Cloud firm NetApp to lay off 5.5% workforce amid Covid-19

0

California-headquartered global Cloud data services company NetApp is trimming its workforce by about 5.5 percent amid the Covid-19 pandemic, The Register reported.

Most of the affected employees are likely to be part of marketing staff and engineers and developers acquired with all-flash array vendor SolidFire in 2015, said the report on Wednesday.

The report comes ahead of the company announcement of quarterly results on Wednesday.

NetApp which currently has about 11,000 employees is “realigning resources and investments” in a bid to “position the company for long-term success,” the enterprise IT supplier told The Register in a statement.

“We continue to sharpen our focus on markets where we have both a significant presence and clear competitive advantage, specifically with our storage software and systems and cloud data services,” the statement added.

NetApp on May 27 reported financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2020, which ended on April 24.

For the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2020, the company reported net revenues of $1.40 billion, compared to $1.59 billion in the same period last year.

In its outlook for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2021, the company said that net revenues are expected to be in the range of $1.090 billion to $1.240 billion.

Trump welcomes Indian as new US citizen at WH rite

0

In a show of his support for legal immigration, US President Donald Trump dramatically welcomed an Indian software developer to “the great American family of citizens” in a White House ceremony during the Republican National Convention.

He introduced Sundari Narayanan “a talented software developer” who is a “phenomenal success” after she was sworn-in as a citizen on Tuesday.

Trump said that Narayanan had been in the US for 13 years and she and her husband have “two beautiful, wonderful children”.

Turning to her, he asked, “They are the apple of your life, right?” She nodded, “Yes.”

Clad in a bright pink sari with bright gold border, she added a dash of color to the ceremony in which Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf administered the oath of office to her and to four others, including a hijab-wearing veterinarian from Sudan. The others were from Bolivia, Lebanon, and Ghana.

They showed the changing face of America, a multicultural amalgam with non-White immigrants of different religions from around the world being the majority of immigrants.

Criticized by Democrats and immigration activists who conflate legal and illegal immigrants and cite Trump’s opposition to illegal migration to assert that he is anti-immigrant, the president was using the ceremony to emphasize the difference and show his support for legal immigration.

“You followed the rules, you obeyed the laws, you learned your history, embraced our values, and proved yourselves to be men and women of the highest integrity,” he said underlining they are coming to the US legally and following the rules for getting citizenship.

He said that they followed the laws although it was not easy and they went through a lot to get citizenship, the “priceless possession in the world”.

Later in the convention session, another immigrant took the stage to praise Trump and ask for to re-elect him.

That was Trump’s wife Melania, who immigrated from Slovenia.

She recalled that she had studied for the citizenship test and became a citizen through “hard work and determination”.

Trump has taken a hardline on illegal immigration, building a wall on the southern border to stop migrants and deporting illegal immigrants, especially those with criminal backgrounds. He has also temporarily stopped the granting of green cards – or immigrant visas – and H1-B professional work visas, most of which goes to India.

But he has also proposed a reform of the immigration to make it merit-based and to break the long waits for it, and changing the way the H1-B visas are granted.

During the presidential election campaign, Trump and his supporters have made illegal immigration a key issue as they had also in 2016 and accused Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden of advocating a policy of open borders.

Australian Covid-19 vaccine yields positive pre-clinical results

0

An Australian-developed Covid-19 vaccine has shown promising results in pre-clinical testing, raising hopes for its potential effectiveness and manufacturability.

The University of Queensland (UQ) released detailed results of animal trials of its vaccine candidate on Tuesday to the International Society for Vaccines, Xinhua news agency reported.

UQ’s “Molecular Clamp” vaccine works by locking on to the normally unstable, perfusion proteins on the surface of the virus, allowing the body’s immune system to respond more effectively.

“The neutralizing immune response created by our molecular clamp vaccine in animal models was better than the average level of antibodies found in patients who have recovered from Covid-19,” Project co-leader Associate Professor Keith Chappell said.

Phase 1 human trials for the drug commenced in Australia in July, prior to the current pre-clinical trial results being made public.

Chappell said if everything proceeded as planned, large-scale manufacturing efficacy assessments could move ahead before the end of the year.

“One of the big challenges in the development of vaccines is the ability to produce them at sufficient scale for widespread use,” Chappell explained.

In June, UQ revealed an agreement with Australian biotechnology giant CSL to locally manufacture millions of doses of the vaccine should it continue to prove viable throughout the rest of the trial process.

Queensland Innovation Minister Kate Jones said a vaccine was vital for putting an end to the pandemic and the team from UQ was committed to sharing their data and comparing it to the international reference standard.

“From the outset, we’ve been clear that we are racing against the virus and not against other projects, and now more than ever it is important for the scientific world to work together,” Jones said.

YouTube adds OnePlus Nord to its signature device list

0

Google has added the recently released OnePlus Nord to the YouTube Signature Devices list.

The YouTube Signature Devices program certifies smartphones that, according to Google, deliver the best YouTube-viewing experience, reports XDA Developers.

Features like HDR video, 4K video recording, high frame rate playback, good DRM performance, and VP9 codec decoding are among the required features that YouTube Signature Devices must support.

Google said it works closely with smartphone manufacturers to verify these phones meet the minimum performance standards.

It’s only after a phone has passed through Google’s rigorous testing criteria that it earns the YouTube Signature Device badge.

Earlier, OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, LG V60 ThinQ, and Motorola Edge+ devices have been added to YouTube’s Signature Device list.

Since its inception in 2018, the YouTube list has grown to over 50 devices from the biggest Android OEMs out there which now includes the most recent OnePlus devices.

Ex-Prez Mukherjee is in deep coma

Former President Pranab Mukherjee is in a deep coma and on ventilator support, the Army Research and Referral Hospital said on Wednesday. He has been hospitalized for the past 16 days and been critical following brain surgery.

The hospital authorities said, “Hon’ble Shri Pranab Mukherjee is being treated for a lung infection. His renal parameters are slightly deranged since yesterday.”

Last week, Mukherjee’s health condition deteriorated after he developed a lung infection. A team of specialists has been monitoring his vital and clinical parameters.

Mukherjee was also found to be Covid-19 positive when he was admitted on August 10 for the life-saving emergency surgery for a brain clot. There has been no improvement in his health status since.

The veteran leader was admitted to the hospital at 12.07 p.m. on August 10 in a critical condition.

UP Panchayat polls likely to be deferred due to pandemic

0

The Yogi Adityanath government has indicated that the Panchayat elections, scheduled to be held in December this year, maybe postponed for six months due to the corona pandemic.

Additional Chief Secretary, Panchayati Raj, Manoj Kumar Singh told reporters, “The issue is under active consideration of the government. Once the term of the Panchayati Raj bodies from the level of the village head to the Zila Panchayat head ends in December, local officers would take over as administrators and run the Panchayati Raj institutions.”

With over 52,000 village Panchayats, 61,000 block members, 821 blockheads, 3,000 Zila Panchayat members, and 75 Zila Panchayat chiefs, the election was to be held for nearly 8.50 lakh posts with a voter base of 10.50 crore — the highest in the country.

The extension of the elections by six months would take the poll process tentatively to May-June next year when the state will also be gearing up for the Assembly elections, due to be held in early 2022.

The decision on deferring local bodies elections in the rural areas in the state has also led to murmurs of dissent in the ruling BJP with leaders wanting to know that when Assembly elections can be held in Bihar in the pandemic, then why the Panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh are being deferred.

“For the state machinery also, it would be a challenge to hold the Panchayat elections and then the Assembly elections after six months,” said a senior officer in the state Election Commission.

Amazon’s Hyderabad campus still has space for 8K employees: Report

0

Amazon’s Hyderabad campus, which is its biggest so far in the world, still has the capacity to accommodate 8,000 employees, according to a new report in The New York Times.

This 15-story campus — three amenity floors and 12 office floors — which opened last year has the capacity to accommodate 15,000 employees and currently, it is home to 7,000 employees, the report said on Tuesday.

The workforce in this office largely comprises tech teams focused mainly on using Machine Learning and software development to innovate services.

Sprawling over 9.7 acres, the Hyderabad campus is the online retail giant’s biggest when compared to its other offices around the world.

Amazon, which has also faced protests from the country’s retail industry groups from time to time over concerns of crushing competition, says that the total built-up area of the Hyderabad office when spread out will span over 68 acres — approximately 65 football fields.

The campus contains over 2.5 times more steel than the Eiffel Tower, measured by weight, Amazon earlier said in a blog post.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) which claims to represent seven crore traders and over 40,000 trade associations have time protested against what it describes as deep discounting and unfair means by Amazon and Flipkart, which has impacted the offline traders.

Amazon also faced criticism after it announced the start of Amazon Pharmacy in Bengaluru this month.

The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), which claims to represent more than 850,000 members across the country demanded that the government should immediately stop these “illegal online pharmacies”.

While retailers suffered during the pandemic, Amazon saw a sharp spike in demand for its services.

Anushka Sharma: We owe it to each other to stay cautious during pandemic

Actress Anushka Sharma is keen to see Bollywood bounce back after the COVID pandemic and feels the industry is good at taking precautions.

“Our industry is very good at taking precautions to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. Going forward, the atmosphere on set will definitely be different, but we all need to embrace the changes as we know there is a good reason for these. We owe it to each other to stay cautious during this pandemic,” said the actress.

The pandemic has made Anushka introspective. “Living in the moment is the only thing that makes sense to me now, it makes me feel calm. The minute I start planning or thinking of the future, I have to bring myself to the present and deal with what I have to deal with right now,” she said.

Anushka is happy that she has achieved a work-life balance after over three years of trying to perfect it since her wedding. She says she is happy that she has become less judgemental.

“I’ve been introspective over the last three years. I don’t want to think that my only value is what I’ve achieved in life. Peace of mind is my priority and I’m happy that I have become more compassionate and less judgmental,” she says.

Karnataka ready to resume interstate bus services

0

The Karnataka government is ready to restart interstate bus services to four states and Puducherry and is awaiting their nod, a minister said.

“From our end, we are all set to restart bus operations to these states, Telangana, Goa, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. We are also ready to restart services to Puducherry, but not Maharashtra,” said Transport Minister Laxman Savadi.

He said, the state government has already corresponded with its counterparts in these states and is awaiting their nod to resume operations after the coronavirus enforced disruption. Savadi said the neighboring state governments are yet to respond to the letter correspondence.

According to Savadi, the state government went ahead with the bus service restoration idea after the new guidelines emerged from the Central government, easing most of the earlier restrictions.

On Monday, the Karnataka government lifted almost all the restrictions it put in place for interstate travelers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic under Unlock 3.0.

The state has discontinued registration on the Seva Sindhu portal, medical checkups at state borders, screening at receiving centres in the districts, categorization of passengers, hand stamping, and fortnight quarantine.

It also waived off isolation and testing, posters on the doors of the infected persons, intimation to neighbors, and monitoring by Panchayat or ward level teams, among others, for all asymptomatic arrivals.

Only for symptomatic interstate travelers, it advised self-isolation and medical attention according to the latest protocol.

The minister said the state will take some more time to restore bus services with Maharashtra as it is still reeling under the COVID pandemic.

In all likelihood, Karnataka will take a call on resuming services to Maharashtra in September.

Currently, interstate bus services have only been resumed to Andhra Pradesh. In normal times, the southern state used to ply as many as 2,500 government buses to its neighboring states using its state road transport corporations’ buses.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates services in 17 of the 30 districts across the state and also to Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

The corporation has about 8,650 buses and ferries around 30 lakh passengers daily in normal circumstances.

40 new Covid-19 cases in Agra, 30 in Mathura

0

The Agra district administration is prepared to contain the spread of Covid-19 which has dented economic activities in Agra, Mathura, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etah, and Kasganj.

With a leap in daily testing, the state health department has streamlined the medical infrastructure in the last four months. Continuous sanitation and conducting training in health camps for people and paramedical staff have contributed in a big way to stall the infection spread and lower the mortality rate. The overall recovery rate remains healthy, say, medical college doctors.

In the past 24 hours, there were 40 fresh cases in Agra, followed by 30 in Mathura, 25 in Mainpuri, 29 in Etah, 10 in Firozabad, and 28 in Kasganj.

The number of active cases in Agra is 296. The number of samples collected is 1,02,958 and 2,189 patients have recovered.

An additional city Magistrate and two of his staffers were found COVID-positive on Tuesday. The office has been sealed for two days for sanitization.

The SN Medical College management has directed doctors to conduct two COVID tests before undertaking any surgery, to ensure that the medical staff is secured against the coronavirus.

A health department official said the seven hospitals in Agra now have 1,055 beds for COVID patients, out of which only 94 were occupied while 165 patients were in home isolation.

Medical practitioners in Agra foresee a mini population explosion early 2021, as a large number of migrants have returned, people are forced to stay back home and there has been a disruption in the supply of family planning campaign material and contraceptives.

Another notable feature in the current battle against Covid-19 that has come to light is the contribution of women warriors. Almost 70 percent of the health force consists of lady doctors, paramedical staff, the Asha, Sangini, and ANM workers who collect samples, sanitize and distribute medicines and also counsel anxious patients.

Agra district has 2,395 Asha volunteers and 120 Sangini volunteers in addition to hundreds of ANMs.

0

England Test captain Joe Root is set to play his first T20 match since May 2019 when he plays for Yorkshire in their opening clash of T20 Blast competition against Nottinghamshire in Headingley on Thursday.

According to Yorkshire Cricket’s official website, Root has asked the England management to allow him to get some game time in T20 cricket, a format he is not an automatic choice for in international cricket.

A decision on his further availability will be made after the game. “We’re going to have Joe back for Thursday,” confirmed coach Andrew Gale on Tuesday morning.

“I spoke to Rooty last night, and he’s chomping at the bit.

“He’s got a point to prove not being in the England T20 set-up, which is a good thing for us.

“I’m not quite sure how many games he will play.

“He’s definitely going to play on Thursday. England is making a selection on the Australian T20I series on Sunday night. So he might play on Sunday (Derbyshire at home) and Monday (Notts away) as well. Everything’s a bit up in the air.

“I just see anything as a bonus because we didn’t expect to have him at all,” he added.

The 29-year-old has so far played 32 T20Is for England in which he has scored 893 runs with a strike rate of over 125.

England is scheduled to next play Pakistan in the three-match T20I series beginning Friday. After that, they will face Australia in three T20Is from September 4.

North Korean hacking group using LinkedIn to attack crypto firms

0

The infamous North Korean Lazarus group is back and this time, the hackers belonging to the group are targeting cryptocurrency organizations by sending phishing emails via Microsoft-owned LinkedIn.

According to the researchers at global cybersecurity firm F-Secure, a system administrator from the target organization received a phishing document via their personal LinkedIn account.

“The document masqueraded as a legitimate job advert for a role in a blockchain technology company that matched the employee’s skills,” F-Secure said in a statement.

Though the document on the target’s host had been altered to remove malicious content after execution, F-Secure assessed that the original document was the same, or similar to, a sample publicly available on internet security website VirusTotal.

According to data by VirusTotal, the original malicious content was created in 2019.

In 2019, F-Secure uncovered technical details on Lazarus Group’s modus operandi during an investigation of an attack on an organization in the cryptocurrency vertical.

“Lazarus Group’s activities are a continued threat: the phishing campaign associated with this attack has been observed continuing into 2020, raising the need for awareness and ongoing vigilance among organizations operating in the targeted verticals,” the cybersecurity firm said.

Earlier this year, the hacker group stole cryptocurrency from Mac and Windows users.

Lazarus was also involved in stealing nearly $600 million worth of crypto between 2017 and 2018.

“There is evidence in recent reporting of Lazarus Group leveraging similar techniques to those observed in this campaign, such as the preference of LinkedIn as a delivery medium, to compromise organizations in other verticals,” F-Secure said.

“It is F-Secure’s assessment that the group will continue to target organizations within the cryptocurrency vertical while it remains such a profitable pursuit, but may also expand to target supply chain elements of the vertical to increase returns and longevity of the campaign”.

In July this year, reports surfaced that North Korea-based hackers have engaged in a large scale digital skimming activity since May 19, breaking into online stores like international fashion chain Claires to insert malicious code that steals payment card details of the users in the US and Europe.

In June, a ZDNet report said India was among six nations that may see a large cyber attack in the form of Covid-19 themed phishing campaign from North Korean state hackers.

“The attack is part of the Lazarus Group’s large-scale campaign targeting more than 50 lakh individuals and businesses, including small and large enterprises, across six countries: India, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, the UK, and the US, according to the report.

Telangana sees biggest single-day spike in Covid cases

0

In the biggest single-day spike, Telangana on Wednesday reported 3,018 new Covid-19 cases, taking the state’s tally to 1,11,688.

The death toll also rose to 780 with 10 more people succumbing to the virus during the last 24 hours, officials said.

This is the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic in March that the state has registered over 3,000 new cases in a single day. It came a day after the state saw the biggest jump of 2,579 new COVID cases.

Officials explained that the number of cases increased with the ramping up of tests. During the last 24 hours, the state conducted 61,040 tests, breaking the previous day’s record of 52,933 tests.

According to a media bulletin issued from the office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, this has taken the total number of tests done so far to 10,82,094.

Under flak from various quarters for its poor testing, the Telangana government doubled the daily number of tests. During the last four days, over 1.90 lakh tests were conducted.

A total of 16 government and 31 private laboratories are conducting RT-PCR/CBNAAT/TRUENAT types of tests while there are 1,076 rapid antigen test centers. However, the authorities have not been providing a breakup of the type of tests conducted.

The samples tested per million population mounted to 29,146 against a daily testing target of 5,600 per day as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) benchmark of 140 per million per day. The results of 1,176 samples were awaited.
