Rupee slides to all-time low of 81.93 against US dollar

0

The Indian rupee has depreciated to trade at an all-time low of 81.93 against the US dollar after the surge in the dollar index, dealers said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 81.90 against the dollar, then fell to 81.93, against the 81.58 close in the previous trading session.

“The dollar index at a 20-year high had led to sharp depreciation in the Indian rupee over the last week. Despite that, INR has outperformed other global currencies, as RBI has been actively supporting the domestic currency by selling the US dollars,” said Aishvarya Dadheech, Fund Manager, Ambit Asset Management.

Cheech also said that in the short term, due to global risk-off sentiment, we can expect more pressure on the Indian rupee. It will be difficult for the RBI to continue selling the US dollars aggressively any further, as the remaining forex reserves are around 9-10 months of import cover only. Most likely, RBI will have to increase repo rates (post the recent FED outcomes) to defend against further pressure on INR. Nevertheless, in the medium term, the outperformance of the Indian rupee will be supported by lower external debt (below 20 percent as of March 2022), robust inflows (FDI+FII), a resilient economy, and adequate forex reserve ($540 billion).

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, advanced 0.16 percent to 114.235.

The Brent crude oil prices were trading at $85.26 per barrel.

Going forward, the investors are eying RBI monetary policy scheduled on Friday and the dollar index for the short-term directional trend.

Meanwhile, benchmark indices are trading marginally lower during the afternoon trade, with Sensex falling 112.02 points and Nifty by 38.30 points.

At 2.00 p.m., Sensex was trading at 56,987.85, which was down 119.67 points or 0.21 percent, whereas Nifty was down 64.35 points or 0.38 percent at 16,943.05.

CPL 2022: Jamaica Tallawahs get past St Lucia to get a shot at berth in final

0

The Jamaica Tallawahs gave themselves a chance to get into the final as they beat the Saint Lucia Kings in the Eliminator. They won by 33 runs and will now go to Qualifier 2 of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

In Qualifier 2, Jamaica will meet Guyana Amazon Warriors, who lost to Barbados in the other match of the day.

The Saint Lucia Kings won the toss and opted to field first and took full advantage of that decision with a disciplined bowling display. The Tallawahs were never comfortable. However, some late order hitting from Mohammed Nabi helped them post a defendable total.

The Kings restricted the Tallawahs to just 29 for 2 in the PowerPlay as Matthew Forde and Alzarri Joseph bowled exceptional lengths.

The Kings continued to take wickets at regular intervals and when Kesrick Williams removed Chris Green for two the Tallawahs found themselves 115 for 8. However, Nabi lead the counterattack following that dismissal and finished with 31 off 15 balls to ensure the Tallawahs had a fighting total of 148.

However, their 148 proved more than enough as the Tallawahs produced a fantastic display in the field.

While chasing the Kings got off to a good start reaching 54/2 at the end of the PowerPlay but when Du Plessis was dismissed for 41 in the eighth over. The Kings found themselves in a hole from which they couldn’t recover.

Mohammed Nabi followed up his fireworks with the bat with some exceptional bowling. The Tallawahs bowling unit all played their part as the Kings folded for 115 and exited the competition.

The Tallawahs’ victory now means that they will battle the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the second qualifier to determine who will contest the Hero CPL final against the Barbados Royals.

Brief scores: Jamaica Tallawahs 148/8 in 20 overs (Shamarh Brooks 47, Mohammad Nabi 31 not out, Raymon Reiffer 25, David Wiese 3/19, Alzarri Joseph 2/31) beat St Lucia Kings 115 all out in 18 overs (Faf du Plessis 41, Alzarri Joseph 28, Mohammed Nabi 3/10, Fabian Allen 3/28) by 33 runs.

Root says he is thoroughly enjoying cricket after relinquishing captaincy

0

Former England captain Joe Root has said he is “thoroughly enjoying” England Test cricket’s resurgence following two years of dismal performance, adding he hoped the side could go from “strength to strength” from here on.

Under Root, the England Test suffered several series losses with the worst being the 4-0 hammering in the Ashes Down Under and the 1-0 series loss against the West Indies. Following criticism of his captaincy, Root stepped down to focus on his batting and since then the England side under new skipper Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum has won six of the seven Tests they have played — a first after 2004.

England’s victories with Stokes at the helm have come against New Zealand, India, and South Africa with Root and Jonny Bairstow being the architects of most wins with their fine batting. The side will tour Pakistan in December this year for a historic three-Test series.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this year as much as probably any I have in international cricket since I’ve been playing, in terms of Test cricket in particular,” Root told Sky Sports.

“Hopefully we can go from strength to strength from here and keep moving forward as a team, but we’ve done some things this year that not many Test teams have been able to achieve. I think the challenge for us now is to keep going for it, keep trying to explore new areas in the format, and see how far we can take it.”

Root said he had developed a “very unhealthy relationship” with his role as skipper and resigned in April to focus on his batting. He also said captaincy had started taking a “bad toll on my own personal health”.

“It’s been great fun (the Test wins under Stokes). Yeah, definitely. It was a tough last couple of years, but I think we’ve got to look forward as a team — I certainly have.

“I’m really excited to just get my teeth into trying to score as many as I can for Ben (Stokes) and for the team and see where we can get to as a side. As an experienced player in the team, I’ve still got a role in trying to lead in a different capacity, and help with some of the younger batters and younger guys, and hopefully, that will benefit us as well.

“I’m really excited (for the Test series against Pakistan). I’ve never been before. When you look at some of the games that have been there in the last couple of years, the teams touring there, it has looked great so really looking forward to getting out there,” he added.

We need to relook Indian mythology, folklore, says Hrithik

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan, who is currently awaiting the release of his upcoming film ‘Vikram Vedha’, feels that India as a country is culturally very rich and has a treasure of folk tales and mythology that can act as fodder to tell stories on the celluloid.

The basic idea of ‘Vikram Vedha’ is based on the Indian mythological story of Vikram and Betaal.

Elaborating on the same, Hrithik said in an answer to the media, “To take something like this that we have all heard in our childhood and create this entire story of ‘Vikram Vedha’ and to use it as a device, it’s so sharp.”

He further mentioned, “We have so many of such stories in our mythology and folklore. I think we need to re-look at this treasure, there’s so much fodder in there from a storytelling point of view.”

Director Pushkar of the film’s director duo, Pushkar-Gayatri, added, “What intrigues us as directors is that our mythology or folklore majorly have no demarcation about who is wrong or right. As creators, it’s refreshing to install the stories that are in the grey zone.”

‘Vikram Vedha’, which also stars Saif Ali Khan, is set to release in theatres on September 30.

Gopi sir and Mathias have told us we have to win the tournament to show our high level, says doubles star Dhruv Kapila

0

India’s rising men’s doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and M.R Arjun, who won the India International challenge last week, were motivated by their mentors Pullela Gopichand and Danish coach Mathias Boe to go for the title.

The pair had strong backing from their mentors who motivated them to push the limit and gave them the boost to achieve this feat. “We had planned from the beginning of the tournament. Gopi sir and Mathias had told us that we have to win the tournament to show that we are on a higher level. And we did prove that. The final was a difficult match against Thailand’s pair,” IOS Sports athlete, Dhruv said.

“They played some great matches earlier this year and were consistent even during the tournament. But we took that challenge and we prepared well. We knew they would hesitate in the crucial moment and we took advantage of that,” he added.

Describing their performance in the tournament, Dhruv said, “With the Malaysian pair the match was difficult as we knew that they were really strong and had played some good badminton, but we were ready for it. We won 21-15 and 23-21 against them and with the Thailand pair it was a comfortable game win with a score of 21-14 21-12.”

He was also a part of the Indian squad that scripted history by winning the first-ever Thomas Cup for India.

Dhruv now remains motivated to carry on this momentum as the pair heads to Europe to compete in the French Open and the German Open in the coming days.

WhatsApp discloses critical bug in older versions, now patched

Meta-owned WhatsApp has revealed a critical bug that could affect older installations on various devices that have not been updated with the latest software versions.

The vulnerability could allow an attacker to exploit a code error known as an integer overflow.

“An integer overflow in WhatsApp for Android prior to v2.22.16.12, Business for Android prior to v2.22.16.12, iOS prior to v2.22.16.12, Business for iOS prior to v2.22.16.12 could result in remote code execution in an established video call,” WhatsApp said in an update.

In remote code execution, a hacker can remotely execute commands on someone else’s computing device.

Don’t equate fun with money: Sundar Pichai to employees

0

Alphabet and Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, has advised employees not to mix fun with earning more money, as little things in life can bring more joy than what money can buy.

In a recent interaction with employees, Pichai was bombarded with questions from employees related to travel and entertainment budget cuts, productivity, hybrid work, and potential layoffs.

“I remember when Google was small and scrappy. We shouldn’t always equate fun with money. I think you can walk into a hard-working startup and people may be having fun and it shouldn’t always equate to money,” he apparently told employees.

Pichai responded to a question about why the company has shifted from “rapidly hiring and spending to equally aggressive cost saving.”

“I’m a bit concerned that you think what we’ve done is what you would define as aggressive cost saving. I think it’s important we don’t get disconnected. You need to take a long-term view through conditions like this,” Pichai elaborated.

Pichai aims to make the company 20 percent more efficient, hinting at job cuts.

Reports have surfaced that Alphabet is giving some workers 60 days to apply for a new role at the company if their jobs are set to be cut.

Last month, Google fired more than 50 workers at its incubator Area 120 and gave them extra 30 days to find another job at the company.

A Google spokesman was quoted as saying that nearly 95 percent of employees found new roles within the notice period.

Pichai said the company is “still investing in long-term projects like quantum computing. But it’s important “to be smart, to be frugal, to be scrappy, to be more efficient.”

“We’re committed to taking care of our employees. I think we’re just working through a tough moment macroeconomically and I think it’s important we as a company align and work together,” said Pichai.

Earlier, addressing the gathering at the Code Conference in the US, Pichai said that the more the company tries to understand the macroeconomic conditions, it feels very uncertain about it.

“The macroeconomic performance is correlated to ad spend, consumer spends,s and so on,” he told the audience.

Google has suspended hiring new employees and reportedly told some existing employees to “shape up or ship out” if expectations are not met.
