Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis arrested in Italy on sexual assault charges

0

Oscar-winning Canadian screenwriter and director Paul Haggis has been arrested in Ostuni, Italy, on charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury reportedly inflicted upon a still-unidentified woman who has pressed charges.

According to several Italian press reports and a note from the public prosecutor of the nearby city of Brindisi, Haggis is charged with forcing a young “foreign”, meaning non-Italian, woman to undergo sexual intercourse over the course of two days in Ostuni, where he was scheduled to hold several master classes at the Allora Fest, a new film event being launched by Los Angeles-based Italian journalist Silvia Bizio and Spanish art critic Sol Costales Doulton set to run from June 21-26, reports ‘Variety’.

Bizio has confirmed to Variety that Haggis is under arrest.

“Under Italian law, I cannot discuss the evidence,” Haggis’ longtime personal attorney Priya Chaudhry said in a statement. “That said, I am confident that all allegations will be dismissed against Mr. Haggis. He is totally innocent and willing to fully cooperate with the authorities so the truth comes out quickly.”

In a statement, The Allora Fest said they have “learned with dismay and shock the news that Paul Haggis is in custody for alleged violence”.

According to ‘Variety’, the fest’s directors “immediately proceeded to remove any participation of the director from the event” and “At the same time, they express full solidarity with the woman involved”, they added.

“The themes chosen for the festival are, among others, those of equality, gender equality, and solidarity. As professionals and women they are dismayed and hope that the festival will help foster more information and awareness on such a topical and increasingly pressing issue,” the statement went on to note.

According to an Italian police report, the alleged victim, after being assaulted, was taken by Haggis to the Papola Casale airport in Brindisi and left there on Friday morning at the crack of dawn, despite her “precarious physical and psychological conditions,” reports ‘Variety’.

At the airport, the alleged rape victim, in a “confused state”, according to the report, was assisted by the airport staff and border police who, after having given her first aid, accompanied her to the offices of the Italian Squadra mobile police unit. Police agents then took the woman to the A. Perrino hospital in Brindisi, where Italy’s so-called “pink protocol” for rape victims was put into effect.

Subsequently, the alleged victim filed formal charges against Haggis.

Haggis, who wrote ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and co-wrote and directed ‘Crash’, both of which he won an Oscar for, was sued in 2018 by publicist Haleigh Breest, who alleged that he had violently raped her after a premiere in 2013.

The suit prompted three additional women to come forward with their own sexual misconduct accusations against Haggis, who has vehemently denied the claims.

The trial is still pending, due to Covid delays.

Pak restaurant uses ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ scene for online ad, receives criticism

0

A Pakistani restaurant has received criticism on social media after using a scene from the popular Bollywood film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ starring Alia Bhatt in order to promote an offer meant only for men.

In the Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial, Alia plays the role of prostitute Gangubai who goes on to become an influential brothel owner.

Does ‘Srivalli’ gets killed in ‘Pushpa 2’?

0

Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna – starrer ‘Pushpa 2’, is yet to go on the floors. Meanwhile, speculations about the second part of Sukumar’s directorial are rife.

Netizens have been making guesses about the nature of the Pushpa Raj-Bhanwar Singh Shekawath (played by Fahadh Fassil) clash in the second installment of the blockbuster movie ‘Pushpa’, while things around Rashmika Mandanna’s role are majorly discussed too.

Speculations are rife that Rashmika Mandanna’s character, Srivalli, is killed by the villains, leaving Allu Arjun’s character outraged and devastated. There’s no way of knowing if Sukumar will infuse this side of the story, but Twitter users speculate on two possibilities.

The cliche of villains murdering the heroine in order to extract revenge on the hero is no longer relevant. Despite the old nature of the element, ‘KGF 2’ utilised it to perfection, because of Prashanth Neel’s exceptional knack for massive scene mounting.

Because the audience should sympathise with the smuggler-hero, ‘Pushpa Raj’ was disgraced and labelled a bastard by his opponents in the first section. If the same notion is repeated through the heroine’s death in the second part, it will appear repetitive. Well, Sukumar, the captain of the ship, is still on his way, giving final touches to the script for ‘Pushpa 2’ before the team begins filming in August.

Everyone deserves to maintain their friendships and the politicians ought to realize how their politics affects it.”

It was in response to this tweet that Khushbu said that her friendship with Kamal Haasan, who heads the Makkal Needhi Maiam, was beyond politics.

Sai Pallavi clarifies after a row over her cow vigilantism remarks

0

The continued backlash over Sai Pallavi’s comments in an interview looks to be having a significant influence on her.

Sai Pallavi has had enough of the love and hate on social media and has decided to put an end to it.

The ‘Fidaa’ actress has clarified what she actually meant by releasing a video.

Sai Pallavi on Saturday created a video in which she clarified the situation and expressed her feelings. “This is the first time getting on live and clarifying something,” she remarked in her video.

“This is also the first time I’m hesitant to voice my feelings because I’m afraid my words may be misunderstood.”

“I was recently asked if I am left or right supporter, and I responded unequivocally that I am neither. Before we identify ourselves with our views, I was aware that we should first be good human beings. I went on to expound on two of the points I made earlier, both of which had a significant impact on me and left me traumatized for days,” Sai Pallavi conveyed. “I must quote an incident, when I had a chance to speak to the director of ‘The Kashmir Files’, and expressed my dissatisfaction with the people’s suffering at the time. I said that I was traumatized for days together.”

“Being who I am, I would never minimize a tragedy such as the genocide and the generations of people who have been affected by it.”

Sai Pallavi later explained, “Having said that, I cannot forget the incident of a man being lynched, which obviously, had as much impact as the above incident on me”.

“I believe that violence in any form is unacceptable and that it is a big sin to commit it in the name of faith.

“This is all I had to say, but it was distressing to see so many people rationalizing the mob lynching incident on the Internet. I don’t believe any of us has the authority to take another person’s life. As a medical graduate, I think that all lives are valuable and equal.”

Sai Pallavi went on to explain, “I pray the day never comes when a child is afraid of his or her own individuality. I hope we aren’t moving in that direction. I recall chanting ‘All Indians are my brothers and sisters’ when I was 14 years old, and it stuck with me for the rest of my life.”

“It was also quite disappointing to find that a number of well-known people and websites had carried a fragment from a previous interview without having seen the entire interview or the sincerity of what was stated,” Sai Pallavi expressed.

“I’d like to take this occasion to express my gratitude to those who stood by me when I was feeling so alone and uncertain, unsure of what wrong I had done. It was uplifting to see so many individuals speaking up in favor of me. They seemed to recognize me for who I am. ‘Happiness, peace, and love to you all,” she said, as she ended the video.

Earlier, during her promotions for ‘Virata Parvam’, Sai Pallavi had stated that she views every inhumane act done in the name of religion as the same. But, the examples she had quoted in the interview, sparked much controversy. It appears that Sai Pallavi has clarified the situation, and the dispute may end now.

Box-office collections of Kamal Haasan-starrer ‘Vikram’ to touch Rs 350 cr mark

0

Director Lokesh Kanakaraj’s action entertainer ‘Vikram’ continues to shatter records at the box office, even as it seems well placed to touch the magical figure of Rs 350 crores just from its theatrical collections this weekend.

Talking to IANS, Entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai said, “The gross theatrical collections of ‘Vikram’ is expected to touch the Rs 350 crore mark this weekend.”

On Friday, the team of ‘Vikram’ organized a huge success meeting to mark the all-time records the film was smashing.

The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including director Lokesh, actor Kamal Haasan, music director Anirudh, and Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Speaking on the occasion, Udhayanidhi, whose Red Giant Movies holds the film’s distribution rights for Tamil Nadu disclosed, “We knew the film would become a hit but we did not know it would become such a big hit. We have entered the third week and just the share itself is Rs 75 crores. So far, no Tamil cinema has earned so much. The film is still going strong. As far as I know, the pressure for tickets to this film is going to be there for another five to six weeks. ”

Sanjay Wadhwa, the Managing director of AP International, which is the international distribution partner of the film, said, the film had broken records in every single country.

“I will be glad to inform you that overseas collections of ‘Vikram’ will touch Rs 100 crores by Monday,” he informed.

In Kerala, the film, which was distributed by producer Shibu Thameens, has already made Rs 35 crores as of Friday, the highest for a Tamil film in Kerala so far.

Industry experts say that the film is going strong and the box office collections could go up to being as high as Rs 375 crores.

Says Sreedhar Pillai, “I see ‘Vikram’s’ gross box office collections being anywhere between Rs 350 – Rs 375 crore.”

The veteran tracker says that these are gross collections and that apart from this, all other rights including OTT and satellite rights of the film had been pre-sold for a sum of Rs 150 – 175 crore.

The film has come as a godsend to both the film industry and theatres, which had been hit hard by the pandemic. The film’s trailblazing performance, experts opine, will give a big boost to the film business.

Ranji Trophy: Kartikeya leads Madhya Pradesh to 174-run win over Bengal, sets up title clash with Mumbai

0

Kumar Kartikeya Singh picked up a five-wicket haul in the semi-final of Ranji trophy 2021/22 and led Madhya Pradesh to beat Bengal by 174 runs and reach the final of the tournament for the first time since 1998/99.

Madhya Pradesh will now take on 41-time champions Mumbai at the Chinnaswamy Stadium from June 22 to 26.

After picking up a six-wicket haul against Punjab in the quarter-final last week, Kartikeya sizzled again in the second innings of a Ranji Trophy knockout match this season, picking 5/67 in 32 overs to bowl out Bengal for 175 in 65.2 overs.

The start of Saturday’s proceedings was delayed due to overnight rain until the clock struck 10:45 am. Madhya Pradesh instantly had success on the second ball of the day, with Gaurav Yadav taking out Anustup Majumdar on an expansive drive nicked behind to keeper Himanshu Mantri.

But Bengal tried to delay the inevitable through its last recognized batting pair of captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, who top-scored with 78, and Shahbaz Ahmed showing resistance with an unbeaten 22. The duo batted well putting a stand of 38 runs for the sixth wicket.

But post-lunch, Easwaran’s stoic resistance ended when Kartikeya knocked over his stumps with a delivery that kept low, with off-stump uprooted. Post his fall, Kartikeya and Gaurav Yadav wiped off the tail, triggering a collapse from 135/6 to 175 all out.

Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Mumbai batted till the declaration happened at 533/4 in 156 overs, with Sarfaraz Khan and Shams Mulani making unbeaten scores of 59 and 51 respectively. As soon as Mulani got his fifty, Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh players shook hands as the semi-final ended in a draw.

It meant that Mumbai sealed their qualification to the final on the basis on first innings lead taken in a drawn affair after bowling out Uttar Pradesh for 180.

Now the stage is all set for a grand final in Bengaluru between Madhya Pradesh, coached by Chandrakant Pandit and Mumbai, coached by Amol Mazumdar. Mumbai have lifted the Ranji Trophy eight times since Madhya Pradesh last played in the final of the tournament.

Now, these two teams, who have been consistent throughout the tournament, will face-off against each other for the coveted silverware.

Brief Scores: Madhya Pradesh 341 and 281 beat Bengal 273 and 175 all out in 65.2 overs (Abhimanyu Easwaran 78, Kumar Kartikeya Singh 5/67), by 174 runs.

Mumbai 393 & 533/4 decl (Yashasvi Jaiswal 181, Armaan Jaffer 127) drew with Uttar Pradesh 180, lead by 746 runs (Mumbai qualify on first innings lead)

IND v SA: Pant has to stop looking for aerial shots far outside off-stump, says Gavaskar

0

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the shot selection of skipper Rishabh Pant in the T20I series, saying that the wicketkeeper-batter has to stop looking for aerial shots against balls that are outside the off-stump.

In the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, Pant has made scores of 29, 5, 6, and 17. But the left-hander has repeatedly fallen for the wide outside the off-stump trap laid for him by the South Africa bowlers trying to bowl away from his hitting arc.

On all four occasions in the series, Pant has tried to play big shots against balls far outside the off-stump but he lost some bit of his balance after playing the shot and was caught out on all four occasions in the off-side.

“He hasn’t learned. He hasn’t learned from his previous three dismissals. They throw wide, and he keeps going for it. He can’t throw enough muscle on that. He has got to stop looking to go aerial that far outside the off-stump,” said Gavaskar while commentating on the fourth T20I in Rajkot.

In Rajkot, Pant struggled to break free and when he tried to slap a wide the off-stump ball from left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj over the off-side, he was caught at short third man. “There is no way he’s going to get enough on it. It has gone to short-third (man)! They all plan it, South African bowlers and Temba Bavuma… just bowl wide outside the off-stump and you will get him,” added Gavaskar.

Gavaskar pointed out that Pant’s pattern of similar dismissals repeating itself is not good news for the Indian team. “10 times he has been dismissed wide outside off-stump (in T20 matches this year). Some of them would have been called wide if he hadn’t made contact with it.

“Because he’s so far away, he has to reach out for it. He will never get enough power on it. To keep getting out in the same series in the same manner, for a captain of the Indian team, that’s not a good sign.”
