In response to the BRS MLC Kavitha arrest, BRS working president KT Rama Rao criticized the BJP-led Central government for what he termed as a concerning pattern of power abuse and misuse of institutions for political vendettas over the past decade. Taking to social media, Rama Rao questioned the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) swift action, particularly when legal proceedings were still pending review.
Expressing confidence in the judicial process, Rama Rao emphasized the party’s commitment to pursuing legal avenues for justice. He also announced his decision to stand in solidarity with Kavitha’s family by staying with them overnight, demonstrating personal support amidst the challenging situation. Rama Rao is expected to travel to Delhi the following day, where he will continue to coordinate legal efforts and engage with relevant stakeholders from Hyderabad.
Abuse of power and institutional misuse to settle political scores is something that has become increasingly common with BJP Govt in last 10 years

The Nifty experienced a downturn after four consecutive weeks of gains, dropping by 2.1% for the week and forming a bearish engulfing pattern on the weekly charts, according to Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research at HDFC Securities. Jasani noted that the Nifty faced selling pressure on rallies and anticipated this trend to persist.
On Friday, the Nifty declined, retracing its steps from the previous session’s rally. The index closed the day at 22,023.35, down by 123 points or 0.56%, while the Sensex concluded with a loss of 454 points or 0.62%, ending at 72,643.43.
High cash market volumes on the NSE, amounting to Rs 1.50 lakh crore, were supported by FTSE index rebalancing volumes towards the session’s end. Despite this, the smallcap index finished positively, with an advance-decline ratio of 0.83:1, as observed by Jasani.
In the global market scenario, Asian markets largely mirrored the downtrend seen on Wall Street, prompted by a significant rise in US wholesale prices, which dashed hopes for potential interest rate cuts. On the other hand, European stocks were poised for their eighth consecutive week of gains, driven by the expectation of imminent interest rate reductions in the euro area.
Vaibhav Vidwani, a Research Analyst at Bonanza Portfolio, highlighted the impact of mutual funds releasing stress test findings, leading investors to withdraw from small and midcap equities. Concerns surrounding inflated valuations and SEBI’s scrutiny of mutual funds serving the industry contributed to the recent decline in mid and small-cap stocks, dampening investor sentiment.
Additionally, fears have arisen regarding the buildup of froth in small and midcap mutual fund schemes following SEBI’s directive to AMFI for enhanced disclosures to safeguard investor interests. Vidwani noted that amidst challenging market conditions, stress tests aim to determine the earliest possible time for fund managers to liquidate holdings in response to investor redemption requests.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a new rule requiring the use of stop-clocks between overs in limited-overs international matches, starting from June 1, 2024. This rule will be implemented at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. The decision comes after a successful trial period, during which stop-clocks were tested in men’s limited-overs international matches.
Originally introduced on a trial basis in December 2023, the stop-clock initiative was aimed at expediting match proceedings. The trial period, initially set to run until April 2024, showed promising results, with approximately 20 minutes saved per ODI match.
The ICC has now made the use of stop-clocks mandatory in all Full Member ODI and T20I matches, starting from June 1, 2024. According to the rule, the fielding side must commence a new over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over. An electronic clock, counting down from 60 to zero, will be displayed on the ground, with the third umpire responsible for initiating the countdown.
Failure to adhere to the 60-second limit will result in two warnings for the fielding side, with subsequent breaches leading to a five-run penalty per incident. However, there are exceptions to this rule, such as when a new batter enters the wicket between overs, during an official drinks interval, or when umpires approve on-field treatment for an injury.
The stop-clock rule will not apply in circumstances where time is lost due to factors beyond the control of the fielding side. This initiative aims to ensure smoother and more efficient match management in limited-overs international cricket.
Telangana Lok Sabha Polls: Discontent Among Party Workers
The decision by BJP leadership to nominate recent entrants to the party as candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Telangana has sparked significant discontent among party leaders and workers. This move has left loyal workers feeling sidelined, despite years of dedicated service to the party.
Out of the 15 candidates announced so far, 12 have recently joined the BJP from rival political parties. Even the allocation of seats for Warangal and Khammam is expected to favor newcomers to the party, namely former BRS MLA Aroori Ramesh and former MLA Jalagam Venkat Rao, respectively. With the exception of Secunderabad, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad seats, the majority have been bestowed upon recent party converts.
Disillusionment Among Senior Leaders
Seasoned party leaders, who had hoped to be considered for nomination, find themselves crestfallen as they watch new entrants take precedence. Their aspirations of leveraging the Modi wave to secure victory have been shattered by the party’s decision to overlook them. This reliance on turncoats while sidelining its own seasoned leaders exposes the party’s inherent weaknesses.
Political Strategy or Oversight?
While some party insiders argue that this strategy is aimed at maximizing electoral gains, others express concern that it neglects the strengths of homegrown candidates. They fear that the BJP’s heavy reliance on Modi’s popularity without due consideration for candidate quality could backfire in the long run.
Party Sources Defend Decision
Party sources, however, defend the decision, asserting that the primary goal is to secure victory in as many seats as possible. They argue that the party prioritizes winning candidates over their party affiliation, emphasizing the imperative of achieving electoral success.
Rising Opposition Within the Ranks
Despite the party’s rationale, palpable discontent is evident in various constituencies. In Zaheerabad, BJP leaders protested against the nomination of former BRS MP BB Patil. Similarly, in Adilabad, former MP Ramesh Rathod and former MLA Rathod Bapu Rao oppose the candidacy of G Nagesh, a recent BJP recruit.
Potential Internal Friction
The denial of renomination to sitting MP Soyam Bapu Rao has further fueled dissent, with Rao vowing to contest independently. Concerns mount as top BJP leaders in Adilabad district express reluctance to support the official candidate, potentially jeopardizing the party’s prospects in the region.
Challenges Ahead
Even in Mahabubnagar, where senior party leader DK Aruna has been fielded, the situation remains uncertain. Former MP AP Jitender Reddy, overlooked for the BJP ticket, has been approached by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to contest on a Congress ticket, adding to the party’s challenges.
Local Dynamics at Play
In many constituencies, party candidates may struggle to garner support from local BJP leaders, who reportedly lack enthusiasm for their victory. This underscores the need for the BJP to navigate internal dynamics effectively to secure electoral success in Telangana.
