IPL 2022: De Kock powers Lucknow to playoffs with thrilling win over Kolkata (Ld)

0

Mumbai, May 19 Rinku Singh’s sensational fighting knock went in vain as an excellent century by Quinton de Kock and impactful bowling of Mohsin Khan (3/20), Marcus Stoinis (3/23) led Lucknow Super Giants to a two-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in a thrilling 66th match of the IPL 2022 at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, here on Wednesday.

With this win, Lucknow qualified for the playoffs after getting 18 points in their 14 league matches. They joined Gujarat Titans, who had become the first team to reach the playoffs in the ongoing season.

On the other hand, Kolkata was eliminated from the playoffs race after finishing the league stages with 12 points from 14 matches. They joined defending champions Chennai Super Kings and five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who have already been eliminated from the playoffs hunt.

A historic hundred by Quinton de Kock (140 not out off 70) and a solid fifty by KL Rahul (68 not out off 51) powered Lucknow Super Giants to 210/0 in 20 overs, after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Both De Kock and Rahul remained not out till the last ball of the innings didn’t show any mercy on KKK bowlers and broke many records during the process.

Notably, it was for the first time a team batted the entire 20 overs in IPL without losing a wicket. It was also the highest opening stand ever in IPL history and the third-highest partnership for any wicket in the cash-rich league.

Chasing a mammoth total, KKR were off to a poor start as their openers got out cheaply. Venkatesh Iyer bagged a four-ball duck while Tomar’s debut with the bat lasted just eight balls where he scored four.

However, Nitish Rana was in a dismissive mood. Avesh Khan leaked 21 in the fourth over against Rana while Jason Holder was clobbered for 4, 6, and 4 in the next over. K Gowtham too was taken for three boundaries as KKR ended the powerplay at 60 for 2.

Rana eventually fell to Gowtham for 42 off 22 in the first ball of the 8th over but Shreyas Iyer and Sam Billings had other plans. Both KKR batters batted with an aggressive approach and took their team to 99 for 2 at the halfway mark. Their positive intent also put pressure on LSG bowlers as Ravi Bishnoi leaked 16 in the 11th with Holder was taken for 10 in the 12th.

At 125 for 3, KKR were in with a huge chance to dent LSG’s hopes and Rahul was left with no choice but to turn to Mohsin Khan, their best bowler on the night. The left-arm pacer helped his side make a remarkable comeback by giving away just two in the 13th over and that led to Shreyas (50 off 29) falling in the next over as the pressure mounted. A wicket gave Avesh the opportunity to stage a recovery – giving away just two against Russell in the 15th over.

At one stage, KKR needed 77 off 30 and they looked clearly out of the race to make it to the playoffs. Billings was stumped in the 16th while Russell struggled his way to 5 off 11 before getting out in the 17th as KKR was crumbling under the pressure. But, it wasn’t as straightforward as LSG would have wanted as lower down the order, Rinku Singh (40 off 15) and Sunil Narine (21 not out off 7) showed the fighting spirit. With 38 needed off 12, Holder was taken for 17 by Rinku and Narine to leave 21 for the final over.

Rinku hit Marcus Stoinis for 4, 6, 6 in the first three balls and took a double on the fourth delivery of the last over as KKR needed 5 runs in 3 balls. However, in the fifth ball of the over, Rinku got out courtesy of a spectacular one-handed catch by Evin Lewis while diving across to his left. With three runs needed off the last ball, Stoinis clean bowled Umesh Yadav and sealed a thrilling two-run win and playoff spot for LSG.

Mohsin Khan (3/20), and Marcus Stoinis (3/23) were the most successful bowlers for Lucknow while Krishnappa Gowtham (1/23) and Ravi Bishnoi (1/34) also picked one wicket each.

Earlier, openers Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul gave Lucknow a steady start by scoring 44/0 in the powerplay. De Cock, who was dropped at third man by debutant Abhishek Tomar off Umesh Yadav in the 3rd over of the innings, was the aggressor while KL Rahul was playing the second fiddle.

After the end of the powerplay, KKR openers Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy bowled with discipline and didn’t allow LSG batters to open their arms, conceding just 13 runs in the next two overs.

Thereafter, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer introduced Andre Russell into the attack and the batter dealt him by rotating the strike before De Kock launched the bowler for a six towards the long-on fence. On the other hand, Rahul also shifted gears and smashed Tim Southee for back-to-back sixers, taking Lucknow to 83/0 after 10 overs.

During the process, Rahul also crossed his 500 runs for the season. He became the second player to do so in five successive editions after Warner who did so in six.

With both Rahul and De Kock going strong against fast bowlers, Shreyas was forced to rely on his spinners as Nitish Rana, Chakravarthy and Narine bowled the next three overs. However, the movie didn’t reap any dividends as De Kock KL Rahul continued the attacking approach and brought up the 100-run partnership in the 13th over of the innings.

Heading into the final five overs, De Kock turned on the screws and smashed Chakravarthy for two sixes and a four in an 18-run over while racing into the 80s while Rahul hit Southee as LSG were racing towards a big total. Soon, De Kock, who was dictating the proceedings in the middle, slammed Andre Russell for a six and four to bring up his century off just 59 balls.

With only two overs to go, both LSG batters dealt in sixes. The Lucknow skipper welcomed Southee with a six and then passed the strike to De Kock, who hit the pacer for three consecutive sixes as the Kiwi bowler conceded 27 runs in the 19th over. The Quinton de Kock show also continued in the final over as he hit Andre Russell for four consecutive boundaries, took 19 runs off the over, and helped Lucknow Super Giants post 210/0 on the board.

Tim Southee (0/57) was the most expensive bowler for KKR while the likes of Andre Russell (0/45) and Varun Chakravarthy (0/38) were also not far behind in conceding runs.

Brief scores: Lucknow Super Giants 210/0 in 20 Overs (Quinton de Kock 140 not out, KL Rahul 68 not out) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 208/8 in 20 Overs (Shreyas Iyer 50, Nitish Rana 42, Rinku Singh 40; Mohsin Khan 3/20) by 2 runs

Pratik Gandhi to play Mahatma Gandhi in biographical web series

0

Mumbai, May 19 A new biographical series based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi is in the works.

The multi-season series, which has been adapted from historian Ramachandra Guha’s two books — ‘Gandhi Before India’ and ‘Gandhi: The Years that Changed the World’ — has cast ‘Scam 1992’ star Pratik Gandhi in the lead role. Pratik incidentally, shares his last name with the father of the nation.

Sharing his excitement about the announcement, Pratik Gandhi said, “I deeply believe in the Gandhian philosophy and its values that echo simplicity in its purest forms. Personally too, I strive to achieve and imbibe many of his qualities and teachings in my daily life.”

He further mentioned, “Moreover, playing the role of Mahatma is very close to my heart ever since my theatre days and now it is a huge honor to yet again essay the role of this legendary leader, on screen. I believe it’s a huge responsibility to essay this role with dignity, grace, and conviction and I can’t wait to embark on this journey with Sameer Nair and his team at Applause.”

Mahatma Gandhi taught the world that a revolution, resistance, and reclamation of freedom don’t always need to be violent, they can be achieved through truth, love, non-violence, and iron-willed determination.

From his earliest days to his actions in South Africa to the great struggle in India, the series will tell the lesser-known stories of his life which played an important role in shaping young Gandhi into a Mahatma. It will also tell the stories of all his compatriots and contemporaries of the freedom movement, incredible personalities who, along with him, played an integral part in the shaping of what became free and modern India.

Ramachandra Guha is confident that the series will do complete justice to his books. “Along the way, he made many friends and not a few enemies too. I am delighted that my books on Gandhi are now being adapted for this ambitious and exciting series. I am confident that it will bring the complex contours of Gandhi’s life and the moral essence of his teachings to viewers across the globe,” Guhar said in a statement.

Applause Entertainment, which is a part of the Aditya Birla Group, has acquired the rights to Guha’s books and the series will be produced at global standards for a worldwide audience and shot extensively across several Indian and International locations.

Sameer Nair, the CEO, of Applause Entertainment, said, “Ramachandra Guha is a historian and storyteller par excellence, and we are honored to adapt his classic books — Gandhi before India, and Gandhi – The Years That Changed the World — to screen. We couldn’t think of anyone better than the incredibly talented Pratik Gandhi to bring alive the Mahatma, and his philosophies of peace and love that shook the world.”

“We believe that only a richly layered, multi-season drama series will do real justice to Gandhi and to all the great personalities that embed the proud and illustrious history of India’s Freedom Struggle. This is a story of the birthing of modern India for a global audience,” he concluded.

Rajesh Khanna, Big B’s iconic film ‘Anand’ set for a remake

0

Mumbai, May 19 Filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic ‘Anand’, starring the then superstar Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, is set for a remake helmed by Sameer Raj Sippy, grandson of the film’s original producer, N.C. Sippy, and Vikram Khakhar.

The director and cast of the film, which is in its scripting stage, are yet to be finalized.

Sharing his excitement about the development, producer Vikram Khakhar said: “Digging into our own classics, we will find invaluable gems rather than scouting for stories, internationally or regionally. Placing Anand in the post-Covid era, where we emphasize the value of life, will enhance the story of Anand.”

The 1971 original featured Rajesh Khanna as a terminally ill cancer patient, Anand Sehgal, the onus of whose treatment is taken by Amitabh. However, destiny has its own plans as Anand’s cancer reaches its final stage and he passes away but not before touching the lives of many people whom he spent time with, including a total stranger Isa Bhai Suratwala played by the legendary Johnny Walker.

Producer Sameer Raj Sippy feels that such stories need to be told to the new generation, as they should be made aware of our cinematic heritage. He said: “Keeping in mind the sensibilities of the original film and the emotions attached, I felt the current generation needs to be retold many stories that are so relevant today and especially when there is a great appetite for good content.”

The details regarding the film’s development and technical crew are under wraps. Produced by Sameer Raj Sippy and Vikram Khakhar, the film will soon go into production after finalizing its cast.

‘Dhaakad’ title song released in Varanasi, played on floating LED screen

0

Mumbai, May 19 ‘Tu Hai Dhaakad’ from the Kangana Ranaut-starrer ‘Dhakaad’ was released here amid much fanfare. The song was played on a floating LED screen on the banks of the river Ganga.

The film’s title song has been set to the tune of veteran advertising and film composer Dhruv Ghanekar. It is penned by actor and writer Ishitta Arun and performed by the jazz artist Vasundhara Vee.

Talking about the song, Kangana Ranaut said, “We have released ‘Tu Hai Dhaakad’ during the last leg of our promotional campaign as this song sets the tone of the film. It showcases Agent Agni as an unstoppable force who embodies the never-say-die attitude. The song has an anthem-like quality to it and encompasses my character’s grit and gumption in herself and her abilities.”

‘Tu Hai Dhaakad’ personifies and embodies Agent Agni’s fierce yet vulnerable characteristics. Through the lyrics and the tune, the song underlines the titular character’s journey in the film.

Talking about the song, director Razneesh Ghai added, “I wanted a song which had a rousing aspect to it. I reached out to my friend from the advertising world, musician Dhruv Ghanekar, who has composed many songs in the past. I knew that he would be able to understand what I had in mind and translate it into a tune.”

He added, “The song is inspiring and instills a sense of how one can achieve things against all odds and should never accept defeat. Ishitta Arun has written lyrics that do full justice to the spirit of the film’s story and Agent Agni’s fortitude. Vasundhara Vee’s vocals elevate the song to a whole new level and her singing style makes the song soar and how.”

Producer Deepak Mukut said, “The song ‘Tu Hai Dhaakad’ is inspirational and really apt for the film’s theme and story. It feels wonderful to see that the film which we have made with our blood and sweat, is also scoring high musically. This song highlights the film’s theme and Agent Agni’s spirit, and it will deeply connect the audience to Kangana’s character.”

“All the songs in the film have been composed beautifully and flow organically into the film’s narrative. Soham Rockstar Entertainment is also launching its own music label, SRE Music with Dhaakad, and we are beyond proud to have the film’s album as our inaugural project. Its music will resonate with every audience member and will stay with them long after leaving the theatres,” he concluded.

Presented by Soham Rockstar Entertainment, produced by Deepak Mukut and Sohel Maklai, and co-produced by Hunar Mukut, ‘Dhaakad’, which also stars Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta, is arriving in theatres on May 20, 2022.

Adivi Sesh: I can’t be Major Sandeep, but I can be his parents’ second son

0

Mumbai, May 19 ‘Major’ actor Adivi Sesh spoke about spending time with Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s family during the course of making the film, which is based on the brave martyr who foiled the plans of terrorists by holding the fort during the 26/11 attacks of Mumbai.

Speaking at the song launch of ‘Oh Isha’ from ‘Major’, the actor told the media, “We persuaded uncle and amma (Major Sandeep’s parents) endlessly to meet us just once. Uncle hung up on me a couple of times when I first tried to get in touch with him, then we got a girl from our team to speak with him so that he might agree to talk to us. Eventually, he agreed to meet us.”

Sesh, who has also written the film, continued, “When I met him, he told me that a lot of filmmakers from Bollywood or even Malayalam cinema have tried to approach him but he declined every time because all of them gave away that impression that they were doing us a favor. This he felt was a genuine effort from our side to portray his son’s story.”

“During the course of filming, uncle and amma became a family. ‘Main off-screen Major toh nahi ban sakta par I can try to become their second son (I may not become a Major off-screen but I can surely become their second son’,” the actor added.

“We have dubbed the film in Malayalam as well, out of respect for the great man as he was from Kerala. There were no commercial considerations with regards to this decision,” he concluded.

‘Major’ is set to release on June 3 in cinema halls in Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam.

Unacademy opens tuition centres like BYJU’s as edtech space shrinks

0

Bengaluru, May 18 As the online education space shrinks with India reopening amid the ‘hybrid normal’, learning platform Unacademy on Wednesday announced its foray into opening physical tuition centers across the country, following BYJU’s footsteps.

The Unacademy centres will facilitate the offline classes in the NEET UG, IT JEE and Foundation (9-12) course categories.

The first Unacademy centre will be operational in Kota by next month, followed by similar touchpoints in Jaipur, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Patna, Pune and Delhi, the company said in a statement.

“With ‘Unacademy Centres’ we will bring the best of Unacademy — India’s top Educators, best-in-class technology and product, and state-of-the-art infrastructure — for our learners,” said Gaurav Munjal, Co-Founder and CEO, Unacademy Group.

The platform aims to enroll up to 15,000 learners in the first batch across centres.

Unacademy said it will soon conduct a national scholarship admission test for batch enrollments where rankers can win scholarships.

The move comes at a time when online education providers are looking to go offline as the edtech industry is struggling to sustain their business model.

After post-Covid tremors at Unacademy and BYJU’s-owned WhiteHat Jr, another edtech major Vedantu recently laid off nearly 200 employees.

Edtech platforms are seeing a significant dip in the demand for online learning and some of such firms have either shut shops or fired employees in recent days.

Unacademy recently laid off nearly 600 employees, contractual workers and educators — about 10 per cent of its 6,000-strong workforce across the group.

WhiteHat Jr has also shut its schools division that last year targeted to take its flagship coding curriculum to 10 lakh school students by the next academic year.

In a nightmare for nearly 1,000 employees, homegrown edtech startup Lido Learning which is backed by top entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala, shut operations in February this year.

Woman thrashed, tortured in Dehradun police checkpost

0

Dehradun, May 18 In a shocking incident, a woman was thrashed inside the Jogiwala police check-post in Dehradun. The woman, who is stated to be critical, is undergoing treatment in Coronation Hospital here. It has been alleged that the woman was taken to the check post by the police for interrogation in connection with a theft case, and was tortured and given electric shocks.

The woman works as a servant in the flat where the theft took place. After a secret enquiry into the allegations of torture by the woman, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Janmejaya Khanduri has suspended the Jogiwala police check-post in charge of Deepak Gairola. The SSP has ordered a thorough investigation of the case and said that action will be taken if other policemen were found to be involved in the matter.

Devendra Dhyani, a resident of Mohkampur, had lodged a complaint of theft in the Jogiwala police check-post on May 15. Dhyani is a retired scientist and lives in a flat in Mantra Apartment. In the complaint, he said that he along with his family had gone to Delhi on May 7 due to some work. Thereafter his neighbour on May 14 informed him that the door of his flat and almirah of the house are open.

When the complainant returned to Dehradun on May 15, he found that cash, gold and silver jewellery were missing from the flat. Dhyani complained to the police who then reached the Nehru Colony house of Manju (victim), who used to work in the complainant’s house, for interrogation.

The victim said that three female and one male police constable came to her house. It has been alleged that the police during interrogation first thrashed her and threw away her belongings and then took her to the checkpoint where they put ice on her apart from giving electric shocks. The victim was also beaten with a belt and shoes and also abused. Later the woman in critical condition was dropped at her house. The neighbours took her to Coronation Hospital and admitted her.

The relatives of Manju said that she continues to remain in critical condition and she is not even eating. They said that no stolen items have been found in the house of the victim.

SSP Janmejaya Khanduri said that in the medical report, injuries have been found on the body of the woman. A thorough enquiry has been ordered in the matter.

Mahesh Babu’s ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ is Tollywood’s fastest Rs 100 crore film

0

Hyderabad, May 18 Superstar Mahesh Babu’s commercial entertainer ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ has performed well on weekdays also.

Despite mediocre talk post its release, ‘SVP’ grew stronger in terms of collections, making it the fastest movie to collect Rs 100 crore (worldwide) at the regional box office.

‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ surpassed the Rs 100 crore-mark (100.44 crores) in just five days, making it the fastest purely Telugu film to do so, while also becoming Mahesh Babu’s fourth consecutive Rs 100 crore-plus grossing film.

The film has a five-day worldwide gross of Rs 160.2 crore.

On the other hand, other big-ticket Tollywood movies ‘Radhe Shyam’ and ‘Acharya’ sank at the box office despite the huge hype prior to their theatrical release.

‘Acharya’ which was released on April 29, had a poor start, with a disastrous first week at the box office. ‘Acharya’ had the first-weekend collection of Rs 41 crore, and the film has a total box office collection of Rs 45.2 crore only despite starring Chiranjeevi and his son Ram Charan.

Theatrical rights for Koratala’s directorial ‘Acharya’ are valued at Rs 133 crore, making it the biggest disaster in Telugu cinema, while Prabhas-starrer ‘Radhe Shyam’ falls in the same bracket.

The theatrical run of ‘Radhe Shyam’ was cut short, making it a disaster in all languages it was released. The heavy-budget movie had struggled to generate significant box office revenue due to poor word of mouth.

At the end of its theatrical run in all languages, ‘Radhe Shyam’ earned a total of Rs 83 crore, while the theatrical rights were a whopping Rs 200.5 crore, resulting in huge losses of as much as Rs 117 crore.

‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata,’ directed by Parasuram Petla and starring Mahesh Babu and Keerthy Suresh, is the only film to hold its own at the box office following the blockbuster pan-India releases of ‘RRR’ and ‘Pushpa.’

3 senior Twitter employees quit amid Musk-Agrawal slugfest

0

San Francisco, May 18 Amid the ongoing slugfest between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Parag Agrawal, more Twitter executives have moved on, apparently sensing what may come their way at the micro-blogging platform in the near future.

Ilya Brown, a VP of product management for health, conversation, and growth; Katrina Lane, a VP of Twitter Service; and Max Schmeiser, head of data science, have quit the company, reports TechCrunch.

While Lane and Schmeiser worked at Twitter for nearly one and two years respectively, Brown had been at the micro-blogging platform for nearly six years, according to their LinkedIn profiles.

“We continue to be focused on providing the very best experience to the people on Twitter. We can confirm that they will be leaving Twitter for new opportunities. We are thankful for all of their hard work and leadership,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report that came out on Tuesday.

Recently, Twitter CEO Agrawal fired two key executives — revenue product lead Bruce Falck and head of product, Kayvon Beykpour.

A disappointed Beykpour said that Agrawal asked him to leave because he wants to “take the team in a different direction.”

Musk, who has now put the $44 billion Twitter deal on hold over the presence of fake/spammy accounts and wants Twitter to come clean on the actual number of bots, will hire a new CEO if he takes over.

New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr returns to Brisbane Heat for Women’s Big Bash League

0

Brisbane, May 18 New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr will return to Brisbane Heat for the next season of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) after missing last year’s tournament due to her break from the game to manage and focus on her mental health.

Leg-spinner Kerr has taken 31 wickets in 30 matches and made 204 runs with the bat since signing up for Brisbane in 2019 and will reunite with Australia left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen to form a formidable spin combination.

“We were so pleased to see Melie back smiling and enjoying cricket again and are really looking forward to having her join us for the WBBL. Her batting during the World Cup was impressive in spite of some challenging conditions and it will be great to see her continue to develop her skills further,” said head coach Ashley Noffke in a statement.

“We’re excited to have her back in the squad this summer and I think her experience and insights will be very valuable for the group. Our young players will really enjoy the chance to learn from her as they play alongside her,” added Noffke.

In the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand this year, Kerr scored 201 runs at an average of 33.50 and claimed nine wickets, averaging 31.77 in seven matches. I kept an eye on how they went last year and so I’m looking forward to coming back to Brisbane and having some fun with the Heat girls. The WBBL is an exciting tournament and I’m keen to make the most of the opportunity this summer,” said Kerr.
