IPL Turning Point: Delhi’s spin trio of Axar, Kuldeep, Lalit sink Punjab with slow show

0

Pushed into batting first, Punjab Kings were cruising on a pitch that saw a run-fest between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals play out on Monday. Mayank Agarwal, Punjab’s regular skipper, was making amends for missing out in the last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad by collecting four boundaries off Shardul Thakur in the first three overs.

At 33/0 in 3.3 overs, Punjab was well on their way to proving Simon Doull’s prediction of a score of 180-190 correct from the pre-match pitch report. But everything changed when Delhi Capitals’ skipper Rishabh Pant brought on Lalit Yadav’s off-spin, his sixth bowling option, in the fourth over.

During the mid-innings chat, Axar had said to the broadcasters that the over bowled by Lalit gave them signals that the pitch was sticky; the ball was stopping and gripping a bit, which meant that flamboyant stroke-play to make runs against the slower bowlers won’t be an easy task for Punjab’s aggressive style of batting.

“The wicket is a bit sticky and it’s holding up a bit, we figured that out in the powerplay itself when the spinner (Lalit) bowled the third over. He said that the ball was stopping a bit. When I bowled as well in the sixth over, the ball was gripping a bit.”

Before Axar came into the picture, Lalit provided the breakthrough for Delhi, breaking the 33-run opening stand as Shikhar Dhawan was strangled down the leg while trying to pull through the fine leg and Rishabh Pant grabbing an excellent catch.

Liam Livingstone, the lynchpin of Punjab’s batting, danced wildly down the pitch to loft straight down the ground against Axar. But the left-arm spinner had pulled his length back as Livingstone missed the ball completely. It spun away sharply from him and was stumped by Pant.

With Mustafizur Rahman and Khaleel Ahmed taking out Mayank Agarwal and Jonny Bairstow respectively, Delhi’s spinners were aided by the fact that the pacers were matching them toe-to-toe. Axar would take out another crucial wicket for Delhi as Jitesh Sharma shuffled across for a pre-mediated sweep but the ball hit him low on the pad, sneaking past the bat.

The third member of the spin show, Kuldeep Yadav, had been hit for some boundaries by Sharma. But after Sharma fell, Kuldeep was brought immediately for the final over, scalping the wickets of Kagiso Rabada and Nathan Ellis on successive deliveries.

While Rabada was cleaned through the gate with a googly, Ellis was undone by the tossed-up delivery coming from wide of the crease and drifted in nicely to go past the expansive drive to hit the stumps.

The spinners’ day out ended when Lalit forced Rahul Chahar to go for a slog-sweep on a flat delivery and the top edge was safely pouched by the deep backward square leg.

Axar finished with figures of 2/10 in four overs, with 13 dot balls at a miserly economy rate of 2.50. Kuldeep finished with figures of 2/24 in his four overs, with nine dot balls at an economy rate of six. Lalit bowled just the two overs but had figures of 2/11, with eight dot balls at an economy rate of 5.50.

“On a wicket like this, after one or two overs, I saw the ball was stopping a bit and I thought I should use more spin. I thought 150 would be a good enough score to stop them at,” was Rishabh Pant’s reasoning to bring spinners early in the game.

Clearly, Punjab had no answers to the questions posed by Delhi’s three spinners and sank spectacularly to end at 115. The meager total was not going to be enough on a day when Axar, Kuldeep, and Lalit made merry.

New versions of Omicron that may outpace BA.2 found

0

Scientists have found 21 viral offspring linked with BA.2 that may outpace the most successful subvariant of the Omicron variant so far.

BA.2 has been picking up mutations, sometimes shifting into sleeker and, incredibly, even faster versions of itself, media reported.

While most of the mutations look like underachievers, and of little consequence, two of these offshoots — BA.2.12.1 and BA.2.12 — have been fueling a rise in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in central New York.

And one of them, BA.2.12.1, is outpacing BA.2 in other regions, too, the report said.

According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BA.2.12.1 caused 19 percent of new Covid infections in the US last week, up from an estimated 11 percent of cases the week before.

The speed at which BA.2.12.1 is outpacing BA.2 is roughly as fast as BA.2 outcompeted its cousin BA.1, Trevor Bedford, an epidemiologist and genomic scientist at the University of Washington’s School of Public Health, was quoted as saying.

Though BA.2 is still very much around, it’s lost some ground. Last week, it caused an estimated 74 percent of Covid-19 cases, according to the CDC data, down from nearly 76 percent the week before.

Together, BA.2 and BA.2.12.1 accounted for an estimated 93 percent of new Covid cases in the US last week.

“BA.2.12.1 has increased rapidly in proportion in the US compared to other BA.2 sublineages,”, especially in the region that includes New York and New Jersey, CDC spokesperson Kristen Nordlund was quoted as saying.

Last week, the New York State Department of Health alerted residents to the new sublineages, warning that they were spreading about 25 percent faster than BA.2 and were causing Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations to increase, particularly in the central part of the state.

It urged New Yorkers to “act swiftly” to consider wearing masks, to get booster vaccine doses, to get tested if they had symptoms and to seek treatment if infected, the report said.

Officials are concerned about BA.2 offshoots because they have swapped pieces of their spike proteins at key locations called L452Q and S704L.

“And those mutations are allowing the virus to enter cells faster and also contributing to evading antibody responses that are generated from vaccination or infection,” said Andy Pekosz of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Two other Omicron sub-variants, BA.4 and BA.5, have begun to circulate at low levels in other parts of the world, including South Africa, Botswana, Germany, and Denmark. They also have mutations at 452, among others.

“What we really just don’t know right now is how much those mutations are going to be contributing to increased spread or increased disease severity,” Pekosz said. “That’s something that’s going to take some time for us to figure out.”

Sasikala to be grilled in Kodanad murder and heist case

A special team of the Tamil Nadu Police will be questioning AIADMK’s former interim General Secretary, V.K. Sasikala in the Kodanad murder and heist case on Thursday, officials said.

The 906-acre estate was jointly owned by late Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa and her aide Sasikala, and the murder and heist case took place on April 24, 2017, four months after the passing away of J. Jayalalithaa and the arrest of Sasikala.

According to the charge sheet, C. Kanagaraj, who was once the driver of Jayalalithaa, hatched a conspiracy to break open the Kodanad estate as he believed that huge money was stashed in the estate bungalow. On April 23, 2017, a gang of ten people, led by him, broke into the estate and killed guard, Om Bahadhur while another guard Krishna Thapa was beaten and tied.

Police sources said that Kanagaraj had convinced another accused Stayan that an amount of Rs 200 crore was stashed in the estate bungalow but the burglars could get only ten watches and a crystal replica of rhinoceros worth Rs 42,000.

Five days after the Kodanad estate heist, Kanagaraj was killed in a road accident on the Salem-Chennai highway in Attur. Another accused Sayan from Kerala also met with an accident on the same day but he escaped with injuries while his wife and daughter got killed.

In July 3, 2017, Dinesh Kumar, a computer operator at the estate, was found dead in his home leading to five deaths altogether.

Police filed a 300-page charge sheet in September 2017 against 11 people out of which only Kanagaraj was from Tamil Nadu, and the rest were from Kerala.

Sayan and another accused Manoj had given an interview to a journalist stating that the then Chief Minister, K. Palaniswami had ordered the break-in at the Kodanad estate to search for some important documents.

Three of the accused also moved to court seeking the interrogation of Palaniswami, Sasikala, the then Nilgiris Collector, and then district police chief.

AIADMK and Palaniswami had reacted strongly, accusing the DMK government of using police to settle scores.

With Sasikala’s interrogation slated for Thursday, the AIADMK camp is in jitters and the possibility of Palaniswami being called for quizzing by the sleuths is on high.

Manchester United win is great for confidence, says Fabinho

0

Liverpool’s midfielder Fabinho believes his side’s 4-0 win over Manchester United can provide the team added confidence in their hunt for the quadruple.

Liverpool is still in with a chance of the Quadruple having beaten Man City to reach the FA Cup final, with the Carabao Cup long secured and the Premier League and Champions League still in play.

Liverpool followed up their 5-0 victory at Old Trafford earlier in the season with another memorable display against their fierce rivals on Tuesday night.

Luis Diaz’s fifth-minute goal set them on their way and he was joined on the scoresheet by Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, whose brace took his season total to 30.

Fabinho felt there were multiple positives to take from the team’s work against United. “Now, we play just important games. Of course the three points is always important, but we want to play good football, we want to play our best football, to be on the highest level of intensity, play with quality on the ball because we have a lot of quality in this team,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It was, if not perfect, almost a perfect game. It was a big game for our fans as well, so it was important to put in a performance like this against a team like Man United. It’s really good for us and for confidence as well,” Fabinho said.

“It was a really good performance from everyone. Since the start of the game we have put the intensity we wanted to,” he said.

“We created a lot of chances. With the ball, we were patient, with a lot of quality. We recovered a lot of balls in the offensive part of the field – this is really important. Then I think 4-0 is [justified] for the game we played.”

‘It was during AIADMK rule…’: Stalin’s fierce attack on oppn party

In a no-holds-barred attack on the opposition AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on Wednesday said it was during the party’s rule that the Governor was attacked by a group led by four lawmakers and narrowly escaped.

Stalin also said it was during AIADMK rule only that the then Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan was chased from the airport to Taj Coromandel Hotel and the property was attacked.

Replying to the debate on the security provided to Governor R.N. Ravi, he said that there is no truth in the allegation that Ravi’s convoy was attacked with stones and sticks on Tuesday in Mayiladuthurai while on his way to the Dharmapuram Adheenam mutt.

Hitting out at the opposition party, he said it was during the AIADMK rule that then-Governor M.Channa Reddy’s car was stopped on the road in Dindigul on April 10, 1995, and a group led by four AIADMK lawmakers threw stones, eggs, and tomatoes.

Stalin said newspapers had reported that Channa Reddy escaped an attempt on his life.

He added that on April 26, 1995, a resolution was passed in the Assembly to recall the Reddy who was earlier attacked.

Stalin also recalled the attempts to attack BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on the Madras High Court premises and also the acid attack on IAS officer V.S. Chandralekha during the earlier AIADMK regime.

On Tuesday’s incident, he said that Ravi’s convoy had safely passed the spot where the protestors were assembled. The protestors threw their party flags at the police vehicles that were used to transport them after their arrest.

He also pointed out the letter by Ravi’s ADC saying that the Governor’s convoy passed unharmed.

According to Stalin, the police have filed a case against the protestors and given proper security to the Governor.

Another DC player tests positive for Covid-19 ahead of match against Punjab: Report

0

After Mitchell Marsh tested positive for Covid-19 on April 18, another Delhi Capitals overseas player got infected, hours ahead of their match against Punjab Kings at the Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday, says a report in ESPNCricinfo.

The latest positive result takes the tally of Covid-19 positive cases in the Delhi camp to six.

The report says that the unnamed overseas player had tested positive for Covid-19 after a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) was conducted on Wednesday morning. It added that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will organize another round of testing, which will decide whether Delhi can take the field against Punjab on Wednesday evening.

“It is understood that the organizers have kept open the option of rescheduling the match, which on Tuesday was shifted from Pune to Mumbai. The IPL has also asked the Capitals contingent to conduct another round of tests on the franchise’s personnel, and the fate of today’s match might be decided when those results are available. The Kings players, meanwhile, are understood to be leaving for the venue, which could suggest that the match will go ahead as scheduled,” said the report.

Earlier, on Tuesday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said that the match between Delhi and Punjab had been shifted from MCA Stadium in Pune to Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai to avoid any further incident due to an undetected case during a long-distance bus journey in a closed environment.

The change in venue was caused due to Marsh, physiotherapist Patrick Farhart, sports massage therapist Chetan Kumar, team doctor Dr. Abhijit Salvi, and social media content team member Akash Mane testing positive for Covid-19. Farhart was the first to test positive for Covid-19 on April 15, followed by Kumar on April 16. Then, on April 18, Marsh, Dr. Salvi, and Mane returned Covid-19 positive results.

“The Covid-positive cases are under isolation and medical observation. They will be tested on Day 6 and 7 and subject to both the tests being negative they will be re-integrated into the Delhi Capitals bio-secured bubble,” read Shah’s statement. Previously, Delhi Capitals on Monday confirmed that Marsh had tested positive for Covid-19 following which he had been admitted to a hospital.

As my father hugged me, I burst into tears: Ram Charan

Netflix says it will charge more for sharing account outside family

0

Popular video streaming platform Netflix has said that it will expand its test that charges members a higher price if they are engaged in account sharing with people outside their household.

The company first began testing the feature in March in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, but now said it plans to implement the solution in global markets, including the US, in around a year’s time, reports TechCrunch.

Netflix clarified it will need to continue to iterate on the feature for roughly a year or so, to make sure it gets the balance right in terms of how much extra to charge subscribers who have shared their Netflix accounts with other users outside their own household.

“Frankly, we have been working on this for about almost two years a little over a year ago, we started doing some light test launches that informed our thinking and helped us build the mechanisms that we’re deploying now,” Netflix Chief Product Officer Greg Peters was quoted as saying by the website.

“We just did the first big country tests, but it will take a while to work this out and to get that balance right,” Peters added.

Currently, Netflix’s Standard and Premium subscribers in its handful of test markets are being offered the option to add “sub-accounts” to their service for people they don’t live with.

Each sub-account will have its own profile and personalized recommendations — but they also have their own Netflix login and password.

This sets them up to become established members with their own accounts in the future. If they choose to make that move, their viewing history, watch list (“My List”), and personalized recommendations will transfer over to their own account with their own billing information.

Netflix had earlier said this solution does not rely on location-based data, like GPS. Instead, it is leveraging the same information it uses to provide its service today to its end users, including an IP address, device IDs, and other information about devices signed into the Netflix account across the household.

Through this method, Netflix can identify when there’s persistent sharing taking place outside a household, the report said.

Naidu turns 72, gears up for another poll battle

As he turned 72 on Wednesday, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is gearing up for another electoral battle in his long chequered career.

Nearly three years after suffering his worst-ever electoral defeat, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief appears to be down but not out as he looks to infuse new energy into the party for the 2024 poll battle.

Leading the charge against Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, the veteran leader aims to make another comeback to power.

Though facing perhaps the toughest challenge of his four-decade-long political career, Naidu continues to be the tallest opposition figure who can take on Jagan Mohan Reddy, a leader 22 years younger than him.

As the leader of the opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, he is leading from the front the fight against the ‘misrule’ of YSRCP. Backed by a strong cadre at the grassroots level, he is helming the TDP’s fight against the YSRCP government’s ‘corruption’, ‘anti-people policies’, and ‘atrocities’.

With two years to go for the polls and Jana Sena led by actor-politician Pawan Kalyan and BJP yet to have a strong presence on the ground, Naidu seems to be the only one who can give Jagan Mohan Reddy a run for his money.

On his 72nd birthday, Naidu said that he is working to restore the glory of the Telugu people. He visited Kanakadurga temple in Vijayawada, seeking blessings and strength to carry on what he calls the fight on behalf of the people.

Thanking people for celebrating his birthday, Naidu assured them that he would carry forward the party by working as per their expectations. Determined to be steadfast in this fight, he is confident of a victory.

Political observers say 2024 could be a do-or-die battle for him. If he makes a comeback as the chief minister, he can groom his son Nara Lokesh as his political successor but if he fails, it could well be the end of the road for him.

Naidu’s four-decade-long career saw his political pendulum swinging wildly from left to right. In 2019, he exercised even his last option — aligning with the Congress but this gamble could not save him.

He not only lost power in the state but became irrelevant in national politics as his friend-turned-rival Narendra Modi retained power at the Centre with a huge majority.

Desperate to stop Modi, Naidu was holding extensive deliberations with regional parties across the country to forge an anti-BJP alliance. He wanted to achieve what he did in 1996 when as the convenor of the United Front (UF) he brought together regional parties to prop up the government of the third alternative. In 1999, he donned a similar role for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

A shrewd politician, Naidu was also seen as a rank opportunist as he aligned with the BJP, apparently to ride on the Vajpayee wave. He succeeded in retaining power, which he got in 1995 after leading a revolt against his father-in-law and TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao.

Then known as the poster boy of new economic reforms, a reformist, and a tech-savvy leader, Naidu mastered the skills of doing business with any formation at the Centre, irrespective of its ideology.

After losing power to his bete noire Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) in 2004 following a record 9-year stint as Andhra Pradesh chief minister, Naidu admitted his priorities were lop-sided which led to the neglect of agriculture in the state.

So he promised a slew of freebies in the 2009 elections, but the people remained unconvinced and gave YSR a fresh mandate.

The emergence of Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate in 2014 offered Naidu a chance to revive his political fortunes.

He not only joined the NDA once again but by campaigning with Modi, he succeeded in storming to power in the truncated state of Andhra Pradesh, as people preferred him, apparently for his experience in developing Hyderabad as a tech hub.

As a leader who always enjoyed the role of a kingmaker and extracted his pound of flesh from the government at the Centre, Naidu was uncomfortable in the new dispensation where Modi had an absolute majority.

Though facing post-bifurcation challenges like lack of state capital and poor finances, he had no option, but to quietly accept whatever was doled out to the state.

However, it was when YSR’s son and the chief of the YSRCP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy started targetting him for his compromise over the Special Category Status (SCS) and Naidu realized how he was losing the ground to the opposition. In 2018, he pulled out of the NDA government accusing Modi of ‘betrayal’.

From a great admirer of Modi, Naidu soon turned into his worst critic and even joined hands with the Congress, his party’s sworn enemy of 35 years. This was Naidu’s biggest political misadventure.

His experiment ended in a disaster with the Congress-led United People’s Alliance (UPA) biting the dust.

Ironically, Naidu began his political career with the Congress party. At the age of 28, he was elected to Assembly from Chandragiri constituency in his native district Chittoor and became a minister in the state cabinet (1980-83)

When his father-in-law and popular actor N. T. Rama Rao floated TDP, Naidu was with the Congress and had even thrown a challenge at the former. The TDP wave in 1983 nearly wiped out Congress and Naidu too failed to be re-elected to the Assembly.

Later, NTR admitted Naidu into TDP and since then he never looked back. Making a modest beginning in NTR dominant TDP, he climbed to the position of party general secretary.

In 1995, a few months after NTR led TDP back to power with a landslide victory, Naidu staged a revolt against their father-in-law to become chief minister. NTR’s children backed Naidu as they were also unhappy over growing interference by his second wife Lakshmi Parvathi in administration and party affairs.

NTR, who accused Naidu of back-stabbing him, died of cardiac arrest in January 1996, dramatically changing the state’s political scene.

Since then Naidu has been heading TDP. He became the longest-serving chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh (1995-2004). A decade later when Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated to carve out Telangana as a new state, he made a new beginning as the first chief minister of the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh.

Instagram says it is removing ‘Recent’ tab for some users

0

Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram said that it is testing more recent and timely content in the ‘Top’ and ‘Reels’ tabs in hashtags and removing the ‘Recent’ tab.

The photo-sharing platform said in a tweet that it is removing the ‘Recent’ tab on hashtag pages for some users as part of a small test, TechCrunch reported on Tuesday.

“For a small group, we are testing more recent and timely content in ‘Top’ and ‘Reels’ tabs in hashtags and removing the ‘Recent’ tab. We want to see if this helps people connect with more interesting and relevant content on hashtags, while also keeping them across what is current,” the company wrote on the micro-blogging site.

Currently, when users select a hashtag, they are taken to a page where they can parse through the content that has been posted using that hashtag via three categories — Top, Recent, and Reels.

With this change, some users will now only see the ‘Top’ and ‘Reels’ tabs on hashtag pages, the report said.

There is also a “Spread the Word” button that let users share the hashtag page with their friends via a direct message (DM). The company said the feature will also make it easier to raise awareness for these causes through a “Create a Fundraiser” button that can be used to start raising money on behalf of a cause.

Recently, Instagram has expanded the ability to add product tags in Feed posts to everyone in the US. Earlier, the feature was available only to creators and brands and now it is available to all users in the US with public accounts.

Chennai hosted the first Chess Olympiad in 2012, but Olympiad for Disabled not to be held in India

0

Even as the Tamil Nadu government and All India Chess Federation (AICF) are gearing up to hold the 44th Chess Olympiad at Mahabalipuram near here in July-August, Chennai hosted the first chess Olympiad in 2012!

That was the 14th Blind Chess Olympiad which was held at the iconic Le Royal Meridien Hotel here.

And exactly a decade later India has got the mandate to host two chess Olympiads — 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 and Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2022!

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) had allotted India the main Chess Olympiad and the Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities to be held this year.

However, it is reliably learned the Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2022 will not be held in India.

Recalling the 2012 Olympiad for the Blind, Charudatta Jadhav, President, International Braille Chess Association (IBCA) and All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) told IANS: “That year Russia won the gold. The event was a grand success with about 30 teams participating. The Le Royal Meridien Hotel responded to our request and gave us a good rate.”

That year the Indian team stood fifth.

“We have a large banquet hall. The Olympiad was a prestigious event and we decided to have it on our property. The event went off very smoothly,” A. Sennimalai, Managing Director, Appu Hotels which owns Le Royal Meridien told IANS.

A FIDE official told IANS that the Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2022 will not be held in India.

“I have written to the FIDE Commission for Disabled enquiring whether the Olympiad for People with Disabilities will be held in India in 2022? If no, then when and where it is slated. If the event is not to be held, whether FIDE would allow three international teams — blind, deaf and dumb and physically handicapped — to participate in the main Olympiad to be held in Chennai as in the past,” Jadhav told in an interview.

Jadhav said the Olympiad for People with Disabilities was started by FIDE recently. As a result, three international teams of blind/deaf and dumb/physically disabled chess players were not allowed to participate in the main Olympiad.

PM launches Ayush Visa for medical tourists

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced the launch of a special category of Ayush visa for tourists visiting India for medical tourism or treatment.

He also said that a special hallmark type of branding for Ayush products will be initiated by the Ministry of Ayush to identify and give recognition to the high-quality products.

Prime Minister Modi was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit 2022 at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

“India is a very attractive destination for medical tourism. We have been witness to the rise in Kerala’s tourism due to its medical industry. This model can also be replicated across the nation, where Ayurveda, Yunani, and Siddha forms of traditional medicine and wellness centres can be very popular. Our government has decided to set up a special Visa category to ease the Visa process for foreign travelers wishing to avail medical treatment in India and are medical tourists,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi also announced that just like the BSI and ISI marks, a special Ayush mark will be created to mark the highest quality Ayush products. “This will give the global consumers a recognized and high quality assured Ayush products,” the PM said.

He also announced the setting up of an Ayush Park where its products will be manufactured. “The Park will give a new direction to Ayush products manufacturing in India,” he stated.

The Summit inauguration was attended by the Director-General Dr. Tedros Gebreyesus of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated various services and applications related to Ayush products and services. A number of agreements were also signed for its research and development.

MCG to host Brazil-Argentina football friendly in June

0

The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host one of the biggest football clashes when Brazil and Argentina play a friendly in June in preparation for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Brazil and Argentina will be returning to the MCG, having last faced off at the venue in 2017 when Lionel Messi’s Argentina had defeated their South American rivals 1-0 in front of 95,569 fans.

A statement on the MCG’s homepage said on Wednesday, “Football fans in Melbourne and across Australia will witness the astonishing skills of football giants, Brazil and Argentina live when the two teams face off for Superclasico 2022 at the MCG on June 11.”

Recollecting the 2017 clash between the two footballing giants, MCG said, that fans were then treated to the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Paulo Dybala, and Gabriel Jesus across the two South American powerhouses, as the MCG recorded its largest crowd for a football match, eclipsing the Liverpool FC and Melbourne Victory friendly back in 2013.

Superclasico was created in 2011 as a two-game series between both nations but was altered in 2014 to a one-off match at a neutral venue with previous matches played in front of record crowds.

International matches played in a World Cup year are vital to the preparation of qualifying teams, and Superclasico organisers are expecting both Brazil (1st in the FIFA world rankings) and Argentina (4th in the FIFA world rankings) to field their strongest available teams.

“To have two of the most successful football teams in the world return to the MCG to continue their longstanding rivalry reinforces our position as one of the world’s great sporting cities and Australia’s event capital,” Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula, said on Wednesday.

“We are delighted to welcome two footballing giants back to the MCG to dazzle Melbourne and Australian football and general sports fans, and in a World Cup year no less,” said Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive, Stuart Fox.

Auto, taxi, bus fares revised in Kerala

0

The Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala on Wednesday gave its nod for a hike in auto, taxi, and bus fares, which will come into effect from May 1.

Minimum auto fare has been raised from Rs 25 to Rs 30, while the taxi fares have been increased to Rs 200 and the minimum bus fares have gone up from Rs 8 to Rs 10.

Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation (KSPBOF) has been up in arms demanding an increase in the minimum fare. It was after an assurance from Chief Minister Vijayan, last month, that they called off their protest.

Even though the minimum bus fare demanded was Rs 12, it was not accepted.

The last time the bus fare was revised was in 2018 when it was raised by Re one to Rs 8 and after that despite numerous demands, it was turned down.

The KSPBOF’s demand to raise the student fare to Rs 6 has not become a reality as the government is waiting for a report to this effect from a committee.

There are 12,500 private buses that operate in Kerala and are the backbone of the daily travel of the common man as the state-run State Road Transport Corporation has around 6,500 buses only.

The bus operators have been in dire straits on account of the high operating costs. High diesel prices, the inability to make payments to bus workers, and the cost of servicing buses as other reasons which have made they’re going through.

In February, it was big news when a few members of the Contract Carriage Owners Association
(CCOA) decided to sell their luxury buses and priced them at Rs 45 for a kilogram.

New ECB chief Rob Key holds talks with Anderson, Broad on possible return: Report

The new managing director of England men’s cricket Rob Key has held talks with pace bowling stalwarts Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad over their possible Test recall and is also expected to get in touch with all-rounder Ben Stokes and gather his views about captaincy.

While Anderson and Broad — the most successful England pacers ever — have declared their intention to return to the side after being axed ahead of the three-Test series in the Caribbean, Stokes has emerged as the likely candidate for the post of England captain after Joe Root stepped down recently following a five-year stint of leading the side.

England has a grueling summer Test season beginning with the three-Test series against New Zealand from June 2 and Anderson and Broad could play a vital role in the series if selected.

A report in dailymail.co.uk said on Wednesday that it understood that Key had contacted the two pacers who were “controversially axed for the 1-0 defeat by West Indies last month before he was officially unveiled as the successor to Ashley Giles”.

The pace bowling stalwarts have shared between them a mindboggling 1,177 Test wickets and Key “checked their availability for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 2”, the report said.

Key’s stance on the two pace bowlers is in contrast to Andrew Strauss, who held the role of ECB managing director on an interim basis after the departure of Ashley Giles. Giles left the position after three years, following the debacle of the Ashes, where England lost 4-0 away in Australia.

The reports also said that Key will likely get in touch with England vice-captain Stokes this week.
