Sriya Reddy: Stories drive success, language doesn’t matter

0

Tamil actress Sriya Reddy, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming series ‘Suzhal- The Vortex’, opines that the language of cinema is very much universal in its essence as most rooted and local stories are being preferred by the audience all over the world.

Elaborating on the same, she said, “Content is key, you can’t falter with that, and language of cinema is universal. If stories are brilliant, language doesn’t matter anymore. And, for better clarity, films are being dubbed and there are subtitles too, like in the case of ‘Suzhal – The Vortex’, which is premiering in over 30 Indian and foreign languages.”

She further mentioned, “The most rooted and local stories today are being watched and appreciated across the world. Indian cinema needs to come up on the world stage, it’s already getting there, but we need to push it a little more, try a little harder.”

Agreeing with her, co-actor Kathir added, “People watching ‘Suzhal – The Vortex’, around the world will be fascinated about the cultural nuances, the micro-festival, and the narrative based in a small village in South India.”

Explaining the physical setting of the show, Aishwarya Rajesh said, “The content of our show is very rural and interesting. It is shot in the interiors of Tamil Nadu. In today’s time, something so regional has the potential to find an audience across the country, and throughout the world hopefully, because people are always eager to know more, witness something new.”

‘Suzhal- The Vortex’ is set to premiere on June 17 on Prime Video, in over 30 Indian and foreign languages, including French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Castilian Spanish, Latin Spanish, Arabic, Turkish and Japanese.

2026 FIFA World Cup to be held across 16 cities including Los Angeles and Miami

0

The United States will have 11 of the 16 host cities at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will also feature matches in Mexico and Canada, the world football governing body has said.

The 2026 edition of the World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams and three host countries, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Thursday night that he was delighted by the “unparalleled competitiveness of this selection process”.

Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, and New York/New Jersey were the US cities named during an event in New York City.

Mexico will hold games in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey while Canada’s Vancouver and Toronto were also chosen from a preliminary list of 22.

The cities which missed out were Cincinnati, Denver, Nashville, Orlando, Washington DC/Baltimore, and Edmonton.

The US will be staging the event for a second time, having also done so in 1994. Mexico was the tournament host in 1970 and 1986.

“We congratulate the 16 FIFA World Cup host cities on their outstanding commitment and passion. Today is a historic day — for everyone in those cities and states, for FIFA, for Canada, the USA, and Mexico who will put on the greatest show on Earth. We look forward to working together with them to deliver what will be an unprecedented FIFA World Cup and a game-changer as we strive to make football truly global,” said Infantino.

“We were delighted by the unparalleled competitiveness of this selection process. We are extremely grateful not only to the 16 cities that have been selected but also to the other six – with whom we look forward to continuing to engage and explore additional opportunities to welcome fans and participating teams. This has always been a FIFA World Cup of three countries, and that undoubtedly will have a tremendous impact on the whole region and the wider football community,” added FIFA vice-president and Concacaf president Victor Montagliani.

Finch blames poor fielding, batting for loss to Sri Lanka in 2nd ODI

0

Australia skipper Aaron Finch’s poor run with the bat, which has dogged him since the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE, might have contributed to the team’s defeat against Sri Lanka at Pallekele on Thursday night, but the 35-year-old blamed collective fielding and batting for the 26-run (DL) loss, which allowed the hosts to equalize the series at 1-1.

Finch was the first Australia batter to depart on 14, and later a well-set David Warner was unlucky to lose his wicket on 37, denying the tourists the start they would have wanted in the chase. Four Australian players fell in the 20s and 30s after making confident starts, while Finch (14), Marnus Labushchagne (18), and wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey (15) too fell cheaply.

Finch, whose string of poor scores continued in the Indian Premier League as well, said post-match that chasing was an area his side will look to improve as the five-match ODI series progresses.

“The fielding, we were very poor. Guys getting starts and not going on, similar to the last game. It was very poor (in the field)… we could have attacked the ball more. Chasing in these conditions is something we need to keep improving on. Tonight showed we were off the pace a bit,” said Finch.

Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka said that despite his side not managing a very competitive score, he was confident his bowlers would be able to defend the total.

“The Australians bowled really well so were short a few runs…but had a good feeling my bowlers would defend the target. We need to come up with the right options (with the bat). Chamika (Karunaratne) is a born warrior and whenever I throw the ball he delivers. I had a lot of trust in (Dunith Wellalage) as well. When I threw the ball he’s ready to take the chance.”

Karunaratne ended up with figures of 3/47 in seven overs.

Karunaratne, who was adjudged Player of the Match said, “After a long time I was waiting for this moment. I know I can do well and it’s come today and I’m so happy about it. Everything is planned…I’m always thinking out of the box. I’m always challenging batsmen. I always like to take a risk.”

Ana de Armas stuns as Marilyn Monroe in ‘Blonde’ trailer

0

Actress Ana de Armas took everyone by surprise as she looked every inch like Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe in the latest ‘Blonde’ trailer.

Netflix has debuted the first evocative footage from Andrew Dominik’s ‘Blonde’. The movie, based on the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, is notable for its NC-17 rating, reports Variety’.

The supporting cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel, and Evan Williams.

The official ‘Blonde’ synopsis from Netflix reads: “(The film) boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, ‘Blonde’ blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”

“Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start — to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens,” de Armas recently told Netflix Queue.

“He wanted the world to experience what it actually felt like to not only be Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane. I found that to be the most daring, unapologetic, and feminist take on her story that I had ever seen.”

“We worked on this film for hours, every single day for almost a year,” de Armas added.

“I read Joyce’s novel, studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, films — anything I could get my hands on. Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph. We’d pore over every detail in the photo and debate what was happening in it.”

“The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible.”

‘Blonde’ releases globally on Netflix on September 23.

YouTube Shorts now being watched by over 1.5 bn users

0

Google-owned music and video streaming platform YouTube has confirmed that more than 1.5 billion logged-in users are now watching Shorts every month, less than two years after its launch.

According to TechCrunch, related to its new milestone, YouTube also promoted Shorts’ ability to drive viewers to creators’ long-form video channels as a byproduct of its investments in Shorts.

As per the report, it is referring to the trend as “the rise of the multiformat creator” but, in reality, it seems to be more an admission that YouTube still sees more value in its longer-form content.

The company, in its announcement, positioned its video platform as one that better reflects the reality of today’s viewer, who engages with video at different times and places throughout the day.

In some cases, users will want to quickly scroll through shorter content, such as when killing time while out and about. At other times, they may be able to watch for longer periods and will turn to traditional YouTube videos to do so, the report said.

However, YouTube’s report does not take into account how TikTok has been steadily inching into its territory with long-form content of its own, and could potentially lure creators to a platform where both shorter and longer content is more intertwined.

NFTs, crypto are ‘100% based on greater fool theory’: Bill Gates

0

Tech billionaire Bill Gates has said that he holds no position in cryptocurrencies or non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as they are “100 percent based on greater fool theory”.

The theory is a financial concept that even overpriced assets can make money as long as you find a bigger idiot to sell them to.

Gates said he rather preferred investing in assets with tangible outputs, like farms or factories, “or a company where they make products”. He was speaking at an event on climate change hosted by TechCrunch.

“I’m not involved in that. I’m not long or short in any of those things,” Gates said on crypto and NFTs. He said he was suspicious of these assets being designed to “avoid taxation or any sort of government rules”.

“Obviously, expensive digital images of monkeys are going to improve the world immensely,” said Gates, referring to the flagship NFT project, Bored Ape Yacht Club.

This is not the first time Gates has expressed skepticism about cryptocurrencies.

In an interview last year, he worried about the dangers of regular investors buying into Bitcoin, especially when the cryptocurrency’s value was so volatile and could be tanked on the basis of a tweet from a prominent investor, like Elon Musk, the Verge reported.

“I do think people get bought into these manias who may not have as much money to spare,” Gates had said. “My general thought would be that if you have less money than Elon, you should probably watch out.”

Gates’ warnings about volatility were prophetic. When he was speaking in 2021, Bitcoin was surging in price but later towards year-end it slumped dramatically, the report said.

Since then, the price of Bitcoin has crashed once again. This dramatic fall is part of a wider set of convulsions rocking the crypto world, after the collapse of the so-called “stablecoin” Terra in May and the ongoing failure of crypto lending platform Celsius.

Similarly, prices for NFTs have also fallen sharply. Some of the biggest projects, like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, have more than halved in value. At the same time, trading volume has increased, as buyers seek to snap up digital assets at rock-bottom prices, the report said.
