On Women’s Day, Swapna Suresh slams Pinarayi Vijayan

On International Women’s Day, the prime accused in the gold smuggling and the Life Mission bribery cases – Swapna Suresh took to her Facebook to slam Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

“Happy women’s day! I am a woman fighting against the Hon’ble Chief Minister and his family for their illegal activities of selling us Keralites pathetically and for their selfish business empire, but unfortunately, no woman supports me publicly….hehe becoz this ruling party proves that they can give birth to crores of widows or crores of motherless children.

“Honourable CM Happy Women’s Day to you. Please sweeten your mouth tomorrow thinking you have defeated a woman unsuccessfully until now and I will celebrate ‘World Useless Men’s Day’ soon. History will repeat once again.”

Swapna has been going hammer and tongs against Vijayan and his family and even challenged him to file a defamation case or get her arrested for her outbursts.

She has been particularly harsh ever since Vijayan said inside and outside the Assembly that ‘he doesn’t know her’.

She then said she will come out with all evidence regarding their meetings at his office and official residence.

Her latest outbursts come a day after Vijayan’s closest aide — his assistant private secretary C.M. Raveendran — was let off after around 10 hours of questioning in the alleged bribery case of Life Mission by the Enforcement Directorate at Kochi. And, on Wednesday he appeared again before the ED officers.

Vijayan’s former principal secretary and now retired top IAS official M. Sivasankar is presently in jail in connection with the Life Mission case.

Sharmila detained in Hyderabad during protest on women’s day

Hyderabad Police on Wednesday detained YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) leader Y.S Sharmila when she staged a silent protest against atrocities on women.

Sharmila was leading the protest at the Rani Rudrama Devi statue located on the Tankbund road to commemorate International Women’s Day.

Talking to media persons, she said that Telangana has turned into a place filled with landmines for women under KCR’s rule. She further said the state now has the dubious record of registering the most number of rapes and kidnapping cases against women.

“The state has turned into a fill of land mines for women, planted in the form of crimes and atrocities. One never knows when they explode,” she said.

Sharmila stated that for Chief Minister KCR only his daughter represents women and she has put the women to shame and disgrace by being caught in a liquor scam.

Stating that women’s representation in KCR’s cabinet itself is dismal, she said Kavitha has no moral right to fight in Delhi on women’s representation because her father himself had not kept the word.

The YSRTP leader alleged that the BRS leaders are engaged in crimes against women. She said the constituency being represented by industries minister K. T. Rama Rao witnessed rapes against minors. “Hyderabad sees rapes in broad daylight. Dalit women are assaulted and killed in lockups but KCR won’t say a word. His assurances for women are fake,” she said.

She said even the Governor was not spared and foul language used against her by an MLC made way for his elevation as the government whip in the Legislative Council. “Even I was not spared as a woman and they hurled choicest abuses against me when I exposed their failures,” she said.

Sharmila wanted to know where was the Bharosa app flaunted by KTR. “I checked myself and it’s defunct. The State Women’s Commission is a dummy,” he said.

She called zero-interest loans, women’s business hubs, and industrial areas all fake promises. She said that even government schools and colleges have no toilet facilities for girl students.

TN is the safest state for women: CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that the state was the safest state for women in the country. He was delivering a talk at the Ethiraj college for women during the International Women’s Day celebrations.

He said that women are the most admired people in the world and added that the Dravidian movement has played a significant role in women’s empowerment.

Stalin said that the celebration of women’s day is most valuable and important for humanity and human rights. He added that by celebrating women, the nation was celebrated.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister praised Kannagi for questioning the Pandya king and added that later cultural invasion has led to such women refraining from making such statements.

Stalin said that the free bus concession is a right of every woman of the state and added that his government would ensure that women are supported by all means in the state. He also said that stringent action would be taken against anyone who insults women.

Archana Gautam’s father files case against Priyanka Gandhi’s secretary

Archana Gautam, Congress candidate in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and Bigg Boss-16 contestant, has taken her battle with Sandeep Singh, personal secretary of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to the next level.

Archana Gautam’s father, Gautam Buddha, has lodged a case against Sandeep Singh at Partapur police station in Meerut.

He has alleged that Sandeep Singh not only uttered casteist words to his daughter but also threatened to kill her.

Gautam Buddha said that his daughter Archana Gautam has been trying to meet Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for a long time, but Sandeep Singh was not allowing her to meet.

He said that Archana Gautam was called to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on February 26 by Sandeep Singh to participate in the Congress General Convention on the invitation of Priyanka Gandhi.

Archana Gautam asked for an appointment with Priyanka Gandhi, but Sandeep Singh refused and then misbehaved with her.

Recently, Archana Gautam had come live on Facebook where she made several allegations against Sandeep Singh.

In Facebook Live, Archana Gautam had also said that the entire Congress party is angry with Sandeep Singh.

Sandeep Singh does not even allow anyone to meet Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. She said that Singh had even threatened to put her in jail.

Archana’s father has also demanded security for the daughter, claiming a threat to her life.

The Meerut Police has now started an investigation in this matter after registering a case under Section 504, 506 of the IPC and SC ST Act.

‘Atiq Ahmad to be brought to UP next week’

Mafia don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad will be brought to Prayagraj from the Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad next week, a senior police official said.

“Immediately after Holi, we will initiate paperwork and get the necessary permission from the court after which Atiq will be brought to Prayagraj for interrogation in the Umesh Pal murder case,” he added.

Atiq has been identified as the master conspirator of the murder of Umesh Pal and two police guards.

“We will soon apply for a warrant B (production warrant) to the jail in Gujarat where Atiq is lodged. We are working on expediting the cases against him in the state,” said the official.

Atiq was shifted to Sabarmati jail in June 2019. The Supreme Court had, on April 22, 2019, ordered to shift him to a high-security jail in Gujarat after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault on a real estate businessman, Mohit Jaiswal, from the Deoria jail.

On December 28, 2018, Jaiswal filed an FIR stating that he was kidnapped from Lucknow and taken to a jail where he was assaulted by Atiq and his aides and forced to transfer his business to them.

The incident had taken place at Deoria jail in Uttar Pradesh.

Later, the case was handed over to CBI which filed a chargesheet on December 31, 2020, in the case and indicted Atiq and his son Umar along with others.

Meanwhile, the mystery over the two minor sons of Atiq has deepened after his wife Shaista Parveen filed an application at a Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court saying her two minor sons, Ahzaan and Abaan, are missing.

She said the two boys went missing after the Uttar Pradesh Police picked them up in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case and they have not been seen since.

The police had stated that the two minor sons were in a juvenile shelter home but Shaista said that the sons were not in the shelter home.

CJM judge Dinesh Kumar Gautam asked the child protection officer in Prayagraj and the station-in-charge of the Dhoomanganj Police Station, Rajesh Kumar Maurya, to submit a report on the ‘missing’ boys.

The hearing for this report will be held on March 10.

Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case, was shot by unidentified assailants outside his house in Prayagraj.

As many as 160 criminal cases have been lodged against Atiq Ahmad’s family members, according to Uttar Pradesh Police.

Atiq has been named in 100 cases, while his brother Ashraf has 52 cases, his wife Shaista Praveen has three, and sons Ali and Umar Ahmad have four and one cases, respectively, against them.

Ali is currently lodged in Naini Central Prison in Prayagraj, while Umar is in Lucknow jail. UP Police has announced a reward of Rs 2.5 lakhs for Atiq’s son Asad in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

Atiq’s minor sons, Ahzaan and Abaan, are in Class 12 and Class 9 respectively.

LS committee to hear oral evidence against Rahul in breach of privilege case

The oral evidence on the breach of privilege against Rahul Gandhi will be heard by the Lok Sabha Privilege Committee on Friday.

The Committee of Privileges has called BJP MP Nishikant Dubey to hear his case.

Dubey along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Jodhi had given notices of breach of privilege against Rahul Gandhi “for making a misleading, derogatory, unparliamentary and incriminatory statement during a discussion on the motion of thanks on President’s Address in the House on February 7 and a further request for expunction of the impugned statements.

However, sources close to Rahul Gandhi have insisted that he has replied to the notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The Privilege Committee directed BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who had filed the notice against Rahul Gandhi, to appear before it on March 10 and present his case.

Dubey had sent the notice claiming that Rahul Gandhi had leveled derogatory allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi without any evidence and facts during a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks on the President’s address.

Acting on the notice as per the laid down parliamentary convention and rules, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued the notice to Rahul Gandhi, asking him to reply by February 15.

For many years after Independence, there was no long term vision in health sector: PM

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday claimed that for several decades after Independence, there was a lack of an integrated approach and long-term vision in the health sector.

“For several decades after Independence, there was a lack of an integrated approach and a long-term vision in health. We have not kept healthcare restricted only to the health ministry, but have emphasized the whole of the government approach,” he said while addressing a webinar on “Health and Medical Research”.

It has been the endeavor of the Centre, to make medical treatment affordable in India, the Prime Minister added.

“That has been the thought behind providing free medical treatment of upto Rs 5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Under this, approximately Rs 80,000 crore, that would’ve been spent on medical treatments, were saved,” he said further.

For serious diseases, quality and modern health infrastructure in the country are important, the PM said.

The government’s focus is also on ensuring that people get testing facilities near their homes and there are better facilities for first aid, he added.

For this, he said, 1.5 lakh health and wellness centers are being prepared in the country, the prime minister informed.

Referring to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Prime Minister said that it showed that when such a crisis occurs, even developed systems of prosperous nations collapse.

“World is now much more focussed on health. But India’s approach is not restricted to healthcare, we’re also working on ensuring wellness,” he added.

“Corona also taught us that the supply chain has become a very important matter. When the pandemic was at its peak, for some countries even life-saving things like medicines, vaccines, and medical devices had become weapons,” the Prime Minister noted.

Reminding the audience that India helped many nations by providing vaccines to them, he said, “That’s why we have kept a vision before the world – ‘One Earth, One Health’ – holistic healthcare for everyone.”

Tipra Motha Party emerges as the credible voice of tribal communities

The influential tribal-based Tipra Motha Party (TMP), which has been demanding the elevation of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) into a full-fledged state and for the first time contested 42 seats on its own in the recently-held Assembly elections, has emerged as the second largest party securing 13 seats, all tribal reserved.

Headed by former royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman, the TMP, which came to the forefront before the TTAADC polls in April 2021, pushed the CPI-M and the Congress into third and fourth positions, respectively, in the elections.

The CPI-M, which governed Tripura for 35 years in two phases (1978 to 1988 and 1993 to 2018), won 11 seats in the February 16 elections, while the Congress, which also governed the state for many years, bagged three.

The two national parties failed to secure a single seat out of the 20 tribal reserved seats this time even as the tribal areas were the Left parties’ strongholds since Tripura became a full-fledged state in 1972.

The CPI-M had secured only two tribal reserved seats in the 2018 Assembly polls and the Congress drew blank in the last two polls.

In the February 16 polls, the CPI-M-led Left parties secured 26.80 percent votes, TMP got over 20 percent votes and the Congress, which contested the elections in seat-sharing arrangements with the Left parties, managed 8.56 percent votes.

The BJP secured 32 seats (38.97 percent votes), four seats less than 2018 elections and its ally bagged one seat (1.26 percent votes), down by seven seats from the previous polls.

Like Trinamool Congress, the TMP spoiled the electoral prospect of more than 15 CPI-M and Congress candidates and some of the BJP nominees, including Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Jishnu Dev Varma, who lost his Charilam seat to TMP candidate Subodh Deb Barma by a margin of 858 votes.

In the past five-and-a-half decades, over a dozen tribal-based parties in Tripura tried to play a crucial role in the state’s politics but due to their issue-based politics sans any ideology they became nonexistent after their issues were resolved or when they raised irrelevant demands.

In June 1967, the Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS) was formed as the first major tribal-based political party raising some tribal-centric demands including the creation of the tribal autonomous body.

The party first got four seats in the 1978 elections and in 1988 it was an ally of the Congress with both parties in alliance governing the state for five years (1988 to 1993) before the CPI-M-led Left Front government returned to power after five years.

TMP’s rapid success caused a change in the political spectrum of Tripura.

The party, since 2021, has been demanding the elevation of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas by granting a ‘Greater Tipraland State’ or a separate state under Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution.

The ruling BJP, CPI-M-led Left parties, Congress, and the Trinamool Congress have been strongly opposing the demand of the TMP. The party in support of its demands organized agitations both in the state and in the national capital.

All the parties in Tripura — BJP, CPI-M, Congress, and Trinamool Congress — have also tried to forge a pre-poll alliance with TMP for the February 16 Assembly polls to get a majority of the 20 vital tribal reserve seats, but it refused the proposals of these parties.

The demand for a Greater Tipraland was raised by the TMP after the BJP ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) got massive support for its separate state demand from the indigenous tribals ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections.

Since April 2021, TMP has been ruling the politically-important 30-member TTAADC, which has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq km area and is home to over 12,16,000 people, of which around 84 percent are tribals, making the autonomous council a mini-Assembly.

The TTAADC was formed in 1985 under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect and safeguard the political, economic, and cultural interests of the tribals, who constitute one-third of the state’s four million population.

Political commentator Sanjib Deb said that tribal-based political parties in Tripura were formed on the basis of certain issues and certain demands.

“These tribal parties have no ideology. According to our experience over the years, they become nonexistent after their issues were resolved or when they raised such demands which are practically not possible to implement,” Deb told IANS.

He said that with the emergence of TMP a third political spectrum emerged in state politics with the new tribal-based party overwhelmingly dominating the tribal vote bank, thrashing the other political parties, especially the Left parties, who have had strongholds among the tribals since 1952.

“Earlier, the politics of Tripura was dominated by the Left and non-Left parties. Now the new entrant TIPRA is taking the vote share, mostly tribal votes, of the three national parties — BJP, CPI-M, and the Congress,” Deb pointed out.

He said that most times the tribal-based parties have to ally with the national parties despite their disputes on various issues.

‘Dharma-Dhamma’ concept has been voice of Indian consciousness: Prez Murmu

President Draupadi Murmu said that understanding the cause of the suffering of humanity and showing the way to remove that suffering is the specialty of humanism of the past, which has become more important in today’s era.

Murmu made this statement while addressing the gathering, including foreign delegates on the inaugural day of the seventh International Dharma-Dhamma Conference organized in Madhya Pradesh’s state capital Bhopal on Friday.

She asserted that the concept of ‘Dharma-Dhamma’ has been the basic voice of Indian consciousness.

“It is said in our tradition that the one who holds everyone, is religion. The entire humanity rests on the foundation stone of religion,” Murmu said, adding that the development of individuals and society with the spirit of friendship, compassion, and non-violence, etc. has been the main message of humanism of the East.

Murmu also said that personal conduct and social order based on morality is the practical form of earlier humanism. It has been considered the duty of every person to preserve and strengthen this system based on morality.

“Prayer has been a part of our life. This is the essence of humanism of the past and also the biggest need of today’s era,” she added.

Murmu wished that the entire world community should be benefitted from the humanism of the East.

Meanwhile, she congratulated the Madhya Pradesh government and India Foundation for organizing the ‘Dharma-Dhamma’ conference.

“In India, religion has occupied a central place in the social system and political activities since ancient times. The deep impact of ‘Dharma-Dhamma’ is clearly visible in the democratic system we adopted after independence. This is clearly reflected in our national symbols. Representatives from various countries are participating in the International Dharma-Dhamma Conference, which symbolizes the global appeal of the idea of Dharma-Dhamma,” Murmu said while addressing the inaugural session of the event.

The three-day conference under the theme ‘Eastern Humanism for the New Era’ began on Friday at Bhopal’s Kushabhau Thakre auditorium in a bid to bring together religious, political, and thought leaders from Dharma-Dhamma traditions to ponder over building a philosophical framework for the emerging new world order.

‘Art of listening is powerful’: Rahul Gandhi at Cambridge University

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi while speaking to MBA students at the Cambridge Judge Business School on the subject of “Learning to Listen in the 21st Century”, said that people around the world need to find a way of listening compassionately to new concerns in the 21st century that have been transformed by the shift of production away from democratic countries and toward China.

“The art of listening” when done consistently and diligently is “very powerful,” he added.

He said the decline in recent decades of manufacturing in democratic countries, including India and the US, as production has shifted to China, has produced mass inequality and associated anger that need urgent attention and dialogue.

“We simply cannot afford a planet that doesn’t produce under-democratic systems,” he told the MBA students.

“So we need new thinking about how you produce in a democratic environment compared to a coercive environment”, and a “negotiation about this”.

Rahul was introduced to the MBA audience by Kamal Munir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cambridge and Professor of Strategy and Policy at the Cambridge Judge Business School, who said the speaker comes from a “long lineage of global leaders”.

Gandhi’s lecture was divided into three parts, starting with an outline of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, a 4,081-km walk he led through 14 Indian states from September 2022 to January 2023 to draw attention to “prejudice, unemployment and growing inequality in India”.

The second part of the lecture focussed on the “two divergent perspectives” of the US and China since World War II and especially since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

The former Congress President said that in addition to shedding manufacturing jobs, the US had become less open after September 11, 2001, while China “idolises harmony” through organization around the Chinese Communist Party.

The final aspect of his lecture was around the theme of “Imperative for a Global Conversation”, in which he knitted the themes together in a call for a new type of receptiveness to various viewpoints — explaining that a ‘yatra’ is a journey or pilgrimage in which people “shut themselves down so they can listen to others”.

Karnataka Congress denounces the Modi’s Meet; Kannadiags clearly realize Frauds of modi.

Karnataka Congress fired on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to visit the state. He has given statements for the duplicity of state people. Other parties and Congress State President D.K. Shivakumar arraigned on the PM with different styles.

Siddaramaiah attacked Modi and said that While the state had in the worst situation with floods Modi did give any help to the people and Modi was not given any statement about the compensation for people.

Remembering the bank merger, He said that state banks had merged with other banks, and Modi have to take responsibility.

Affiliation banks were 70,000 employees and deposited worth almost Rs 317 lakh crore. They offered jobs to local Kannada people. After the combination of the banks, where did the jobs offered to Kannada students? was this not fraud much for kannada?

Congress pledges laws to rein in hate crimes

The Congress, in its draft political resolution, on Saturday pledged to bring in laws to prevent hate crimes in the country, if voted to power.

This comes against the backdrop of rising incidents of hate crimes and lynching, the latest being the burning alive of two people in Rajasthan.

The resolution said, “In the last eight-and-a-half years under the BJP Government, the politics of hate has assumed alarming proportions and religious polarisation has reached its peak. Hate crimes and atrocities have increased manifold.

“Vigilante right-wing groups incite violence on various trivial issues. These groups operate with impunity and have started acting like police, spreading anarchy and fear. This fear in the minds of minorities is the aim of the BJP/RSS regime.”

During the course of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, it was clear that the majority of Indians yearn for love, peace, and harmony, it added.

The Congress said it believes in our civilizational principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means “The World Is One Family”. Minorities form about a
fifth of India’s population. Neglecting, marginalizing, and alienating them is
inhuman, and hits at the unity and integrity of India.

“The culture of hatred nurtured and propagated by BJP, RSS and their acolytes violates the tenets of all religions. We need to create a sense of security among each and every Indian, regardless of their region, religion, caste, class or gender,” it further said.

It also said that crimes against weaker sections of society have also increased. Atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SCs) have increased by 1.2 percent in 2021, according to the NCRB. Violence against Dalit and Adivasi women has also risen. Cases of rape against SC women, including shockingly, minors, account for 7.64 percent and ST women account for 15 percent of the total cases reported.

“Congress will pass a new law to prevent and punish hate crimes,” it concluded.

After full-blown chaos, MCD’s Standing Committee to be re-elected on Monday

Following ruckus for the third straight day, the House of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was on Friday adjourned till Monday morning with Mayor Shelly Oberoi announcing that re-election to pick the Standing Committee members will be held at 11 am on February 27.

All hell broke loose on Friday after Oberoi stalled the recounting of votes for electing the members of the all-powerful MCD Standing Committee following objections raised by AAP.

It was free for all in the MCD House with BJP and AAP councilors trading blows at each other, showing scant disregard for the sanctity of the House.

Protesting against the Mayor’s decision to stall the recounting process, BJP councilors started breaking mikes, tearing ballot papers, and even damaging the polling booths amid sloganeering.

“The poll to elect the members of the Standing Committee will be held on February 27,” Oberoi said amid sloganeering by councilors from both sides in the House.

“Today is a most unfortunate day. The House’s reputation was not taken care of. Before the Standing Committee election, we heard BJP’s demands and made sure that they were met. But when the counting started and they (BJP) realized that they are losing, BJP councilors created a ruckus,” Oberoi said while addressing the media after the House was adjourned.

“They have not just targeted me, but other women councilors were also targeted. They are not just disrespecting the House, but the Chair of the Mayor too. Today, I want to appeal to the BJP to accept defeat,” said Oberoi.

AAP leader Atishi said, “I appeal to the BJP to accept the mandate of the people of Delhi. The people have thrown them away and let AAP run the show. If the Mayor is not safe, how can the other women feel safe?”

On BJP’s allegations, Atishi showed a video and said, “You can see all the videos chronologically and you’ll see who started the ruckus. AAP councilors who were standing up, I was trying to back them off. After this presser, we will go to the Kamla Market police station and file an FIR against the BJP for the ‘murder attempt’ on a women councilor of AAP.”

Oberoi later tweeted: “Requested an urgent appointment with the @DelhiPolice Commissioner tomorrow regarding the attack on me by BJP Councillors in the MCD House.”

Earlier, Oberoi had said while stalling the recounting process that one party is ready for the process, while the other is not.

“So I am stopping the recounting process,” Oberoi said.

PM Modi terms Yediyurappa’s farewell speech ‘inspirational’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the spirit and farewell speech of former chief minister and BJP Central Parliamentary Committee Member B.S Yediyurappa in the Karnataka Assembly.

“Being a karyakarta (active member) of BJP, I felt that this speech (by Yediyurappa) is inspirational. The speech imbibes the ethics of the party. This will definitely give inspiration to other party workers,” Narendra Modi stated on his social media handle.

He also shared the post by BJP Karnataka’s social media handle containing Yediyurappa’s speech.

On February 22, the former CM declared on the floor of the House that he will never contest elections in the future and that this would be his last session. “This is my last speech. You can also consider this as my farewell speech. I have already declared that I won’t contest elections. I will not come back to this session,” an emotional Yediyurappa reiterated.

He was participating in the discussion on the budget and stated that in political circles, opposition parties are claiming that Yediyurappa is sidelined and neglected. “I have not been neglected either by the BJP or by the Prime Minister,” he maintained.

The party has given him good opportunities, he asserted, adding that he will work for the party until his last breath. “BJP has also given me an opportunity to become Chief Minister four times. It is not possible to silence Yediyurappa. We will come back to power,” he stated.

BJP is coming to power in the state for sure, he said. “I will take up a state-wide tour. After this session, I will go across Karnataka. I will have to convey to the people the schemes of the BJP. The ruling BJP government has given more programs than any other government,” Yediyurappa stated.

Goa CM welcomes Mhadei PRAWAH, opposition terms it ‘farce’

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has welcomed the union cabinet’s decision to approve the creation of Mhadei PRAWAH (Mhadei Water Authority). However, the opposition called it a gimmick to divert attention.

“I thank the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the establishment of the PRAWAH in the cabinet meeting. This has been one of our primary demands and we wholeheartedly welcome the decision,” Sawant said.

Sawant said that the establishment of the authority will help in preventing the illegal diversion of water. “It also reaffirms the fact that the Centre will not allow any injustice on Goa,” he said.

Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had tweeted “PM Sh. @narendramodi led cabinet today has approved the creation of Mahadayi PRAWAH. This will enable the compliance and implementation of the award & decisions of the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal.”

“It will also aid in building mutual trust and understanding among party states Goa, Karnataka & Maharashtra thereby ensuring the right use of water resources of this region for its overall development.”Shekhawat further said.

However, Congress Goa chief Amit Patkar reacting to the new development said that it is a move of the BJP to give all powers to authority controlled by the central government.

“With the creation of Mhadei PRAWAH Authority, this BJP government is only willing to give all powers and control to an Authority controlled by the Central government, where every Goan will suffer and they will sell and destroy our state sitting in Delhi,” Patkar said.

“By this move, the Goa government has accepted that there will be an illegal diversion of Mhadei and the setting up of Authority is a farce only meant to deviate, Goans who are trying to stop the diversion,” Patkar said.

Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai said that while Karnataka is diverting water from Mhadei, the central government is diverting attention. “Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is complicit in both. No Mhadei Water Authority will distract us from our non-negotiable demand. Government should withdraw permission given to the Detailed Project Report of Karnataka. All else you do is a smokescreen designed to buy time and delay justice to Goa,” Sardesai said.

Ever since Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that the Centre has cleared the much-disputed Kalasa-Banduri dam project in his state, people have started holding public meetings against the Central government’s decision.

Goa and Karnataka are currently battling out a dispute over the Kalasa-Banduri dam project across the water of the Mhadei river at a central tribunal.

Mhadei originates in Karnataka and meets the Arabian Sea in Panaji. While the river traverses 28.8 km in Karnataka, it is 81.2 km in length in Goa.

Karnataka plans to construct dams on the river, aimed at diverting the water into its water-starved Malaprabha basin in North Karnataka.
