Twitter bans over 57K accounts for promoting child porn, nudity in India

0

Facing a massive controversy over the proliferation of child pornography on its platform in India, Twitter said on Saturday that it banned 57,643 accounts in the country for promoting child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity, and allied content between July 26 and August 25.

Earlier this week, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal said the replies received from Twitter regarding the child pornography complaints were incomplete and the Commission was not satisfied with them.

Maliwal had on September 20 summoned Twitter India Policy Head and Delhi Police over tweets depicting child pornography and rape videos of women and children on the micro-blogging platform.

Taking suo moto cognizance of several tweets openly depicting videos and photographs of sexual acts involving children, the Commission said that most of the tweets portrayed children completely naked and many of them also depicted brutal rape and other non-consensual sexual activities with children and women.

Twitter, in its monthly report in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, also said that it received 1,088 complaints from users in India in the same time frame through its grievance redressal mechanisms.

Acting on the complaints, the company took action against 41 URLs.

In addition, “we processed 76 grievances which were appealing Twitter account suspensions. These were all resolved and the appropriate responses were sent”, said the company.

“We overturned none of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation,” it added.

Twitter also received 15 requests related to general questions about accounts during this reporting period.

The company said it “does not tolerate any material that features or promotes child sexual exploitation — whether in Direct Messages or elsewhere throughout the service”.

In India, the users complained the most about online abuse and harassment (544) and hateful conduct (502), among other categories.

Meanwhile, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk this week expressed grave concerns over reports about the presence of tweets soliciting child pornography on Twitter.

Reacting to a report on how major advertising brands have pulled out from Twitter as their promotion posts appeared alongside child porn tweets, Musk said: “Extremely concerning.”

The Minister said the procurement would continue till November 30 and all agencies would make procurement of Grade A paddy at the MSP of Rs 2,060 per quintal, while the common variety at Rs 2,040 a quintal.

The state has made arrangements for the procurement of 191 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, while the Central government has fixed the target at 184.45 lakh metric tonnes for the state, an official statement said.

Principal Secretary (Food Supplies) Rahul Bhandari said the Punjab Mandi Board has notified 1,804 regular mandis during the season, which have been allotted amongst government procurement agencies and 364 temporary purchase centers have also been notified to avoid a glut.

The Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Department has set up a state-level control room to ensure that no farmer encounters any hurdle in selling the products.

He said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the Cash Credit Limit worth Rs 36,999 crore to the state government.

As per the Punjab Custom Milling Policy approved by the Cabinet, e-checking of all rice mills is being done before registration and allotment and 4,315 mills have been inspected and online allotment of 3,500 mills has been done.

National Games: I desperately wanted to take part in Gujarat 2022, says injured Bajrang Punia

0

Out of the circuit as he is recuperating from a head injury, Olympic and World Championship bronze medallist Bajrang Punia is missing being on the mat at the 36th National Games here.

A freak head injury, resulting in five stitches at the World Championships in Belgrade, ended Bajrang Punia’s chances of participating in Gujarat 2022.

But despite that, the ace grappler made an appearance at the wrestling arena in Mahatma Mandir on Saturday, as a guest.

“The National Games is the only tournament in which I haven’t participated till now. I have been part of many international tournaments, but miss being a part of the National Games. In 2015, I was training in the US and couldn’t be a part, and this time around, the stitches on my head didn’t heal on time,” he said.

“After the World Championship, there was very little time to recover. I desperately wanted to be a part of the Games here,” Bajrang added.

The 28-year-old is highly impressed with the efforts put in by the organizers of the 36th National Games, saying that the standard here matches the international tournaments, he has been a part of.

“Congratulations to Gujarat for grabbing the opportunity to host the National Games with both hands. At the same time, I appreciate the Prime Minister’s effort and his keen interest in sports due to which he came to launch the Games,” he was quoted as saying by the organizing committee in a release on Saturday.

The Asian Games gold medallist feels that the National Games will provide the right platform for upcoming players to showcase their talent.

“For the younger players participating in the Games, I believe this will boost their confidence and give them a feel of the international exposure. Even the hotels and the food they are being served is very impressive,” he said.

On the personal front, Punia said that the stitches have healed and he is back to training as preparations for the next Olympic cycle start for the four-time World Championship medallist.

“The injury has gradually healed, and I’m back in training. There are no major immediate tournaments but in 2023, we have the Pro Wrestling League, Asian Championship, World Championship, and the Asian Games. The qualifications for the Paris Olympics will start at the Worlds, and the focus has now shifted towards the Olympic cycle,” he said.

“We will be training mostly in India for the next one month or so, before deciding on exposure trips, it could be Russia or the US,” he said before signing off.

Trisha read all five volumes of the epic for her role in ‘PS 1’

South star Trisha Krishnan read all five volumes of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s book Ponniyin Selvan to prepare for her role in Mani Ratnam’s movie ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I'(PS 1).

She said: “When we started shooting for the film, the entire world was hit by the pandemic which led to a lockdown. So, during that period, I read all 5 volumes of the novel. I used to believe that historic fictional novels are hard to read but this was very interesting.”

The 39-year-old actress rose to fame with Tamil movies such as ‘Saamy’, ‘Ghilli’, ‘Aaru’ and she also acted in several Telugu projects including ‘Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana’ and ‘Athadu’.

She appeared on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show along with ‘PS 1’ co-stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Sobhita Dhulipala.

She spoke further on her preparations for the role: “After finishing one book, you will be compelled to pick the next one, it’s that intriguing. But the novel and the film are quite different because the way Mani sir beautifully summarised 5 books into 2 films is beyond my imagination. So, I call this film Mani Ratnam’s ‘PS 1’.”

Vikram also added to the conversation in a hilarious way: “Half the payment was for reading the book!”

‘The Kapil Sharma Show airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

“In addition to reports from our users, we invest heavily in fighting harmful content online and use technology to detect and remove it from our platforms,” it said in its monthly compliance report.

The company said that as part of its automated detection processes, it removed 551,659 accounts in the country.

“We invest heavily in fighting harmful content online and use technology to detect and remove it from our platforms. This includes using automated detection processes for some of our products to prevent the dissemination of harmful content such as child sexual abuse material and violent extremist content,” said Google.

In accordance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules), Google, along with other social media platforms, is mandated to publish monthly transparency reports with details of complaints received from users in India and the actions taken, as well as removal actions taken as a result of automated detection.

Under the new IT rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms — with more than 5 million users — have to publish monthly compliance reports.

Record Rs 1,47,686cr gross GST revenue collected in Sep

0

The gross GST revenue collected in the month of September 2022 is Rs 1,47,686 crore which is nearly 26 percent higher than the GST revenue in the same month last year.

As per the Ministry of Finance, during the month, revenues from the import of goods were 39 percent higher and the revenues from domestic transactions (including import of services) are 22 percent higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year.

This is the eighth month and for the seventh month in a row now, the monthly GST revenues have been more than the Rs 1.4 lakh crore mark. The growth in GST revenue till September 2022 over the same period last year is 27 percent, continuing to display very high buoyancy.

During the month of August 2022, 7.7 crore e-way bills were generated, which was marginally higher than 7.5 crore in July 2022, said the Ministry on Saturday.

This month witnessed the second highest single-day collection of Rs 49,453 crore on September 20 with the second highest number of 8.77 lakh challans filed, next only to Rs 57,846 crore collected on July 20 2022 through 9.58 lakh challans, which pertained to the end of the year returns.

This clearly shows that the GST portal maintained by GSTN has fully stabilized and is glitch-free.

September also saw another milestone getting crossed when more than 1.1 crore e-way bills and e-invoices, combined (72.94 lakh e-invoices and 37.74 lakh e-way bills), were generated without any glitch on the portal run by NIC on September 30.

The gross GST revenue of Rs 1,47,686 crore in September included CGST of Rs 25,271 crore, SGST of Rs 31,813 crore, IGST of Rs 80,464 crore (including Rs 41,215 crore collected on import of goods), and cess of Rs 10,137 crore (including Rs 856 crore collected on import of goods).

WhatsApp bans 23 lakh bad accounts in India as new PDP bill takes shape

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp on Saturday said it banned over 23 lakh accounts in India in the month of August in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021.

The messaging platform, which has nearly 500 million users (according to third-party data) in the country, received 598 complaint reports in the month of August in India, and the records “actioned” were 27.

“Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform. In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, WhatsApp banned over 2.3 million (2,328,000) accounts in the month of August,” said a company spokesperson.

The platform banned nearly a similar number of bad accounts in India in July.

Under the upgraded IT Rules 2021, major digital and social media platforms, with in excess of five million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.

Meanwhile, during a hearing challenging the instant messaging app WhatsApp’s privacy policy, the Centre told the Supreme Court this week that the contentious Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill 2019 has been withdrawn and a comprehensive data protection Bill is being prepared.

In August, the Centre withdrew the Bill that has seen 81 amendments in the past three years, aiming to introduce a new, sharper Bill that fits into the comprehensive legal framework and protects the data of billions of citizens.

The new draft of the data protection Bill is being prepared to augment efficient usage of data since it would largely be used by the industry.

PM launches 5G services, calls it ‘historic day’ for 21st century India

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched 5G services in the country, saying it was a “historic day for 21st century India” and added that the technology will revolutionize the country’s telecom sector.

Launching the service at the four-day India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022 at Pragati Maidan in the national capital, Modi spoke about the benefits of 5G in India and how the service will help the country’s technological revolution.

He also spoke about key pillars that will support the Digital India movement, including the need for affordable technology and a widespread network.

The Prime Minister stressed on manufacturing of smart phones in India and said how it will ensure a reduction in device costs.

“Till 2014 we used to import 100 percent of our mobile phones. That’s why we decided to become ‘atmanirbhar’ in this particular area. In India, we now have 200 mobile phone manufacturing units now,” he said.

Modi also mentioned that India had 25 crore internet connections back in 2014, a number which has now increased to 85 crores.

More internet users are coming on board from rural areas, he said, adding that 5G will play a key role in how users new and old will benefit from the internet and its possibilities.

“Many people used to make fun of my atmanirbhar Bharat, but we increased mobile phone manufacturing units in India. Eight years ago, there were only two mobile manufacturing units in India. Today, there are over 200 units. We are at number 2 in the world and are exporting our mobile phones to the world,” the Prime Minister noted.

Modi said that at the time of 2G, 3G, and 4G, India was dependent on other nations for technology, but with 5G, the country has created a new history.

“With 5G, India is setting a global standard in telecom technology for the first time.”

The Prime Minister went on to say that with the increase in digital connectivity, the country has witnessed a multiplier effect.

“We have taken digitally from the elite to the grassroots in India, and this has led to innovation in the country.”

Earlier, the Prime Minister virtually interacted with metro workers, who were present inside a tunnel, via 5G technology.

5G will be launched in select cities on Saturday and it will progressively cover the entire country over the next couple of years.

The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to reach $450 billion by 2035.

Smartphone firms hail 5G launch, prepare bundled offers with telcos

0

Leading smartphone players on Saturday said that the 5G launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits for millions, especially in remote areas.

India is home to more than 500 million smartphone users and more than 100 million users with 5G-ready smartphones wish to upgrade to a 5G subscription in 2023, according to the latest Ericsson report.

Madhav Sheth, CEO of realme India, VP, realme, and President, realme International Business Group, told IANS that as the first brand to launch a 5G-enabled phone, “we believe that 5G has the potential to bring together the entire ecosystem”.

“This is why realme has dedicated 90 percent of its research and development efforts to 5G technologies and devices. We have partnered with the leading telcos in India and have curated a host of bundle offers for our users,” Sheth informed.

“We are also rolling out OTA updates for our devices to ensure that all our users can make the most of 5G,” he added.

The Indian smartphone users are even willing to pay a 45 percent premium for a plan bundled with novel experiences, the findings showed, which could be a delight for internet service providers ready with 5G, according to the Ericsson study.

Tasleem Arif, VP and R&D Head, OPPO India, said that after years of intense preparation, the launch of 5G will “serve as a transformational force for Indian society”.

“Supreme data download rates, three times greater spectrum efficiency, and super low latency will empower India to experience use cases like seamless video calls, instant downloads and uploads, and seamless gaming on the cloud,” he mentioned.

As an innovator, this also brings a great opportunity, as “this will open gates for innovating for next-gen experience from India”, Arif noted.

According to a report by Opensignal, 5G-enabled smartphone users in 30 Indian cities in India are getting 39.2 percent to 59.3 percent faster download speeds than those on non-5G phones.

Muralikrishnan B, President, Xiaomi India, said the market is constantly evolving and becoming digitally savvy by the day, and “5G has the power to transform, upgrade and uplift our nation”.

“We have been working closely with various telecom operators for over two years and have extensively tested most of our models for usability. Having a strong understanding of SA and NSA network bands, we have rolled out devices that support some of the most anticipated bands,” informed Muralikrishnan.

Online gaming, AR, and VR experiences along with content creation will take center-stage with the launch of 5G services.

“In India, we have launched over 20 5G enabled models to date and currently have 7.5 million Xiaomi 5G users,” he said.

Google disables online translation service in mainland China

0

Google has disabled its online translation service in mainland China owing to “low usage”, and redirected people to the Hong Kong domain which isn’t accessible for users from within the country.

Several users reported on Reddit and other social media platforms that the Google China Translate service became inaccessible, hampering their work.

“Today, at least 10 hours ago, translate.google.cn became inaccessible, I found this based on an automated test accessing it failing. It redirects to a normal Google search. translate.google.hk still accessible,” one user posted on Reddit late on Friday.

A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company has discontinued Google Translate in mainland China “due to low usage”.

Another affected user posted: “Yes. Google is shutting down translate CN. It will redirect to the HK site permanently.”

Earlier, Google had terminated its controversial China search engine project, named Dragonfly.

The controversial Chinese search engine raised privacy, censorship, and human rights concerns.

Google’s offices in the US, UK, Canada, India, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark witnessed protests by human rights groups over its plan to re-enter China through “Project Dragonfly”.

The search engine giant had launched a search engine in China in 2006 but pulled the service out of the country in 2010, citing Chinese government efforts to limit free speech and block websites.

It has been a dream come true for Shruti, who has always mentioned in her interviews how big a fan she is of the Sandman series and that she is a huge admirer of Neil Giaman.

Vietnam Open 2022: India’s N. Sikki-Rohan reach mixed doubles semis

0

Indian shuttlers N. Sikki Reddy and Rohan Kapoor advanced to the Vietnam Open 2022 mixed doubles semi-finals after beating Malaysia’s Cheah Yee See and Chan Peng Soon, here on Friday.

The Indian pair, which came into the BWF Super 100 badminton event winning the India Chhattisgarh International Challenge 2022 last week, took 39 minutes to defeat their higher-ranked opponents 21-19, 21-17 in the quarterfinals.

Until the first break, there was little that separated the two teams. From the scores 11-11, the Malaysians stepped up to build a three-point at 17-14. Thereafter, N. Sikki and Rohan won seven of the following nine points to make it 1-0.

The second game continued to be a close contest with the Indian pair trailing 11-10 at the break. However, like the first game, a series of consecutive points from Sikki and Rohan ultimately helped them seal the contest.

The Indian duo of Reddy and Kapoor will take on the world No. 35 pair of Lisa Ayu Kusumawati and Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto of Indonesia in the semifinals on Saturday. They are India’s only remaining challenge at the Vietnam Open.

World championships bronze medallist B. Sai Praneeth, junior world No. 2 Anupama Upadhyaya, and Thomas Cup-winner Priyanshu Rajawat crashed out early in the tournament.

Adopted four-fold strategy to make roads safer: Odisha CM

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday said that road safety is a high priority area for his government and the state has adopted a four-fold strategy to make the roads safer — by enforcement, education improvement in road engineering, and emergency care.

He said this at the SAFE convention organized by ‘The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) here. The Chief Minister has inaugurated an exhibition of new safe technologies for automobiles.

Highlighting the state’s performance in road safety initiatives, he said that Odisha has scored 66 percent and is categorized as a ‘high performer’ in implementing road safety measures during an audit conducted by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.

“The Supreme Court Committee has also rated some of our initiatives as best practices and suggested recommendations to neighboring states. Our government has started a Reward scheme for the people who help road accident victims. I am happy to share that more and more people are coming forward to help the road accident victims,” Patnaik said.

He thanked the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers for organizing this event in collaboration with the state transport department. The convention will be a great occasion to address issues of road safety, environmental concerns, and sharing solutions, he added.

Focussing on safety technologies, he said, with changing trends in the mobility sector, new technologies are being introduced for better and safer driving experiences. “It would be indeed a great experience here to know about new technologies behind safer and high-performing vehicles.”

Stating that road accidents are a serious cause of concern for all, Patnaik said many people lose their lives in road accidents across the country, including Odisha, every year. “This has a serious impact on families and the state’s economy,” he pointed out.

He expressed hope that the automobile manufacturers would continue to partner in state initiatives to make the roads safer and better.

Speaking on the occasion, transport minister Tukuni Sahu said that 7 lakh new vehicles are being registered in the state every year. “They are contributing immensely to the state’s economy. But, for increasing accidents, the growth is undermined,” she said.

She expressed hope that automobile manufacturers will bring in new and safe technology to help make the roads safer for people.

Alia Bhatt to launch her own line of Maternity wear

Actress Alia Bhatt, who is on her family’s way, has announced that she will be launching her own line of maternity wear.

Taking to Instagram, the Bollywood actress said: “Two years ago, I started a children’s clothing brand. Everyone asked why I’m doing a kids brand when I don’t have kids.”

“Now, I’m launching my own line of maternity wear. I don’t think anyone will ask why. But let me tell you anyway.”

“It’s not like I’ve bought maternity clothes before. But when I got down to it, I was overwhelmed.”

“You don’t know how you’re going to look or feel over the next few months and let’s be honest, not being able to find the right thing to wear can be stressful.”

“Do I buy brands I already wear but in a bigger size? Should I raid Ranbir’s wardrobe? And just because my body is changing doesn’t mean my sense of style has to, right?”

“So I started making my personal style more bump-friendly. I added elastic to my favorite jeans, designed shirts that I didn’t have to share with my husband, and wore flowy dresses so as to not invite any unwanted belly-touching. Comfort took priority over any ‘airport looks.

“What started off as me trying to fill a gap in my existing wardrobe, led to an entire maternity collection. And I can’t wait to give you a sneak peek tomorrow!”

22 lakh Indian IT professionals likely to leave jobs by 2025: Report

0

The attrition rate in the IT-BPM sector in India is reaching gigantic proportions and up to 22 lakh IT professionals are likely to quit their jobs by 2025, a report has said.

The findings showed that 57 percent of IT professionals would not consider returning to the IT services sector in the future.

The ‘Talent Exodus Report’ report by TeamLease Digital predicts up to 55 percent growth in contract staffing attrition for FY 2023 as compared to 49 percent in FY 2022

The report said there is a huge misconception with the sentiment in the candidate market, that a salary increase would improve performance and boost job satisfaction, and 20 lakh-22 lakh employees are expected to leave their jobs by 2025.

“The Indian IT sector has witnessed tremendous growth in the last decade. It has recorded 15.5 percent growth, which is the fastest in more than a decade, and touched $227 billion, creating additional 5.5 lakh jobs in FY22 alone,” said Sunil Chemmankotil, Chief Executive Officer, TeamLease Digital.

However, with the global pandemic disrupting the IT hiring chain, “there is evidence of a reverse trend which indicates that retaining a business-critical talent has undergone a great change in the last two years”, he added.

With the usual demand for salary hikes and other benefits, the main attraction for employees in their new jobs is ‘Great Reflection’ on the internal policies and external factors that “should be relooked at by employers as we are viewing great changes in the employees’ feelings about work and life”, Chemmankotil added.

While employees’ needs and priorities have changed, such as the desire for flexibility, career growth, and employee value proposition, they are re-evaluating their careers based on these aspects and quitting their well-cushioned jobs in the mid-way.

The alarming figures reveal that the flexible structure has heightened the choice.

“Organisations’ strategic hiring plans must contain goals towards their employees and their betterment. This ultimately translates into soul searching over whether an employee feels valued in his/her work or merely creates outcomes and value to benefit others,” said the report.

New-age firms ramping up their workforce was the chief cause of attrition in the IT services sector in 2021.

Nearly 50 percent of respondents believe that ‘lack of better compensation and benefits is the greatest reason for talent exodus, whereas 25 percent believe lack of career growth to be the reason

“IT companies are experiencing dysfunctional turnover where the best employees of companies are voluntarily leaving at higher rates,” the report mentioned.
