Large part of me becoming captain has to do with Dhoni observing me: Kohli

0

Virat Kohli started his international career under the captaincy of M.S. Dhoni before taking over the reins of the Indian team himself. Kohli took over the Test captaincy after Dhoni’s abrupt retirement from the longest form of the game in 2014. And in January 2017, he took over the limited-overs captaincy.

Kohli feels that Dhoni’s observation of how he developed over the course of his career went a long way in him eventually taking the mantle. “Becoming captain was not even in my wildest dreams,” Kohli said in an Instagram live video chat with his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin on ‘Reminisce with Ash’.

Kohli said that he always had tactical conversations with Dhoni during matches. “I was always in MS’s ears. He would deny a lot of things but discuss a lot also. I think he got a lot of confidence in me and a large part of me becoming captain has to do with him observing me over a long period of time.

“It can’t be that he goes to the selectors and just says, ‘Make this guy captain.’ He has to take responsibility to identify the person and then slowly see how the guy develops. I think he played a big role in that and that trust you have to build over the course of eight or nine years.”

Under Kohli India have enjoyed a dominant run in Test cricket and recorded ODI series wins in South Africa and Australia.

COVID-19: Record 938 new cases, Tamil Nadu count crosses 21K-mark

0

Tamil Nadu on Saturday reported a record 938 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total tally past the 21K-mark to 21,184.

In a statement issued here, the Health Department said these 938 persons included 82 returnees from other states and countries.

The statement said six Covid-19 patients died, taking the state’s death toll to 160.

State capital Chennai, with its high density of population, continued to see the highest 616 new infections, taking its total tally to 13,980. The Chengalpattu district reported 94 more positive cases.

Members of the medical expert committee said lockdown restrictions may be relaxed in Tamil Nadu, barring Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram districts.

Speaking to the media after a meeting with Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, they said coronavirus infections were high in Chennai and neighboring districts like Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram.

Advocating continuance of the lockdown restrictions in these four districts, they said easing must depend on the extent of coronavirus spread in each district.

As of Saturday, coronavirus cases in Chennai stood at 13,980, followed by Chengalpattu (1,094), Tiruvallur (902) and Kancheepuram (390).

Asserting that resumption of public transport – buses and trains – in Chennai may be dangerous, the experts said these should not be allowed to run. To control the spread, swab testing should be increased, they said.

On Saturday, 12,605 samples were tested, taking the total to 4.79 lakh. The testing of 636 samples is under process.

The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 went up to 1,239.

The total active cases in Tamil Nadu now stands at 9,021.

BCCI recommends Rohit for Khel Ratna; Ishant, Shikhar & Deepti for Arjuna

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has nominated Rohit Sharma for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2020 while Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Deepti Sharma have been nominated for Arjuna Awards.

IANS had earlier reported that Deepti was likely to be nominated for the Arjuna Award for her performance over the last two seasons.

The BCCI in the release said: “The Government of India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had sought invitations for the respective awards with the period of consideration beginning 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2019.

“Rohit Sharma, Team India’s vice-captain in the white-ball format has been a prolific run-getter. Named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019, the stylish opener became the first player in the history of the game to score five ODI centuries in one edition of the World Cup. He is also the first batsman to score four T20I centuries and is the first player to have twin centuries in his maiden appearance as a Test opener.

“Shikhar Dhawan holds the record for the fastest Test century on debut and is the only batsman in the world to have won two consecutive golden bats (for most runs) in the ICC Champions Trophy. He is also the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2000 and 3000 runs in ODIs and second-fastest Indian to score 4000 and 5000 runs in ODIs.

“The youngest Indian to play all three formats of the game, Ishant Sharma has been leading the Indian pace bowling attack and holds the record for most wickets by an Indian pacer outside Asia. A top-class all-rounder, Deepti Sharma holds the record for the highest individual WODI score by an Indian player and is also the only Indian spinner to take 6 WODI wickets.”

Commenting on the picks, Sourav Ganguly, President, BCCI said: “We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees. Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game. We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills.

“Ishant Sharma is the most senior member of the Test squad and his contribution has been vital in the Indian team’s long run as the No. 1 Test side. Fast bowlers are prone to injuries and Ishant has had a fair share of them but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time. Shikhar has been consistently scoring at the top and his performances in the ICC events have been significant. Deepti is a genuine all-rounder and her contribution to the team has been vital.”

Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI said: “There is no bigger honor than representing your country and being nominated for national awards is a recognition of your hard work. In the last five years, Rohit Sharma has not only raised the bar with his individual performances but has also led the Indian team with distinction in Virat Kohli’s absence. Under his captaincy, India famously won the Asia Cup in UAE, the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka and registered many bilateral series wins at home. Rohit has been a perfect team-man and a mentor to youngsters. He deserves the highest sporting honour in the country.

“Ishant Sharma has been a warhorse while Shikhar Dhawan lifts the team’s morale with his fearless approach. Deepti Sharma has contributed a lot in Indian team’s consistent showing in the big-ticket events.”

Arun Singh Dhumal, Honorary Treasurer, BCCI said: “Receiving a national award is a huge honor. It is a culmination of your on-field performances and your character off the field. Indian cricketers have shown the competitive spirit on the ground and have come forward to help the country in this battle against the coronavirus.

“They have taken part in awareness campaigns, donated money and food grains to relief funds and charities and also connected with their fans through social media. The last Indian cricketer to win the Khel Ratna was Virat Kohli and I hope Rohit Sharma too, gets this top award as he thoroughly deserves it.

“Ishant Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have justified their talent and put in performances that their fans can be proud of. Deepti Sharma has contributed both with the bat and ball and deserves her nomination. I extend my best wishes to all the nominated cricketers.”

#BoycottChineseProducts: Bollywood joins the online campaign

0

Several Bollywood personalities including Arshad Warsi, Milind Soman and Ranvir Shorey have joined the ongoing “Boycott China” campaign on social media.

Warsi took to Twitter and shared that he is consciously going to avoid using Chinese goods.

“I am consciously going to stop using everything that is Chinese. As they are a part of most of the things we use, it will take time but I know, one day I’ll be Chinese free. You should try it too,” he wrote.

Actor-model Milind Soman said he is no longer using the Chinese short-video making application TikTok. “Am no longer on TikTok. #BoycottChineseProducts,” tweeted Soman.

Actor Ranvir Shorey simply wrote: “Bilkul. Beshaq. #BoycottChina. #CKMKB.”

The hashtags #BoycottChineseProducts and #BoycottChina started trending after educator and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, whose life inspired the Aamir Khan-starrer “3 Idiots”, shared a video on YouTube urging all to avoid Chinese goods amid the growing tensions between India and China in Ladakh. Netizens and a string of known personalities alike have followed Wangchuk’s lead.

Among them is television actress Kamya Punjabi requested everyone to use only Indian goods.

“I never had such apps on my phone. Would like to request all who have commercials attached with such chinese products to use alternative Be Indian buy Indian #BoycottChineseProducts,” Kamya tweeted.

Writer Raaj Shaandilyaa asked everyone to join the “Boycott China” movement.

“Boycott “MADE IN CHINA” movement ka hissa bane… aur apne desh ki pragati main yogdaan dein. Jai Hind Jai Bharat. (be a part of the boycott Made In China movement and help in the prosperity of your country.) #BoycottMadeInChina,” Shaandilyaa tweeted.

Celebrity photographer Atul Kasbekar praised US President Donald Trump, who gave a strong speech on Friday against China.

Kasbekar wrote: “You can make all the memes you want about Pres. Trump but you have to admire the guts he’s shown in taking on the Chinese govt. Fact is they’ve shown no sense of accountability for the pandemic and someone needed to call them out. Rest of the world should join in isolating them.”

New tech can map cholesterol metabolism in brain

0

A team of researchers led by Swansea University in the UK has developed new technology to monitor cholesterol in brain tissue which could uncover its relation to neurodegenerative disease and pave the way for the development of new treatments.

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, in animal models shows the major locations of cholesterol in the brain and what molecules it can be converted to.

“Although our work was with a mouse, the technology can similarly be used in humans in a research lab or a clinical setting, and could have revolutionary value when linked to neurosurgery,” said Professor William Griffiths who co-led the study.

Dysregulated cholesterol metabolism is linked to a number of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and motor neuron disease.

It is known that cholesterol is not evenly distributed across different brain regions.

However, there has been no technology available to map cholesterol metabolism in defined locations of the brain at microscopic levels and to visualize how it changes in pathological niches in the brain.

In the new study, researchers described an advanced mass spectrometry imaging platform to reveal spatial cholesterol metabolism in mouse brain at micrometer resolution from tissue slices.

The researchers mapped not only cholesterol but also biologically active metabolites arising from cholesterol turnover.

For example, they found that 24S-hydroxycholesterol, the major cholesterol metabolite in the brain, is about 10 times more abundant in the striatum than in the cerebellum, two regions involved in different ways involuntary movement and cognition.

“Tissue excised during surgery could rapidly be profiled by our method in-clinic and used to distinguish healthy from diseased tissue, informing the surgeon on the next step of the operation,” Griffiths said.

According to co-author Professor Yuqin Wang, this technology which precisely locates molecules in the brain will further our understanding of the complexity of brain function and how it changes in neurodegenerative disorders”.

Repeal of Art 370 tops MHA’s 1-yr achievement list, Covid figures on 5th

0

The historic decision to abrogate Article 370 which allowed special status to the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state and 35A find a top place in the one-year achievement list prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Issued on completion of the Modi 2.0 government’s one year, the 12-point achievement list, however, puts the government’s efforts to contain the ongoing worldwide novel coronavirus pandemic on the 5th position.

Over 1.73 lakh people are affected with the deadly disease with reports of 4,971 deaths across the country so far amid a nationwide lockdown which has continued for the last 67 days.

Opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, strict action on terror and insurgency and focus on the North East followed the abrogation of Article 370 in descending order.

The achievements talk about the Union Cabinet’s approval for further modification of the applicability of domicile conditions to all levels of jobs in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir under the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Decentralisation and Recruitment) Act.

Pride of the nation, the security forces, gets sixth position followed by Census of India-2021, national unity, women’s safety, visa facilities for foreigners, international cooperation, and a category that mentions important bills passed in Parliament, including the Citizenship Amendment Act, which together find the 12th position.

Empowerment of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) with extraterritorial jurisdiction and declaration of Maulana Masood Azhar, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Dawood Ibrahim as terrorists after legislative amendment were counted among its achievements by the MHA.

The MHA also said the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was set up by it to oversee the construction of the temple at Ayodhya following a Supreme Court order.

Referring to the “proactive measures” taken to control the novel coronavirus pandemic, the MHA said it was declared as a notified disaster on March 14 for the purpose of providing assistance under State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) placed at the disposal of respective state governments, augmenting their resources.

It listed the lockdown measures which first came into effect from March 25 — a day after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared 21-day restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19. It was first extended till May 3, again till May 17 and till May 31 for the third time.

Explaining its measures in fight against the global pandemic, the MHA mentioned that it has set up a 24×7 control room in the North Block as a nerve centre for monitoring, grievance redress and daily status report collection from states and Union Territories (UTs). It is also attending to the queries of states and UTs or other ministries on lockdown measures.

The MHA also issued a series of guidelines to ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential goods, providing food and shelter to the homeless and migrant laborers.

It dispatched Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to states severely affected by COVID-19 to make on-the-spot assessment of the situation and issue necessary directions to local authorities.

The MHA has issued SOPs to ensure inter-state movement of migrant workers and other people stranded at different places.

Movement of migrant workers during the lockdown has become a humanitarian crisis with thousands of them walking on roads and railway tracks, ignoring government pleas to stay back at the place where they are.

At least 16 such people were mowed down by a goods train in Maharashtra, while at least 100 others were killed in road accidents in different parts of the country.

India signed the Kartarpur Sahib corridor agreement with Pakistan on October 24, 2019.

Indian pilgrims of all faiths are now allowed to undertake round-the-year visa-free travel through the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor to Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib (in Pakistan), one of the most revered shrines of Sikhs.

The MHA said the National Investigation Agency Act was an amendment under which the anti-terror probe agency was empowered with extraterritorial jurisdiction for investigation of terrorism-related offences taking place outside India, in which Indian property or citizens are victims.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act was also amended, empowering the Central government to designate an individual as terrorist and seize his properties.

After the amendment, Maulana Masood Azhar, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Dawood Ibrahim were proscribed as terrorists.

The MHA said Left wing violence has been down from 2,258 in 2009 to 833 in 2018. The number of deaths dropped from 1,005 in 2009 to 240 in 2018 and the number of districts affected by Naxal violence reduced from 96 in 2010 to 60 in 2018.

The initial list did not include the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as an achievement.

However, the MHA later in the day issued a revised list of achievements incorporating the CAA and a few other legislations approved by Parliament in the last one year.

Meanwhile, a Home Ministry official said a few achievements of the MHA could not figure in the initial list.

The enactment of the CAA led to protests in different parts of the country and deaths of over 20 people in police firing and other violence.

The objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities — Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian — from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The other MHA-piloted legislations include the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, 2019 under which the SPG would now provide proximate security to only the Prime Minister and his immediate family members residing with him at his official residence.

The MHA said the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Assam, was published on August 31, 2019 and a machinery was created for detection and deportation of illegal immigrants.

Emergence of response support system (ERSS) — Dial 112 — a single successfully implemented number has been launched and over Rs 358 crore allocated by the MHA under Nirbhaya fund for women’s safety.

Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) in criminal matters between India and Maldives signed on September 3 last year and liberalization of medical visa regime for foreigners is among the MHA list of achievements, among others.

Deepika Padukone’s Instagram story has ‘Mahanati’ poster

It is already known that Mahanati director Nag Ashwin is working on a film with a world-class appeal for Prabhas as the lead in it. But apart from the rumors on what could be the story backdrop of this movie, there are more speculations popping up each day about the heroine in it.

Though the official confirmation is yet to be made, Deepika Padukone appears to have signed in to pair up Prabhas in Nag Ashwin’s direction. Here is an indirect leak from the actress with today’s Insta story.

Deepika Padukone’s Instagram story has ‘Mahanati’ poster, asking her followers to ‘watch it now’, where she also tagged Nag Aswin to it. Nag too acknowledged it by calling it ‘a cool notification to wake up to’, which almost confirms their association for a project.

Many a time, our directors try to hide the star cast they want in their film, for the surprise or due to the wait for confirmation. But tagging on social media stories, birthday wishes, and leaked pictures are always hints we need to catch. Well, it would be great to see Deepika and Prabhas on screen together and let us see if Nag confirms it soon.

No total lockdown in Karnataka on Sunday

Karnataka will not observe a total lockdown on Sunday, unlike a week ago, an official said on Saturday. Last Sunday, the Karnataka government had observed a total lockdown.

“On the request of the public and in the interest of the state population, there will be no total lockdown on Sunday,” Chief Secretary T.M. Vijay Bhaskar said in a statement.

Following the order, at least 3,500 buses of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will operate on Sunday.

On Friday, Karnataka recorded 248 new Covid-19 cases, the highest single-day rise.

Meanwhile, the state Health and Family Welfare Department has decided to cease issuing morning Covid-19 bulletin.

“Due to an increase in the number of cases in the last few days and as being done in other states of the country, it has been decided by the task force that a mid-day media release will not be issued,” said an official statement.

NHAI plans to develop Model Stretches in every state

0

In order to exhibit the model stretches of National Highways as per norms, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to develop 57 stretches of NH (1,735 km) across the country near each state capital.

These Model Stretches will also serve as a platform to educate the highway engineers of the country, including state PWD engineers.

These stretches will have all the required safety and aesthetic features like road signs, road markings, road furniture & safety items, proper junctions and entry/exit points, functional drains, pedestrian facilities, street lighting, plantation & landscaping, toll plaza, user facilities & wayside amenities.

The stretches will also be equipped with CCTV cameras at all vulnerable locations, no black spots to avoid accidents and eco-friendly measures. The idea is to make the highway stretch look like a perfect textbook version of a model road.

Some of the NH sections identified for development as Model Stretches are Dausa to Jaipur, Jalandhar to Amritsar, Srinagar to Banihal, Varanasi Ring Road, Chennai Bypass, MP/MH border to Nagpur including Nagpur Bypass, Brahmaputra Bridge to Guwahati.

The NHAI has issued policy guidelines to help its regional officers identify and plan the development of Model Stretches and complete the work in a timely manner.

Sufficient financial powers have been delegated to take quick decisions in the matter.

The NHAI HQ will be monitoring the progress through an online e-portal (Data Lake), where pictures/videos of each Model Stretch would be uploaded apart from other related information, a statement from the authority said.

Indore sees fresh spurt in cases

0

Indore got a parting kick on Saturday as Lockdown 4 ends with 87 new patients testing positive by 4 p.m. The tally of patients has gone up to 3,431 while Indore has recorded 126 corona deaths since March 5.

In the capital, Bhopal new cases rose by 43 by Saturday evening taking the total so far to 1,534. The state government is expected to take a call on fresh curbs at the end of the current lockdown with a possibility of the lockdown being extended by two weeks.

While markets are abuzz in Bhopal since Saturday morning, people in Indore are treading more cautiously.

Liquor shops remained shut in the three Red Zone districts of Indore, Bhopal and Ujjain. The confrontation between the liquor cartel and the government continued with the licensees refusing to obey the order to reopen the shops in the Green Zones.

The contractors are adamant about deciding their stand only after the High Court gives its verdict on June 2. The government has gone back on considering the liquor contractors’ demand to cut down the license fee in view of the stalled business due to the lockdown. Almost 80 percent of the liquor shops have remained closed due to the stalemate.

Meanwhile, Indore Collector Manish Singh has ordered spot fines on those violating lockdown rules about wearing masks, keeping a social distance, carrying sanitizer or not spitting in public places. The fine ranges from Rs 100 to 10,000.

Indore district will now be divided into 3 zones — rural zone, urban zone and central zone — as part of the plan to ease the lockdown from June 1.

The 29 villages around the town will be allowed more activity, urban areas outside the containment zones will also be allowed some concessions while the central zone, most affected by Covid 19, will see stiffer conditions under the lockdown.

The rising number of patients in Bhopal has led to new hotspots being marked. Jahangirabad, Mangalwara, Hanumanganj police station area of old Bhopal have reported the most cases recently. On Friday, 15 new corona positive cases were reported in these areas.

Bhopal Collector Tarun Pithode revised business hours for shops from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Saturday onwards and ordered relaxation under section 144 for the free movement of the public.

CM KCR has inaugurated the Kondapochamma Sagar reservoir

0

Telangana CM KCR has inaugurated the Kondapochamma Sagar reservoir at the Markook pump house under his assembly constituency Gajwel on Friday. This inauguration ceremony was also graced by Sri Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swami. As the water got pumped into the reservoir, KCR along with his wife offered traditional prayers and flowers.

After this, KCR addressed the media and added the true essence of Telangana formation i.e, in providing water to the region is fulfilled. Then KCR made a statement that is being highlighted a lot. “In another week or so, we are going to announce big news. This is going to be great news for Telangana farmers,” said KCR.

Adding more about it, the Telangana CM said, no government has ever made such announcement for farmers neither in India nor in world. “Just wait for a few more days and I will reveal everything,” said KCR.

This led to a huge anticipating among Telangana farmers so as what could it be? Interestingly KCR used the word ‘financially’ in his statements and this sparked a debate.

Is it a special budget that the Telangana government is going to come up for farmers and agriculture sector in the state? Seems like even TRS leaders have no clue about it and so it is all in KCR’s head to break the suspense.

Kohli is ranked at number 66 with estimated earnings of $26 million

0

India skipper Virat Kohli is the only cricketer to feature in Forbes’ list of the top 100 highest paid athletes in the world for the year 2020.

Kohli is ranked at number 66 with estimated earnings of $26 million, as he made a jump of over 30 places from 2019. According to the magazine, Kohli earned a whopping $24 million from his endorsements, while just $2 million of the total estimate came from his salary and winnings.

Basketball players led all sports with 35 players among the top 100. American football occupied 31 spots, none higher than six-times Super Bowl champion Tom Brady ($45 million) who was ranked 25th.

Soccer was the next most represented sport with 14 players, followed by tennis (six), boxing and mixed marital arts (five), golf (four), motor racing (three), and baseball and cricket with one each.

“The coronavirus pandemic triggered salary cuts for soccer stars Messi and Ronaldo, clearing the way for a tennis player to rank as the world’s highest-paid athlete for the first time,” said Kurt Badenhausen, Senior Editor, Forbes, reported the magazine’s official website.

Roger Federer became the world’s highest-paid athlete for 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic knocked soccer’s Lionel Messi off top spot, according to the annual Forbes list released on Friday.

Soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar took spots 2-4, with the NBA’s LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant at Nos. 5-7, followed by Tiger Woods at No. 8. NFL players Kirk Cousins and Carson Wentz round out the top 10. Two women were in the top 100, both tennis players.

Coco Gauff posted a TikTok video on her Twitter feed

0

Rising US tennis star Coco Gauff has added her voice to those expressing outrage at the death of an unarmed African American in Minnesota who was in police hands.

Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who can be seen in video kneeling on the neck of a handcuffed George Floyd for at least five minutes, was charged with murder in Floyd’s death on Friday as violent protests continued around the country.

Gauff, 16, posted a TikTok video on her Twitter feed, juxtaposing an image of herself clad in a black hoodie with photos of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin and others.

Arbery, a 25-year-old African American, was killed on February 23 while running in a residential neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia.

Taylor an emergency medical technician who was black, was shot and killed by police who burst into her home in Kentucky in March.

Martin was a high school student when he was shot in 2012 in a killing that helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Am I next?” a caption asks, as Gauff slowly raises her face and hands to the camera.

Gauff burst on the international tennis scene last year at Wimbledon where she came through qualifying and beat her idol Venus Williams in the first round before exiting in the round of 16.

Solid performances at the US Open and the Australian Open in January saw her crack the top 50 in the world rankings before she turned 16 on March 13.

She is among the many athletes to speak out in the wake of George’s death, a group that includes NBA superstar LeBron James and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick — who was effectively ostracized from the NFL after his kneeling protests of racial injustice in 2016.

As authorities sought to quell violent protests in Minneapolis, Kaepernick said Friday his Know Your Rights Camp was launching an initiative to fund the legal defense of arrested protesters.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz decried the “institutional racism” in the United States that makes the experience of African-Americans so different from his own as a white man.

“I don’t understand the society we live in that doesn’t value all human life,” Wentz said.

Joe Burrow, the collegiate star who was taken first overall in the NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals last month, urged more white people to get involved.

“The black community needs our help,” he tweeted. “They have been unheard for far too long. Open your ears, listen and speak. This isn’t politics, this is human rights.”

Kai Havertz broke another Bundesliga record

Exciting youngster Kai Havertz broke another Bundesliga record on Friday after scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory at Freiburg which moved Bayer Leverkusen into third place.

Kai Havertz, 20, became the first player in the history of the league to reach 35 goals before turning 21 years old eight minutes after the break, when he combined with Leon Bailey before squeezing home under intense pressure from Dominique Heintz.

The dynamic German was already the youngest player to reach 50 and 100 appearances in the German top flight and became the youngest ever player to score a league goal for Leverkusen in 2017.

Havertz’s goal was his fifth in his four appearance since the Bundesliga returned from its coronavirus-enforced break and puts Leverkusen a point ahead of fourth-placed RB Leipzig, who travel to Cologne on Monday night.

They are also three points ahead of Borussia Moenchengladbach in fifth ahead of their match with Union Berlin on Sunday.

Havertz’s goal was the first shot on target in a largely drab encounter in which Freiburg could have snatched at least a point.

Lucas Hoeler missed a glaring opportunity for the hosts two minutes before the break, pushing wide when sent through one-on-one with Leverkusen stopper Lukas Hradecky.

And chasing an equaliser late on, Nils Petersen forced Hradecky to save the three points for Leverkusen with a fine first time strike that the goalkeeper did well to tip away.

CWI announced 50% reduction in salaries

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Saturday announced a temporary 50 per cent reduction in salaries and cricket funding across the entire regional cricket system, effective from the start of July due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which resulted in the suspension of all the cricketing activities across the globe since March.

“This decision has been necessary in the face of debilitating economic challenges which have resulted from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. With no international cricket currently being played anywhere in the world, and with great uncertainty of when regular cricket activity will resume, CWI – like many other international sporting organisations worldwide – is facing a significant loss of income, whilst also being uncertain of the long-term impact of the crisis on our operations,” the CWI said in a statement.

During Thursday’s teleconference, CWI’s Board of Directors received recommendations from the Financial Strategy Advisory Committee (FSAC).

The FSAC was formed in April by CWI president Ricky Skerritt, to make recommendations on how CWI could best manage its resources in order to continue its core business over the next few months in view of the changing and uncertain economic environment created by the global pandemic COVID-19. These recommended measures followed close consultation with all stakeholders.

“Cricket is the beating heart of our region for many individuals, communities, and economies. This pandemic is hurting every West Indian and this decision to cut staff and player incomes has been a very difficult one to make; one that will impact so many members of the cricketing family around the Caribbean,” Skerritt said.

“This business continuity plan, unfortunately, requires all stakeholders to make a huge sacrifice, but I am confident that it won’t be long before CWI will be in a position to ensure that the sport we love can restart and be enjoyed once again by the thousands of cricket fans across the region and diaspora,” he added.

CWI has kept staff, players, umpires and coaches on full-pay since the outbreak of COVID-19 and have tried our best to avoid any cuts for as long as possible. CWI hopes that these temporary measures will only be in place for not more than three to six months.

These measures will also include a 50 per cent reduction in funding for Territorial Boards, Territorial Board Franchises and WIPA, as well as a 50 per cent cut in all retainers and allowances for Directors and Executive management.

Earlier in the day, CWI gave its approval for a ”bio-secure” Test tour to England.

West Indies were first slated to play three Tests against England in June, but the original starting date of the series was pushed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is looking to go ahead with the series against West Indies in July and then the Three Lions will play three Tests against Pakistan.

BJP celebrates the first anniversary of Modi’s second term

As the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party celebrates the first anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second term, several opposition leaders attacked the government today amid coronavirus pandemic.

The government should not lose touch with ground realities, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP chief Mayawati said. “Many claims have been made today as the ruling BJP government completes one year but it would be great if they don’t lose touch with the ground realities. This government has been surrounded by multiple controversies. They should seriously dwell upon these issues in the interest of the nation,” she wrote in Hindi.

“Of the 130 crore Indians, hardships of a majority of poor people, those who are unemployed, migrant workers and women have increased multi-fold. In such a scenario, the government should review their policies with an open mind. Instead of hiding gaps, if there are any, they should work on them. The BSP wants to give this suggestion in the interest of the nation,” the 64-year-old BSP leader wrote.

In a tweet in Hindi, poll-strategist Prashant Kishor attacked PM Modi’s call for “Atma Nirbhar” or “self-reliant” India in the fight against the pandemic, which has affected over 1.7 lakh people since it began. “#1YearofModi2 – #Atmamughda sarkar,” he wrote in Hindi, calling the government “self-conceited”.

PM Modi gave the call for a self-sufficient nation earlier this month as he announced a fiscal stimulus of Rs 20 lakh crore to tackle the outbreak.

The Congress in a statement titled “Helpless People, Heartless Government” said that India saw a “year of disappointment, disastrous management and diabolical pain”.

“And at the start of the seventh year, India stands at a crossroads. It’s citizens exhausted by the weight of this Government’s sins, ineptitude and callous insensitivity to the widespread suffering,” the party wrote.

Neil: There will be only one Mr. India and that is Anil Kapoor

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh says there can be only one Mr. India and that is actor Anil Kapoor, and only one Mogambo and that is the late Amrish Puri.

Neil took to Instagram and shared a quirky clip where he is seen with Anil Kapoor as well as his filmmaker brother Naman Nitin Mukesh.

“Who else is a big fan of this Iconic film that completes 34 years and still so fresh in our minds. There will always be just one Mr.India that is @anilskapoor sir and one Mogambo, Late Amrish puri sir. Sridevi mam was the heart of the film. The songs by Laxmikant Pyarelal ji were outstanding,” wrote Neil, about the 1987 sci-fi comedy that stars Anil Kapoor with the late Sridevi. The film celebrated 34 years of release a few days back.

“Direction by @shekharkapur sir, simply brilliant, that after all these years we still remember the film so well. #mymoviefortheday,” Neil captioned the clip, which initially sees Neil and Naman. Anil appears as soon as a red lens is applied onto the frame.

The reference is to the fact that in the film Anil Kapoor played Mr India, who had a special wrist band that could make him invisible, except when he was in red light.

Neil’s last on-screen outing was the 2019 film “Bypass Road”, which was scripted and produced by him. The film marked the directorial debut of his brother Naman Nitin Mukesh.
