Siddharth Suryanarayan on being part of ‘Escaype Live’: It’s a mirror to our society

0

Mumbai, May 26 ‘Rang De Basanti’ fame Siddharth Suryanarayan is confident that his web series ‘Escaype Live’ is surely relatable.

The actor, who plays the central character in the Siddharth Kumar Tewary series, says that the storyline reflects exactly what goes on in society today.

“I believe ‘Escaype Live’ is a mirror to society. Siddharth Kumar Tewary believes that we are in India 2.0. And the show is a good depiction of the cross-section of Indian society in 2022. The show, not just shows people from very different varied social-cultural backgrounds and from all over our diverse country, but it also shows how all these people respond to technology, the benefits and the dangers of social media. So, I believe that, yes, it’s definitely a mirror to the society that we live in today,” he says.

It might seem that social media has made it very easy to get fame and even earn money. but content creators also struggle, says Siddharth. “I think it’s unfair to say that any kind of money-making is easy. It’s not easy to make money. If anybody believes that it’s easy to make money then they must know that this money will definitely come with its own consequences.”

“Social media is a new avenue. When we were in school and during our growing up years, when we were looking at employment opportunities, we had other things in mind. We wanted to work so that we could buy a house and we wanted job security. We wanted a job so that our family would be secure.”

“But now the criteria for selecting work has changed and I believe social media gives people an opportunity to start monetizing their talent very early. And like in any industry, there will be those who start really fast and then slow down later, and there’ll be those who start slowly and succeed in the long run, the same is true here as well,” he adds.

He continues that social media has lots of opportunities.

“Also, I believe any content is content. So, I think you shouldn’t look down on any content, Some people will say that this is pop, which is popular culture. And so, it’s less than, let’s say, something that’s more intelligent or arty. But it takes a lot for creators to create content and I respect all creators of content.

“I am glad that social media gives them the opportunity to be seen. And that the struggle now is still very much there but it’s a different kind of struggle. It’s about maintaining your startup as opposed to getting it to the first place,” he says.

However, the actor adds that one must draw our own limits. “I think what you post is an individual choice. Social media is the kind of space that I believe is too vast. It’s like an ocean. So, it’s difficult to say that if you are in it you must swim like this.”

“I think each individual must learn how to swim on their own, and if there are sharks around you, you should try to go back to the shore. Social media can be scary as well. The thing is that social media is like any addiction or any exposure to an addictive situation.

“It’s very difficult to leave it when you’re at the top. And for me, I’ve been lucky because we’ve been able to exercise control not just on social media but in life as well. I only do what I want to,” he concludes.

Ajith’s ‘Valimai’ is set for world TV premiere on May 28

0

Mumbai, May 24 Producer Boney Kapoor, and actress Huma Qureshi share their experience of working on the Tamil action thriller ‘Valimai’. The movie will have its world television premiere on May 28.

Speaking about ‘Valimai,’ producer of the film, Boney says: “Cinema in India has a sole purpose to entertain the families around and present a good time. With ‘Valimai’ I wanted to create something that entertains and at the same time thrills the audience.”

On sharing her experience of preparing for her role: “Learning to ride a bike to don the ‘never get bogged down’ attitude, this film made me feel empowered and fierce; I would like everyone to feel that way when they watch this film,” she adds.

Breakthrough Covid more likely in cancer, Alzheimer’s patients

0

New York, May 24 Breakthrough Covid-19 cases resulting in infections, hospitalizations, and deaths are significantly more likely in cancer and Alzheimer’s patients, according to two new studies.

“breakthrough infection” is when a fully vaccinated person contracts Covid. Researchers at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine said that people with cancer and Alzheimer’s are often more susceptible to infection in general, and are also among the population’s most vulnerable to severe health outcomes from Covid infections as well.

The first study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Oncology, analyzed electronic health records of more than 636,000 vaccinated patients, including more than 45,000 vaccinated people with cancer.

The team found the overall risk of breakthrough Covid infections in vaccinated people with cancer was 13.6 percent, compared to 4.9 percent for vaccinated people without cancer.

The highest risk of breakthrough infections was in people with pancreatic cancer at 24.7 percent, followed by liver cancer (22.8 percent), lung cancer (20.4 percent), and colorectal cancer (17.5 percent).

Cancers with a lower risk of breakthrough infections included thyroid (10.3 percent), endometrial (11.9 percent), and breast (11.9 percent).

The overall risk for hospitalization following a breakthrough infection, in participants with cancer, was 31.6 percent, while the risk of death was 6.7 percent following a breakthrough infection.

“This study showed significantly increased risks for Covid-19 breakthrough infection in vaccinated patients with cancer, especially those undergoing active cancer care, with marked variations among specific cancer types,” said Rong Xu, Professor of biomedical informatics at the varsity’s School of Medicine.

In the second study, published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, the team examined anonymous electronic health data from more than 262,847 adults 65 or older vaccinated between December 2020 and August 2021, and who didn’t have the infection before being vaccinated.

Vaccinated patients with dementia showed an overall risk for breakthrough infections ranging from 10.3 percent for Alzheimer’s disease to 14.3 percent for Lewy body dementia, significantly higher than the 5.6 percent in the vaccinated older adults without dementia.

“Continued vigilance is needed, even after vaccination, to protect this vulnerable population. Caregivers should consider ongoing masking and social distancing, as well as booster vaccines to protect these individuals,” said Pamela Davis, Professor at the School of Medicine.

Snapchat slows down hiring, to only hire 500 more people this year

0

San Francisco, May 24 Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, is slowing down on hiring this year, as tech companies’ stocks go through rough weather amid a challenging macro-economic environment globally.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel told employees that the company plans to hire 500 people this year, versus the 2,000 it hired over the past 12 months, after warning investors that its revenue wouldn’t grow as fast as expected, reports The Verge.

“We expect to hire more than 500 new team members between now and the end of the year, representing nearly 10 percent company-wide headcount growth over the next seven months,” Spiegel was quoted as saying.

“This is in addition to over 900 offers already accepted this year, up 41 percent year-over-year, and the roughly 2,000 people added to our team in the trailing 12 months,” he added.

Like many companies, Snap continues to face rising inflation and interest rates, supply chain shortages and labor disruptions, platform policy changes, the impact of the war in Ukraine, and more.

“As a result, while our revenue continues to grow year-over-year, it is growing more slowly than we expected at this time,” said the Snap CEO.

“We will slow our pace of hiring for unopened roles for the remainder of the year, as well as push some planned hiring into next year.”

The company will also evaluate the remainder of its 2022 budget and leaders have been asked to review spending to find additional cost savings.

The Big Tech companies have seen big selloffs in the past couple of weeks after the Federal Reserve interest hike and Covid lockdowns in China.
