’t make a convincing argument contesting the AAG’s observation, Justice Shavili directed them to come prepared for the next hearing scheduled for December 4.

It must be recalled that earlier in October, the court had asked the management to pay the salary for the month of September to the protesting workers. However, the TSRTC management expressed its helplessness and said that it requires Rs 239 crore to pay the salaries to over 48,000 employees while it had only Rs 7.49 crore.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will take over as Maharashtra Chief Minister today and head a Sena-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-Congress alliance. He is likely to be sworn in with six ministers -two from each party.

NCP’s Ajit Pawar, who returned to the party fold after an 80-hour stint as Deputy Chief Minister of a BJP-led government, may remarkably get the same post in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Sources say, however, that he may not be sworn in today.

Ajit Pawar may face competition in the form of party colleague Jayant Patil, who had replaced him as chief of the NCP legislature party during his short-lived rebellion.

Congress will be given the post of Speaker, for which the name of former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is being speculated.

Of the 43 Maharashtra ministries, the Sena is likely to get 16, the NCP 15 and the Congress 12. The allocation of ministries is yet to be decided, say sources, indicating tough negotiations ahead.
With the Congress getting the Speaker’s post, the NCP has reportedly demanded an extra ministry.

The Shiv Sena, which emerged the second largest party in last month’s Maharashtra election with 56 seats in the 288-member assembly, tied up with the NCP (54) and Congress (44) after ending its alliance with the BJP (105) over power-sharing.

The Sena had insisted on rotational chief ministership, which the BJP rejected.

The BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis resigned on Tuesday, four days after a controversial early morning oath ceremony in which Ajit Pawar was sworn in as his deputy. Before the oath, President’s Rule was revoked at 5.47 am following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval through a rarely used rule in which allows the bypassing of the cabinet for emergency decisions.

Mr. Fadnavis resigned after the Supreme Court ordered him to prove his majority in an immediate floor test. The BJP was 40 short of a majority and Ajit Pawar had failed to bring in NCP MLAs required to close the gap.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar sparked alarm, controversy and furious debate in Maharashtra this morning after leading his party in support of the BJP in its bid to retain power in Maharashtra. Mr. Pawar, who was last month named by the Enforcement Directorate in the Rs. 25,000-crore Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank Ltd. the scam was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Seconds earlier the BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, whose government had repeatedly attacked Ajit Pawar over alleged corruption charges, had been sworn in as Chief Minister for a second term.

Ajit Pawar served as Deputy Chief Minister between November 2010 and September 2012 before resigning over allegations of an irrigation scam. “I am just an MLA now. I won’t accept any ministry or post till I am cleared of all allegations,” he said at the time.

The accusations Mr. Pawar faced at the time included granting about 32 contracts within three months worth Rs. 13,500 crores in the state’s Vidarbha region at high rates.
In 2014, soon after taking charge as Chief Minister for the first time, Devendra Fadnavis had sanctioned an investigation against Ajit Pawar by the state anti-corruption bureau.

On being charged by the Enforcement Directorate, just before October polls, Ajit Pawar quit as MLA saying he was “upset that Sharad Pawar (his uncle) had been defamed at his age because of me”.

Enforcement Directorate officials have said cases against as many as 70 NCP leaders, including Ajit Pawar and his uncle, party chief Sharad Pawar, are open and ongoing.
“The case is open and we are preparing our grounds to summon those named in the FIR for questioning and no one will be spared,” an agency official told news agency IANS.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut alleged the BJP had used the corruption cases filed against Ajit Pawar to persuade him to split the party and offer support.
“When (Devendra) Fadnavis was the Chief Minister, he had said his (Ajit Pawar) place is in Arthur Road (jail). Was the ED investigation used to split the party (NCP)? And, will Cabinet meetings happen in Arthur Road jail now,” Mr. Raut asked.

The NCP’s apparent tie-up with the BJP also throws into focus money-laundering cases against party leaders like former Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and former state minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

Praful Patel had been questioned in connection with a probe into business deals involving national carrier Air India, while Mr. Bhujbal was arrested in March 2016 on charges of misusing his office; he is a former public works department minister.

Ajit Pawar’s elevation to the Deputy Chief Minister’s post also throws a spotlight on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ repeated assertions, made in 2013 and 2014, that the BJP would “never, never, never” have any alliance with the NCP.

“The BJP will never, never, never have any alliance with NCP. Rumors are motivated. We exposed their corruption in assembly. Others were silent,” Mr. Fadnavis tweeted on September 26, 2014.

The stretch of the Hyderabad Metro Rail between Hitec City and Raidurg is all set to be thrown open to commuters, as authorities have finished conducting all test runs and are ready for safety clearance.

Taking to Twitter, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director NVS Reddy said, “Hitec city-Raidurg metro stretch (1.5 km) is ready and Commission of Railway Safety (CMRS) inspection will be done soon. After this safety clearance, the stretch will be inaugurated by Minister for Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) KT Rama Rao and Transport Minister P Ajay Kumar in the morning of November 29.”

“Inauguration of Hitec city- Raidurg metro stretch will give major relief to a large number of employees working in this dense Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enable Services (ITES) area,” he added.

The stretch covers a crucial part in the heart of the city’s IT corridor, where several multinational corporations (MNCs) are located.

In March this year, the much-awaited metro service on the Ameerpet-Hitec City route was inaugurated, to cater to thousands of techies who travel to the IT cluster.

The inauguration also completed the 27 km Nagole-Hitec City corridor, one of three in the project. The 16-km Ameerpet-LB Nagar line was inaugurated in September last year, while the 30-km stretch between Uppal and Miyapur has been operational since November 2017.

Earlier this week, the metro authorities said that they would soon begin trial runs on Corridor II on the 10-km stretch between Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) via Parade Grounds. Once completed, the entire metro project would be thrown open to the public.

Billed as the largest Metro project in the world in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, the Rs 14,132 crore project is being built by infrastructure giant L&T.

Just days after an order by a local court, the Saidabad police in Hyderabad registered a case against All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Owaisi has now been booked under Sections 153(A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 153(B) (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 506 (Criminal Intimidation) of the IPC.

The case has been registered over alleged inflammatory remarks made by Owaisi at a public meeting on July 23 in Karimnagar town.

On December 22, 2012, Owaisi had addressed a massive rally in (then Andhra Pradesh’s) Nirmal town, He was arrested in January 2013 on charges of hate speech, and granted conditional bail after 40 days in prison.

Earlier this month, the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court had issued orders to the Saidabad police, to investigate a complaint by an advocate associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and register a case and file a status report by December 23.

The advocate had moved court, stating that the police were not investigating his complaint. In his petition, he also sought that Owaisi’s conditional bail be canceled.

Owaisi’s remarks earlier this year had also resulted in a similar complaint being filed in Karimnagar town at the time. The Karimnagar 3-Town police have also booked him under the same sections as the Saidabad police and is investigating the issue.

As a video of the recent speech also went viral, Akbaruddin Owaisi issued a statement on July 26, where he said, “My speech doesn’t constitute any offense; I have not contravened any provision of law.”

Akbaruddin Owaisi is the younger brother of Hyderabad MP and AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi.

He took up the agitation with his followers on Bandar Road. He (Parthasarathy) alleged that in the name of the sand mafia TDP is spewing venom on YSRCP leaders. This caused tension on Bandar Road. Parthasarathy said that Chandrababu is doing drams over sand and making false allegations against him. “Chandrababu is doing all this for political gain,” MLA asserted. He also asked the police for permission for Deeksha, but he could not get the approval.

Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, who backed Parthasarathy asked, had not the former CM Chandrababu who stole the sand for five years during the TDP, regime. He lambasts at Chandrababu for doing corrupt politics in the name of sand. Minister Peddireddy made clear that the floods have decreased in the rivers and 2 lakh tonnes would be made available in two days.

Officials have made all arrangements for the inauguration of the Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s prestigious Nadu-Nedu program. As per the scheme, 15 thousand 715 schools will be developed in the first phase of the program today. CM Jagan Reddy would arrive in Ongole at 10.10 in the morning. The PVR boys’ high school ground in Ongole has been ready for a public meeting today.

This has been the first time for JAgn Reddy to visit Ongole as a chief minister. Against this backdrop, the bureaucracy and the YSRCP cadre have made grand arrangements to welcome him. Massive gates and flexes have been installed throughout the city. Special parking areas have been set up for vehicles coming from all over the district. Chairs were set up so that 15 thousand people could sit in the House. Stalls have been set up exclusively for English Lab, Dr YSR Kanti Velugu and YSR Kishora Vikasam.
