IND v SA: Pant has to stop looking for aerial shots far outside off-stump, says Gavaskar

0

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the shot selection of skipper Rishabh Pant in the T20I series, saying that the wicketkeeper-batter has to stop looking for aerial shots against balls that are outside the off-stump.

In the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, Pant has made scores of 29, 5, 6, and 17. But the left-hander has repeatedly fallen for the wide outside the off-stump trap laid for him by the South Africa bowlers trying to bowl away from his hitting arc.

On all four occasions in the series, Pant has tried to play big shots against balls far outside the off-stump but he lost some bit of his balance after playing the shot and was caught out on all four occasions in the off-side.

“He hasn’t learned. He hasn’t learned from his previous three dismissals. They throw wide, and he keeps going for it. He can’t throw enough muscle on that. He has got to stop looking to go aerial that far outside the off-stump,” said Gavaskar while commentating on the fourth T20I in Rajkot.

In Rajkot, Pant struggled to break free and when he tried to slap a wide the off-stump ball from left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj over the off-side, he was caught at short third man. “There is no way he’s going to get enough on it. It has gone to short-third (man)! They all plan it, South African bowlers and Temba Bavuma… just bowl wide outside the off-stump and you will get him,” added Gavaskar.

Gavaskar pointed out that Pant’s pattern of similar dismissals repeating itself is not good news for the Indian team. “10 times he has been dismissed wide outside off-stump (in T20 matches this year). Some of them would have been called wide if he hadn’t made contact with it.

“Because he’s so far away, he has to reach out for it. He will never get enough power on it. To keep getting out in the same series in the same manner, for a captain of the Indian team, that’s not a good sign.”

With ‘Dhaakad’ earning just Rs 2.58 cr, has Kangana ceased to be a bankable star?

0

Bollywood films may not be witnessing the best of times at the box-office but the real shocker comes from the Kangana Ranaut-starrer ‘Dhaakad’ which managed to earn an embarrassing figure of just Rs 2.58 crore as per ‘Bollywood Hungama’ against its monumental reported budget of Rs 85 crore.

The film, which was released in cinemas on May 20, clashed head-on with the Kartik Aaryan-starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’. While the horror-comedy sequel had a flying start at the box office heading for lifetime collections of close to Rs 180 crore, ‘Dhaakad’ failed to pull in the crowd despite decent marketing and buzz.

Independent film trade analyst Sumit Kadel explains the reasons behind the debacle that ‘Dhaakad’ has turned out to be. In his opinion, ‘Dhaakad’ alone is not a standalone story to have been subjected to such poor turnout. There’s a pattern, big-budget films are getting severely bombed by the audience in cinemas.

Sumit told IANS, “Post-pandemic, many big films led by big stars like ‘Anek’ and ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ tanked at the box office badly. They failed to collect even Rs 15 crore in their lifetime. The same happened with ‘Dhaakad’, the audience was not at all interested in watching a woman-centric Hollywood style kind of action film.”

But, there’s a more worrying trend that’s forming the undercurrent and it’s definitely not good news for Kangana. The actress’ stardom seems to be fading, as Sumit says, “Kangana’s box-office pull is going downwards with each passing year.”

He however is quick to point out an exception, “‘Manikarnika’ (Kangana’s directorial debut) was an exception which was an average grosser.” Come to think of it, “her last clean hit was ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ way back in 2015,” Sumit furnishes the reason supporting his analysis.

“It’s not that ‘Dhaakad’ was an out and out bad cinematic experience, the film boasted of sleek action sequences, tout camerawork, and a tasteful color palette but the biggest pillar that a film rests on – the story, turned out to the be the weakest one for the film.”

“Audience wants to watch entertainers which can justify their big-screen experience and their hard-earned money”, the trade analyst firmly puts across his point maintaining that it’s the age of good content coupled with high production value.

For all said and done, entertainment reigns supreme for the film to work at the box office, “High on content films with less entertainment value and social message kind of films would not work at the box office unless the content is extraordinary like ‘The Kashmir Files’,” he adds.

As for ‘Dhaakad’ the damage seems to have been compounded just because of the makers’ misplaced confidence, “They were so confident about their product that they didn’t even sell their film to digital and satellite distributors, and now looking at such poor performance of the film nobody is willing to buy it even scrap value,” Sumit concludes.

It was tough for me to come to terms with being dropped, but I was very bull-headed: Karthik

0

India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has revealed how difficult it was for him to come to terms with being dropped from the India team, adding that he had made it a big issue of getting his spot back, practicing endlessly, and desperately to again wear the jersey.

Karthik smashed a superb 27-ball 55 in the fourth T20I against South Africa at Rajkot as India defeated the tourists by 82 runs to level the series at 2-2 on Friday night.

Talking about his return to the India side after being in the wilderness for three years, Karthik said, “I was very bull-headed that I want to play… that I want to play this (T20) World Cup (in Australia this year). I think it is very important in my life because I’ve been around for so long, I know what it feels to be dropped (from the Indian side).

“I also know how valuable it is to play for Team India, so I wanted to do something special and luckily Royal Challengers Bangalore gave me the platform, the role that I really enjoyed doing at the backend. I practiced for it, I worked for it and see it come through and then obviously get the love and affection from everyone,” said Karthik in interaction with Hardik Pandya on BCCI.TV.

Karthik added that now that he was being made to feel secure in the side, his next aim was to help India lift the elusive T20 World Cup trophy when the tournament takes place in Australia in October-November this year.

“Now that I’m here, I want to be that guy, who can help Team India win those tough games. I want to be in that situation, stay and do something special every time. I want to do this because I’ve seen this team from the outside. I know how tough it is to be a part of this team… the kind of competition there is, the kind of talent there is in the dressing room is phenomenal. So, just to be around this dressing room, the vibes are very different, I want to enjoy it a lot,” said Karthik.

Karthik said that he had envisaged match situations on the flight from Visakhapatnam to Rajkot, which helped him play the match-defining hurricane knock in the fourth T20I.

“From Vizag to Rajkot we had this conversation about how to counter certain situations. As a middle-order batter, you need to be very aware of who you can target, and how you can do that. That helped, for a start, and obviously, when I’m batting with you (Pandya), it’s very comfortable. It was a very important innings for us because obviously being 1-2 down and then dominating the first 10-12 overs of this game. They put us under a lot of pressure. It was a hard wicket to bat on so I though let us put the pressure back on them. And the way we batted was important,” added Karthik.

“We have trained very well and we are quite excited because this is a huge opportunity for us to showcase our talent. This trip is also a fantastic exposure for our side. So we’re just going to take it one game at a time, focus on ourselves and our game, and, yes, improve with each game,” Dungdung said.

Following their game against Ireland on June 19, India will go up against the Netherlands on June 20. Thereafter, the team will face Ukraine on June 22, before locking horns with the US in their final league match on June 23.

Twitter employees sceptical about their future under Musk

0

Twitter employees are sceptical about their future after Elon Musk addressed them this week, saying they are doing their best to stay focused on work.

The future of Twitter hangs in the balance and employees’ reaction after the virtual meeting with Musk was “mostly negative,” reports The Verge.

Musk told Twitter employees that he particularly wants to be involved in the product and expects the team to listen to his input on new features.

He said he’s very involved at Tesla, and he would adopt a similar leadership style at Twitter which he is buying for $44 billion (the deal is on hold till Musk is sure about the actual number of bots on Twitter).

“Right now, costs exceed revenue. That’s not a great situation,” he told them.

Employees said that it was “jarring to hear someone speak with so much confidence about a company that at best Musk is only beginning to understand”.

As employees wondered what the acquisition will mean for them, Musk vaguely spoke about the future of civilization.

“I want Twitter to contribute to a better, long-lasting civilization where we better understand the nature of reality,” he told them.

Musk, however, said he does want to “drive the product in a particular direction” and lead improvement on the platform’s software, product, and design.

“I don’t mind doing other things related to operating a company, but there are chores. I really just want to make sure that the product evolves rapidly and in a good way. I don’t really care what the title is, but obviously, people do need to listen to me,” he noted.

He also clarified that he strongly prefers to work in person and would confirm with managers that remote employees were contributing positively to the company.

Sai Pallavi’s comment on the lynching of ‘cow smugglers’ provokes police complaint

0

A statement by Sai Pallavi in a YouTube interview on the lynching of an alleged cow smuggler has triggered a social media controversy just as her Telugu film, ‘Virata Parvam’, hit the big screens.

In a YouTube interview, the actress discussed the exodus of Pandits from Kashmir in the early 1990s and compared it with the recent incidents of lynching of suspected cow smugglers.

The celebrated actress, who says she is ideologically neutral, stated: “The film ‘The Kashmir Files’ depicts the assassination of Kashmiri Pandits. A man was recently slain for carrying a cow because he was suspected of being a Muslim. The perpetrators shouted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ after killing the victim. Where is the line drawn between what occurred in Kashmir and what occurred recently?”

The comment provoked a unit of the Bajrang Dal to file a complaint in Hyderabad. The Bajrang Dal Bhagyanagar displayed their complaint letter on Twitter and said that a case had been filed against the actress at the Sultanbazar P.S.

They asked Sai Pallavi to apologize to the entire country, particularly to Kashmiri Pandits, for her “venomous” statements. They added that if she did not do so, “the situation will deteriorate further”.

Some of Sai Pallavi’s admirers have defended her views on social media, while others have expressed their unhappiness.

‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff series based around Jon Snow is in early development.

According to ‘Variety’, actor Kit Harington is attached to reprise his role as the fan-favorite hero in the live-action show, which would take place after the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ — potentially opening up what many thoughts were an iron-clad ending to the wildly popular series.

In the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’, Snow realized his true identity and that he could be an heir to the Iron Throne.

The series concluded with his exile from Westeros as he rides into the Haunted Forest with Ghost and the Wildlings to begin a new life, reports Variety’.

Since the potential Jon Snow sequel series would take place after the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’, it’s possible that familiar characters — such as his half-siblings Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) — could show their faces.

HBO’s upcoming spinoff house of the Dragon, which is set 200 years before the original series, premieres on Aug. 21. Other “Game of Thrones” spinoffs in development include ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’, ‘10,000 Ships’, ‘9 Voyages’, Flea Bottom’ and an animated series.

Harington was nominated for two Emmys, in supporting actor and lead actor in a drama series, during his time on ‘Game of Thrones’.

After the series ended in 2019, Harington has starred in Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ as Dane Whitman, appeared in an episode of Amazon’s ‘Modern Love’, and headlined Shakespeare’s ‘Henry V’ at the Donmar Warehouse in London.

Dogecoin crypto investor sues Elon Musk for $258 bn in the US

0

As millions of investors lose their hard-earned money in the global crypto meltdown, an American Dogecoin cryptocurrency investor has sued Elon Musk, Tesla, and SpaceX for $258 billion for allegedly operating an illegal racketeering enterprise to inflate the price of Dogecoin.

Called;Dogefather’, Musk has long been a vocal proponent of Dogecoin and tweeted several times in the past to help spike the price of the digital token.

A class-action lawsuit has been filed in a federal court in Manhattan, and the Dogecoin investor called for triple the damages of $86 billion, which is how much the plaintiff alleges has been lost by Dogecoin investors since Musk started tweeting about it, reports TechCrunch.

Currently, the Dogecoin cryptocurrency has tumbled from its high of nearly $0.74 to just over $0.05 in recent days.

“Defendants falsely and deceptively claim that Dogecoin is a legitimate investment when it has no value at all,” the plaintiff Keith Johnson said in the complaint.

“Since Defendant Musk and his corporations SpaceX and Tesla, Inc began purchasing, developing, promoting, supporting and operating Dogecoin in 2019, Plaintiff and the class have lost approximately $86 billion in this Crypto Pyramid Scheme,” he added.

Musk was yet to react to the class-action lawsuit.

Earlier this year, Musk announced that the company’s supercharging stations will accept the cryptocurrency Dogecoin as payment.

“Of course, you can pay in Doge (sic),” said Musk in response to a tweet.

Tesla does accept Doge in its online store and there have been rumors of Tesla eventually accepting the crypto as a form of payment for its vehicles.

In a recent interview, Musk endorsed Dogecoin over any other crypto coin.

“The transaction value of Bitcoin is low and the cost per transaction is high. At least at a space level, it is suitable as a store of value. But fundamentally, Bitcoin is not a good substitute for transactional currency,” he said.

Musk has confirmed that he has a significant personal investment in Bitcoin on top of Tesla’s investment and he has smaller Ethereum and Dogecoin holdings.
