President Murmu lauds HAL-ISRO partnership

Inaugurating HAL’s Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) on Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu said it is not only a historic moment for HAL and ISRO but for the whole of India.

“India is the sixth country in the world to have cryogenic engine manufacturing capabilities. The glorious past of HAL and ISRO gives us an assurance that they will play a crucial role in the future,” she said.

ICMF will cater to the entire rocket manufacturing and assembly under one roof for ISRO. The facility will boost self-reliance in the manufacturing of high-thrust rocket engines.

The facility is set up in an area of 4,500 sq mt housing over 70 hi-tech equipment and testing facilities for manufacturing cryogenic (CE20) and semi-cryogenic engines (SE2000) of Indian space launch vehicles.

In 2013, an MOU was signed with ISRO for establishing the facility for manufacturing cryogenic engine modules at HAL. The MOU for the cryogenic engine facility was subsequently amended in 2016 with an investment of Rs 208 crore towards the setting up of the Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF).

S. Somanath, Secretary, Department of Space, said India can emerge as a superpower in rocket technology only with the help of HAL, which has shown the ability to absorb complicated space technology with perfection.

Cryogenic engines are the most widely used engines the world over in space launch vehicles. Due to the complex nature of the cryogenic engine, to date, only a few countries — the US, France, Japan, China, and Russia — have mastered the cryogenic technology.

On January 5, 2014, India successfully flew GSLV-D5 with a cryogenic engine (made by ISRO through private industries) and became the sixth country in developing cryogenic engines. Space exploration in the future is mostly dependent upon cryogenic technology.

Chiyaan Vikram, who was in the national capital to promote his film ‘Ponniyan Selvan I’, talked about sharing screen space with Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan again after ‘Raavanan’ and said that the actress is picture perfect.

Vikram said: “There have been many beauty queens but I must say Aish has something that has stolen everyone’s heart. So, she needs to be perfect all the time and I have seen how she does it in her own style.”

“All our fans keep saying you both look so nice together but the thing is I don’t get her in movies so easily.”

Vikram also praised her dancing skills and added: “She dances so beautifully that during a shot, I just forgot myself and was lost watching her dance moves. It is music in motion. She is just perfect.”

8 US states sue crypto platform Nexo for lying to investors

0

Cryptocurrency platform Nexo has been sued by New York, California, and six other state regulators for failing to register with the state as securities and commodities brokers or dealers and lying to investors about their registration status.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that despite warnings from the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to register as a securities and commodities broker or dealer, Nexo failed to register and misrepresented to investors that they are a licensed and registered platform.

“Cryptocurrency platforms are not exceptional; they must register to operate just like other investment platforms,” said James.

“Nexo violated the law and investors’ trust by falsely claiming that it is a licensed and registered platform. Nexo must stop its unlawful operations and take necessary action to protect its investors,” she added.

Launched in 2018, Nexo has supported over 50 cryptocurrencies, had over 5 million users, and processed over $80 billion.

Through her lawsuit, she is seeking disgorgement of any revenues derived from Nexo’s unlawful conduct and restitution for investors.

The lawsuit, filed in New York County State Supreme Court, said that Nexo promoted and sold securities in the form of an interest-bearing virtual currency account called the Earn Interest Product with promises of high returns for participating investors while failing to register as a securities broker or dealer as required by state law.

In addition, the lawsuit alleged that Nexo engaged in the unregistered purchase and sale of securities and commodities through its virtual currency trading platform called “the Nexo Exchange”, and misled investors by falsely representing that it was in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Roughly 10,000 New Yorkers have accounts with Nexo.

Restore pre-Covid global air freighter services at Hyderabad: FTCCI to ministry

0

The civil aviation ministry got a request from The Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry to restore the Cathay Pacific & Lufthansa Freighter services facility at Hyderabad which was removed post-Covid, To assist the exporters and importers of Telangana.

The absence of direct international freight services in the Telangana capital is being sorely felt by the city’s pharma sector which accounts for 40 percent of the total Indian bulk drug production and 50 percent of the bulk drug exports. Hyderabad region also accounts for over 30% of all the vaccines produced globally.

Prior to the pandemic, Hyderabad Airport enjoyed good freighter connectivity to major global hubs with operations by Lufthansa Cargo (to Frankfurt) and Cathay Pacific Cargo (Hong Kong). These freighter services allowed local industries to seamlessly integrate with the global supply chains at competitive rates and rapid connections.

However, following the pandemic restrictions, operations of freighter airlines were removed from the ambit of the Open Skies policy in vogue, and cargo operations were instead brought under Bilateral Air Services Agreements (BASAs) which were designed & intended to manage the operations of passenger services on international routes, the FTCCI has stated in its letter.

An unintended consequence of the above change was the curtailment of two-port landings by foreign carriers flying a multi-stop circuit route within India, dropping off/picking up international cargo from multiple Indian cities before heading back to their overseas base. With the change in the rule, such flights were restricted from connecting to more than one Indian city in the same journey. With the cabotage restrictions already in place, such flights were only carrying international cargo and no transportation of cargo between 2 Indian cities was permitted on such flights.

“Crucially for smaller metros such as Hyderabad, such two-port flights reduced the cost of global connectivity by ‘sharing’ a single flight across multiple cities (double-dipping) enabling smaller Indian cities to access global markets in a fast and economical way. Under these new rules, the Cathay Pacific flight previously operating Hong Kong-Delhi-Hyderabad-Hong Kong or the Lufthansa flight operating Frankfurt-Mumbai-Hyderabad-Frankfurt on a single journey is no longer be permitted. As highlighted previously, these were crucial trade links for local industries in Telangana, and these two carriers combined had carried a total of around 15,000 MT of cargo in FY2019-20, accounting for around 17% of the total international air cargo volumes handled at Hyderabad Airport during the period,” said Anil Agarwal, president FTCCI.

The FTCCI has requested the ministry to restore the earlier framework of Open Skies, in particular freeing cargo flights from the restrictive passenger BASAs and permitting double-dipping freighters, and also permit the restoration of double-dip operations of Lufthansa and Cathay covering HYD as one of the ports.

After winning the T20I series against Australia in Hyderabad, Team India arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday to kick off their limited-overs tour vs South Africa.

The Indian Cricket team got a rousing welcome from the hundreds of fans who were waiting outside of Thiruvananthapuram airport.

The India team will play 3 T20Is which will be their last assignment before the T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma has a full-strength squad at his disposal with only Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar rested.

The first match against South Africa will take place at the Greenfield Stadium on October 28. The Men in Blue are likely to have an off day on Monday, before hitting the nets a day before the clash. Fans flocked the streets as Rohit Sharma and Co made it from the airport to the stadium. Many chanted Sanju Samson’s name, the local hero after he was omitted from the T20 World Cup squad.

The Kerala cricket association is hopeful that it’s going to be a capacity crowd match as by now 75 percent of the tickets have been sold out, despite the lowest-priced ticket costing Rs 1,500.

Don’t miss Jupiter’s closest date with Earth in 59 years

0
Jupiter was set to make its closest approach to Earth in 59 years on Monday and stargazers were waiting for an excellent view when the giant gas planet reaches “opposition”. The next time Jupiter will come this close will be in 2129.

From the viewpoint of Earth’s surface, opposition happens when an astronomical object rises in the east as the Sun sets in the west, placing the object and the Sun on opposite sides of Earth.

“Stargazers: Jupiter will make its closest approach to Earth in 59 years! Weather permitting, expect excellent views on September 26. A good pair of binoculars should be enough to catch some details; you’ll need a large telescope to see the Great Red Spot,” NASA tweeted.

Jupiter’s opposition occurs every 13 months, making the planet appear larger and brighter than any other time of the year.

“Jupiter’s closest approach to Earth rarely coincides with opposition, which means this year’s views will be extraordinary,” NASA had said in a statement.

At its closest approach, Jupiter will be approximately 365 million miles in distance from Earth.

The planet is approximately 600 million miles away from Earth at its farthest point.

“With good binoculars, the banding (at least the central band) and three or four of the Galilean satellites (moons) should be visible,” said Adam Kobelski, a research astrophysicist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

“It’s important to remember that Galileo observed these moons with 17th-century optics. One of the key needs will be a stable mount for whatever system you use,” he noted.

Kobelski recommends a larger telescope to see Jupiter’s Great Red Spot and bands in more detail — a four-inch-or-larger telescope and some filters in the green to the blue range would enhance the visibility of these features.

According to Kobelski, an ideal viewing location will be at a high elevation in a dark and dry area.

Jupiter has 53 named moons, but scientists believe that 79 have been detected in total.

The four largest moons — Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto — are called the Galilean satellites.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft, which has been orbiting Jupiter for six years, is dedicated to exploring the planet’s surface and its moons.

Scientists believe studying Jupiter can lead to breakthrough discoveries about the formation of the solar system.

Anushka Kaushik to play parallel lead in Raveena Tandon-starrer ‘Patna Shukla’

Actress Anushka Kaushik, who acted in the webseries such as ‘Ghar Waapsi’ and Crash Course’, has been selected for the role in the movie ‘Patna Shukla’.

Actress said, “Speaking in the Bhojpuri language is very challenging to me and I put a lot of concentration to learn the language. I am not sure whether I will be able to do that or not when they called me. But they are very interested in me doing the role. I thought this is the suitable and perfect role for me”

“They saw many characteristics of me and then they got confident about me to play that role in the movie, I asked them to prepare Bhojpuri for the day, and I gave the audition,” She said.

Recollecting the audition of the day actress said that she had seen many people and different faces and known faces, I thought that this was a big project. I had gone into the audition hall and wished politely as my character was this way. There had Arabaaz sir and director around 5-6 people.

“Midway during my first take, I asked to start again, and then it took just one take for me to do the entire scene. At the end of it, everyone started clapping but I still asked them for one more take. They told me that they had gotten what they wanted but I could do one more take if I wanted to. Then in a day or two, I got the call that I was doing the film.”

Anushka briefed about her character: “It is a parallel lead alongside Raveena Tandon ma’am and the whole set up of the character and the story is very different. I have never been a part of any story set in Patna or even visited the city, but I know to prepare for this role, I would love to go there. The journey of this character is very different, yet it still has some relatability with the real Anushka.”

Starring Raveena Tandon, Anushka Kaushik, Satish Kaushik, Chandan Roy Sanyal, and Jatin Goswami amongst others, ‘Patna Shukla’is all set to release next year.

I disconnect from people who try to break my self-esteem, says Sadaa

Actress Sadaa, who has turned into a wildlife photographer in recent times, has said that she cannot compromise her dignity and self-esteem in life no matter what and that she cuts herself off from people who try to break her self-esteem.

Taking to Instagram, the actress posted a clip from her recent interview with a media outlet, and wrote, “Straight from the heart answer to a question least expected for an interview meant for the promotions of a web series.

“Caring for self is not being selfish as most people would like you to believe. The ones who expect you to put them over your self-respect or happiness, are the ones who are actually selfish! Best to stay away from them for your own peace”

In the video clip, the actress is asked the question, ‘When do people try to break your self-esteem?’

Sadaa replies, “I cut off. For me, my self-esteem, my dignity, and my pride come here (pointing to the top) and I cannot compromise on that aspect of my life no matter what. If anyone even tries to tamper a little bit with it, I am like completely disconnected. This is a closed thing/chapter.”

Had warned Charlie Dean for leaving the crease early repeatedly, told umpires too: Deepti Sharma

Since Saturday, when off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma ran out England’s Charlie Dean in the 44th over at the non-striker’s end to get a 16-run victory for India over England at Lord’s to complete a 3-0 sweep, the cricketing world has been divided over whether the Indian team should have warned her before effecting the run-out.

Now, Deepti, who stopped in her delivery stride to run-out Charlie from the non-striker’s end, has revealed that prior warnings were given to the batter before she was finally run out for backing up too far from the crease.

“It was a plan because we had warned her (for leaving the crease early) repeatedly. Whatever we did things was as per the rules and guidelines. We had told the umpires as well. But still, she (Charlie Dean) was there (outside the crease). We couldn’t do much,” said Deepti to reporters after arriving at Kolkata airport.

With a majority of England cricketers, both men’s and women’s, disagreeing over the mode of dismissal apart from the spirit of cricket debate, Deepti has found people speaking in her favor, with Ravichandran Ashwin, Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer and Alex Hales backing her for following the rules.

Only last week, in the changes made by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the method of effecting a run out from the non-striker’s end was moved from Law 41 of ‘Unfair Play’ to Law 38 of ‘Run out’ section, making it no longer an unfair mode of dismissal.

Earlier, former India captain Anjum Chopra told IANS on the sidelines of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) match between India Capitals and Gujarat Giants in New Delhi on Sunday, that Deepti had all the “rights” to run out Charlie from the non-striker’s end, saying, “if it was wrong, TV Umpire would have given not out”.

“ICC has made these laws and it has been derived from the UK itself. Deepti had all the rights to run out a batter because the batter had left the crease prior to the delivery being bowled.”

“On-field umpire too had referred the decision to the third umpire and that decision came from there, so I don’t think there is any confusion or any disparity as to if any side was favored or not favored. I don’t know why there is confusion, if it was not in the laws of the game, both on-field and TV umpires would have said the batter was not out.”

Talking about the 3-0 ODI series triumph and giving a fitting farewell to Jhulan, Deepti said, “Every team wants to win. We wanted to give her a good farewell by winning the game (at Lord’s). As a team, whatever effort we could put in, we gave.”

“This is historic. For the first time, we beat England in England. We won the series 3-0 and Jhulan di had a great role to play in it. It was her final match. We will miss her on the field. We will follow her dedication on the field.”

George Clooney: There is no downside to my wife

Actor George Clooney says there is no “downside” when it comes to being married to Amal, as he reflects on eight years of marriage with the human rights lawyer.

The 61-year-old actor tied the knot with Amal Alamuddin, 44, back in 2014 and went on to have twins Alexander and Ella, four, with her and insisted and paid tribute to his “magical” wife just days before they celebrated their eighth anniversary on Tuesday, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

He said: “Eight years! And they said it wouldn’t last. Everything about my wife is sort of magical, as I think everybody has come to realize as they see her and hear her and hear what she stands for. There’s just no downside to her!”

Meanwhile, the ‘Gravity’ star was asked about the “moral code” he and his wife hope to instil in their children, and explained that he wants his little ones to learn to “pay attention” to others and to “challenge with power.”

He told ETOnline: “The same thing I think everybody wants to instil in their kids, really. Which is to pay attention to other people. In my family, the rules were always ‘Challenge people with power, defend people with less power.’ And if you can do that, you’ve had a good life.”

George is currently starring opposite ‘Pretty Woman actress Julia Roberts in the romcom Ticket to Paradise and noted that she is a “really good friend” to both him and the whole family, joking that he cannot “get rid” of her.

He said: “Julia’s a really good friend. She and her whole family are friends. I love their whole family. She lived down below us and she would come up and literally take the kids out for ice cream with my wife. [Now] I can’t shake her!”

‘Coffee With Kadhal’ is a story around three brothers, says Sundar C

Ace director Sundar C, who is known for making rom-coms that work big time, said that his next upcoming romantic, feel-good, comedy entertainer, ‘Coffee with Kadhal’ is a story that revolves around three brothers.

Participating in the audio and trailer launch event of the film which was held at Leela Palace on Monday, Sundar C said: “Coffee with Kadhal is a romantic drama, a family entertainer, a hilarious comedy. It is everything rolled into one. In short, it is a feel-good entertainer.”

“The film is about three brothers played by Srikanth, Jiiva and Jai. All three brothers have characters that are in stark contrast with one another. While Srikanth is an introvert, Jai plays an extrovert in the film. Jiiva strikes a balance between being an introvert and an extrovert. The story is based on them — their romantic relationships, their family bond, the problems that erupt between them.”

“There are six female leads in the film. Samyuktha, Raiza Wilson, Divyadarshini, Malavika Sharma, Aishwarya Dutta, and Amrita Iyer. Each of these characters helps the story progress,” he said.

The director disclosed that the film had eight songs in all and that music director Yuvan Shankar Raja was a big strength of the film.

The film, which has been produced by Sundar’s wife Kushbhu’s Avni Cinemax, is to be presented by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies on October 7 this year.

From chana puri to dandiya masti, TV celebs reveal their Navratri celebration plans

Be it wearing traditional and colorful dresses, dancing with dandiya sticks, or enjoying special delicacies, Navratri is all here to celebrate with excitement, fun, and devotion. And everyone has their own way of celebrating, similarly, TV actors also talked about the way they would like to observe it in a distinct and memorable way.

‘Kumkum Bhagya’s Aparna Mishra loves gorging on some special food that are prepared during fasts which include sabudana vada(deep-fried fritter made with tapioca pearls and boiled potatoes), sabudana khichdi, and also prasad of chana puri.

She said: “I celebrate Navratri every year and it is one of my favorite festivals too. I have actually come to love fasting and relish the delicious sabudana vada, khichdi, and Chana puri which are prepared around this time of the year. In fact, I wait for Navratri so that I can have all these ‘Falhari’ dishes.”

But the actress is a little disappointed as she won’t be able to keep fast this year because of her shoots and busy work schedule.

“However, this year I won’t be able to fast during Navratri because of a hectic shoot schedule, but will be doing the aarti and attending Garba events in the city,” she added.

On the other hand, stand-up comedian Gaurav Dubey is fond of performing Garba with family and friends and this year too he is going to do the same.

“Navratri is one of my favorite festivals that I eagerly await. It brings my family together as we all meet, exchange sweets and gifts, and spend nights playing Garba. For me, Garba is the highlight of the festival.”

“The whole festival has a different vibe to it which makes it special for everyone. This year as well, I plan to celebrate it with my family and if time permits, then I will definitely play Garba with my loved ones,” revealed the 28-year-old comedian.

For actress Shubhaavi Choksey, any festival is all about togetherness and making some memories with families and friends.

She said: “Festivals are always a means to bring everyone together and have a good time celebrating with our dear and near ones. For me, Navratri has always been about celebrating the festival with family and friends with much enthusiasm and focusing on ‘shakti'(divine energy).

While elaborating more about the reason to celebrate Navratri, she explained: “The festival is celebrated for different reasons in different parts of India, but the main theme remains the same – the victory of good over evil. There is also that aspect of different colors being assigned to different days and I try to follow up with that trend and color coordinate.”

Actress Neha Joshi also explained the meaning of the first day of Navratri and its importance.

“On the first day of Navratri, Devi Shailputri, also known as Devi Parvati, is worshipped. Revered as the daughter of the Himalayas, She is believed to bring about the highest state of consciousness, enthusiasm, success, and happiness in an individual. She is the absolute form of mother nature.”

“People wear yellow-colored clothes to please the Goddess and in my hometown, we offer pure ghee to her. It is believed that by offering pure ghee, the devotees are blessed with a life free of diseases and illness,” she concluded.

Prez to inaugurate HAL’s cryogenic engine manufacturing facility in B’luru

0

President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate HAL’s state-of-the-art Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

The facility will cater to the entire Rocket Engine Manufacturing under one roof for ISRO. The facility will boost self-reliance in the manufacturing of High-thrust Rocket engines.

The facility has been set up over an area of 4,500 sq mts housing over 70 hi-tech equipment and testing facilities for manufacturing Cryogenic (CE20) and Semi-cryogenic (SE2000) Engines of Indian Space Launch Vehicles.

In 2013, an MOU was signed with ISRO for establishing the facility for manufacturing Cryogenic Engine modules at HAL, Aerospace Division. The MOU for the Cryogenic Engine facility was subsequently amended in 2016 for the setting up of the Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) with an investment of Rs 208 crore.

The commissioning of all the critical equipment for the manufacturing and assembly requirements has been completed. The pre-production activities, which involve the preparation of the process plans, drawings, quality plans, etc. have also commenced. HAL will start realizing the modules by March 2023.

HAL Aerospace Division manufactures liquid propellant tanks and launches vehicle structures of PSLV, GSLV MK-II, GSLV Mk-III, and also stage integration for GSLV Mk-II. The Aerospace Division entering into the manufacture of Cryogenic Engines is a major step in technology upgradation cum modernization, a HAL release stated.

Cryogenic Engines are the most widely used engines the world over in launch vehicles. Due to the complex nature of the cryogenic engine, to date, only a few countries the US, France, Japan, China, and Russia have mastered the cryogenic technology. On January 5, 2014, India successfully flew GSLV-D5 with a cryogenic engine (made by ISRO through private industries) and became the sixth country in developing cryogenic engines. Bowlers, Matthews, Taylor help West Indies win final ODI, deny New Zealand series sweep

0

A clinical bowling performance, combined with an all-round show by captain Hayley Matthews and senior player Stafanie Taylor striking a half-century helped West Indies win the final ODI by four wickets and deny New Zealand a clean sweep of the three-match series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Electing to bat first, New Zealand ended with a sub-par score of 168 all out in 48.1 overs, with Lauren Down making 53 as apart from Amelia Kerr’s 30, no other batter could make a substantial contribution.

The opening pair of Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates departed early while Amelia attempted to revive the innings with Maddy Green through a 37-run partnership before the latter fell for 14. Soon, Amelia made her way back to the pavilion as New Zealand was left in tatters at 84/4 in 22.2 overs.

Lauren tried to fight back and get New Zealand to a respectable total through her third ODI fifty. But once she fell to Hayley in a caught-and-bowled dismissal in the 42nd over, New Zealand’s innings folded up quickly from 155/7 to 168 all out.

With the ball, Hayley led the impressive effort with 2/23 in her 10 overs while Afy Fletcher (2/31) and Karishma Ramharack (2/28) supported their skipper very well. Chinelle Henry, Aaliyah Alleyne, and Shakera Selman had a scalp apiece.

In the chase, West Indies were reduced to 10/2 as pacer Jess Kerr took out Natasha McLean and Shabika Gajnabi on successive deliveries in the third over. But Hayley and Stafanie got together for a huge partnership of 81 runs before Brooke Halliday dismissed the former for 40.

When Stafanie had to retire hurt due to cramps at 51, West Indies had reached 116/3 in 31 overs. New Zealand tried to make a late comeback by dismissing Kyshona Knight and Chinelle Henry in quick succession. But Aaliyah hit 27 not out to ensure West Indies ended the ODI series on a high.

Brief Scores:

New Zealand 168 all out in 48.1 overs (Lauren Down 53, Amelia Kerr 30; Hayley Matthews 2/23, Karishma Ramharack 2/28) lost to West Indies 169/6 in 43.4 overs (Stafanie Taylor 51 retired hurt, Hayley Matthews 40; Jess Kerr 3/29, Brooke Halliday 1/16) by four wickets.

Outdoor mask mandates fully lifted in S.Korea

0

The South Korean government on Monday fully lifted outdoor mask mandates as new Covid-19 cases fell to the lowest number in more than two months.

South Korea began implementing the mask-wearing rules in October 2020 and strengthened them further last year, reports Yonhap News Agency.

But it partially eased outdoor mask mandates in May only to enforce mask wearing for those at outdoor gatherings of 50 or more people, and such large-scale events as sporting events and concerts.

People who violated the rules were subject to a fine.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has said the country is “overcoming a critical moment” of a Covid-19 resurgence, and it will ease low-risk anti-virus steps in phases in consultation with experts.

“Wearing masks is still needed on a voluntary basis in accordance with circumstances. Particularly, it is needed for high-risk groups and those who come in contact with high-risk groups,” a Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) official said.

But rules for indoor mask wearing will be in place for the time being on possible risks of seasonal influenza and other infectious diseases, according to officials.

“Lifting all indoor mask-wearing rules at one time would minimize confusion. It could be lifted after the seventh wave passes and the situation is stabilized,” said Jung Ki-suck, a civilian adviser to the government task force on the pandemic.

He voiced objection to easing the indoor mask mandates in phases, though some have called on the government to ease the rules for young people to ensure their development of language skills and other health reasons.

“No one can be sure about the timing and the scale of another virus wave. Thorough preparations for the seventh wave are a must,” Jung said.

In the last 24 hours, the country reported 14,168 new cases, including 220 from overseas, bringing the total caseload to 24,634,296, the KDCA said.

It is the smallest figure since July 11, when the daily figure came to 12,672.

On Monday, the country reported 33 more fatalities from Covid-19, raising the death toll to 28,246.

Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier: Fargana’s breezy half-ton guides Bangladesh to win over Ireland in final

0

Fargana Hoque scored a breezy half-century and leg-spinner Rumana Ahmed grabbed three wickets as Bangladesh defeated Ireland by seven runs to emerge champions in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2022 here.

The two teams have already qualified to play in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa next year by virtue of securing a place in the final of the Qualifier.

Electing to bat first in the Qualifier final, Bangladesh posted a below-par 120/8 that was helped by Fargana Hoque’s 61 off 55 balls. Only one other Bangladesh batter made double digits as Ireland came up with some riveting bowling display.

Fargana made just over half of the team runs from the top of the order, but the lack of support and the regular fall of wickets at the other end meant that she could not accelerate much as Bangladesh finished on 120/8.

Ireland skipper Laura Delany starred with the ball with 3/27 while Arlene Kelly and Cara Murray took two wickets apiece.

In reply, Sanjida Akter and Nahida Akter reduced Ireland to 24/3, taking out the top order of the European side. Delany and Eimear Richardson tried to put up a fight, but Bangladesh struck again to sink Ireland further, according to ICC.

Kelly and Murray then injected late momentum into the Ireland innings, taking them from 76/8 to within touching distance of the target. The partnership gave Ireland hopes of a title win at the Qualifiers, but 15 runs off the final over was still a huge ask, and they eventually fell seven runs short.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh Women 120/8 in 20 overs (Fargana Hoque 61; Laura Delany 3/27) beat Ireland Women 113/9(Arlene Kelly 28 not out; Rumana Ahmed 3/24, Shohely Akhter 2/20) by seven runs.

British pound plunges to all-time low against USD

The British pound has plunged to its lowest level against the US dollar since decimalization in 1971, the media reported on Monday.

During early Asia trade on Monday morning, the pound fell by more than 4 percent to $1.0327 before regaining some ground to around $1.05, said the in report.

Monday’s slump came just two days after the British currency fell to a fresh 37-year low against the US dollar as investors worried that large-scale tax cuts announced by the government would bring much fiscal uncertainty.

On September 23, the pound tumbled more than 3 percent and traded below $1.10 — its lowest level since 1985, Xinhua news agency reported.

The record lows came in the backdrop of Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s unveiling of his ambitious plan of historic tax cuts and boosting economic growth.

The new measures include canceling the planned rise in corporation tax to 25 percent, keeping it at 19 percent, and reversing this April’s 1.25 percentage point rise in National Insurance contributions.

Kwarteng on September 23 also announced a 1 percent cut to the basic rate of income tax to 19 percent in April 2023, a year earlier than planned.

The 45 percent additional rate of income tax on earnings above 150,000 pounds will be scrapped.

Meanwhile, the UK’s consumer price index (CPI) rose by 9.9 percent in the 12 months to August.

To tackle high inflation, the Bank of England (BoE) on Thursday increased interest rates by 0.5 percentage points to 2.25 percent, the highest since 2008.

Elevated inflation, the ongoing energy crisis in Europe, and the strengthening US dollar have continued to put pressure on the British pound.

Also on Monday, the euro touched a fresh 20-year-low against the dollar in morning Asia trade amid investor concerns about the risk of recession as winter approaches with no sign of an end to the energy crisis or the war in Ukraine.
