Mumbai, June 3 On their 49th marriage anniversary on Friday, megastar Amitabh Bachchan shared a glimpse of his wedding with actress-politician Jaya Bachchan on social media and thanked everyone for showering the couple with love.

Won’t be able to reply to all Please accept my gratitude here).”

The couple’s romance began on the sets of ‘Guddi’. The two have worked together in several successful films such as ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Silsila’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Mili’, ‘Sholay’, and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’.

Nothing wrong with Virat’s technique, sometimes you also need a bit of luck: Azhar

0

Dubai, June 3 Former India captain and stylish batter Mohammad Azharuddin believes that Virat Kohli’s “staggering consistency” when he was at his peak some two years back has set the benchmark so high that even if the charismatic cricketer scores in the 50s or 60s, his fans feel he has underperformed.

“With Virat Kohli, what happens is that even if he scores a 50, people say he has failed,” Azhar was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times on Friday. “I think it happens to every cricketer, even the best of the players have gone through these lean periods,” opined the 59-year-old.

However, Azhar felt it’s a matter of time before Kohli rediscovers his form, adding that just one century for the cricketer will get him firing again. Kohli has endured a long lean path, having not scored a century since November 2019 in any of the three formats.

He then endured a poor IPL 2022 season, scoring 341 runs from 16 matches at 22.73, even though he is the highest-ever run-getter in a single IPL season when he scored 973 in 2016 for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“There is nothing wrong with his technique. Sometimes you also need a little bit of luck. If he gets one big score, a big hundred, the aggression and the confidence will come back,” added Azhar.

Azhar also hoped that all-rounder Hardik Pandya, after leading Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title recently as captain, needs to show consistency for long periods.

“He has the ability, he has done well for the Indian team, but because of the injuries, he was not in the team consistently. He has come back now, he is bowling his four overs. How long he will bowl we really don’t know. But we definitely want him to bowl since he is an all-rounder,” he said.

“In the IPL final (against Rajasthan Royals), he completely changed the game, three wickets in four overs, then he scored 34 quick runs. He is a good talent, just needs that consistency.”

District-level cricket is where it all begins and budding players need to focus on that: Dhoni

0

Chennai, June 3 Former India captain and IPL side Chennai Super Kings stalwart Mahendra Singh Dhoni has stressed that district cricket is the most important thing for budding cricketers, which opens the door for them to play state-level cricket and then pitchforks them into the national limelight, adding that no player can reach the top level without going through this process.

“Initially when I started playing cricket, they want, or the will to score in that tournament. Why? Because you could represent your district. Why do you want to represent your district? So that when you play an inter-district tournament and you do well, and you are called for the selection trials for the state,” said the skipper of one of the most successful IPL teams, which has bagged four titles –one less than Mumbai Indians.

“And, I feel that is the urge that all you (young) cricketers need to have. And, what is very important is to be proud of the district that you represent, because when we start playing cricket, you want to play for school and do well for the school. But ultimately, you want to get selected for the district team. From the district, you want to do well and get selected for the state. Then, you want to compete at the Ranji Trophy level and ultimately, you want to represent India,” said the stalwart while attending the 25-year celebration of the Thiruvallur Cricket Association.

“We are celebrating the success of a district cricket association. So, a lot of that I will speak about is also to thank my district cricket association back home. When we talk about the grassroots level of cricket, what you really need is cricket from where it starts, and where it is governed.

“And, I always felt for me grassroots cricket was school-level cricket because it is a place where you want students to play all the different sports, but at the same time the responsibility comes to the district cricket association to organize a cricket tournament where all the schools of the district, they make sure that it is prestigious enough to compete,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni felt that with more number of cricketers competing for a place in the district team, there will be more competition, which, in turn, will lead to better players moving up in their pursuit of national team berths.

“The more the number of cricketers who are competing to get selected for the district team, the more the competition, the better the chances of the cricketers getting better ultimately helping not only the district but the state cricket association in turn. So today, I would like to thank my Ranchi District Cricket Association for organizing all the different categories of school-level cricket that were organized at that point in time, and more often than not, more of the states follow the same blueprints. So, for us, it was Class 10, and Class 12 more like U-16 and U-19 tournaments.

“I am proud of the fact that I got a chance to represent my country, but it would not have started if I have not played for my district if I have not played for my school. So, that feeling of being proud of being a part of the district is very important. Because, if it does not start at that level, we will not really represent the country.

“: So, I feel always the responsibility of the district cricket association is huge because year after year, what is one of the most difficult things to achieve is to try and make sure that the schools are motivated enough to make a team. And then to compete and make that tournament prestigious enough for everyone to compete and do well,” added Dhoni.

Please revisit ‘Kaithi’ before watching ‘Vikram’: Director Lokesh Kanagaraj

0

Hyderabad, June 3 In an open note that he shared, ‘Vikram’ director Lokesh Kanagaraj wrote that it was a surreal experience for him to direct someone like Kamal Haasan.

Lokesh added that he is emotional and said that ‘Vikram’ is a gift to Kamal Haasan, from a fanboy.

On Thursday, a few hours prior to the movie’s theatrical release, Lokesh shared a note via his social media handles.

“This is the most emotional I’ve ever felt before the release of my film. As I can remember, ever since I was a kid, I loved Ulayanayagan the most. This is a surreal experience for me, that I am directing a film in his honor,” Lokesh’s note reads.

According to Lokesh, “It has been 18 months since I started working on ‘Vikram’. As a team, we have shed blood and sweat (quite literally) for this film”.

Hinting that ‘Vikram’ has some sort of connection with his previous movie ‘Kaithi’, Lokesh teased, “And, please do revisit Kaithi before entering into the world of Vikram”.

Russia trying to break Ukraine’s defence in the eastern region from all directions

0

The situation in Ukraine’s eastern Luhansk region “remains difficult because the Russian army is trying to break through our defence line from all directions”, regional head Serhiy Haidai has said, media reports said.

Haidai told a Ukraine TV channel on Thursday morning that the main goal of the Russians was the city of Severodonetsk, BBC reported.

“But they had no success there overnight. They are controlling most of the city but not the whole of the city,” as they claimed earlier, added Haidai.

“Fighting continues, and yesterday our boys carried out counter-attacks, pushing back the enemy on some streets and taking several prisoners,” he said.

Haidai also said that Russian troops – who are also trying to push on to Severodonetsk’s twin city of Lysychansk – are suffering heavy losses to personnel and armoury, but are bringing reinforcements from other battlefields, BBC reported.

He described the territory still under Ukrainian control believed to be about 5 per cent of the Luhansk region – as a “fortress”.

Severodonetsk and Lysychansk – the twin cities on either side of the Siverskyi Donets river – are the easternmost cities still in Ukrainian hands.

Lysychansk is on the right bank of the river, which served as a natural barrier so far, halting the Russian advance.

Russia already controls most of Severodanetsk, where fierce street fighting has been raging for days. Ukrainian officials have not ruled out withdrawing from the city to the more strategically positioned Lysychansk, BBC reported.

If Russian forces seize the two cities, they would then control all of the eastern Luhansk regions.

After a series of military defeats in the first few weeks of the war around the Ukrainian capital Kiev and in the northeast, Russia declared it would focus on capturing Luhansk and the neighbouring Donetsk region – collectively known as Donbas.

Ashwin bats for more conversation on racism, Rahane recalls Siraj incident at SCG

0

New Delhi, June 2 Premier Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has endorsed the idea of having more conversations on racism whether it’s in the sports field or in the world in general, and also feels that better parenting and awareness about the subject can bring the change.

There have been several instances in the past where cricket, which is called a gentleman’s game, has been rocked by racist slurs and comments that have brought the sport to disrepute. Many have been punished for their offenses as well but it keeps taking place from time to time.

“I think we should all have the conversation as a world, it’s not just cricket or any other sports. I don’t think it has anything to do with a particular section of people in any particular country. Everywhere people do believe that they belong to a majority sort of a thing and they want to have a go at somebody else. And I think racism is one of the parts of it where they believe that is a way of differentiation with someone,” said Ashwin on the sidelines of the trailer launch event of ‘Bandon Mein Tha Dum’, a documentary on that Test series that India won 2-1 in dramatic circumstances in Australia in 2020-21.

Ashwin also suggested a few things which can lead to the improvement in the present conditions.

“I think the only solution on this is better parenting and better awareness, just by talking about it at the stage or on an event like this, we wouldn’t necessarily make a difference but with awareness and talking about it on a regular basis and better parenting from the childhood we can make a difference,” he said.

Notably, Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were racially abused by spectators during that famous Sydney Test in their 2021-22 Australia tour. The veteran spinner feels Siraj showed courage in making people aware of what was going on.

“I think it’s not about a certain country or certain ground. Yes, it’s happened at a certain ground (SCG) and that place (Australia) a lot more. But, it was courageous of him (Siraj) to bring it up so at least a wider section of the people know and probably the people sitting next to such people in that ground do a lot better from the next time,” he said.

“So it (racism) is something that one must condemn but I want to bring to your notice that everywhere people are differentiating people on different grounds, which is definitely not fair,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane, India’s captain then in the absence of Virat Kohli, also recalled the Siraj incident and his talk with the umpires to take action against the culprits.

After the end of the third day’s play in that New Year’s Day Test, the Indian players spoke to the match officials about the abuse that had been hurled at them, and when it continued the next morning, they alerted the umpires.

Rahane revealed that the umpires – Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson – had asked the players to go back to the dressing room if they didn’t want to play, but India insisted on getting the spectators ejected and carrying on with the Test.

The play was suspended for ten minutes, and a group of people was evicted from the stands before the game could continue.

“We insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground. When Siraj again came to me (on the fourth day, after being abused the day before), I told the umpires that (they) need to take action and we won’t play till then,” said Rahane.

“The umpires said that you can’t stall the game and can walk out if you want. We said that we are here to play and not sit in the dressing room and insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground. It was important to support our colleague given the situation he had been through. What happened in Sydney was completely wrong,” he added.

India’s real GDP growth for FY23 seen at 7.5%, says SBI Research

0

New Delhi, June 2 India’s real gross domestic product (GDP) in FY23 is expected to be at 7.5 percent, said SBI Research in a report.

“Given the high inflation and the subsequent upcoming rate hikes, we believe that real GDP will incrementally increase by Rs 11.1 lakh crore in FY23,” the report said.

For FY23 also, as inflation remains elevated in the first half, the report said the projection is that nominal GDP will grow by 16.1 percent.

The report mentioned some of the factors that will impact the GDP growth for FY23.In FY22, around 2000 Corporates in listed space reported 29 percent growth in top line and 52 percent growth in profit after tax, besides sector-wise data for April Indicated that credit off-take had happened in almost all sectors.

“Personal loans segment continued to perform well, registering acceleration in growth to 14.7 percent in April 2022 and contributed around 90 percent of the incremental credit during the month, primarily driven by ‘Housing’, ‘Vehicle Loans’ and ‘Other Personal Loans’ segments. Customers, especially in retail verticals could be having a feel of future run expected in interest rates, and might be front-loading their purchases in days to come, giving a fillip to consumer demands in select niche areas.”

Further, SBI Research said it expects the central bank RBI to be supportive of growth and hike repo rates gradually, but mostly front load it in June and August policy review meetings.

It expects a 50 basis point repo rate hike and a 25 basis point cash reserve ratio rate hike in the forthcoming June policy meet. RBI is likely to raise the repo rate cumulatively by 125-150 basis points over the pandemic level of 4 percent. RBI might also increase the cash reserve ratio rate cumulatively by another 50 basis points, after raising it by 50 basis points in the last monetary policy meet.

Lastly, the report said it was keenly watching the uncertainties regarding the crude oil prices. “At $120 per barrel, it still poses significant uncertainties regarding inflation trajectory. We, however, now believe that inflation will average 6.5-6.7 percent in FY23 on the back of excise rate cuts by the government. Independent forecasts reveal that oil prices could climb further before declining, but it might still hold up at current levels for a longer period of time.”

Shattering to think Andrew Symonds is not with us anymore: Shane Watson

0

Brisbane, June 2 Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson paid a glowing tribute to Andrew Symonds, declaring the late all-rounder the greatest teammate he ever had. Symonds left the cricketing world in mourning after dying at the age of 46 in a car crash in Townsville, Queensland on May 14.

“You felt bulletproof when you played in the same team as Andrew Symonds. Having him at the point and just knowing he always had your back no matter what. And to bat with him was something very special. It is shattering to think he is not with us anymore.”

“I look back at old footage I have seen over the last couple of weeks and (shaking head) he was so good, just so incredibly good. And to go with it one of the best teammates you could ever have,” said Watson to former England pacer Isa Guha on ICC Review Show.

Watson further claimed that there weren’t many players born with the same ability as Symonds and even compared him to West Indies batting great Sir Vivian Richards.

“He was very much Viv Richards reincarnated in the way he played. Even before I played against him you always heard about this big, powerful, six-hitting batter who could do everything and who was an amazing athlete.”

“His ability to bowl spin and medium pace, he was one of the best fielders to ever play. His all-around ability was something we haven’t seen much of and won’t see much of again.”

Symonds’ untimely demise comes after the deaths of leg-spin legend Shane Warne and wicketkeeper Rod Marsh in a span of fewer than 24 hours in March. Watson felt the cricketing community will have to be around Symonds’ family, especially his kids Chloe and Billy.

“His poor two kids, such beautiful kids and they adored their dad as well. We need to make sure we rally around his family as much as we can, as I know he would do that for us.”

Isa agreed with the same. “Just thinking of his friends and his family and his beautiful kids as well I am sure everyone will be there to support. Not just the Australian cricketing community, but also the wider community around the world.”

She also paid a tribute to Symonds, recalling the time spent working with the all-rounder as a commentator recently during the cricketing summer in Australia. “We have lost two unbelievable people from cricket, alongside Rod Marsh not long before that, and I still can’t quite believe what is going on, it doesn’t feel real.”

“He (Symonds) was actually a shoulder to cry on in the aftermath of the Shane Warne (news) as we were working together in broadcast and we were just trying to keep each others’ spirits up. It just doesn’t feel real and is hard to comprehend really what has happened.”

A team that wasn’t given a chance to be contenders and were labelled weak after the mega auction ran all the way to the trophy after defeating Rajasthan Royals in the title clash on May 29 in front of 1,04,859 fans at Narendra Modi Stadium, co-incidentally their home ground.

Now, their pace spearhead Mohammed Shami spilled the beans on what worked for Gujarat in winning IPL 2022. In a video posted by the franchise on their social media accounts, Shami revealed that different players stepping up to do the job for the side in various matches played a part in their triumphant campaign.

In Gujarat’s wins, Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Shubman Gill, skipper Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Rashid Khan, Rahul Tewatia, and Wriddhiman Saha bagged Player of the Match awards, with Gill, Miller and Pandya winning the award twice in the season.

“The best thing which was to see, which was behind Gujarat’s success like, for every team, their senior player or some other players perform. But when we see our team, in every match (for Gujarat Titans), a new face stepped up, a new performance came up, which was enjoyed a lot by the people and results of which you are seeing right now,” said Shami.

Shami, who began the season with the first-ball dismissal of Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul in Test match style, bagged 11 wickets in power-play at an economy rate of 6.62, the joint-most scalps taken by a bowler in the tournament alongside Chennai Super Kings’ left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary. He credited the great atmosphere off the field for bringing the best out of the side in IPL 2022.

“It has been a great season, especially for all of us. According to me, the bonding we had as a family and unit that we formed right from day one has been managed really well. The (team) management played their role really well and no one felt any pressure; the results of the same were seen in the matches,” added Shami.

Shami’s next assignment after winning the IPL 2022 trophy with Gujarat will be India’s postponed fifth Test against England at Edgbaston from July 1-5. “Once the season is over, the only target for everyone is to whatever we can for the country and it’s an amazing feeling,” concluded the right-arm pacer.
