Qatar puts release of ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ on hold

0

Mumbai, June 2 After Kuwait and Oman banned the release of ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, Qatar now has put a hold on the Akshay Kumar-starrer.

‘Samrat Prithviraj’ is based on the life and valor of the fearless and mighty King Prithviraj Chauhan. Akshay is essaying the role of the legendary warrior who fought valiantly to protect India from the merciless invader Muhammad of Ghor in this visual spectacle.

A source working in overseas territories, on conditions of anonymity, says: “The issue is unnecessarily getting colored with a religious lens in these countries. People should view a film that’s based on history and is authentic from a neutral perspective.

“The fact is that India was looted by invaders who happened to be Muslims. The fact is that Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan fought one such invader and tried to protect India till his last breath. One should view history for what it is.”

The source adds: “After a ban in Kuwait and Oman, now another Islamic country, Qatar, has put the film’s release on hold. Indians living in these countries won’t be able to see the film and that’s really unfortunate. A film like this comes once in a lifetime for everyone to see and enjoy and celebrate one’s history.”

“People are trying to deny Indians of this moment. Better sense should prevail.”

‘Samrat Prithviraj’ has been directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi. Manushi Chhillar plays the role of King Prithviraj’s beloved Sanyogita.

The film is set to release this Friday in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

‘Major’ is not an agenda-driven movie: Director Sashi Kiran Tikka

0

Hyderabad, June 2 The film Major,’ which stars Adivi Sesh and tells the story of 26/11 martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, will be released on June 3. Director Sashi Kiran Tikka explained that ‘Major’ is a story told from the perspective of Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s parents and that the film has no agenda and is made for the audience to savor the emotions alone.

“‘Major’ isn’t some random agenda-driven movie,” Sashi Kiran Tikka said. “It’s a natural story that allows the audience to soak in the emotions. While listening to the script, some of the actors and teammates began to cry.”

“Prakash Raj and Revathi both broke down in tears. At times, I too became emotional. The performance of Revathi ma’am will make you cry,” he conveyed.

“During the attacks, 15 police officers and two NSG commandos were killed, including Sandeep Unnikrishnan. I hope that one day, their stories will be told in the same way that Sandeep’s has been told.”

The director claims that the screening of ‘Major’ for Sandeep’s parents was a moving experience, as they were contacted by the team for the simplest of the details related to the martyr. “They’d describe how their son used to react in a particular situation. Taking their feedback was like a litmus test for us. The story is the parents’ point of view,” said Sashi Kiran Tikka.

The director talked about small-big cinematic liberties, he tried to take advantage of, for ‘Major’.

“The majority of ‘Major’ was shot on location. Simultaneously, we had to be as genuine as possible. To be sure, some cinematic liberties were taken.

“The action sequences were created with the goal of being as commercial as possible. If the reactions of the audiences at the premieres are any indication, the decision was well worth it.

“‘Major’ has been seen by Mahesh Babu sir (one of the producers). After watching the show, he was speechless for five minutes. We were unsure whether he enjoyed the film or not! He later came up to us, hugged me, and expressed his happiness as he showered appreciation,” said Sashi Kiran Tikka.

Siraj hoping for a strong comeback in the Test in England, working on fitness, consistency

0

Mumbai, June 2 Picked in India’s Test squad for the fifth rescheduled Test against England to be played in Birmingham from July 1-5, pacer Mohd Siraj feels he will have to work hard in the next few weeks on his form and fitness to bowl consistently long spells in the five-day game.

Siraj has had an indifferent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season for Royal Challengers Bangalore and is looking to make a strong comeback with the red ball. With the T20 World Cup scheduled in Australia later this year, Siraj will be hoping to do well enough in England to get a chance in white-ball cricket too.

“This season the IPL was a bit down. The last two seasons my graph was up and this time it has come down. But then I see what I have done in the past two years and take that along. This year was a bad phase for me but I will make a strong comeback by working hard. I will work on my ability, and believe in my strengths,” Siraj told the media on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Wednesday evening.

The Indian pacer was the star performer for India in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020/21 against Australia with a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the fourth and final Test. India won the series 2-1 and the series will now feature in an upcoming documentary web series ‘Bandon Mein the Dum’.

Siraj said he is looking forward to bowling with the Duke’s ball in the fifth and last match of the Pataudi Trophy 2021/22 series, which was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the camp.

The Hyderabad pacer says the fifth and final game of the series that India is leading 2-1 will be very important keeping in mind the World Test Championship scenario.

“My preparations are going well for the Test. There in England, the Duke’s ball is used, it is always good to bowl there in the English conditions and it is helpful for the bowlers. This test is very important for us and we are leading 2-1. It is good that the Test has been rescheduled and we are confident (of doing well) as we have the lead, it is a good feeling,” he added.

He said he will be preparing for the series near his home in Hyderabad.

“I will be training on the ground near my house and working on my fitness. Moving from T20 to Test is a big change and to bowl those long spells in Test cricket, I need to work on my consistency and depend on my strength,” said Siraj.

Visually impaired Delhi woman raped by a man who helped her cross road

0

New Delhi, June 2 A visually impaired woman was raped in the national capital’s Dwarka district following which the police have arrested one person, an official said on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Shankar Choudhary said information regarding rape with a blind woman was received from Deen Dayal Hospital at the Dabri police station area and the same was marked to the Investigative Officer for necessary action.

The incident took place on May 25 when the said woman alighted at a bus stop on the other side of the road. It was at this juncture, that the accused on the pretext of helping her cross the road, took her to another abandoned street and raped her.

The investigative officer met the victim and accordingly, a case under section 376 (punishment for rape) was registered at the Dabri police station of Dwarka district, and a probe was initiated.

With the help of technical evidence, the accused was found, apprehended, and arrested. Later he was sent to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwal also met the victim girl and assured her all help. Anguished over the incident she questioned, “Is there any limit to human cruelty or not?”

According to the data compiled by the Delhi Police, during the year 2021, as many as 1,969 women were raped in the national capital, 21.69 percent more than the previous year. In 2020, the figure stood at 1618.

Not just rape, every figure of crime against women has an upward variation. The molestation of women rose by 17.51 percent and eve-teasing by 17.51 percent. However, the Delhi Police termed the rise in figures of crime as “due to a conscious policy of Fair and Truthful Registration”.

But even as stringent laws are in place coupled with the proactive approach of the Delhi Police and a high solving rate of rape cases (95.48 percent), molestation of women cases (90.98 percent), and an insult to modesty of women (85.75 percent), the crime against women still ain’t declining.

South Korea “respects” India’s decision to ban wheat exports — Ambassador

0

New Delhi, June 2: The recently inked Indo Pacific Economic Framework is expected to give a boost to the global economy and ease the supply chain network, South Korea’s ambassador to India Chang Jae-bok said on Wednesday. He also came out in support of India’s decision to ban wheat exports amid rising food inflation and concerns over food security.

“In principle, I respect the decision of the government of India because this is related to the stability of the domestic market of India,” Chang said.

He however said that India’s decision will impact global market prices. “We are closely watching the approximation of the market in terms of wheat, sugar, and other items,” he added.

India and South Korea have also pressed the pedal on economic and trade cooperation in the post-Covid phase. Despite stringent Covid 19 restrictions in 2021, bilateral trade between India and South Korea went up 40 percent over the previous year touching $23.7 billion — the highest ever. In 2020, it was $16.9 billion.

“The target is to touch $50 billion by 2030,” Chang Jae-bok, South Korea’s Ambassador said at the five-day Korean Fair in New Delhi.

The two countries have also agreed to revise and upgrade the existing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries.

The up-gradation of the agreement will help in touching the $50 billion trade target.

The Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra) is looking to hold such fairs across India to promote Korean products and culture. These fairs besides showcasing the entire gamut of Korean products, food, and culture, also provide a platform for the South Korean companies to come together. Several new products have been introduced to the Indian market for the first time through this fair.

There are about 750 Korean companies operating in India. But the number is significantly lower compared to other Asian countries such as Vietnam, which has about 7000. “We expect more Korean SMEs (small and medium enterprises) to come into India,” Chang said, adding that both countries already have a strong economic partnership, which is further expanding.

South Korean culture, music, food, and even language are gaining popularity like never before in India. Just before leaving India, former South Korean ambassador to India Shin Bongkil said that the Covid-19 pandemic showcased India as the next investment destination.

However, observers said that India must further work towards improving ease of living, something that will help in attracting more foreign investors.

Puducherry electricity employees are on hunger strike from June 8 against privatization

0

Puducherry, June 2 Engineers and employees of the Puducherry electricity department will intensify their fight against the privatization of the power department with a hunger strike from June 8 onwards.

The protesting employees said that the strike will not affect the functioning of the department as it would be carried out on a rotation basis.

In a statement, P. Velmurugan of the employees association said that an uninterrupted power supply will be ensured in the Union Territory and that people will in no way be affected by the strike.

Notably, the employees had conducted a pen-down strike a week before demanding that the central and state governments refrain from privatization.

Velmurugan said that even after Chief Minister N. Rangasamy’s assurance that privatization will not take place without the employee’s and general public’s consent, the process is in on.

He said that they have met the Superintendent Engineer, who also heads the department, regarding it and informed him of the impending hunger strike.

The employees have informed the territorial government that their status as the government employees is retained and that their service conditions are not affected.

The opposition Secular Progressive Democratic Alliance (SDPA) has conducted protests against the privatization of the power department. The alliance led by Congress even held a human chain protest against the move in which former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader V. Narayanaswamy, leader of opposition and DMK leader R. Siva, CPI- M state secretary R. Rajangam, and CPI state secretary A.M. Saleem participated.

The leaders said that a chain of protests will be conducted in the union territory against the government’s move. They said that the privatization would lead to a five-fold increase in electricity bills, an increase in charges for new connections, and the scrapping of 100 units of free power to those below the poverty line and farmers.

Moeen Ali is ready to return to Test cricket if new coach McCullum needs him

0

London, June 2 England all-rounder Moeen Ali has said that the ‘door is open’ for his return to Test cricket under Brendon McCullum, as he looks set to make a U-turn on the retirement from Test announced last summer.

Moeen, 34, who quit Test cricket last year after claiming 195 wickets in 64 matches and scoring 2914 runs at 28.29, with five centuries, revealed his mind while speaking to the media after being awarded an OBE for services to cricket in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Moeen, who is a key member of England’s white-ball set-up and was part of the victorious 2019 World Cup squad, said McCullum had sounded him out about a potential red-ball return after taking over as England’s new coach a few days back,

“Baz (McCullum) messaged me asking if I was ‘in’,” Moeen was quoted as saying by the Guardian newspaper. “I have played with him in the Indian Premier League and really enjoyed the way he works.

“We spoke and he mentioned potentially, in the future, if there is a tour, or whenever really, would I be available? I said ‘call me at the time’. We’ll see. The door is open,” added the Worcestershire player.

England have reset the team establishment after the Ashes debacle earlier in the year and will start a new era captain Ben Stokes and McCullum with a series against New Zealand.

Moeen said he was looking forward to see what happens with England under the new leadership.

“And even though it’s sad Chris Silverwood went as head coach and (Joe) Root stepped down as captain, it’s always exciting when there is a new chapter.”
