The six-month-long festival, to be celebrated between July and December, will be held in Delhi-NCR and in different states. It will have a special emphasis on the 32 million large Indian diaspora population living outside India as they have also been instrumental in bringing India this far in its evolutionary journey.

It will also ensure the participation of diaspora youth and talent across various activities which include classical dance, popular Indian team sports, and yoga.

“Through the NRI festival, we want to not only reinforce in the minds of all Indians living outside, the achievements we have made while we celebrate 75 glorious years of Independence, but also showcase our rich culture and tradition which has played a role in getting India on the international map, be it in the field of Yoga, Classical Dance, Music or Sports,” Dr Naval Verma, Chairman of Rejoice Health Foundation told IANS.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is about the awakening of the nation and of global peace and development, and an elixir of atmanirbharta. The Indian diaspora had extended its support amid a brutal second wave of Covid-19

Many Indian doctors in the US were offering their services, others were organizing donation drives and generating awareness.

According to a Ministry of External Affairs report, there are 32 million NRIs and overseas citizens of India (OCIs) residing outside India and overseas Indians comprise the world’s largest overseas diaspora.

Every year 25 lakhs Indians migrate overseas, which is the highest annual number of migrants in the world.

The Rejoice Health foundation with the help of other organizations will be inviting a large number of the Indian diaspora for each of the activities in commemoration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

“We expect a few million to either directly participate or view various activities over the next six months,” Verma said.

K’taka woman’s suicide: Family, Hindu outfits allege ‘love jihad’

0

Udupi (Karnataka), May 27 The suicide case of a young woman has taken a serious turn after some Hindu organizations and her family alleged that she was a victim of ‘love jihad’ in Karnataka’s Udupi district.

Shilpa Devadiga, 25, a resident of the Uppinakudru village near Kundapur city, died on May 25 after consuming rat poison. Hindu activists and her family have alleged that it was a case of love jihad and demanded action against the accused person.

The police have recovered a letter from the residence of Shilpa. Police sources said that the letter was in the form of a poem that talks about her exploitation.

The family of Shilpa has lodged a complaint with the Kundapur police station alleging the role of Azeez, a resident of Koteshwar behind her suicide. They have also named his wife, Salma Azeez. They charged that the accused forced her to convert to Islam and blackmailed her with obscene videos.

According to police, Shilpa was working in a garment shop for three years. She got in touch with the accused Azeez when she went to tutorials before joining the work. Though married the accused allegedly promised her marriage and abused her physically.

He often called her to his house. However, later he refused to marry her. Recently, Azeez came near her workplace and abused her. Not able to bear the insult, Shilpa consumed poison on May 23.

The brother of Shilpa informed police that though being married, the accused had trapped his sister Shilpa into a relationship. It is also alleged that he had sent her sweet messages promising her marriage and had sent obscene photos to her.

Hindu activists have alleged that the accused had recorded videos of sexual acts. When she asked him to marry her, the accused asked her to convert to Islam. On her objection, he threatened her with releasing her videos on social media.

IPL 2022: Been frustrating not getting the results we wanted to get, admits Tim David

0

Mumbai, May 27 IPL 2022 has been a season to forget for Mumbai Indians, with the five-time champions finishing at the bottom of the table with just four wins out of 14 league matches. Now, big-hitting batter Tim David admitted that there was frustration when the desired results weren’t coming.

Mumbai’s season began with eight losses on the trot before taking a win against Rajasthan Royals on April 30. Though they managed three more wins, including a five-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals to send Royal Challengers Bangalore into the playoffs, it was too late for the Rohit Sharma-led side to make a turnaround in their campaign.

“There’s been times when it’s been frustrating not getting the results we wanted to get straightaway. But it’s also been a rewarding season in terms of that we’ve been challenged. Personally, I’ve been challenged,” said David in a video posted by the franchise on their social media accounts.

In his first year for Mumbai after being bought by them for INR 8.25 crores in the mega auction, David was dropped after scores of 12 and 1 in the first two matches. He was eventually recalled into the playing eleven from the win against Rajasthan and showed his dazzling batting skills with an unbeaten 44 against Gujarat Titans, an 18-ball 46 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and ended the tournament with an 11-ball 34 against Delhi.

“I played a couple of games at the start and that was a good experience, my first time playing for MI. First games in India. And then, I obviously was sitting out for the team combination. As a player, it’s tough to deal with because you think you’ve got something to give the team and that’s just a period of time you have to accept. Try and support the teammates as much as you can,” stated David on not getting much game time in the first half of IPL 2022.

At the same time, he explained that he used the period on the sidelines to work hard on his fitness and skills. “I spent a fair bit of time in the gym, probably more than I could do if I was in the playing XI. I worked really hard on my batting, trying to be more stable at the crease and trying to have a more controlled swing. So I would like to think I have got quite a bit stronger. I think I’ve improved so much. It’s been a really good period of growth for me and also some experience on the field.”

David ended the campaign with 186 runs in eight matches at an average of 37.20 and a strike rate of 216.27. The 26-year-old conceded that settling into a new team environment was hard but felt comfortable as the tournament progressed.

“Initially, when you first come into an environment, you don’t know many people. So, it can feel a bit rigid or structured. But as we have gotten further into the tournament, you get more comfortable with everyone that’s here with us as part of the MI team. You get some different relationships with people. Spent a lot of time with Chappie (Paul Chapman) in the gym. So that’s been good.”

He signed off by saying that youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma and Ramandeep Singh are Mumbai’s players for the future editions. “There are some younger guys with some good exuberance. Guys like Ishan (Kishan), he’s an experienced player but he’s good fun to be around and get a bit of energy from him. Can always have a bit of a laugh. Another one I enjoy is Tilak. Having a bit of fun with him. Ramandeep, these guys are all players for the future.”

Twitter abuzz with complaints of unhappy ‘F3’ viewers

0

Hyderabad, May 27 The Telugu film ‘F3’ starring Venkatesh Dagguabti and Varun Tej, which was released in theatres on Friday, has left a mixed impression on audiences.

Reports emanating from the early screenings suggest that ‘F3’ falls short of the expectations set by ‘F2’, the first installment of the ‘Fun & Frustration’ franchise.

The film had a good first half, with Venkatesh’s night blindness as his comedic streak and Varun Tej’s stutter as his entertaining aspect, but it falls flat as the narrative relies solely on the lead actors and lacks a strong story.

The second half consists primarily of old-school slapstick comedy. What the audience perceives is that Anil Ravipudi has tried to imitate the approach of EVV Satyanarayana, the late Telugu director known for his parodies, but he seems to have failed to recognize that it is nearly impossible to replicate the old master’s style.

“‘F3’ may impress a segment of the audience, but it offers nothing new to the general public,” one Twitter user complained. “With the exception of Venky and Varun, this film isn’t even close to ‘F2’. Dissatisfied,” commented another.

“You’re daydreaming if you think #AnilRavipudi will make a sensible comedy,” said yet another tweep. “#F3Movie demonstrates a shocking level of complacency. In a recycled plot, every character is an obnoxious, paper-thin caricature. At the very least, none of the jokes are up to the level of #F2Movie.”

Varun Dhawan, and Kiara Advani enthrall fans in Delhi with ‘The Punjaabban’ song

0

New Delhi, May 27 Bollywood stars Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani got a warm welcome in the national capital as they were greeted with loud cheers, hoots, and whistles.

The actors were in New Delhi on Friday for launching their new number ‘The Punjaabban’ song from their upcoming film ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’. Officially dropping on Saturday, in an exclusive showcase to media and fans of the two stars.

Varun and Kiara also danced and showed their fans the hook step of the number, which also stars Neetu Kapoor and Anil Kapoor, in the Connaught Place area of New Delhi.

‘The Punjaabban’ song is the same number that recently got pulled into a controversy as Pakistani singer Abrar ul Haq accused filmmaker Karan Johar on Twitter of “copying” his song ‘Nach Punjaban’ in his upcoming production without his permission.

Addressing the copyright issue at the song launch, Varun said: “T-series has put out an official statement about this they legally licensed the rights. I think when you have international companies like Youtube, and Spotify … When they are playing music they have very strict laws about copyrights. It’s no joke. All the processes have been followed.”

Slated to release in theatres on June 24, ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ is directed by Raj Mehta.

Global recession can stay for up to 18 months: Elon Musk

0

New Delhi, May 27 Breaking his silence over the current global meltdown, Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Friday said the recession the world is now experiencing owing to multiple macro-economic factors could last up to 18 months.

“Based on past experience, about 12 to 18 months,” Musk replied to a follower who asked him about how long he thinks this recession will last.

“Companies that are inherently negative cash flow (i.e. value destroyers) need to die so that they stop consuming resources,” he added.

World Bank chief David Malpass warned this week that Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine could cause a global recession as the price of food, energy, and fertilizer jump.

“As we look at the global GDP, it’s hard right now to see how we avoid a recession… The idea of energy prices doubling is enough to trigger a recession by itself,” he was quoted as saying in media reports.

Last month, the World Bank cut its global economic growth forecast for this year by almost a full percentage point, to 3.2 percent.

Developing countries are also being affected by shortages of fertilizer, food, and energy.

China has been hit harder by the latest round of lockdowns. The Covid-19 measures have led to a sharp slowdown in economic activity across the country.

The US could also hit a recession before the end of this year or by early 2023, according to the chief investment officer of Hayman Capital.

In India, foreign portfolio investors have pulled out around Rs 2.5 lakh crore from the Indian equity market.

Global financial services provider firm Moody’s Investors Service has slashed India’s GDP projection to 8.8 percent for 2022, from 9.1 percent estimated previously.

The Russia-Ukraine war, high inflation, Covid-19 lockdowns in China, and rising interest rates are the reasons behind the economic activities being hampered across the globe.

0

As per the company’s annual report released on Thursday, the new employment agreement, which is subject to shareholder approval, will come into effect on July 2.

For fiscal FY22 which ended in March, Parekh took home a salary of Rs 71 crore, as per reports. However, of the total Rs, 52 crores came from exercising restricted stock units granted to him before.

The latest round of hikes comes days after the company reappointed him as MD and CEO for five more years starting from July 1.

“Under his leadership, the total shareholder return (TSR) was an impressive 314 percent, the highest among peers. Revenue has grown from Rs 70,522 crore (fiscal 2018) to Rs 1,21,641 crore (fiscal 2022), a compound annual growth rate of 15 percent (versus nine percent for the four years before that), and the profits have also increased from Rs 16,029 to Rs 22,110 crore,” the company said.

Further, the company said it has more than doubled the share of digital revenue from 25.5 percent FY18 to 57.0 percent FY22.

Life imprisonment for Telangana’s serial killer who murdered 17 women

0

Hyderabad, May 27 A serial killer, who murdered 17 women, has been awarded life imprisonment by a court in Telangana’s Jogulamba-Gadwal district.

Yerukali Srinu (47), who used to target women after befriending them at toddy shops, was awarded the sentence in one of the murder cases.

The third Additional District Magistrate held him guilty and on Thursday sentenced him to life imprisonment for the murder of Chitti Alivelamma (53).

The serial killer was arrested in 2019 in Alivelamma’s murder case. The investigations revealed that he killed 16 other women in the last one decade. Srinu’s wife Salamma was also arrested for stocking the stolen property.

Srinu, addicted to liquor, would befriend women who come to toddy shops to drink, would take them out to isolated places in the name of picnic, and after drinking with them would kill them and decamp with their gold and silver ornaments.

Srinu, who had also murdered his own brother, was finally caught when police cracked the murder case of Alivelamma, whose body was found on December 17, 2019, near a village in the Mahabubnagar district

The police investigations had revealed that the accused targetted lone women at toddy shops at various places in Rangareddy and Mahabubnagar districts.

Srinu was convicted and jailed in a few criminal cases. In 2009, he was sentenced to life for killing his brother but was given remission in 2013 for good conduct in jail. However, there was no change in him. After the last time he was released from jail in 2018, authorities had provided him a job at a petrol bunk run by the prison department with the hope that he would mend his ways. However, he continued to indulge in drinking and commit crimes.

He was acquitted in 11 cases. In two of the cases, he was acquitted recently. Police have appealed against his acquittal.

Monkeypox spreads to more than 20 countries: WHO

0

New Delhi, May 27 The monkeypox virus has spread to more than 20 countries, with about 200 confirmed cases and over 100 suspected cases in nations where it is typically not found, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

The global health body has urged nations to increase surveillance of infectious diseases as outbreaks grow.

According to Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s Covid-19 technical lead, more cases of the rare viral illness will likely be reported as surveillance expands, but added that the recent spread is containable, CNBC reported.

“We expect more cases to be detected. We are asking countries to increase surveillance,” Van Kerkhove said during a Q&A on the global health agency’s social media platforms.

“This is a containable situation. It will be difficult, but it’s a containable situation in non-endemic countries.”

Since the first reported case on May 7, in the UK, monkeypox has spread to North America and Europe in recent weeks. The outbreak is driven by a milder West African strain of the virus and most patients recover in a few weeks.

No deaths have been reported so far.

As per the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the European Union (EU) has confirmed 118 cases of monkeypox. Spain and Portugal have reported the largest outbreaks in the EU with 51 and 37 cases, respectively.

The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed 90 cases of the virus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified nine cases across seven states, while Canadian health officials have confirmed 16 cases of monkeypox, all detected in the province of Quebec, the report said.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky noted that some patients in the US haven’t traveled to countries with active outbreaks, suggesting that the virus is spreading domestically.

Health officials in these countries have said a majority of the patients are gay or bisexual men, with the virus spreading in many cases through sex.

However, the officials emphasized that monkeypox can spread to anyone through close physical contact regardless of sexual orientation.

But, monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted disease. The virus can spread through any kind of sustained skin-to-skin contact with an infected person who has a lesion.

It can also spread through body fluids, contaminated bed sheets, and clothing, or respiratory droplets if a person has a lesion in their mouth.

Van Kerhkove suggested health-care professionals consider monkeypox a diagnosis for patients with rash illnesses that present at sexual health clinics, emergency departments, infectious disease clinics, primary-care physicians, and dermatologists, the report said.

“It doesn’t mean that anyone with a rash will have monkeypox but we need to raise awareness about what monkeypox is and isn’t, and we need to ensure that countries have the capacity to test and provide the right information.”

‘F3’ director Anil Ravipudi releases video, targets trolls

0

Hyderabad, May 27 In the middle of the buzz surrounding Anil Ravipudi’s Telugu family entertainer ‘F3’, the director has released a video in which he attempts to silence his trolls.

Ravipudi and his film have been the targets of troll attacks on social media. Unfazed, Ravipudi has stated that he will continue to make films in his signature style and therefore does not take the negative feedback to heart.

The debutant director compares trolls who try to bring down his films to non-vegetarians who shame vegetarians by comparing each individual’s food choices.

“Non-vegetarians have no idea of what vegetarian food tastes like and vegetarians will not stop eating the way they do just because they are being trolled,” Ravipudi said. There is an audience for all types of films as long as they are well-made.

With his over-the-top films that pack in a lot of fun, Ravipudi has carved a niche for himself. His latest, ‘F3’, is out in theatres and early reports suggest that the movie is an entertainer.
