IPL 2022: How Rohit Sharma boosted team-mate Ramandeep’s confidence

0

Mumbai, May 21 When Ramandeep Singh was picked up in the IPL 2022 mega auction by Mumbai Indians, he had played only 13 T20 matches for his state Punjab, apart from 10 List A games and one appearance in first-class cricket. But it was his skill-set, a seam-bowling all-rounder, which caught the eye of the five-time champions. The real gamechanger for Ramandeep, though, was a talk with captain Rohit Sharma that boosted his confidence, something which he will never forget.

“What he’s spoken to me and explained to me is that the main thing is confidence, which will take you to the next level. And that confidence can’t be given by someone else, I have to bring it within myself. And through my performances, through my hard work, that confidence will get built up over time. I feel the X-factor is confidence, that is what will make the difference,” said Ramandeep in a video on Mumbai’s social media accounts.

Ramandeep made his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore and was understandably unable to sleep on the eve of the match after being informed of the same. When he walked on the field to bat, his heart was racing but the feeling of enjoying the moment calmed him down.

“MJ (Mahela Jayawardene) told me at the nets that I’ll probably be playing the next match. At night, there was obviously the feeling of, ‘I’m going to play the IPL’. It’s a platform I’ve been seeing since childhood and I’ll get to be there. Obviously, there was no chance of sleep coming. Everyone told me that this moment will not come again, so don’t take the tension of it, just live it and enjoy the moment. And that’s what I tried to do, to enjoy the moment as much as I could.

“My heart was racing before I had to go and bat, in front of such a large crowd. But as soon as I went in, everything calmed down. My focus was just on playing the bowler. There was Virat Kohli at slip, Glenn Maxwell at midwicket, and Dinesh Karthik as the wicketkeeper…but in the middle, I didn’t feel it.

“I was like, ‘I also have a bat in hand, and at the end of the day, the game is one of bat and ball.’ I felt proud of myself that I didn’t get flustered by whoever was standing around me and could tell myself I just have to play. That was a very good feeling.”

Though Ramandeep was left out of the eleven after the match against Bangalore, he never got the feeling of being left in the cold and credits Sharma as well as head coach Mahela Jayawardene for not letting him feel like that.

“The franchise didn’t let me feel down. MJ came to me and said, ‘This is a tactical change, nothing to do with your performance. We don’t judge people on one match here.’ And the main thing was, Rohit paaji used to tell me, ‘We are preparing you for this level and guiding you’.

“So obviously, if a legend like Rohit Sharma is coming and explaining things to you, half of the pressure is released automatically, just like that. Rohit paaji would give me tasks in the nets, that ‘You have to do this today. While bowling, bowl these slower balls and yorkers. Dominate while batting’.”

Ramandeep’s time of reckoning came in Mumbai’s last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad when he picked 3/20 with the ball. But he has set his sights on dishing out all-arounder performances like the hard-hitting Andre Russell does for Kolkata Knight Riders. “For me, it would be Andre Russell (to look up to). The way he’s playing for his team, I want to play for MI. I want to win games for MI like he does. He’s a 100 percent perfect all-rounder in batting and bowling. I want to be that cricketer.”

Apart from stalwarts like Sharma and Jayawardene, Ramandeep also has valuable support from his cousin brother Anmolpreet Singh in the same franchise. “You can’t ask for better than a brother to support you. He was always like, ‘This platform is such that you get to know what’s what only after playing. So even if there is a failure or two, you have to not let your guard down. Don’t worry’.

“I was also telling him the same! Obviously, support between brothers is really important. But MI is such a franchise that it’s really a family. Everyone is coming to you all the time, and everyone is there to support you. I would say everyone are brothers here.”

After hearing a lot of names, fans of the actor assumed that director Koratala Siva would reveal everything on May 20, NTR’s birthday. However, nothing of the sort has surfaced, further disappointing fans.

Why ‘no fear’ and a ‘fresh slate’ make two new IPL franchises a force to reckon with

0

London, May 21 Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen feels “no fear” and “a fresh slate” has worked for the two new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises — Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants –, adding that he was simply amazed by the latter’s 210-run opening-wicket partnership in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 18.

Thanks to the record opening-wicket partnership between South African Quinton de Kock (140 not out off 70 balls) and skipper KL Rahul (68 not out off 51 balls), LSG put 210 runs on the board and won the match by two runs to go second on the IPL points table behind the Titans.

Rajasthan Royals, though, pushed LSG to third on the table following their five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on Friday night.

“It feels right that the two teams definitely through to the playoffs are Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. I’ve been very impressed by both. The fact that they are new franchises means that they have approached this competition with no fear and a fresh slate, which has worked for them,” opined Pietersen on Betway Insider.

“Lucknow batting for 20 overs without losing a single wicket on Wednesday was incredible. It’s not something you can ever imagine happening, considering the risks you take and the shots you play. Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul always had the potential to do something special as an opening partnership but that was crazy and puts them in a great position to go on and win the tournament.”

Pietersen added that Royal Challengers Bangalore had kept the IPL league phase alive right till the very end by defeating Gujarat Titans by eight wickets at the Wankhede on May 19. While the top three playoffs slots have been filled by the Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Lucknow Super Giants (in that order), the last slot will be decided after the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals later on Saturday.

A win for Delhi will take them to the playoffs, while a loss would see the Faf du Plessis-led RCB clinch the last-four berth.

“The race for the playoffs is well and truly on after RCB got the job done on Thursday. Delhi is another team that I follow closely and always hope to do well. Mitchell Marsh is flying at the moment and Kuldeep Yadav is a match-winner, so I think if they get into the top four they will be dangerous,” said Pietersen.

Woman protesting Ukraine sexual violence removed from Cannes red carpet

0

Los Angeles, May 21 A woman protesting against sexual violence in Ukraine was removed from the Cannes Film Festival red carpet during the world premiere of George Miller’s ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’.

Video footage from the carpet saw a woman trying to crash the event while screaming at the top of her lungs. She was quickly removed from the carpet by a handful of security guards.

The topless woman was wearing only panties and had the word “scum” written on her lower back, reports Variety.

The radical feminist activist organiSation Scum posted on Twitter: “This activist exposed the war rapes and sexual torture committed on Ukrainian women by Russian soldiers.”

Blood-red paint also appeared on her lower back and legs.

The colors of the Ukrainian flag were spray-painted across the woman’s torso, as were the words: “Stop raping us.”

Security guards quickly covered up the woman and removed her from the red carpet.

The incident occurred on the red carpet in front of the Palais for the premiere of ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’, Miller’s first directorial effort since dazzling the film industry with ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.

The film stars Tilda Swinton as a scholar who encounters a magical Djinn (Idris Elba) while in a hotel room in Istanbul and learns of his fantastical past while contemplating the three wishes she can make in his presence. Miller, Swinton, and Elba appeared on the Cannes red carpet after the woman was already removed.

Getting into Cannes’ Lumiere theater in the Palais requires multiple security checks.

Guards are positioned outside of the carpet at stations that require attendees to walk through a metal detector.

Once an attendee gets through that checkpoint, they meet more guards at the start of the carpet that directs them when they are allowed to enter the theater. The red carpet itself is lined with security.

Another honor killing in Hyderabad was, Man stabbed to death in public

0

Hyderabad, May 21 In another ‘honor’ killing in Hyderabad, a 24-year-old man was killed in public in front of his father over an inter-caste love marriage.

Neeraj Kumar Panwar (22) was stabbed to death by five men, said to be relatives of his wife, near the busy fish market in the Begum Bazar area under Shahinayathgunj police station limits on Friday night.

The young businessman was returning home along with his father Rajender Panwar after closing the shop when the assailants attacked him from behind his head with a granite stone. As he fell down, they stabbed him with a sickle used to cut coconut.

Panwar, a resident of Kolsawadi in the Begum Bazar area who was into the retail groundnut business, had a love marriage about one-and-a-half years ago with Sanjana (20), a resident of the same area but belonging to another caste. A child was born to them about one-and-a-half months ago.

As Sanjana’s family was against the marriage, they developed a grudge against Neeraj. They were allegedly planning the murder for the last six months. For one week they conducted a recent to know Neeraj’s movements from the shop to his house. Since the weather on Friday was cloudy and there were not many people on the road, they decided to execute the plot.

The assailants, who came on two bikes, escaped after committing the crime. Police shifted Neeraj to the hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

Traders gathered on the road and staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the accused and stringent punishment. They called for a bandh in Begum Bazar on Saturday.

Police examined CCTV footage and picked up a few suspects. Working on some clues, police on Saturday apprehended four accused at Gurumitkal in Karnataka, about 150 km from Hyderabad.

According to the victim’s relatives, he had approached the police a year ago seeking protection as he was facing threat to his life from his wife’s family.

This was the second honor killing in Hyderabad in less than a month. On May 4, a 25-year-old man was hacked to death in Saroornagar over an inter-faith marriage.

Billapuram Nagaraju was murdered in public in front of his wife by her brother and another relative.

Nagaraju had married Ashrin Sultana after the latter eloped with him early this year.

IPL 2022: Have full confidence that Delhi will have a good game against Mumbai, says Ricky Ponting

0

Mumbai, May 20 Saturday’s match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday is literally a do-or-die clash for Delhi Capitals. A win against the five-time champions will help Delhi displace Royal Challengers Bangalore from fourth place in the points table and seal their ticket to the playoffs.

Now, Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting Friday has expressed full confidence in his side to get the crucial victory against Mumbai. Coincidentally, Delhi had defeated Mumbai in their IPL 2022 tournament opener. The Rishabh Pant-led side goes into this virtual quarterfinal clash with a 17-run win over Punjab Kings.

“I have got full confidence in the players that they will have a really good game on Saturday. We strung back-to-back wins together for the first time (after Delhi’s previous match against Punjab) in the season. It’s been an up and down season for us, but we’ve played some good cricket. I always talk about playing our best cricket at the business end of the tournament and peaking at the right time. I’ve got a feeling that the boys are about to do that,” said Ponting in an official release by the franchise.

For Delhi, swashbuckling opener David Warner has been leading the batting charts with 427 in eleven innings at an average of 53.38 and strike rate of 151.95, including five half-centuries while his fellow Australian Mitchell Marsh has scores of 63 and 89 in Delhi’s last two matches.

Ponting expects the duo as well as other experienced players in the side to step up to the occasion against Mumbai.

“Davey (Warner) has done a really good job at the top of the order. We have also seen how destructive Mitchell Marsh can be at the number three slot. And among the bowlers, Kuldeep (Yadav) has been exceptional and Axar (Patel) has been bowling economically as well. Shardul has shown good form in the recent matches. There are some good signs as far as our senior players are concerned and going into big games, you need your more experienced players to step up.”

Ponting further remarked that with the race to playoffs heating up, there has been a change in the environment in the Delhi camp in the last two weeks. “I have just got the sense that the environment within the group has been a little different in the last couple of weeks and players need to take full credit for that.”

“As a coaching group, we’ll look to get the players well prepared for their next challenge and it’s certainly a challenge that we are looking forward to. I am very excited about what Saturday holds for us and hopefully, we’ve got another week of cricket to play after that.”

Thailand Open: Sindhu reaches semis with win over world No 1 Yamaguchi

0

Bangkok, May 20 Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu advanced to the women’s singles semi-finals of the Thailand Open 2022 by knocking out world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, here on Friday.

Sindhu, a former world champion, defeated the world No 1 Japanese shuttler 21-15, 20-22, 21-13 in the quarterfinals of the BWF Super 500 event at the Impact Arena.

In the first game, Sindhu and Yamaguchi matched the energy and were leveled at 14-all. The Indian ace won the next five points and went on to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Sindhu continued the fast-paced approach and raced to an 11-5 lead in the second game break. However, the Indian shuttler, who had lost to Yamaguchi in the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia championships last month from a similar position, ran out of steam and conceded the game.

Wary of another comeback from the world champion, Sindhu upped the ante in the decider and went on to win the match convincingly. With this victory, Sindhu extended her head-to-head record over Akane Yamaguchi to 14-9.

World No 7 Sindhu will take on world No 4 and Tokyo 2020 champion Chen Yu Fei of China in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Eating blueberries can lower BP, cut heart disease risk

0

New York, May 20 Consuming blueberries can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women with high blood pressure, according to new research.

Consumption of 22 grams of freeze-dried highbush blueberry powder (equivalent to about 1 cup of fresh blueberries), mixed with water, taken daily for 12 weeks improved the function of the inner lining of blood vessels (called the endothelium), according to preliminary findings of a study. The finding was presented at the International Conference on Polyphenols and Health in London.

“We found an improvement in endothelial function which is important for human health, as endothelial dysfunction is linked to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease development,” said Sarah Ardanuy Johnson, from Colorado State University in the US.

“We also found evidence that blueberries improved endothelial function through reductions in oxidative stress in the body,” she said.

Oxidative stress is the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body and can damage cells and tissues, which promotes endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease development.

Previous research has demonstrated that polyphenols and polyphenol-rich foods like blueberries can reduce oxidative stress.

“To observe a direct link between reductions in oxidative stress and improvements in endothelial function in humans is exciting and provides insight into how blueberries promote cardiovascular health,” Johnson said.

They performed a randomized clinical trial in 43 estrogen-deficient postmenopausal women aged 45-65 years with elevated blood pressure or stage 1-hypertension.

“We don’t fully understand the health benefits and how they interact in the human body,” Johnson said of blueberries, “but we know that they’re really important to human health.”

The team is exploring the role of the gut microbiome in determining the cardiovascular-protective effects of blueberries and their polyphenols.

Johnson said the team observed increases in blood metabolites that are products of the metabolism of anthocyanins (polyphenols found in blueberries that give them their blue color) and metabolism of polyphenols by the gut microbiome.

The key takeaway is that there are benefits to consuming blueberries on a regular basis to help improve cardiovascular health, she said, adding that foods rich in phytochemicals may also include many fruits and vegetables, cocoa, chocolate, tea, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and spices.

Vijay Babu slips out of Dubai? Red Corner notice to be issued on Tuesday

0

Kochi, May 20 Police in Kerala suspect that actor-producer Vijay Babu, who is on the run after being accused of rape, has fled Dubai where he was hiding, for another country.

“We suspect that he has left Dubai for another country and we are waiting for the confirmation. Based on the court warrant, the Regional Passport Officer has impounded his passport. If he doesn’t surrender before Tuesday, then we will be issuing a red corner notice,” said Kochi City Police Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju who is heading the probe to track down Vijay Babu.

Babu, according to the police, is on the run after an actress from Kozhikode filed a complaint in Ernakulam on April 22 that she was raped and beaten up by him several times at a flat in Kochi.

Soon after the news surfaced, Babu appeared live on his social media handle claiming that he was the “real victim” in this case, adding that he would take appropriate legal steps against the complainant, whom he also named.

The police apart from her complaint, have registered a second case against the actor for disclosing the name of the complainant.

She has also accused the actor of giving her intoxicants before sexually abusing her.

As soon as the case was registered, Babu who was in Goa slipped out of the country to Dubai and he also filed an anticipatory bail plea in the Kerala High Court which is expected to be heard soon.

Babu, knowing that the Kerala Police was out to get him, reportedly slipped out of Dubai to another country, which does not have an extradition treaty with India.

Babu is doing everything he can to get anticipatory bail and he is expected to move the Supreme Court, if he fails to get relief from the Kerala High Court.

The Kerala Police have failed to get Babu from Dubai despite approaching the Indian Embassy in the UAE.
