The Divisional Commissioner of Agra, Anil Kumar has lost both his parents to Covid-19 in a span of two days. They were under treatment in a Noida hospital.

His father R. C. Meena and mother Vijay Laxmi were admitted to Noida’s J.P. Hospital for treatment. On August 5, in a random antigen test Anil Kumar’s father, mother and a sister, who is an IAS officer, were found Covid positive. When the health condition of the parents deteriorated in a private hospital in Agra, the two were shifted to the Noida hospital. Anil Kumar’s sister has recovered, but his parents succumbed to the disease. Kumar’s father died on Saturday and about 24 hours later, his mother also passed away.

Half a dozen officials of various state government departments are under treatment at different places in Agra. A few municipal corporation officials too reported positive on Monday. They have been home quarantined.

In the past 24 hours, Agra reported 33 fresh cases. Mathura reported 26 new cases with three deaths and Firozabad 15, including a senior doctor of the medical college. Mainpuri had nine new cases, Etah 45 and Kasganj 30, including several state government officials.

The total number of cases in Agra now is 2,552 with 107 deaths. So far 2,162 people have recovered. More than a lakh samples have been tested. The recovery rate stands at 84.07 percent.

Pandemic-proofing: Govt consumption to support demand, says RBI

0

Government consumption is expected to continue “pandemic-proofing” of demand, the Reserve Bank said on Tuesday.

In its Annual Report 2019-20, the Reserve Bank of India said that when the demands gets stabilised, private consumption is likely to lead the recovery.

“Going forward, government consumption is expected to continue pandemic-proofing of demand, and private consumption is expected to lead the recovery when it takes hold, with non-discretionary spending leading the way unt il a durable increase in disposable incomes enables discretionary spending to catch up,” it said.

An assessment of aggregate demand during the year so far suggests that the shock to consumption is severe, and it will take quite some time to mend and regain the pre-Covid momentum, as per the report.

It noted that private consumption has lost its discretionary elements across the board, particularly transport services, hospitality, recreation and cultural activities and behavioural restraints may prevent the normalisation of demand for these activities.

The Reserve Bank’s survey for the month of July indicates that consumer confidence fell to an all-time low, with a majority of respondents report ing pessimism relating to the general economic situation, employment, inflation and income; however, respondents indicated expectations of recovery for t he year ahead.

“Urban consumption demand has suffered a bigger blow – passenger vehicle sales and supply of consumer durables in Q1: 2020-21 have dropped to a fifth and one third, respectively, of their level a year ago; air passenger t raffic has ground to a halt. Rural demand, by contrast, has fared better,a it said.

Among underlying indicators, tractor sales picked up by 38.5 per cent in July, spurred by the robust pace of kharif sowing, while the contraction in mot orcycle sales eased in July — from 35.2 per cent in June to 4.9 per cent in July.

The decline in production of consumer non-durables turned positive in June. A fuller recovery in rural demand is, however, being held back by muted wage growth which is still hostage to the migrant crisis and associated employment losses.

Initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan is likely to generate employment in rural areas. Along with increased wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), they should provide a fillip to rural incomes, said the RBI report.

On production activity, RBI noted that Indian agriculture is undergoing a distinct transformation, notwithstanding headwinds.

“Going forward, shifting the terms of trade in favour of agriculture is the key to sustaining this dynamic change and generating positive supply responses in agricultural production. Experience shows that in periods when the terms of trade remained favourable to agriculture, annual average growth in agricultural gross value added (GVA) exceeded 3 per cent,” the report said.

“Hitherto, the main instrument of incentive has been minimum support prices, but the experience has been that price incentives have been costly, inefficient and even distortive. India has now reached a stage in which surplus management has become a major challenge. The priority is to move to pol icy strategies that ensure a sustained increase in farmers’ income alongside reasonable food prices for consumers. An efficient domestic supply c hain becomes critical here.

As per the report, India’s manufacturing has been locked in a structural slowdown for “quite some time”.

“Reversing this decline warrants a complete rethink. The quality and efficiency of the physical infrastructure, which still significantly lags behind the global median, has to be enhanced to help manufacturing take off,” RBI said in the report.

“Benchmarking systems and procedures with the best in the world could galvanise growth in the sector, aided by cleaning up of stressed balance sheets of corporates by raising the efficiency of bankruptcy and solvency procedures.”

In addition, the RBI cited the need to unlock entrepreneurial energies and risk appetite by improving the business environment.

“Faster enforcement of contracts, including through expansion of judicial and insolvency capacities, would be a game changer,” the report said.

“Property registrations can be speeded up from the current 58 days, and a centralised website can provide real time information on all regulatory compliance requirements.”

“In general, the compliance burden can be streamlined substantial. The COVID-19 crisis can be converted into an opportunity by using online provision of education and training to implement reforms in the social infrastructure by skill development and reskilling so as to prepare a labour force equipped to keep pace with a big thrust on infrastructure.”

Odisha CM seeks postponement of JEE, NEET exams

0

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday urged the Centre to postpone the NEET and JEE exams scheduled to be held in the first fortnight of September.

In a letter to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the Chief Minister urged the cancellation of the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET) in view of the Covid-19 pandemic and also direct the National Testing Agency (NTA) to open exam centres in all 30 districts of the state.

“In view of the prevailing pandemic conditions in the country, it will be highly unsafe and perilous for the students to physically visit the test centres to appear in these tests,” Patnaik said.

“Besides, as frequent lockdowns/shutdowns are enforced by district administrations concerned due to sudden spike in corona case in certain areas, transportation too gets disrupted,” he added.

More than 50,000 students from Odisha are appearing in NEET and around 40,000 in JEE (Main) this year. However, the NTA has opened examination centres in only seven townships of the state.

The Chief Minister also said that Odisha has got vast tribal pockets which are in virtually inaccessible areas, far away from the urban centres in the state.

Students of such areas may be deprived of the opportunity to sit for these exams, as they will have to travel long distances to the exam centres, he added.

The NTA is scheduled to conduct the JEE (Main) and NEET 2020 for admissions to technical and medical courses from September 1-6 and on September 13 respectively.

Vaccine candidate for gallbladder cancer identified

0

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, an international team of scientists have identified the possible vaccine candidates for gallbladder cancer.

In a study, published in the journal Nature Communications, scientists from the US- and India-based MedGenome, along with an international team of researchers from India, South Korea, Chile and Australia reported sequencing and analysis of over 150 gallbladder cancer (GBC) samples.

Currently there are no targeted therapies for treating this cancer. Gallbladder cancer in the US has a higher incidence among Southwestern Native Americans and Mexican Americans. It is more prevalent in South American countries that include Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador, and in Asian countries such as Korea, India, Pakistan and Japan.

“The work deepens on our understanding of the underlying genomics of GBC, including the identification of new pathways, immune microenvironment and actionable mutations”, said study co author Eric Stawiski from MedGenome in the US.

The team performed a comprehensive genomic analysis and identified several targetable genomic alterations. In particular they identified frequent alterations of the ELF3 gene. They showed that the mutated peptides derived from ELF3 have the potential for use as a cancer vaccine to treat gallbladder cancer patients carrying alteration in this gene.

The researchers obtained whole-exome sequencing data for 160 gallbladder cancer samples, the transcriptomes of 115 samples, and low-pass whole genome data for 146 samples. These samples came from 94 patients from South Korea, 64 from India, and nine from Chile. Overall, based on the exome sequencing data, they identified protein-altering somatic mutations in 10,224 genes, about half of which were recurrent mutations.

They specifically homed in on 25 significantly mutated genes, which included well-known oncogenes like ERBB2 and KRAS; tumour suppressor genes like TP53 and ARID2; and other less well-established cancer-linked genes like ELF3.

“Our scientists were able to show the potential for use of ELF3-derived mutant peptides as a cancer vaccine for treating GBC and shows the value of the platform for the identification of cancer vaccine candidates,” said Rayman Mathoda, CEO, MedGenome.

K’taka CM’s relief fund mops up Rs 306 crore for Covid care

0

Thousands of citizens and corporates contributed Rs 306 crore to the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for treating Covid-hit patients across the southern state, an official said on Tuesday.

“The state government’s appeal for liberal contributions to the relief fund received an overwhelming response from citizens and corporates across the state despite corona virus affecting their life and livelihood,” an official at the chief minister’s office told IANS here.

Of the Rs 306 crore donated to the fund from March 25 to July 23, 50 per cent of the corpus has been spent on Covid relief measures across the state as per the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Union Health Ministry under the National Disaster Management Act.

“While contributions from individuals ranged from a modest Rs 100 to over Rs 1 lakh, corporates and cooperatives donated generously in lakhs of rupees, exemption from income tax notwithstanding,” said the official.

As the state-run hospitals did not have medical equipment and installed capacity to treat Covid patients in thousands at a time, the relief fund was used to ramp-up facilities and supplies in designated hospitals and primary health centres at the local body and district levels.

“As intensive care unit (ICU) beds were not in adequate numbers for treating patients in serious condition or requiring oxygen or ventilators, substantial amount of the fund was used in creating more ICUs and oxygen flow beds in cities and towns across the state,” noted the official.

Of the relief amount (Rs 153 crore) spent so far, Rs 109 crore was given to the state health department for additional facilities, capacity expansion and medical equipment supplies, Rs 44 crore to the state medical education department for resource mobilisation.

“Personal appeal by Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa soon after the pandemic broke in mid-March for contributions evoked good response from the people and institutions as Rs 127 crore was received by the relief fund between March 25 and April 9 during the first phase of the lockdown enforced to contain the virus spread,” the official pointed out.

Besides Yediyurappa donating his 1-year salary (Rs 24.10 lakh), 30 per cent salary of all state legislators and ministers, contributed Rs 15 crore to the fund.

Stopped watching IPL since Sachin’s retirement, says Sushma Verma

0

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been the heartthrob of Indian cricket fans for decades. There have been several instances where cricket fans said that they have stopped watching the sport following Tendulkar’s retirement in 2013.

It turns out that Indian women’s wicket-keeper batter Sushma Verma is no different as the 27-year-old recently revealed that she used to be an avid Mumbai Indian follower until the Master Blaster called it quits after the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“I don’t watch much of the IPL now. I used to watch Mumbai Indians play when Sachin used to be a part of it,” Sushma told IANS while adding that Test cricket is something she enjoys the most.

Like any Indian cricket fan, Sushma also admitted her admiration for the 47-year-old cricket icon and remembered an instance when the Himachal Pradesh-based traveled to Dharamsala to watch Tendulkar play for the Mumbai Indians. But she had to go back home disappointed.

“I do admire Sachin Tendulkar a lot. Actually, Mumbai Indians had come to Dharamsala to play and I was hoping to see Sachin play. But Sachin did not turn up to play. So, after that I decided not to watch it again,” Sushma said.

The wicket-keeper batswoman, who is currently looking to get back into the Indian side, further said she is also an MS Dhoni fan and remembered an instance when she met the recently retired former Indian captain.

“I have met Dhoni with the whole team and I introduced myself to him and told him that I am too a wicketkeeper. Then he told me to keep up the good work. I like his style of batting and he was a great Indian captain,” said Sushma.

The 27-year-old has so far played 1 Test, 38 ODIs and 19 T20Is for the Indian women’s team.

Digital payments platform PhonePe which is focusing on financial services for driving growth said on Tuesday that it has emerged as the fastest-growing insure-tech distributor in India.

In the last four months alone, PhonePe has added six new products in the insurance and wealth management space.

PhonePe said its mutual fund offerings have also seen investments from over 5,000 cities and towns in India.

“This year we will be launching multiple tailor-made products across insurance and mutual funds and expect to have one of the most comprehensive product offerings in the space. Our philosophy has always been to launch customer-centric products backed by a deep understanding of customer needs, with simplified payment flows.” Hemant Gala, Vice President, Financial Services & Payments, PhonePe, said in a statement.

“The customer response to the recent launches has been phenomenal resulting in us becoming the fastest growing insure-tech distributor in India. We have also seen Mutual Fund investments from over 15,000 pin codes across tier 1, 2 & 3 cities and towns,” he added.

One of PhonePe’s mutual fund customers from Dhanbad who recently started using Liquid Funds said “I always thought Mutual Funds are risky. But when I got to know about Liquid Funds, I found it to be a good way to invest as there was zero stock market risk. I tried it out and started earning better returns on my money than my savings account. I am very happy to save my money with Liquid Funds.”

Another customer from Vishakapatnam who purchased a coronavirus insurance policy on PhonePe said “When I registered a claim which I thought would be a tedious process, I was in for a pleasant surprise as the claim amount was transferred to my account within a week. The entire process was very quick and easy.”

PhonePe has over 230 million registered users. What is noteworthy is that over 70 percent of PhonePe’s transactions come from tier-2 and tier-3 cities with many users buying insurance products and investing in mutual funds for the first time.

Would’ve played more than 100 Tests had I been consistent, says Jaffer

0

Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer believes he would have played more than 100 Test matches for the country had he been more consistent with his performance.

“I wasn’t that consistent. If I was, I would have played more than 100 Test matches. I was not that consistent at the international level that is why I got dropped,” Jaffer said while speaking on Sports Tiger’s show ‘Off the Field’.

“I am famous for my first-class career more than the international cricket that I have played,” he added.

Jaffer has one of the best domestic records in Indian cricket with over 19,000 runs to his name playing in 260 first-class games with an average of 50.67 and the best score of 314. However, he represented India in 31 Test matches and scored 1944 runs at an average of 34.11.

“In 2012-13, I was very close to getting selected when Shikhar Dhawan got selected. So, I came very close a couple of times but somehow I missed the bus. The selectors are the best people who can answer that but I definitely kept knocking the door,” he said.

Jaffer also spoke about his new role on being appointed as the head coach of Uttarakhand.

“It’s quite exciting, something which is very new to me. Even though, I have tried my hand in coaching, but not as a head coach. I have done some batting consultancy and I have played some part in coaching but taking up the whole team is quite exciting and challenging, so I am looking forward to it.”

He also commented about the Indian domestic cricket season and said: “Our domestic structure as compared to the other countries isn’t bad, to be honest. We just need a little bit more continuity as every year we keep on changing the structure.”

He added, “I feel the season should start in October with the Ranji Trophy. It should be ideally followed by the Irani Trophy and after that, a T20 tournament like Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy can be put in place as it is the time when the action happens. A number of franchise people can see the tournament and scout new talent. Finally, finish the season with Vijay Hazare Trophy.”

With the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) round the corner, Jaffer believes that the tournament is very important as it provides the monetary benefit and the stage to perform.

However, he feels that though there are a lot of positives youngsters should keep their priorities right. “To pick a player in Test cricket because of his performance in IPL is something which is wrong. I think if he performs well in IPL maybe we can look at him in the white-ball format.”

Jaffer also feels BCCI should allow non-centrally contracted players to play outside India in other leagues. “It completely makes sense to me. If you are not one of the centrally contracted players then one should be allowed. The board can minimize and reduce it to one or two leagues in which the players can participate but not letting any Indian player play anything other than IPL is a bit strict in my opinion.”

Trader leader to face action for recording Yogi call

0

A trader leader in Varanasi, Rakesh Jain, has landed in trouble for recording his telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and posting it on social media.

District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma issued a show-cause notice to Jain on Sunday and sought a reply within three days for recording the conversation without permission and posting it as an audio clip on social media, failing which legal action would be initiated against him.

The action impacts the dignity of the constitutional office and privacy of conversation was also breached, the notice said.

Sharma told reporters that “The Chief Minister’s Office has taken serious note of this act and directed the district administration to take necessary action against Jain.”

Jain, who is the city president of the Akhil Bhartiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal, had spoken to the Chief Minister on August 22 and recorded the call and later posted the audio clip on social media.

In the audio, Jain is heard complaining about private hospitals overcharging COVID patients for treatment.

Jain also complained that the District Magistrate does not respond to queries on the portal and has curbed market timings even though the state government has allowed the opening of markets from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Chief Minister is heard assuring Jain that he will look into the matter.

Apart from serving the show cause notice to Jain, the state president of Akhil Bhartiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal has also been asked to initiate necessary action against him for this act.

Regarding grievances of Jain, the District Magistrate said the district administration has no objection over the complaints made against it in the capacity of a traders’ union leader.

Study reveals how immune system deteriorates due to Covid-19

0

In a major study, Australian researchers have identified mechanisms leading to the functional deterioration of the immune system in response to severe viral infections, such as HIV or Covid-19.

It is widely known that severe viral infections and cancer cause impairments to the immune system, including T cells, a process called immune ‘exhaustion’.

According to the study, published in the journal Nature Immunology, overcoming immune exhaustion is a major goal for the development of new therapies for cancer or severe viral infections.

“This is an exciting finding, particularly in the context of Covid-19 as one of the big questions is why some people get severely sick, while others experience mild disease,” said study author Daniel Utzschneider from the University of Melbourne in Australia.

For the findings, the research team focused on the question of when and how T cells lose their function and become ‘exhausted’.

It was previously thought that during severe infections, T cells lost their function slowly and over long periods of time.

This research, however, shows that T cells can be impaired within just a few days. It also identified several new mediators of immune exhaustion that may be targeted in new therapies.

“We looked at both mild and overwhelming Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus infections in mice, which serves as a model for severe viral infections in humans, early after the onset of disease, and identified striking differences at the molecular and functional level,” Utzschneider said.

In response to overwhelming infections that are difficult to eliminate and may become chronic, the team was able to show that T cells down-regulate their function within days, while T cells responding to a weaker infection remained highly functional.

T cells are at the heart of immunotherapy for cancer. Therefore, understanding how a T cell function is impaired is central to improving these therapeutic approaches and applying them to other diseases, such as viral infections, they said.

“These findings are extremely exciting. Our data show that T cells could be manipulated during early stages of severe viral infection to improve their activity,” the study authors noted.

Setback for Kerala govt; HC rules CBI probe into Periya twin murders

0

The Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala on Tuesday suffered a huge setback after a division bench of the Kerala High Court ruled that the CBI will probe the case of two Youth Congress workers murdered near Periya in Kasaragod last year.

Incidentally, it was the Vijayan government which brought in high-profile lawyers to defend them, after a single bench of the High Court earlier directed a CBI probe, quashing the police charge sheet in the case last year.

The Pinarayi Vijayan government had come under fire from various quarters after they decided to approach the division bench against the single bench verdict. The gruesome murders took place on February 17, last year.

The family members of the victims and the Congress party have been demanding a CBI probe into the twin murders alleging that senior CPI-M leaders in the district conspired to eliminate the two young Congress workers. A. Peethambaran, a local CPI-M leader is the prime accused in the case and is under arrest.

Youth Congress workers Krupesh, 19, and Sharath Lal (Joshy), 24, were attacked by three motorcycle-borne men while returning from an event. While Krupesh died at the Kasargod district hospital, Joshy succumbed to injuries on his way to a medical facility in Mangaluru, Karnataka.

The Prime Minister said that local authorities and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on the spot providing all possible assistance.

At least 25 people have been rescued so far from the five-storied building which collapsed in Mahad town on Monday evening. Nearly 100 people lived in the Tariq Garden building situated in the Kajalpura area of the town.

“Saddened by the building collapse… My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their dear ones. I pray the injured recover soon. Local authorities and NDRF teams are at the site of the tragedy, providing all possible assistance,” Modi tweeted.

The building, said to be around six-year-old, was constructed by two Mumbai-based realtors, and crashed around 6.05 p.m., locals said.

Guardian Minister of Raigad, Aditi Tatkare said the building had more than 200 occupants, but many residents might have been outdoors or in markets in the evening when the mishap occurred.

Hamas imposes lockdown after 4 new Covid-19 cases in Gaza

0

The Islamic Hamas movement has imposed a 48-hour lockdown in the Gaza Strip after recording four new cases in the besieged coastal enclave.

“The four cases comprise three males and one female,” Salama Marouf from the Hamas-run information office told reporters on Monday, adding the infected persons are from the same family in the al-Mughazi refugee camp.

Marouf clarified that the lockdown will cover all Gaza’s districts starting from Monday night, including the closure of all official and educational institutions.

“The 48-hour lockdown includes the closure of mosques, wedding halls, markets, and sports clubs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, told reporters that specialized medical teams are working on detecting the source of the new infections and tracing those who contacted them.

Since the outbreak hit the Palestinian territories on March 5, the Hamas-run Ministry of Health recorded 109 Covid-19 cases, all of them arrived in Gaza through crossing points with Israel and Egypt.

It said that 72 patients have recovered and 37 received medical care at quarantine centers outside the populated areas in Gaza, home of more than 2 million Palestinians.

TikTok says it has 700mn monthly users globally, 100mn in US

0

TikTok has more than 700 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally including over 100 million in the US, according to statistics revealed by the short video sharing platform in its lawsuit against the Donald Trump administration.

TikTok filed a lawsuit on Monday challenging an August 6 executive order that threatened to effectively ban the app next month.

The number of global monthly active users could be even higher as the figure represented an update until July.

TikTok said that it surpassed two billion global downloads this month, CNBC reported.

In the US, TikTok has over 50 million daily active users (DAUs).

In a blog post announcing the decision to sue the Trump administration, TikTok said that it employs 1,500 employees in the US, while the company was also planning to create 10,000 more jobs in the country spreading across California, Texas, New York, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, and Washington State.

With 2.7 billion monthly active users as of the second quarter of this year, Facebook is still way ahead of TikTok in terms of the user base.

Saying that it strongly disagrees with the Trump administration’s position that TikTok is a national security threat, the company alleged that the “Administration failed to follow due process”.

The administration neither provided evidence that TikTok was an actual threat, nor justification for its punitive actions, the short video-sharing platform owned by Chinese Unicron ByteDance said.

“To be clear, we far prefer constructive dialogue over litigation. But with the Executive Order threatening to bring a ban on our US operations — eliminating the creation of 10,000 American jobs and irreparably harming the millions of Americans who turn to this app for entertainment, connection, and legitimate livelihoods that are vital especially during the pandemic — we simply have no choice,” TikTok said.

The Trump administration issued another executive order on August 14, giving ByteDance an option to divest its TikTok business in the US within 90 days.

Akshay Oberoi: Actors with box office numbers often get the challenging parts

Actor Akshay Oberoi says people often tell him he has not got his due or that he is not as big a star as he should be. Akshay notes how several great actors made it only after a certain stage in their careers.

“Bollywood is all about the number game. Certain actors who have box office numbers get the opportunity to play roles that they wouldn’t otherwise get. People give them all kinds of challenging parts, and then later on when the performances aren’t good they also trash those artistes. But you can’t blame it, that is the system,” Akshay told IANS.

He says cinema is art made for commerce. “So, there are certain names that sell more than other names. My career has just not gone that way. I have done really interesting films that I really like — you know ‘Pizza’, ‘Gurgaon’, ‘Laal Rang’, ‘Kaalakandi’ — besides the web series I have been a part of. I enjoyed these roles and I think people have, too. So, the number game doesn’t bother me much,” he said.

The actor continued: “I feel every dog has its day. You just have to put your head down and work hard and be the best actor you can be. Then, no one can stop you.”

“People often say ‘you haven’t gotten your due’, or ‘you’re not as big a star as you should be’. I feel there is a long way to go, so, why get caught up in this now? So many great actors only made it at a certain stage, and I will be ready for it when it comes because I would have worked so much and so hard at my craft that no one will be able to take the craft away from me,” he added.

Akshay currently plays a menacing dark character in the web series, “Flesh”. The series tells the story of two completely different girls who survive the ordeal of being victims of the sex and human trafficking industry in India.

He will also be seen in the films “KTina”, the Hindi remake of “Thiruttu Payalaye 2” and a series titled “Magic”.

Microsoft India on Tuesday announced the addition of English (India) and Hindi to its neural text-to-speech service (Neural TTS) language setting.

The two are among the 15 new dialects added to the service, enabled with state-of-the-art AI audio quality.

Microsoft’s Neural TTS can be used to make interactions with chatbots and virtual assistants more natural and engaging.

It is also being used to convert digital texts such as e-books into audiobooks and being deployed for in-car navigation systems, the company said in a statement.

“Through the inclusion of English (India) and Hindi in Neural TTS, we are demonstrating our continued commitment to refining speech and voice-based services for personal and business use in India,” said Sundar Srinivasan, General Manager, Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt Ltd.

Organizations in sectors like telecom, media, and entertainment, retail, manufacturing, and product/ service development are using Neural TTS.

Udaan, India’s largest online business-to-business (B2B) marketplace, is using text-to-speech in Azure to develop conversational interfaces for their voice assistants, Microsoft said.

Neural TTS is a part of Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services and converts text to lifelike speech for a more natural interface.

The service also provides customizable voices, fine-tuned auto control, and flexible deployment from cloud to edge.

With a natural-sounding speech that matches the stress patterns and intonation of human voices, Neural TTS significantly reduces listening fatigue when users are interacting with AI systems.

The service enables human-like natural and clear articulation and uses deep neural networks to overcome the limits of traditional text-to-speech systems in matching the patterns of stress and pitch in spoken language.

Overall, Microsoft TTS supports 110 voices and over 45 languages and variants.
