Epic Games wins against Apple on Unreal Engine, loses Fortnite

0

A US judge has ruled that Apple cannot delete the developer account of Epic Games that support open and real-time 3D creation platform Unreal Engine but can keep the Fortnite game away from the App Store for violating its policies.

Apple had threatened to terminate Epic Games’ developer account by August 28 which would cut the company off from iOS and macOS development tools.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers agreed that there is “potential significant damage to both the Unreal Engine platform itself, and to the gaming industry generally” it the platform is banned.

She, however, decided that Apple will not be required to bring the banned Fortnite game back to the App Store, The Verge reported on Tuesday.

“The court finds that with respect to Epic Games’ motion as to its games, including Fortnite, Epic Games has not yet demonstrated irreparable harm. The current predicament appears of its own making,” the judge was quoted as saying.

“Epic Games and Apple are at liberty to litigate against each other, but their dispute should not create havoc to bystanders,” Rogers said.

The same judge earlier said that she was likely to take action to protect Unreal Engine but may let the ban on popular game Fortnite stand.

Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Apple last week, alleging that the tech giant is threatening to terminate its developer account by August 28.

Fortnite was removed from the Apple App Store on August 13 for adding an in-app payment system in violation of the App Store rules.

Apple welcomed the decision on the removal of Fortnite game, saying “it’s ready to welcome Fortnite back if Epic Games decides to remove the direct payment option and return to the status quo”.

“We agree with Judge Gonzalez-Rogers that ‘the sensible way to proceed’ is for Epic to comply with the App Store guidelines and continue to operate while the case proceeds”.

Launched in 2017, Fortnite features a battle royale format where 100 players compete to survive as the last player standing on a remote island.

The popular game has amassed a huge following of 350 million players and is available on multiple platforms.

Epic Games claimed that developers were already leaving Unreal Engine as uncertainty loomed over its future in the Apple ecosystem.

Microsoft had declared its support for the Unreal Engine platform by Epic Games in an additional filing.

Epic Games has announced ‘Unreal Engine 5’ to be released by late-2021.

New Facebook Reality Labs to develop next-gen AR/VR products

0

The social networking giant has renamed its augmented reality/virtual reality (AR-VR) team as Facebook Reality Labs as the company starts building the next-gen computing platform for deeper immersive experiences.

Previously, Facebook Reality Labs was the name given to its research division, which had historically been known as Oculus Research.

The company on Tuesday announced to organize its annual conference ‘Facebook Connect’ virtually on September 16 and will be free for everyone to attend.

“Our research teams have helped establish Facebook Reality Labs as a pioneer in the AR/VR space as we work to deliver the next computing platform,” said Andrew Bosworth, Head of Facebook Reality Labs.

Facebook’s work in AR/VR spans a number of breakthrough technologies like Oculus headsets that let people defy distance with cutting-edge VR hardware, while Portal helps friends and families stay connected and share the moments that matter in meaningful ways.

‘Spark AR’ powers immersive experiences for Facebook’s apps and devices.

Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in 2014.

“Rather than distracting us and taking us away from the people around us, tomorrow’s AR and VR devices will melt away, letting us connect and be truly present with the people and moments that matter most,” Bosworth said.

The Facebook Reality Labs is building the entire stack, including hardware and software, so privacy is baked into its design process from the beginning, Facebook said.

At ‘Facebook Connect,’ viewers can experience keynotes from leaders and industry visionaries to hear about the latest innovations in AR/VR and join immersive developer sessions.

Google launches faster tabs, cool features in Chrome browser

0

Google has introduced several features including tabs that load faster and let you organize and find them easily in the Chrome browser as you work or study from home.

To start with, Google has made tabs 10 percent faster in Chrome via under-the-hood performance improvements.

Now the users can collapse and expand tab groups so it’s easier to see the ones they need to access.

“If you use Chrome in your laptop’s tablet mode, you’ll soon have an easier time flipping through your tabs, finding the page you’re looking for, and browsing the web,” Google said in a statement on Tuesday.

Coming to Chromebooks first, a new touchscreen interface has tabs that are larger and more practical to organize, and hide when people don’t need them.

“Rolling out on Android in this release, when you start typing a page title into the address bar, you’ll see a suggestion to switch to that tab if you already have it open. You can already do this in Chrome on your laptop,” Google informed.

“For Android users, we’ve improved URL sharing to help you quickly copy a link, send it to Chrome on your other devices, and send links through other apps,” Google said.

You can also print the page or generate a QR code to scan or download.

This new QR code feature is also rolling out to Chrome on desktop and can be accessed from a new QR icon in the Chrome address bar.

Coming to Chrome Beta, a new feature will help you hover over a tab and quickly see a thumbnail preview of the page. This feature is useful when you have lots of tabs that look the same.

Google said it is also improving Chrome’s PDF functionality.

Over the next few weeks, the users will be able to fill out PDF forms and save them with their inputs, directly from Chrome.

If you open the file again, you can pick up where you left off, said the company.

Ronaldinho returns to Brazil after house arrest in Paraguay

0

Former Barcelona star Ronaldinho has returned to Brazil after almost six months in custody in neighboring Paraguay for allegedly using a fake passport.

Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto Assis were whisked past dozens of journalists and fans at Rio de Janeiro’s Tom Jobim international airport before being taken in a private car to a condominium in the affluent Barra da Tijuca district on Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency.

On Monday, a judge in Asuncion suspended charges against the pair after they struck a plea bargain with prosecutors.

The brothers spent more than a month in prison before being relocated to the four-star Palmaroga Hotel after paying $1.6 million in bail.

Under the terms of the deal with investigators, Ronaldinho agreed to a $90,000 fine and must report to a federal judge in Brazil every three months for two years.

Assis was ordered to pay $110,000 and will not be allowed to leave Brazil over a two-year period. He will also keep a criminal record in Paraguay.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ronaldinho’s lawyer Sergio Queiroz raised the prospect of filing a lawsuit against Paraguayan authorities for “injustices” related to the brothers’ detention.

Ronaldinho and Assis traveled to the South American country on March 4 to participate in a children’s charity event and promote a new book. They were arrested later that day on accusations of presenting false travel documents to immigration officials.

The pair have denied any wrongdoing and said they had no knowledge of carrying adulterated passports.

Ronaldinho retired from football in 2018 after a career that included spells at Gremio, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Milan, and Atletico Mineiro, among other clubs. He was a part of the Brazil team that won the 2002 World Cup and was twice voted the FIFA world player of the year.

Mohit Sehgal on shooting for ‘Naagin 5’ amid new normal

Actor Mohit Sehgal is back on TV after a while and that too with the much-anticipated fifth season of the popular show, Naagin.

“The show must go on. One can’t wait till the coronavirus (pandemic) ends. It was important to resume work and move on,” reasoned Mohit while speaking to IANS, on why it was important to return to work despite the current situation.

“Also, one should not neglect health while working. Proper precautions are being taken on the sets. We actors ensure we don’t touch things here and there. Everything is taking care of now. The staff wears masks and shields while doing the make-up of the actors. So, we all have been doing our best to take necessary steps,” Mohit said.

“Naagin 5” also stars Hina Khan, Surbhi Chandna, and Sharad Malhotra. It airs on Colors TV.

Vir Das: There’s nothing to lose when you do charity

Comedian-actor Vir Das says the idea of helping people through his craft of comedy always lets him be in a win-win situation.

Vir Das has released his latest fundraiser show “Inside Out” on his YouTube channel. He says the effort has given him an opportunity to reach out to frontline workers who risk their lives to fight COVID, as well as people who are often marginalized — like the aged.

“I think when you are doing something for charity, there is nothing to lose. I never intended to do the show in a proper show format. The whole show has developed very organically, from the basic question, ‘what will you do the first thing once the lockdown is over?’ It is a charity special in which we are bringing people together to contribute a minimum of Rs 30. It will amount to something good, will help some people! It is a win-win!” he told IANS.

The show that released on August 21, is billed as unique and unscripted.

“While scripting the final of it, I was feeling free as the content is honest and it comes from the audience. The fun is coming from the answers of the audience when they are asked what will they do. People were candid, some were vulnerable while others were just opening up while talking to me. That way, it is real,” said the comedian.

So, were there any weird or mad answers? Vir promptly replied: “Yes bro! I have to tell you, every five minutes I would get one of those crazy answers! Like, people would say they want to have sex, meet their partners, want to do drugs, they want to make-out, get married! Some would also say that they want to meet their parents, but overall I think this lockdown affected all of us. Their answers were a reflection of that! I would say that it was a privilege to let into people’s lives that way!”

“I genuinely believe that privilege is something that I should pass on. You should share privilege. During the lockdown, I was privileged enough to stay safe, but not everyone was. That was the basic thought behind the charity show,” he further added.

Why did he opt for YouTube rather than an OTT platform, as he did for his earlier shows? “It is more inclusive when it is released on YouTube. A section of the population may or may not have a subscription to OTT, but they would have access to a free platform like YouTube and the heart to donate thirty rupees,” he reasoned.

Maguire found guilty by Greek court, withdrawn from England squad

0

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming two UEFA Nations League games in September after being found guilty of three charges by a Greek court.

On Tuesday, Gareth Southgate named a 24-man squad for their Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark. The 27-year-old Maguire was selected by the Three Lions manager initially despite his trial being underway in Greece.

However, after the Manchester United captain was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery on the Greek island of Syros on Tuesday, Southgate decided to drop Maguire from the squad, reports Xinhua news agency.

“In light of this evening’s developments, I can confirm I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark,” Southgate was quoted by the English Football Association website.

“As I said earlier today, I reserved the right to review the situation. Having spoken to Manchester United and the player, I have made this decision in the best interests of all parties and with consideration of the impact on our preparations for next week.”

The Manchester United captain has been charged for aggravated assault and attempted bribery of an official. He was given a suspended sentence of 21 months after Tuesday’s trial even though he pleaded not guilty of any charge.

According to a British media report, Maguire was involved in a brawl last week while on holiday in Mykonos. He spent two nights in custody after he was arrested.

Maguire maintains his innocence. “Following the hearing today, I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing,” he said.

Manchester United believed that Maguire’s defense team was given little time to prepare. “It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed the charges and provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defense team minimal time to digest them and prepare. A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied,” read a club statement.

“On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire’s legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date.”

England will travel to face Iceland on September 5 before heading to Copenhagen to face Denmark on September 8.

Family of black man shot in Wisconsin to file civil lawsuit against police

0

The family of Jacob Blake would be filing a civil lawsuit against the Kenosha Police Department over the shooting, said a family attorney.

Blake was shot by police seven times in the back at close range in Kenosha in the southeastern corner of the US midwestern state of Wisconsin on Sunday.

Ben Crump, one of the family attorneys, said at a news conference on Tuesday that his client is paralyzed and it would “take a miracle” for him to walk again, with Blake’s family members standing behind, Xinhua news agency reported.

Crump also represented George Floyd’s family three months ago when Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill.

“They shot my son seven times, seven times like he didn’t matter,” said Blake’s father in a choked voice. “But my son matters. He’s a human being and he matters.”

Blake was still in surgery while the news conference was held on Tuesday afternoon, Crump said.

Protests triggered by the shooting continued in Kenosha and spread to Madison, capital of Wisconsin, and Minneapolis in Minnesota Monday night.

Defying an 8 p.m. curfew, hundreds of protesters in Kenosha set fire to several buildings downtown as well as to cars and dumpsters on Monday night. More than 30 businesses were destroyed or damaged.

The protestors even clashed with officers in riot gear, including 125 members of the Wisconsin National Guard, who were guarding the courthouse. The police used tear gas.

In Madison, windows were smashed, fires lit and some shops looted late on Monday into early Tuesday. Police deployed tear gas and pepper spray. Six people were arrested.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has declared a state of emergency and will deploy more Wisconsin National Guard troops.

In Minneapolis, 11 were arrested after breaking windows at the Hennepin County jail on Monday night. One police officer suffered a broken hand in an altercation with demonstrators, the sheriff’s department said, cited by local media.

Early Monday, Democratic presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden issued a statement on the shooting, saying the shots “pierce the soul of our nation.” “Equal justice has not been real for Black Americans and so many others. We are at an inflection point. We must dismantle systemic racism.”

The Division of Criminal Investigation under the Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the case. The division aims to provide a report of the incident to the prosecutor within 30 days.

Kenosha, a city of about 100,000 people located between Milwaukee and Chicago, is bracing for the third night of protests.

0

Lionel Messi has told Barcelona that he wants to leave the club this summer, reports said.

According to ESPN, the club confirmed that they were notified by Messi of his decision via burofax, a service used in Spain to urgently dispatch a document that requires proof to third parties.

The announcement comes 11 days after Barcelona’s humiliating 2-8 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, one of the worst defeats in the player’s career and in the club’s history.

Messi (33) has a contract until 2021 but has grown disappointed with events on and off the pitch at Camp Nou in recent months.

Coach Quique Setien was sacked after the Bayern loss. Messi met with Setien’s replacement, Ronald Koeman, last week, telling him that he had doubts about his future in Catalonia.

Big B sings in musical film presented by AR Rahman

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman presents the upcoming musical film, Atkin Chakan. Among the highlights is the fact that Amitabh Bachchan has sung a song in the soundtrack of the film composed by master percussionist Sivamani.

The film tells the story of a 12-year-old chai delivery boy and his dream.

“‘Atkin Chatkan’ is a story that is enriched with heart and hope, and we are finally sharing it with the world on a global platform. The rhythm of this kid’s dream will beat with a passion that it is a perfect example of hope,” Rahman said.

The protagonist is a 12-year-old chai delivery boy named Guddu, whose passion is to observe, listen, and create new sounds. He finds rhythm in almost everything. Rising beyond his daily mundane life, he forms a band with three other street children.

Playing Guddu is gifted child pianist Lydian Nadhaswaram, who is also Rahman’s protege. The film will also star Sachin Chaudhary, Yash Rane, and Tamanna Dipak.

The music of the film is scored by the celebrated percussionist Shivamani. “The music in the film plays an integral part, but it’s the storyline that will give the audience a sense of hope. The friendship between the four kids and their passion to fulfil their dream is the rhythm that the world would want to dance to while watching the film. Hope and burning passion are the key takeaways,” said Shivamani.

Amitabh Bachchan, Sonu Nigam, Hariharan, Runa Sivamani, and Uthara Unnikrishnan have sung the songs.

The film is written and directed by filmmaker Saumyy Shivhare, produced by Vishakha Singh, and is slated to release on Zee5 on September 5.

Facebook introduces new shopping tab on its platform

The social networking giant has launched Facebook Shop on its main app, just like Instagram, that will help businesses showcase their products for billions of users to buy.

Facebook also announced to expand the checkout feature on Instagram to all US businesses and creators. Checkout helps users shop inside Instagram or Facebook without leaving the app and remembers your payment information.

“We’re also making Shops available to any eligible business and adding customization features, messaging and new insights,” the company said in a statement late on Tuesday.

“With Live Shopping, we’re making it easier for people to shop in real-time. We’ve been testing this feature on both Facebook and Instagram,” it added.

Facebook Live Shopping includes new features to help businesses easily set up a live experience featuring products from their Shop and sell directly from the video.

Instagram Live Shopping is now available to all businesses and creators using checkout in the US.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the shift to online shopping has rapidly accelerated, with an estimated 85 percent of people worldwide now shopping online.

Facebook Shop is now being testing in the US.

The company launched a complementary shopping destination on Instagram in July, called Instagram Shop, where people can discover and buy products from creators and brands, all in one place.

Facebook said it is waiving “selling fees for businesses through the end of the year” to reduce the cost of doing business online, especially given the current economic crisis.

Messaging through Shops combines the in-store experience of being able to ask a salesperson questions with the convenience of online shopping.

Messaging allows businesses to provide personalized assistance so people can make more informed decisions about their purchase.

“Customers can view products right within the chat, making it easy to share products with friends and family to get feedback before making a purchase. We’re testing this feature on Messenger and Instagram Direct now, and will start testing it on WhatsApp soon,” the company said.

Punjab govt has money for TikTokers but not us, says boxer Simranjit

0

Olympic-bound boxer Simranjit Kaur is still in search of a job despite a “promise” being made by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh five months back.

In January, when Simranjit — who recently qualified for Tokyo Olympics — shared her financial problems with the mediapersons, Amarinder immediately took to Twitter and assured all the help to the Indian boxer. “I have directed Secretary, Sports to immediately look into what needs to be done,” he had said. Cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju also at that time had thanked the media for highlighting Simranjit’s struggle.

However, Simranjit claims she has not received any help from the state government. “I don’t know much about their (government) criteria. I was promised Rs 5 lakh also but who cares? Whereas, TikTok stars got their money from the Punjab government well on time,” an emotional Simranjit said while narrating her eternal wait story to IANS.

“I was also promised a job in Punjab government when I met Chief Minister sir in March, again who cares?”

“Why they want us, the athletes, to keep begging for what we deserve or promised?” she added.

“I haven’t got a written assurance as of yet. Not a single paper in writing. I don’t know whom to meet or request. I can’t do anything much. Lockdown has stalled everything, everywhere, so let’s see when all this get over and when I get a job. They should understand, I really, really need it (job),” the boxer said.

Simranjit, who hails from Ludhiana’s Chakar village, is the sole breadwinner of her family of five, which includes two younger brothers, elder sister and mother. Her father, who worked at a local grocery store, died in July 2018 due to a heart attack. Since then, the family is entirely dependent on what Simranjit earns from participating in international tournaments.

The 24-year-old boxer is currently in the national camp in Patiala. “My training is going great guns. I want to win a medal at the Tokyo Games. It was great to resume training after a long wait because of the nation-wide lockdown.

The boxers also said she keeps herself engaged with some creative work. “I do drawing to keep my mind fresh and focused. It is one of my passions. I also do sewing which I learnt from my mother (Rajpal Kaur). I am not just sitting at home and letting any negativity come to my mind. However, there are times when I feel a little worried because of my job and family. But then my mother always keeps motivating me,” she said.

Simranjit, who won a 64kg World Championships bronze in Delhi in 2018, had lost the 60kg trials for 2019 Worlds to the seasoned Sarita Devi. However, she improved her game to beat Sarita in the Olympic qualifier trial and secured a quota place by claiming a silver medal in the Asia/Oceania qualifying event in Amman.

Sushant’s PR person Radhika Nihalani is mystery girl spotted outside his home: Shibani Dandekar

Singer-actress Shibani Dandekar has refuted the theory that she is the mystery girl spotted outside the apartment of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Shibani claimed the girl in question is his PR person Radhika Nihalani.

“This is NOT me nor is it Simone! Please fact check before you speculate.. this is his PR person Radhika Nihalani @radhikahuja and her assistant. Stop with the fake news! Enough! My silence doesn’t give you the right to continue spreading lies and hate,” she wrote on Twitter, while sharing a link which has now been deleted.

A video that went viral a while back showed a girl outside Sushant’s apartment talking to the domestic staff. The girl could not be recognised because she was wearing a mask. It has been claimed that the video is from the day when Sushant died.

Many netizens speculated the ‘mystery girl’ — as sections of the media have named her — is Shibani.

Sushant was found dead in his Bandra flat in Mumbai on June 14. Now, the CBI has taken over the case.

While the CBI investigates the case, many conjectures and theories have surfaced online. Some celebrities are debunking the claims, and setting the record straight.

Before Shibani, actor Sooraj Pancholi had denounced reports claiming his connection with Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Sooraj said claimed he has never met or spoken to Disha in his life, in a social media post.
