Chessable Masters: Praggnanandhaa loses final in a tiebreak after superb fightback

0

Chennai, May 27 The Indian boy wonder Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa launched an incredible fightback to win the second phase of his two-round final against Ding Liren of China and force a tiebreak in the Chessable Masters, the fourth leg of the nine-round USD 1.6 million Champions Chess Tour.

But his resistance ended at around 2.30 am on Thursday night as the Indian blundered to lose the second play-off blitz game, losing the match by 2.5-1.5, 0.5-1.5 margin in the tiebreak playoffs — an incredible performance for a 16-year-old school kid who had defeated some top players including World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in this event.

Pragg, as he is known fondly in the chess circuit, found some brilliant tactical moves to leave the experts shaking their heads in wonder as he came back strongly in the rapid section, the short version of chess that could be compared with a one-day match (the classical version is like Test match and the blitz is equivalent to the T20).

Pragg, who had appeared for his school exam before the first round of the final after playing the semifinal encounter till late in the night, won the second game in the four-game mini-match after the first ended in a draw.

He then held on to the advantage to force a blitz playoff. He drew the first game of play-offs before blundering to lose the second.

By finishing runner-up, Pragg had to be content with USD15,000 in prize money and USD6,250 in bonuses, a memorable run in which he finished above world champion Magnus Carlsen, who he beat in the preliminary stage.

Ding claimed the USD25,000 first prize, USD6,250 in bonuses, and the pride of winning his first Meltwater Champions Chess Tour title, the fourth leg of the 2022 season.

It all started with the Chinese player having the advantage after winning the first round of the final and needing only to draw the second. But Praggnanandhaa had other ideas.

Game 1 started with the Semi-Tarrasch Opening and both players were in the well-known territory before Ding, playing with white pieces, found some pressure with a pin on the d-file.

The key moment was Pragg’s move with his King (24… Kh7) to relieve tension in the position before the first encounter ended in a 41-move draw.

The second rapid game started as a repeat of the first with a Semi-Tarrasch before Ding deviated by capturing a pawn (5… cxd4). The game came to life with a queen exchange that set off a quick tactical sequence.

By taking a pawn with his rook (31. Rxd5), Ding offered up a clever-looking pawn sacrifice to activate his pieces which Pragg accepted. The engine agreed with Pragg but the youngster quickly found trouble getting his pieces coordinated.

Ding let his position slip, however, with two trades and let Pragg stay a pawn up and got his king active.

The teenager is something of an endgame master and wasn’t going to let this chance slip. Pragg forced through to win the game and was back in the match with a chance of forcing a play-off.

For the first time, Ding was under pressure and needed a win. The third game was intense. Pragg was on the back foot for most of it but stayed cool and went for a risky exchange sacrifice that bagged him three pieces for his queen.

For a brief moment, Pragg had a glimmer of hope. Ding decided to push his passed pawns but missed a crucial knight move (44… Nb4).

It didn’t prove enough of an advantage though as the pawns disappeared and a rare imbalance was left on the board with Ding’s king and queen against Pragg’s king, rook, knight, and bishop. Neither player could find a win and, after 106 moves, a draw was agreed.

In the final game of the mini-match, there was no way through again for Ding and it also ended in a draw. Pragg was level in the final and the tie was going to tiebreaks — two blitz games and then an Armageddon game if needed.

In the first game of the tiebreak, Pragg showed his prowess in the shorter form but was left bitterly disappointed. At a key point, Ding thought he’d found a tactic, but Pragg had seen further and conjured up the stunning take by his bishop (30.Bxe4) to go a pawn up.

It all went to waste though as Pragg, looking certain to take the lead, made the wrong choice and let Ding off the hook. The game was drawn. Ding got out of jail.

The second game was frenetic but one blunder from Pragg, the first of the final, ended it and he resigned.

It was still a brilliant performance by the Indian wizard, the youngest of the three in the fray in Chessable Masters, and one that enhances his reputation as a world-beater in the making.

KL Rahul didn’t do LSG any good by staying on till the 19th over, says Manjrekar

0

Kolkata, May 27 Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has criticized Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul for batting slowly in the IPL Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Eden Gardens, saying that there is no point in having “depth in the batting” when it is not utilized in an important game.

Chasing a mountain of runs, Rahul’s side was caught 14 runs short of the 207 set by RCB, built mainly on a smashing inning played by Rajat Patidar (112 not out in 54 balls). Opener KL Rahul stayed on till the end of the 19th over, scoring just 79 runs off 58 balls at a below-par strike rate of 136.20.

Manjrekar, speaking on Espncricinfo’s T20 Time: Out said, “The thing with KR Rahul’s team is that there is no point in having batting depth if one batter (KL Rahul) is inclined to bat the whole of the innings. And we saw that with Punjab Kings as well… I used to feel sorry for (Mumbai Indians’) Kieron Pollard, he used to come in and just get about 6 or 8 balls to play.”

Manjrekar added that Rahul should have sacrificed his wicket in the 12th or 13th over to have allowed hard-hitting players like Krunal Pandya, Marcus Stoinis, and West Indies’ Evin Lewis to take charge in the chase of 207.

“So you know all those batters down… the (Krunal) Pandyas, (Marcus) Stoinis’s and Evin Lewis; if KL Rahul would have got out say around 12th or 13th over, the same score they would have come into the game a little more and I’m sure they’ll win more matches like that. We don’t know whether that will happen but it seems like a more solid approach,” opined Manjrekar.

“So depth is needed; depth is good provided everybody out there goes out to get maximum from every ball. But if there is one batter who bats 19 overs in one inning… 19 overs of KL Rahul in that kind of gear was just going to make it difficult,” added Manjrekar.

Patidar’s ability to take pressure out of the equation key to his batting

0

Kolkata, May 27 Rajat Patidar’s blistering unbeaten century (112 off just 54 balls) might have caught the country by surprise, but not the soon-to-be 29-year-old, who had belief in his skills and knew he had the “ability” to excel on the big stage.

The Indore-born cricketer smashed 12 boundaries and seven maximums as his ton guided Royal Challengers Bangalore to a massive 207/4, which was the winning total as the Faf du Plessis-led side secured a place in Qualifier 2 at the expense of Lucknow Super Giants.

Patidar said that he takes the pressure out of the equation when he plays his game.

“When I time the ball, my focus is on it. The last over of the powerplay when Krunal (Pandya) was bowling to me, my execution went fine then and I got confident afterwards.

“I never feel any pressure as I think I have the ability to make up for the dots,” he explained.

RCB wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, known for his death-over hitting, too had lavished praise on Patidar, whose innings played a key role in his team winning by 14 runs against Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator.

With Bangalore four down at 115/4, Patidar shifted gears seamlessly to reach his maiden IPL hundred off 49 deliveries in the 18th over. He and Karthik, who remained unbeaten on 37 off 25 balls, smacked 84 runs in the last five overs in carrying Bangalore to 207/4 in 20 overs.

“It was probably the best innings by an uncapped player that I’ve seen. Outstanding batting. He is very cool, calm, and has a shy personality. It shows in his batting, you get the feeling that he is lazy but that is just his personality. Lovely guy, hardworking with a shy personality. Rajat Patidar played some great shots and made my job easier, that’s a key factor in a good team,” said Karthik on RCB’s Game Day segment video posted on the franchise’s social media accounts.

India women’s cricket team to tour Sri Lanka in June for white-ball series

0

Colombo, May 26 The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday confirmed that the India women’s team will tour the country in June for three ODIs and as many T20Is.

It also said that the ODIs will come under the newly-launched ICC Women’s Championship, which serves as a qualification pathway for the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Approving the India women’s tour of Sri Lanka is one of the seven decisions given the green signal by the SLC Executive Committee. While the Indian cricketers are participating in the ongoing Women’s T20 Challenge in Pune, Sri Lanka is currently touring Pakistan for three T20Is and as many ODIs, all to be played in Karachi.

The last time India toured the island nation was in 2018 when India won the ODI series 2-1 and the T20I series 4-0 after the second match finished with no result. If the trip happens despite Sri Lanka being under immense economic crisis, then it will be India’s first bilateral series after failing to reach the semifinals of ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 in New Zealand.

After the Sri Lanka series, India is scheduled to feature in the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham in July-August, grouped alongside Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan. This will be followed by playing England in three ODIs and as many T20Is from September 10 to 24.

Other notable decisions taken by the SLC Executive Committee include conducting an Under 19 Youth League of five teams comprising 13 players and two standbys, as part of its move towards building a core group of young players for the next Under 19 World Cup and beyond and organizing a Women’s T20 Invitational Tournament for six Division 1 Clubs and five Major Clubs in June 2022.

New Delhi, May 26 Meta (formerly Facebook) on Thursday announced new privacy controls for users, saying that it is rolling out a new setting to make it easier to manage who sees your posts on Facebook.

Now, when someone selects a default audience, that audience selection will apply to new posts created on Facebook that they share to their timeline unless they select a different audience for a particular post.

Previously, your default audience for posts matched whichever audience you chose most recently. So if you had just made a post that was available to the public, your subsequent posts would be as well

“This new setting will help make sure you’re sharing with the right people in your community,” said Michel Protti, Chief Privacy Officer, Product at Meta.

Meta recently consolidated the Ad Topics and Interest Categories controls into a single control that can be accessed on Facebook and Instagram, covering a more extensive set of ad topics.

“This allows people to use a single control to set preferences across ad topics that reflect the interest targeting categories advertisers may use to reach them and the content they might see in an ad,” Protti explained.

Meta said it has rewritten and re-designed the Privacy Policy to make it easier to understand and clearer about how the company uses your information.

“While the text looks different, Meta is not collecting, using, or sharing your data in new ways based on this policy update,” said Meta.

In addition, Meta is also updating its Terms of Service to better explain “what is expected from us and those who use our platforms”.

Meta will send notifications about the new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service to users and these updates go into effect on July 26.

Reform, perform, transform define today’s governance: PM Modi

0

Hyderabad, May 26 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the reform, perform, and transform mantra defines today’s governance in the country.

He said during the last eight years, the government with political willpower brought reforms and they yielded results on the ground due to people’s participation.

He said this while addressing the 20th-anniversary celebrations and graduation ceremony of the Post Graduate Programme of the Class of 2022 at the Indian School of Business (ISB) here.

Addressing students of both Hyderabad and Mohali campuses of the ISB, he said that while the need for reform was always felt in the country, there was always a lack of political willpower.

“Due to the continuous political instability in the last three decades, the country has seen a lack of political willpower for a long time. Because of this, the country stayed away from reforms and from taking big decisions. Since 2014, our country is seeing political will and also, and reforms are being done continuously. We have shown public support and popular support is assured when reforms are undertaken with determination and political will,” he said.

He cited the example of the adoption of digital payments among people. He said in a country where banking was considered a privilege, fintech has changed the life of the common man. He pointed out that today 40 percent of the world’s digital transactions are happening in India.

The Prime Minister noted that today, India is the fastest-growing economy in the group of G20 countries. In the case of smartphone data consumers, India is at number one. India is second in the world in terms of the number of Internet users. India is also second in the world on the Global Retail Index. The world’s third-largest start-up ecosystem is in India. The world’s third-largest consumer market is India.

He claimed that even amid the Covid pandemic, India proved its resilience. The century’s biggest health crisis disrupted the global supply chain and the war added to the problem.

“Despite all this India is emerging as a major center of growth today. Last year, the highest ever recorded FDI came into India. Today the world is realizing that India means business.”

Modi said it was not the success of the government alone but business schools like ISB, professionals who passed out from such institutes, and youth played a big role.

“Be it start-ups or traditional business, manufacturing or service sector, Indian youth proving they can lead the world. Today, the world is looking at India’s youth with confidence and respect,” he said.

The Prime Minister pointed out that Indian solutions are being implemented globally. “Today on this important day, I would like to ask you to link your personal goals with the goals of the country,” he told the business graduates.

Modi said that the resilience and strength of the health sector were proved during the pandemic. He recalled that there were no PPE manufacturers but the country produced 1,100 manufacturers and the Covid infrastructure in no time. There were only a couple of labs for testing but the number went up to 2,500.

“Regarding the Covid vaccines, concerns were being raised here whether foreign vaccines would be available or not. But India developed its own vaccines. In India, more than 190 crore doses have been administered. India has also sent vaccines to more than 100 countries of the world,” he said.

Referring to the expansion of medical education in the last eight years, he said the number of medical colleges increased from 380 to over 600 while the number of graduate and post-graduate medical seats went up from 90,000 to over 1.50 lakh.

The Prime Minister stated that bureaucracy has also made firm contributions to the reform process.

“System is the same but results are encouraging. People are coming forward to increase the pace of reforms. When people cooperate, quick and better results are assured. In the system now, the government brings reforms, bureaucracy performs and people’s participation leads to transformation,” he said and advised the ISB students to study this mechanism of reform, perform and transform as a case study and show it to the world.

He also cited the sports ecosystem transformation. He said after 2014 there has been phenomenal performance in every sport due to the confidence of athletes.

“Confidence comes when the right talent is discovered when there is handholding of talent when there is a transparent selection and a better infrastructure is available for training, competition. We can see transformation in sports due to reforms like Khelo India and Olympic Podium Scheme.”

He also cited the Aspirational District Programme as a great example of transformation. He said districts that were once branded as backward were performing better than the districts which were once considered progressive.

The Prime Minister said that the definition of business is changing and its landscape is widening. Formal, informal, small, and large businesses are expanding their horizons and giving employment to lakhs and crores of people.

He stressed the need to give more opportunities for growth to small businesses. He said students passing out of business schools can help them in connecting with the new local and global markets and with technology.

Earlier, Modi paid tributes to those who have contributed to taking the institute to its current glory. He recalled that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee dedicated this institution to the country in 2001.

Since then, about 50,000 executives have passed out from ISB. Today, ISB is among the top business schools in Asia.

Professionals passed out from ISB are helming top companies and giving momentum to the county’s business. Students from here have created many start-ups and played a role in creating several unicorns.

“This is an achievement of ISB and a cause of pride for the entire country,” he said.

IPL 2022: Two big hits in the middle overs could have got Lucknow over the line, says KL Rahul

0

Kolkata, May 26 Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul conceded that the result of the IPL 2022 Eliminator match against Royal Challengers Bangalore could have been in their favor if they had ‘”two big hits in the middle overs. Chasing 208, Lucknow had Rahul (79 off 58 balls) and Deepak Hooda (45 off 26 balls) partnering for a 96-run stand for the second wicket.

But Bangalore came back hard, on the back of excellent bowling in the backend from Josh Hazlewood and Harshal Patel, to win the match by 14 runs and set up a Qualifier 2 clash with Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad on Friday. Though Lucknow had 81/1 in their middle overs, many felt that the acceleration coming with the last seven overs in the match was too late.

“This season has been like every other season – good learning. As a team, it has been a challenging season, a good season. We learned a lot. Now looking back, yes, it is just about two big hits in the middle overs and that could have gotten us over the line,” said Rahul in the post-match virtual press conference.

“It’s not that we didn’t try to hit those fours or sixes, we were trying but I think in the middle they bowled really well. Harshal Patel’s two overs pushed us back a little. He gave away just seven or eight runs, he really changed his pace well. He bowled to the field and that pushed us back a little bit,” added Rahul.

Dropping three catches in four overs, of Dinesh Karthik on four, and of Rajat Patidar on 72 and 93 proved to be fatal for Lucknow as Bangalore smacked a whopping 84 runs off the last five overs, with Patidar racing to a sensational 49-ball century. Rahul admitted that the dropped chances by Lucknow in a match of fine margins came back to hit them hard.

“It is hard to pinpoint one thing. Skills-wise, you can have a bad day and can go wrong with your execution with bat and ball. Something that has let us down badly in this game is our fielding. We dropped some easy catches. I dropped DK (Dinesh Karthik) when he was batting, probably in single digits”

“(Rajat) Patidar was dropped when he was batting on 60 or 70. Dropping them cost us that extra 30-40 runs. We fought really hard and tried our best to chase down the target. But we were just two hits away and had we gotten those in the middle overs, probably we would have won this game.”

In IPL 2022, Rahul’s average while batting first was 85 while his average while batting second was just 27.28 (pushed after 79 in Eliminator). Rahul acknowledged that doing better in the second innings with the bat will be a point of improvement for Lucknow in the 2023 IPL.

“I did focus on my stats that this season I didn’t score many runs in the second innings. But this was a big game and when you come to a big game, you forget whatever you did in the last 14 games. You try to play this game as a fresh game and you try to give your best. I tried the same even today.”

“I didn’t score too many runs in the second innings this season but in other seasons I have really done well, and I enjoy chasing. Sometimes you are not as successful. But it’s a team game and the team has really stepped up even when we were chasing. We won a few games but generally overall in this season, we didn’t do well while chasing, so it’s something we need to learn.”

Rajat Patidar postponed his marriage to take part in IPL 2022 after surprise RCB call-up

0

Mumbai, May 26Rajat Patidar, who played a match-winning knock for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator of IPL 2022, is having one of the best times on the field but he was not initially supposed to play cricket in May and instead was set to get married during that time.

The 28-year-old went unsold in the IPL mega auction earlier in February and with no major cricketing events scheduled in the country during the cash-rich league, the cricketer’s family wanted to make use of the break he got from sport and get him married.

However, destiny had some other plans for Rajat. The right-handed batter was called up by RCB as a replacement for the injured Luvnith Sisodia on April 3 after a few matches of the ongoing IPL season.

The Madhya Pradesh batter didn’t disappoint and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. He played a match-winning knock when it mattered the most for RCB during Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday.

Showing his fearless approach in a knockout game, Rajat hit 112 not out from just 54 balls and became the first uncapped player in the history of IPL to score a century in the play-offs.

“We have chosen a girl from Ratlam for him. The plan was to get him married on May 9. It was supposed to be a small function and I had booked a hotel too in Indore,” Manohar Patidar, Rajat’s father, was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

Patidar will now tie the knot in July after completing his commitments with the MP team in the Ranji Trophy knockout stages. Madhya Pradesh take on Punjab in their quarter-final outing on June 6.

“The marriage was not supposed to be a grand affair, so we didn’t get invitation cards printed. I have booked a hotel for limited guests but the booking has been advanced as we plan to hold the function in July once he is free from his responsibility with the Madhya Pradesh Ranji team,” he added.

Patidar has been given the backing to go out at No 3 and play attacking cricket for RCB in IPL 2022. The batter has hit 275 runs in 7 matches for RCB at a staggering strike rate of 156.25.

IPL 2022: What Rajat Patidar did was very, very special, says Virat Kohli on RCB’s unlikely hero

0

Kolkata, May 26 Talismanic batter Virat Kohli praised the “very, very special” performance of Rajat Patidar, the unlikely hero of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 14-run win in the Eliminator match of IPL 2022 over newbies Lucknow Super Giants.

On Wednesday, at the Eden Gardens, Patidar cruised to a 49-ball century to remain unbeaten on 112 to set the base for Bangalore’s victory and set up their Qualifier 2 clash with Rajasthan Royals on Friday in Ahmedabad.

“The magnitude of the game was so big that I was feeling the tension in the air because I have been in those situations where you have to cross the line as a team. What he did was very, very special, I don’t think that anyone should take that for granted. You should understand the excellence of the innings and appreciate as a cricketer to watch an innings like that,” said Kohli in a post-match chat video with Patidar uploaded on IPL website.

Patidar, a top-order batter from Madhya Pradesh who was drafted into the side midway through the tournament as an injury replacement for Luvnith Sisodia, came to Bangalore’s rescue after Faf Du Plessis fell for a golden duck. His knock, laced with 12 boundaries and seven sixes, at a strike rate of 207.41, enthralled the capacity crowd at the stadium.

“I told him as well after the game as well that I have seen many impact innings and many innings under pressure over so many years. I have not seen many better than how Rajat played today. Under pressure, big game, a first uncapped player in the history of IPL to get a hundred in playoffs,” added Kohli.

Asked about his mindset while coming out to bat, Patidar explained, “Seriously, there was pressure but I had the belief that if I stitch a partnership, I can get the team to a good position. It didn’t matter to me if I had played a few dot balls initially and had the trust that I could cover up for it if I stayed at the wicket for long. I had in mind that if a dot ball is played, then the mind will not be in pressure and irrespective of the bowler in front, can cover up later.”

Patidar put on key partnerships for Bangalore, starting from a 66-run stand with Kohli, who made 25, and followed it up with a whirlwind partnership of 92 runs with wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who was unbeaten on 37 off 23 balls. “The innings I had played till now (in the tournament), it was played till 14-15 overs. Here, a couple of wickets fell and I had in my mind that if I save my end and get some runs, will take the team to a safe position. That was my focus,” added Patidar.

Lucknow came close to chasing 208 but when KL Rahul fell in the 19th over to pacer Josh Hazlewood, the fate of the match was sealed effectively in Bangalore’s favour. “During the chase, I felt if KL Rahul played till the end, then the match could be gone out of the hand. I was thinking that no matter what happens, someone get KL Rahul out so that we can come on top,” stated Patidar.

Echoing the same sentiment as Patidar’s, Kohli added, “At the end, there were a few tense moments. Obviously, it was a big game, but I think our bowlers held their nerve very well. Waniya (Hasaranga) how he bowled through his middle overs was outstanding. Josh (Hazlewood) bowled that important over in the end, and getting two wickets for us was crucial. Harshal was unbelievable while Siraj with the new ball was great and Shahbaz bowled his four overs well.”

Now with the Kolkata leg of playoffs over, Bangalore will travel to Ahmedabad to take on Rajasthan in Qualifier 2 on Friday, where the winner of the match will face Gujarat Titans in the title clash at the same venue on Sunday.

“We were really happy that we got across the line. The best thing is we have one day and then we play again the day after tomorrow. Absolutely cannot wait to get to Ahmedabad and take the field again. We are just so excited and happy with how things have gone. We just want to go further in this tournament. Hopefully two more good games and then we all can celebrate,” concluded Kohli.

IPL 2022: Harshal Patel admits to being nervous while defending 35 off 18 balls against Lucknow

0

Kolkata, May 26 In the IPL 2022 Eliminator between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Eden Gardens, Harshal Patel was entrusted with the task of preventing Lucknow from chasing 208. When he arrived, Lucknow needed 41 off the last three overs.

That soon became 35 off 18 balls as Patel conceded a wide and five more wides beating wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Starts like this would have made even the most passionate Bangalore fans think of the umpteen heartbreaks in previous knockout matches. But it wasn’t to be as Patel shed his yorkers to go back to slower and hard length balls, which worked as Marcus Stoinis was caught at deep cover.

Patel went on to concede only two more runs in his last three legal balls to leave Lucknow needing 33 off the last 12 balls, eventually falling short by 14 runs. After the match ended, Patel admitted to being nervous and explained how he had to change his plans in a jiffy.

“Definitely I was nervous, there’s no doubt about that. If you are defending 35 off 18 balls, you’re going to be nervous, there’s no way around it. But when I conceded six runs off wides without bowling a legal delivery, I knew the wide yorker won’t work. So I wanted to go back to the plans that had worked for me in my first two overs and give myself the best opportunity to get (Marcus) Stoinis and KL (Rahul) out,” said Patel in the post-match virtual press conference.

“Fortunately, I got Stoinis out at the boundary, luckily Hoff (Josh Hazlewood) got KL (KL Rahul) out as well. The game changed there. At different venues, the way you bowl changes differently, the skill remains the same though but the percentage of me bowling yorkers, slower balls, and hard lengths varies depending on how the surface is playing and the areas where batters are trying to hit. Idea is that we assess the conditions quickly and try to adapt well,” added the right-arm pacer.

In the tournament, Patel has picked 19 wickets and remarked that how seeing the bowling of Lucknow gave him ideas to zero on the ideal line and length for bowling in the second innings. “There wasn’t much dew, but when it rained and covers were on, the moisture that is there underneath comes up to the surface, so the outfield was a tad damp because of that.”

“Whenever their bowlers bowled short or slow balls, the ball wasn’t coming on that well onto the bat. That was a clue for me to bowl short and into the pitch as slow as I can, and then mix it up with a good yorker or nice hard lengths. But I knew a majority of my deliveries are going to be slower balls on this sort of a wicket because if you gave pace, it was becoming really easy to hit.”

Patel’s overall bowling efforts in the Eliminator were 1/25 in four overs, identical to the figures picked by Lucknow’s left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan. But his figures came on the back of suffering a split webbing on his bowling hand, which hadn’t been healed completely.

“Luckily, I didn’t have to make any changes to my skill, because the skin superficially has healed quite well. So I was able to bowl my slower balls and I was able to bowl whatever I wanted to bowl. We tried everything in practice yesterday (Tuesday).”

“I bowled 30-40 balls and was pretty confident this would hold up as long as I don’t get another impact. So, I didn’t have to make a lot of changes. Luckily, it healed just enough for me to play this game.”

With Bangalore all set to face off against Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 2 for a place in the final, Patel said he is always geared up to bowl the tough overs for his team in the tournament. “Whether I will be able to deliver or not, I don’t know, but I want to be in those situations, there’s no doubt about that. I’+ve been wanting to do that for the past two-three years.”

“I’ve been doing it for Haryana (domestic cricket). I want to do it at the biggest stage, and I will continue to put myself in those situations. Sometimes it’s going to come off, sometimes it won’t. There will be games which I will end up losing for the team and I am okay with that as long as I don’t shy away from these challenges.”

IPL 2022, Eliminator: Patidar’s century, Hazlewood’s three wickets power Bangalore to Qualifier 2 (ld)

Kolkata, May 26 Rajat Patidar produced a knock for the ages, slamming a 49-ball century while Josh Hazlewood picked three wickets in powering Royal Challengers Bangalore to Qualifier 2 of IPL 2022, defeating Lucknow Super Giants by 14 runs in the Eliminator at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

After rain delayed proceedings by an hour and ten minutes, Patidar slammed 12 boundaries and seven sixes for scoring an unbeaten 112 off just 54 balls, taking Lucknow’s bowling attack to the cleaners. Patidar was brutal in the last five overs, which brought a whopping 84 runs with Dinesh Karthik providing finishing fireworks in an unconquered 37 as Bangalore posted a mammoth 207/4.

In reply, Lucknow was kept in the hunt, thanks to a 96-run stand between KL Rahul (79 off 58 balls) and Deepak Hooda (45 off 26 balls). But with Hazlewood making three strikes and Harshal Patel conceding just 1/25 in his four overs apart from a superb fielding display, Lucknow could make only 193/6. The win means that Bangalore will face Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 at Ahmedabad on Friday.

After Quinton de Kock and Manan Vohra fell without making much impact, Rahul opened up by taking two sixes and a boundary off Siraj in the final over of power-play. With Hooda playing some shots and fetching boundaries, Lucknow was kept in the hunt. But Bangalore succeeded in containing the run-flow with some sharp fielding, especially from Wanindu Hasaranga on the third ball of the tenth over.

With 99 needed off the last seven overs, Rahul smacked Hazlewood for six over deep midwicket to bring up his fifty in 43 balls. Hooda also hit Hazlewood for a six-over long-on before clubbing Hasaranga for a brace of sixes over the same region. But the leg-spinner had the last laugh, going past Hooda’s attempted slog-sweep to rattle the stumps.

Marcus Stoinis ended the over by slog-sweeping Hasaranga over wide long-on for the third six of the over. In the leg-spinner’s next over, Rahul shuffled across to slog-sweep Hasaranga for a six-over fine leg followed by another sweep for a boundary through the same region.

But Bangalore bounced back by having Stoinis caught at deep cover off Patel, who conceded just eight runs despite leaking six runs in the start as extras. Hazlewood produced the knockout punch in the 19th over when Rahul moved across to scoop, only to be caught by a leaping fine leg and followed it up by catching Krunal Pandya for a golden duck off his own bowling, enough to seal the match in Bangalore’s favor as Rahul’s late acceleration went in vain.

Earlier, Patidar, who was not even picked at the mega auction and came in mid-way as an injury replacement for Luvinth Sisodia, played every role in the book for enthralling the capacity crowd with a breath-taking knock. He came in when the ball was new, waited for some time, and then unleashed an onslaught equally against pace and spin to enthrall a capacity crowd at Eden Gardens, who will be remembering his knock for a long time to come.

After Mohsin Khan provided the early breakthrough by dismissing Faf du Plessis for a golden duck and luring the right-hander to nick one behind to keeper Quinton de Kock, Patidar got going with an uppercut over point off Avesh Khan and then hammered a harmless short ball with pullover midwicket for back-to-back boundaries.

Pandya came under thrashing from Patidar in the final over of power-play, hitting three boundaries and a six to take 20 runs off the over and bring up Bangalore’s fifty. With Patidar going fast and furious, he lost support from another end as Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mahipal Lomror fell quickly in the middle overs.

But he continued to be on a roll, bringing his fifty in 28 balls. It was a period where Bangalore benefitted from reprieves given by Lucknow, starting from Rahul dropping Dinesh Karthik at four and Hooda dropping Patidar at 72. That set the tone for Patidar to unleash carnage on Ravi Bishnoi, whacking three sixes and two boundaries from wide long-off to deep mid-wicket as the 16th over yielded 27 runs.

After Karthik took three boundaries off Avesh in the 17th over, Patidar was again dropped, this time on 93 by Vohra, and on the very next ball, pulled over deep mid-wicket for six to bring up a sensational century in 49 balls. Karthik and Patidar smacked 21 and 13 runs off the last two overs to help Bangalore cross 200-mark, which was just enough in the end.

Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 207/4 in 20 overs (Rajat Patidar 112 not out, Dinesh Karthik 37 not out; Mohsin Khan 1/25, Krunal Pandya 1/39) beat Lucknow Super Giants 193/6 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 79, Deepak Hooda 45; Josh Hazlewood 3/43, Harshal Patel 1/25) by 14 runs

With his anticipatory bail plea likely to be disposed of on Friday, if the court fails to give him bail, then it remains to be seen if he will land in Cochin on Monday or not.

Victim opposes actor-producer Vijay Babu’s anticipatory bail plea

Kochi, May 26 The actress, who has accused actor-producer Vijay Babu of rape, on Thursday asked the Kerala High Court not to grant him anticipatory bail, as an accused cannot decide the terms of bail.

The court, after hearing both the sides, said the plea of the actor-producer, who is on the run ever since the allegations came out, will not be considered if he fails to return to Kerala on May 30, and posted the case for Friday.

The Kerala Police has been trying their best to bring back Vijay Babu, who slipped out of the country last month to Dubai and from thereafter the police began steps to issue a red corner notice – headed for Georgia and is now there.

His counsel has already informed the court that he will be landing in Kerala on Monday.

The actor-producer was on the run after the actress from Kozhikode filed a complaint in Ernakulam on April 22 that she was raped and beaten up by him several times in a flat in Kochi.

She has also accused him of giving her intoxicants before sexually abusing her.

Soon after the news surfaced, Vijay Babu appeared live on his social media handle claiming that he was the “real victim” in this case, adding that he would take appropriate legal steps against the complainant whom he also named.

The police, apart from the initial complaint, has registered a second case against him for disclosing the name of the complainant.
