We have firepower to break into top 5 in next 2 years, says Savita

0

Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita has stated that the team is aiming to enter the top five of the FIH Rankings in the next two years.

The Indian eves recorded excellent victories at the FIH Series Finals and the FIH Olympic Qualifiers last year and their efforts during the course of 2019 resulted in better places in the FIH rankings as well, with the side moving to the ninth position.

“We have certainly grown as a team in the last three-four years and we have all our bases covered. We have worked with some of the best coaches from around the world and therefore we have been able to compete against the top sides in the recent past,” said Savita.

“With continued support from Hockey India and SAI, we certainly have the firepower to break into the top five of the FIH Rankings in the next two years,” she added.

The veteran goalkeeper, who hails from Sirsa, Haryana, also expressed that a defined structure in Indian hockey has been one of the main reasons behind India’s success in the recent past.

“Good performances don’t come overnight. In order to attain good results, meticulous planning and ensuring that our team is evolving day by day are the key factors,” said the goalkeeper.

“We have certainly worked hard for our performances; however, I would credit Hockey India for implementing a good structure, wherein we are working with good coaches, our physical fitness schedules are being monitored and we are following a strict diet as well.

“Hockey India has planned the national coaching camps and tournaments very well in the last few years which has helped the players to get better at their game,” she added.

The last few months have been very difficult for everyone around the world because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The team has pressed the reset button and is currently on its way back to the form they were in March this year.

“It was definitely tough to be away from the game for a long time. But now that we have resumed sports activities and gradually moving forward, I have no doubt that we will reach our peak form in good time,” said Savita.

“Hockey India and SAI have devised all the processes for the resumption of sports activities at the Sports Authority of India campus in Bengaluru. We just have to follow all the guidelines properly and carry out our activities with dedication for the best results.”

It is digital media which needs regulations: Centre to SC

0

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has informed the Supreme Court that if it is keen to begin an exercise to regulate media, then it should be the digital media instead of mainstream media, as it has wider viewership and also has the potential to turn viral.

The Ministry in an affidavit in the Supreme Court said while in a mainstream media (whether electronic or print), the publication or telecast is a one-time act, the digital media has the faster reach to a wider range of readership and has the potential to become viral because of several electronic applications like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook.

“Considering the serious impact and the potential, it is desirable that if this Court decides to undertake the exercise, it should first be undertaken with regard to digital media as there already exist sufficient framework and judicial pronouncements with regard to electronic media and print media,” said the affidavit filed in connection with the Sudarshan TV case.

“The media includes mainstream electronic media, mainstream print media as well as a parallel media namely digital print media and digital web-based news portal and YouTube channels as well as ‘Over The Top’ platforms (OTTs),” said the Ministry in an affidavit.

A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, K.M. Joseph and Indu Malhotra have stayed the broadcast of Sudarshan TV program UPSC Jihad, until further orders.

The apex court has also indicated the setting up of a five-member committee, including people of commendable stature without having any politically divisive orientation, to provide standards for electronic media.

In this aspect, the Ministry in the affidavit said the present petition is concerned with balancing between the journalist’s freedom and responsible journalism, which is a field already occupied either by the statutory provisions made by Parliament or by the judgments of the Supreme Court.

“…In view of the issue has already received the attention of the Parliament, as well as, of this Court, the present petition be confined to only one channel namely Sudarshan T.V. and this Court may not undertake the exercise of laying down any further guidelines with or without the appointment of an Amicus or a Committee of persons as Amicus,” said the affidavit.

The top court will continue hearing the matter on Thursday.

Djokovic, Nadal reach third round of Italian Open

0

Top seed Novak Djokovic and defending champion Rafael Nadal reached the third round of the Italian Open after securing respective wins in their second-round matches of the ongoing tournament.

On Wednesday, Djokovic dispatched Italian wild card entry Salvatore Caruso 6-3, 6-2 to continue with his quest for a fifth Rome title and set up a third-round against countryman Filip Krajinovic.

“It was a very good test for me. I’m very pleased with the way I handled myself in important moments,” said Djokovic as per the ATP Tour website. “I was in control of the match. I served well when I needed to come up with a big serve and moved well. I constructed the points as the clay courts demand because it’s obviously a completely different surface in terms of building the point tactically. Everything went well. I’m very pleased.”

On the other hand, Nadal made a welcome return to the ATP Tour as he outclassed fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 6-1 in his first tour-level match for 200 days.

“It’s good to be back on the Tour,” said Nadal, in an on-court interview. “I miss the crowds. I played a good match, maybe he was a little bit tired after all his matches in New York. It was a perfect start for me. It was solid, (and I hit) good shots on the forehand and backhand. I didn’t expect to play that well.”

The Spaniard will next play No. 13 seed Milos Raonic or Dusan Lajovic in the third round.

Apple developers in a bind over sudden iOS 14 release

0

The Apple developer community were busy scrambling to give finishing touches to their apps ahead of a major Apple OS release and the iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 were made available to the consumers on Wednesday, just a day after announcing new products.

The sudden iOS 14 launch, in absence of a new iPhone hardware, left several Apple developers perplexed as they claimed the tech giant did not give them enough time to iron out last-minute changes in the new OS, reports The Verge.

“I get how whiny this sounds, but I think this is the most negative I’ve felt after an Apple event,” Dark Noise app developer Charlie Chapman tweeted.

“I don’t push myself that hard, but I did do a lot of work to prepare to hit the ‘day one’ release for iOS 14.”

Apple announced the new software at its developer conference WWDC in June and released the first developer beta on the same day.

“Most developers will have spent the months since adding new iOS 14 features and making sure their apps are compatible with the new software,” the report added.

iOS betas change frequently on the way to the main release and at times, there are new features that are realigned in response to bugs.

One such example was posted on Twitter by developer Peter Steinberger, who noted that Apple has removed support for a new API with iOS 14’s GM release after it appeared in the beta releases.

“So if your app had been using [the new API] or you were releasing a framework using that, all of a sudden… you can’t. That’s it, it’s gone, you’ve got to replace it,” iOS developer Rhys Morgan was quoted as saying.

The Apple users’ community, however, welcomes the new OS update.

Apple on Wednesday brought iOS 14 as a free software update to iPhone 6s and later, delivering a major push to the Home Screen with beautifully redesigned widgets and the App Library, new ways to use apps with App Clips, and powerful updates to Messages.

New widgets present timely information at a glance and can be added in different sizes on any Home Screen page.

At the end of the Home, Screen pages is the App Library that makes it easier for users to get to all of their apps with a simple, easy-to-navigate view.

With Picture-in-Picture support, iPhone users can now watch a video or make a FaceTime call while using another app.

Users can pin now conversations to the top of their messages list, easily keep up with lively group threads through mentions and inline replies, and further

Developers can now offer users the option to upgrade their existing accounts to Sign in with Apple.

Maxwell, Carey power Australia to ODI series-win over England

0

Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey scored brilliant centuries as Australia won an exciting final ODI against England and took the three-match series 2-1 at the Old Trafford.

Chasing 303 on Wednesday evening, Australia was almost down and out of the game after losing five wickets for mere 73 runs. However, Maxwell (108) and Carey (106) shared a massive 212-run stand to help the visitors register a three-wicket win. The victory also ended a five-year streak in which England have not lost a home ODI series, with Australia also the last side to beat them, back in September 2015.

Earlier asked to bowl, the Aaron-Finch led side started the game in the best possible way, with Mitchell Starc removing Jason Roy and Joe Root with the first two balls of the match.

Jonny Bairstow, however, stood at one end even though England found themselves reeling at 96/4 following the wickets of Eoin Morgan (23) and Jos Buttler (8). Sam Billings, who came in next, shared a 114-run stand with Bairstow and the hosts looked to set up a big target before Billings top-edged a reverse-sweep shortly after reaching his fifty. Bairstow also fell just a few overs later having faced 126 balls for his 112, the opener’s longest innings in the format.

However, just like the second ODI, England’s lower order contributed with crucial runs as Chris Woakes scored an unbeaten 39-ball 53* to boost the hosts to 302/7.

Australia didn’t have the best of starts either and they lost Finch (12) and Marcus Stoinis (4) with just 31 runs on the board. The wickets slowed the innings down, and part-timer Joe Root’s introduction after the first Powerplay further slowed down the chase as he claimed the wickets of David Warner (24) and Mitchell Marsh (2) before Marnus Labuschagne was run out by Billings for 20 to leave the visitors in all sorts of trouble at 73/5.

Carey and Maxwell though proved to be their saviors as they both played positively and scored runs quickly to bring Australia back into contention. Maxwell in particular was destructive as he struck seven sixes in his 108.

Just when Australia looked to win, a late surge from England once again threatened to take the game away, as Maxwell and Carey fell in the 48th and 49th overs respectively, leaving Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins needing to take Adil Rashid’s last over for 10.

However, Starc scored a six on the first ball of the over and then completed the chase with a sweep for four with two balls to spare.

Maxwell was adjudged the Player of the Match as well as the Player of the Series.

Brief scores: England 302/7 (Jonny Bairstow 112, Sam Billings 57; Adam Zampa 3/51) lose to Australia 305/7 (Glenn Maxwell 108, Alex Carey 106; Chris Woakes 2/46) by three wickets.

A teacher who led a hockey revolution among tribals in Jharkhand

0

A government-aided minority school teacher in Jharkhand epitomizes the saying ‘where there is a will, there is a way’.

Benedict Kujur has trained a number of girls and boys who went on to represent India in the national hockey team.

Kujur never led the odds pitted against him daunt him. He was posted as a teacher and went on to become the principal at a minority-run primary school in Karangaguri village of Jharkhand’s Simdega district.

The village is located in a remote area where common people are deprived of even basic amenities.

The school was initially till fifth class and later it was extended to class eight.

“In 2003, when I was posted to Karangaguri village, I decided to organize sports. Initially, the students were not interested and even the parents were indifferent. I called a meeting of parents and tried to create awareness about sports,” Kujur told IANS.

He said, “After many attempts, the parents agreed to let their wards participate in sports. I made the sports class mandatory for everyone. Hockey was the only option. We started hockey training for students. Skill development among students was my agenda. While imparting them the skills, we faced an enormous resource crunch,” he says.

But he found ways to transcend all difficulties. The hockey sticks were made of bamboo. Even a hockey ball wasn’t available. A ‘Sharifa’ fruit came in handy as a ball. Later a ball made of bamboo was used in the training sessions.

The biggest problem was skill development. “We used to hold two sessions besides mandatory classes in the school. The first session for training was in the morning and the second in the evening. While getting involved in skill development, we focused on exercises. Students were asked to run on river sand beds and even climb hills. As the area is really backward, the proper diet was not available,” said Kujur.

In a short period, the school became a nursery for hockey talent. Many players trained at this school have played at the district and state levels. Most of those who played in the national team were women.

Now the school is getting assistance from many NGOs and other benefactors. Now hockey sticks and hockey balls are available for students.

The girls who went on to play at the national and international levels include Beauty Dundung, Sushma Kumari, Alka Dundung, Deepika Soreng, and Pink Ekka.

Kujur was transferred to Jaldega in 2016. Till then the school had become a hockey powerhouse.

Beauty Dundung, who played for India in 2019 appreciates the contribution of Benedict Kujur in her career. “It was mandatory for us to bring hockey sticks. When we failed to go with hockey sticks then we were scolded by Principal sir. We used to play with bamboo sticks in school. I have played many matches against many countries, including Australia. The skills imparted by Sir help us in international hockey as well,” Dundung told IANS.

Appreciating his work, Manoj Kumar, Secretary of Simdega hockey Association, said “70 percent of Jharkhand’s hockey players come from the school which was trained by the Benedict Kujur. Six players have played at the international level. The school provides basic skill training to students for hockey who later find it easy to play anywhere.”

Jharkhand has a rich history of producing hockey champions. Even iconic player Jaipal Singh Munda belonged to Jharkhand.

100 Facebook employees to test future AR glasses on campus

0

In an effort to build the first generation of wearable Augmented Reality (AR) like the way Google Glass once attempted, Facebook has launched a research project called Aria with 100 participants, to begin with.

As part of the project within the Facebook Reality Labs, the social network has built a research device that will help understand how to build the software and hardware necessary for AR glasses.

“The Project Aria glasses are not a consumer product, nor are they a prototype. They won’t display any information on the inside of the lens, and research participants cannot view or listen to the raw data captured by the device,” the company announced during its virtual ‘Facebook Connect’ conference on Wednesday.

As a research device, the glasses will use sensors to capture video and audio from the wearer’s point of view, as well as eye movement and location data to help engineers and programmers figure out how AR can work in practice.

“The glasses will encrypt, compress, and store data until it’s uploaded to our separate, designated back-end storage systems”.

Facebook announced a pilot programme with Carnegie Mellon University’s Cognitive Assistance Laboratory to build 3D maps of museums and airports that will have multiple applications, including helping people with visual impairments better navigate their surroundings.

Facebook said it will not release the Aria device to the general public and it won’t be available for sale.

“Starting in September, it will be made available to a limited group of Facebook employees and contractors in the US, trained in both where and when to use the device, and where and when not to,” the company said.

The initial batch of research participants will be limited to about 100 Facebook employees and contractors, primarily located in the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle.

All participants will first undergo training to learn where and when they should collect data. And they won’t be able to access the data they collect.

“All devices will display a prominent white light that indicates when data is being collected. All devices will have a physical mute button that will stop collecting data when pressed,” Facebook said.

Project Aria research participants will record in Facebook offices, wearers’ private homes, and public spaces. They won’t record in venues such as stores or restaurants without written consent from such venues.

“Recording is never permitted in sensitive areas like restrooms, prayer rooms, locker rooms, or insensitive meetings and other private situations — and it is only allowed in the homes of wearers with consent from all members of the household”.

As with any mapping data, the security of recorded data is paramount.

Facebook said it will keep Project Aria data secure by using encryption and a secure ingestion system to upload the data from the device to Facebook back-end storage systems.

“The research glasses do not use facial recognition identification technology, and we don’t use this data to inform the ads people see across Facebook products”.

Project Aria will also provide the first-person perspective data necessary to build LiveMaps — the virtual 3D map needed to fulfill the potential of AR — and train a personalized assistant that can one day help people sense and understand the world, the company said.

UP Police arrests 3, seize over 30 kg charas

0

The Muzaffarnagar Police have busted an international drug trafficking racket with the arrest of three men from Muzaffarnagar’s Budhana town.

The accused have been identified as Zahir, Sajan Sharma, both natives of Bihar, and Islam, a resident of Budhana. They were arrested on the intervening night of Tuesday/Wednesday and 30.5 kg of charas, worth Rs seven lakh, was seized from their possession, police said.

Superintendent of Police (rural) Nepal Singh told reporters that the three men were intercepted by a police team during checking and drugs were seized from them.

During interrogation, it was found that the accused used to supply drugs, which were smuggled in from Nepal, in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi.

A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against the accused, the police said.

Villagers build bridge for SSB troops near UP-Nepal border

0

A group of villagers in Pilibhit has built a bamboo bridge for the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) troopers, about 200 meters from the Uttar Pradesh-Nepal border.

The 25-meter-long and 1.2-meter-wide bamboo bridge on a deep-water channel has been built by the Bamanpur Bhagirath village head, Gurdev Singh, with assistance from the locals.

Ajay Kumar, Commandant, SSB’s 49th Battalion, said: “A bridge was urgently needed for the frequent, prompt and unhindered movement of SSB patrolling pickets, especially during the night.

“The bridge will assist us in keeping an eye on any encroachment from the Nepalese side into the Indian territory as was reported in June this year.”

He added that his Nepalese counterpart from the Armed Police Force (APF) had given consent for the construction before the work started.

The construction of the bridge was initiated on September 10 and it was completed in just five days at a cost of merely Rs 50,000 on the water channel known as Sutra drain.

As the village panchayat had no provision for the construction, the locals were encouraged to contribute.

The money was contributed by villagers. The bridge holds importance as it provides a vantage point to the troopers patrolling the border, and particularly after a row over the construction of a road between pillars 38 and 39 by the Nepalese side.

The road construction work was, however, halted after Indian authorities took up the matter with their Nepalese counterparts, but the SSB is keeping a tight vigil to ensure the construction work does not resume in any manner.

“The road construction work was suspended until the time joint survey teams of the two countries demarcate the territories. Till then, we have to ensure that no violation of the status quo takes place. Thus, the bamboo bridge will prove advantageous to us in serving our objective,” said Kumar.

Puranpur block development officer Neeraj Dube said: “The bridge was built by village head Gurdev Singh for the SSB’s 49th Battalion, but it would also facilitate village farmers to have easy access to their farms – around 75 to 80 acres – situated close to the porous border on the other side of the drain.”

Dell plans lay offs amid Covid-19 uncertainty: Report

0

Dell Technologies is reportedly planning to lay off an unspecified number of employees owing to the declining growth in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic — a move that may impact its workforce in India where the company has a sizeable employee strength out of its over 165,000 global workforces.

According to a report in UK-based Data Center Dynamics on Tuesday, Dell Technologies’ Chief Operation Officer Jeff Clarke informed the upcoming job cuts in a quarterly all-hands meeting.

“We’re also evaluating our business to make sure we have the right number of team members in the right roles and in areas where customers need us most,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.

“And, we’re addressing our cost structure to make sure we’re as competitive as we should be now and for future opportunities. While we do this type of organizational review regularly, and while it always results in some job loss or restructuring, we recognize that there is nothing routine about today’s environment.”

In an open letter to staff, last month, CEO and Founder Michael Dell warned that there would be no return to pre-pandemic norms for the foreseeable future.

In May, Dell said it would be cut costs, freeze pay raises, and “hiring for the rest of the fiscal year, as well as discontinuing contributions to employees’ 401(k) retirement plans under a matching program”.

In the same month, Arvind Krishna-led tech giant IBM joined the league of companies who started firing employees in tough Covid-19 times.

“Recognizing the unique and difficult situation this business decision may create for some of our employees, IBM is offering subsidized medical coverage to all affected US employees through June 2021,” said a company spokesperson.

IBM, however, did not disclose how many workers are affected but media reports said thousands of employees were set to lose jobs in at least five states of the US.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said on Wednesday that the border checkpoints between Thailand and Myanmar are temporarily sealed in an attempt to curb possible Covid-19 infections and drug trafficking.

Wongsuwan said that as the region is experiencing economic woes triggered by the pandemic, many were tempted to make big bucks by trafficking drugs into Thailand, then destined to a third country, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Thai authorities have seized 28 million speed pills and 428 kg of crystal meth last month,” said Defence Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanit.

“Narcotics were smuggled from neighboring countries through northern and western provinces to Thailand’s central region.”

Tantrawanit said that from January 1 to August 31, officials arrested 179,050 drug suspects and seized 143 million methamphetamine pills and 5.4 tons of crystal meth.

With regards to sealing the border between Thailand and Myanmar, Wongsuwan said traders can still transport their goods and placed them at the collection point at the border, without the need for physical contact.
