World Men 6Red Snooker: Dhvaj stuns newly-crowned Asian champion Siyavosh Mozayani

0

Indian player Dhvaj Haria stunned the recently-crowned Asian Champion of 6Red Snooker Siyavosh Mozayani of Iran and won his first match 4-2.

From the beginning Dhvaj Haria showed great calmness and self-belief, not being perturbed by his opponent Siyavosh Mozayani, who lifted the Asian 6 red title by 5 frames to 4 on Wednesday, in a highly competitive final encounter dethroning his compatriot Amir Sarkosh, the winner of the last year’s edition.

In the very first frame, a missed brown by Siyavosh gave Haria a good opportunity which he cleverly utilized by giving snooker. However, failure to break the snooker by Siyavosh saw Haria clearing the remaining colors to go ahead 1-0 in a best of seven frames league match.

In a scrappy second frame, Haria resorted to safe play and did not allow Siyavosh to find a scoring opportunity and ultimately trapped him with a deadly safety and went ahead 2-0.

The 3rd frame was somewhat a repetition of the second frame when Haria with small yet useful runs wrapped up that too without allowing Siavosh to open his account. The 4th and 5th frames saw Siyavosh scoring from some difficult openings and wrapped up both the frames, with a break of 43 in the 5th.

In the 6th frame both the players were going level and Siyavosh got a good opportunity to level the frame score but a missed pink played with the rest saw Haria taking away both pink and black to win the frame and match by 4-2.

Meanwhile, other Indian players also won their respective matches on an opening day. Ace cueist Pankaj Advani played two matches on Thursday — he won 4-0 against Mohamed Emeesh of Libya and 4-1 against Enkhtuvshin Bat-Ochir of Mongolia.

Kamal Chawla, Brijesh Damani, S. Shrikrishna, and the defending champion Laxman Rawat also won their respective matches 4-2, 4-1, 4-0, and 4-2.

Apple is gearing up to showcase a demo of its Emergency SOS via Satellite feature with iOS 16.1 release for iPhone 14 users.

The Emergency SOS via Satellite update is expected to be released to the public in October and the satellite features will be available in November.

The ‘Satellite Connection Demo’ can be accessed at any time via the Emergency SOS menu within the Settings app once it becomes available.

Representatives from 90 nations join hands to revive Modern Pythian Games

0

It was a historical day for the Modern Pythian Games when Royal Majesties, Ambassadors, entrepreneurs, cultural organizations, and artisans from more than 90 nations came together to constitute the International Pythian Council and to celebrate the revival of “Modern Pythian Games” before the global media on September 29 in Delhi.

Founder of the modern Pythian Games, Bijender Goel addressed the press conference and briefed them on the concept of the modern Pythian Games.

Goel said the Pythian Games were to art and culture what the Olympics were to sports.
“Since 582 B.C., it has been part of the Pan Hellenic Games, along with the Olympics. Since 394 A.D., all Pan-Hellenic games have been discontinued. The Olympics Games were reintroduced in 1894,” he said.

He said that the Pythian Games had been part of Pan Hellenic games in ancient Greece and were ranked second in importance behind the Olympics.

“Unlike the Olympics, the Pythian Games also featured competitions for art and dance, which predated the athletic portion of the games, and women were allowed to take part in some events. Wrestling, chariot racing, poetry, etc. were part of the Pythian Games,” he said.

Goel said that Modern Pythian Games are a single global platform for the vibrant exchange of arts, culture, tradition, adventure, entertainment, games, e-sports, air sports, and martial arts.

“Through its multilevel structure, there are more opportunities for artisans to showcase their arts at an international level. There are opportunities for the artisans to represent their flag. It will help national economies by promoting tourism and generating employment for artisans and other stakeholders. A tool for uniting the nations through cultural diplomacy. An initiative to organize the creative industry, worth 800 billion euros, into an organized sector,” he said.

He mentioned that the creation of the founding executive board of the International Pythian Council and the appointment of founding representatives across the world is an important step toward the smooth governance of the “1st Global Cultural Movement for the Modern Pythian Games”.

Panos Kaltsis, former Mayor of Delphi has been nominated as the 1st President of the International Pythian Council and I shall manage the affairs as Secretary General.

Security, talent crunch worry Indian firms on Hybrid Cloud journey

0

As organizations face skills gaps, security challenges, and compliance obstacles, only 30 percent of the Indian firms are able to manage their Hybrid Cloud environments holistically which can create blind spots and put data at risk, a new report has said.

While businesses have embraced a variety of security techniques to secure workloads in the cloud, concerns about security still remain, according to IT major IBM.

As 85 percent of respondents in the survey have adopted a Hybrid Cloud approach which can help drive digital transformation, the majority of organizations are “struggling with the complexity to make all their cloud environments work together”.

Another issue at hand is an acute talent shortage, which can create gaps in security and compliance and cause risk across Cloud environments.

“A pragmatic holistic approach to hybrid cloud can drive immense business value by accelerating innovation, improving cost efficiency, and increasing productivity,” said Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM Technology Sales, IBM India/ South Asia.

While the research found the lack of cloud skills as a major challenge, it is “encouraging to note that 81 percent of the Indian respondents said they are creating new positions and teams to fulfill the need for more cloud skills,” he added.

Businesses also believe ensuring compliance in the cloud is currently too difficult, especially as we see enforcement of regulatory and compliance requirements heat up across the globe.

“As we see regulatory requirements grow across the globe, compliance is top of mind for business leaders. This concern is even greater for those in highly regulated industries,” said Howard Boville, Head of IBM Cloud Platform.

When it comes to managing their cloud applications, 66 percent of respondents say their team lacks the skills needed to be proficient.

As potential security gaps can cause third and fourth-party risks to loom, respondents say cybersecurity (50 percent) and data governance (49 percent) are the top challenges to fully integrating their business ecosystem into the cloud, the survey found.

IOC releases first visual identity to bolster Olympic brand’s core values

0

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released its first-ever visual identity in order to bring the Olympic brand and its core values to life, IOC announced on Wednesday.

This new visual system has been created to bolster the Olympic brand’s core values while enhancing consistency, recognition, and impact across all IOC platforms, communications, and publications, the IOC said via a media release.

“The IOC recognized the need to create a comprehensive foundational identity, designed for use across all mediums and channels,” the release said.

The entire brand rollout is expected to be completed by the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The modern Olympics are widely known for the five Olympic rings — blue, black, red, yellow, and green, designed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1913, but the latest evolution aims to bring the legacy of the games into the modern world.

“The evolved brand pushes further the Olympic brand identity through a vibrant extended palette based on the Olympic colors, inspirational illustrations, and tailor-made typography,” said May Guerraoui, Head of Brand Management at the IOC. “It’s about leveraging a new design system to communicate the brand values with emotion.”

The new design system, created by Canadian agency Hulse & Durrell and a team of international artists, typographers, and designers, features three custom-made typefaces, a series of graphic devices, 17 illustrations, and a set of guidelines for how to incorporate the identity.

“Every element has been designed to reflect the hopeful, universal, inclusive, vibrant, and progressive qualities of the Olympic brand, for use across publications, digital, environment design, and more,” the IOC release said.

Indian cyber agency warns WhatsApp users of critical bugs

0

The Indian cyber agency CERT-In on Wednesday warned WhatsApp users of multiple bugs which could be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.

In an advisory, CERT-In, under the IT Ministry, described two remote code execution vulnerabilities in Meta-owned WhatsApp in both Android and iOS versions.

The first vulnerability exists in WhatsApp due to integer overflow.

“A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute remote code in an established video call,” warned the cyber agency.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system, said CERT-In.

Hackers can also exploit the second vulnerability in WhatsApp by sending a specially-crafted video file that can put users’ information at risk.

CERT-In advised WhatsApp users to install the latest security updates.

WhatsApp has nearly 500 million users in the country, according to the third-party reports.

Binge drinking may up Covid infection risk in young women

0

Women in their mid-20s, who reported frequent binge drinking during the Covid-19 pandemic, were more likely to become infected with Covid-19, finds a new study.

The study, published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, found that young women aged 25 to 28 who reported binge drinking – four or more drinks in one sitting – had the highest self-reported prevalence of Covid-19 infection among the subgroups studied.

“Our research shows that when young women binge drink, they are also heightening their risk of contracting Covid-19. This can be due to several factors associated with binge drinking, such as being less vigilant in using preventive behavior such as social distancing when intoxicated,” said Tammy Chung from Rutgers University.

For the study, the team analyzed whether people’s use of alcohol and substances changed from before the Covid-19 pandemic to during the pandemic in a sample of young women.

They examined how characteristics such as socioeconomic status and Covid-19 infection status were associated with certain patterns of substance and alcohol use during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The study looked at seven subgroups of young women who showed similar patterns of substance use before and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Groups included those with low use of substances, cannabis use, binge drinking, cigarette or e-cigarette use combined with binge drinking, and other patterns.

Zomato says confident to make profit from inter-city food delivery

0

Online food aggregator Zomato on Wednesday said that its inter-city food delivery will start making a profit even at “a slight scale” amid concerns of the service being a logistical nightmare and a high cash-burn model.

Zomato’s VP of Global Growth Siddharth Jhawar told IANS that this is a business and they want to be profitable.

“Even at a slight scale, we’ll start making a profit. As we grow and with awareness, when people start making our offering a part of their celebrations with larger orders, we’ll be there,” he added.

Zomato recently launched ‘Intercity Legends’ which will allow customers to order dishes and delicacies from famous outlets and restaurants in other cities.

Jhawar said that food is freshly prepared by the restaurant and packed in reusable and tamper-proof containers to keep it safe during air transits.

“State-of-the-art mobile refrigeration technology preserves the food without the need to freeze it or add any kind of preservatives,” he explained.

Once you receive your order, you can microwave, air-fry, or pan-fry the food, just like any other dish out of the refrigerator.

The company is currently running this service in the Delhi-NCR region and has just started in Bengaluru.

“That said, we want to be able to serve and delight as many customers as possible. India has over 100 domestic airports. Any airport city could be a potential market. To start with, we want to serve customers in top metro cities,” Jhawar told IANS.

Zomato already covers 10 cities for the ‘Intercity Legends service.

“Over time, we will keep taking inputs from customers and keep adding to our supply. We will ramp up gradually and have plans to extend this to top cities, as we receive customer feedback about what’s working and what can be done better,” Jhawar added.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal earlier said that the new service will let customers “order and relish legendary dishes like baked rosogollas from Kolkata, biryani from Hyderabad, Mysore Pak from Bengaluru, kebabs from Lucknow, butter chicken from Old Delhi, or pyaaz kachori from Jaipur”.

Currently, the list of cities to order from are Kolkata, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Mathura, Chennai, Agra, and Bhubaneswar.

The users will only be able to order certain iconic dishes from a few select restaurants.

Rajini, Kamal say they’re eagerly awaiting ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ release

With just a couple of days left for director Mani Ratnam’s eagerly awaited magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ to hit the screens, the makers of the film have now released a video clip that shows the two biggest icons of Indian cinema – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan – explaining that they are as eager as everybody else to watch the epic film.

The video clip begins with classical scenes from two landmark blockbuster films — ‘Nayagan’, which had Kamal Haasan playing the lead, and ‘Thalapathy’, which had Rajinikanth playing the lead — being showcased in no particular order.

Interestingly, both these blockbusters were directed by Mani Ratnam and had gone on to emerge as cult classics in Tamil cinema.

Towards the end, visuals of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan participating in the audio launch event of ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, which happened at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai over 20 days ago, have been reproduced.

Rajinikanth says, “Ponniyin Selvan has marvelous characterizations. It has heroism, beauty, fear, disgust, laughter.”

Kamal, for his part, says, “This is an important film in Mani Ratnam’s successful career.

Rajini is then seen saying, “‘How would Mani have made this film? We are eagerly waiting to watch it!”

The movie is slated for a worldwide release on September 30.
