IPL 2022: Mental strain of leading India may be taking toll on Rohit Sharma, says Graeme Smith

0

The mental strain of captaining India in all formats may be taking a toll on Rohit Sharma in IPL 2022, feels former South Africa captain Graeme Smith.

In IPL 2022, Sharma has not been at his best with the bat as an opener, amassing just 80 runs in four matches with an average of 20. In terms of captaincy, Mumbai Indians have had to face four losses in as many matches and now need to defeat Punjab Kings at MCA Stadium on Wednesday to end their winless run in the tournament.

IPL 2022 is also the first season Sharma is captaining Mumbai after taking over as the India skipper across all formats.

“Rohit is the energy at the top of the order. Gets them off to a start, and sets up the game that allows everyone else to play. When he is scoring runs MI is going to win a lot of the time. This is the first tournament he is captaining MI since becoming India’s white-ball captain. Does that mental strain take a toll on the IPL? It’s something to consider,” Smith was quoted as saying by cricket.com.

Smith, currently commentating in IPL, thinks if Sharma finds form, then it makes for a very powerful Mumbai batting line-up. “He’s just such a key player. If you look at the line-up, Rohit, an outstanding player, hasn’t found form. You’ve got Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav injured for a couple of games. He has now come in and is looking good and then Pollard as the power finisher. You’ve got Brevis there but he’s a young man. That’s a very strong batting line-up.”

In Mumbai’s all four losses, the batting had some brilliant individual performances but didn’t click as a unit. The same script has panned out for the bowling attack, who have been far from convincing. Smith has called for the inclusion of West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen, who bowls left-arm spin apart from England’s left-arm pacer Tymal Mills.

“I’ve got for Tymal Mills to try and show some support to Bumrah. I’ve gone for Fabian Allen as well. My reason for that Punjab has a largely right-handed batting line-up and I like the fact he can spin the ball away from them and that will provide Rohit Sharma with another useful option and lengthens the batting line-up slightly.”

Smith signed off by saying that he would still stick with young Brevis and experienced Pollard in the batting line-up. “I’ve picked Brevis at No. 3 or 4, depending on where Suryakumar Yadav is going to bat, just because it’s his third game and deserves a bit of opportunity. I’ve stuck with Pollard. He’s shown glimpses of his power and form. Whether he should come up slightly in the order is another question.”

Vettori appointed Birmingham Phoenix men’s head coach in The Hundred

0

Daniel Vettori has been appointed as the head coach of the Birmingham Phoenix men’s team in The Hundred. Vettori’s appointment comes after Andrew McDonald was named as the new head coach of Australia’s men’s side.

Vettori had coached the franchise on an interim basis to become runners-up in the inaugural edition of The Hundred at Lord’s last year as McDonald couldn’t come to England due to travel issues caused by Covid-19.

“I absolutely loved my time working with the Birmingham Phoenix squad as Head Coach last summer, so taking on the role on a permanent basis was a very easy decision. We made great strides in the first season and all coaches and players loved seeing the tournament develop, and we had such great support every time that we took to the field at Edgbaston,” said Vettori during his appointment.

Since his retirement from the game after the 2015 Men’s Cricket World Cup, the former left-arm spinner has had coaching stints in franchise cricket with Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League and Middlesex in the Vitality T20 Blast.

In international cricket, he was the spin bowling coach of Bangladesh from 2019 to 2021 and was recently the spin consultant for Australia’s white-ball series in Pakistan when McDonald was the interim head coach of the side.

“However, we want to go one better. It’s a tough competition, but we’ve retained well and recruited some excellent players through the draft. We look an even stronger outfit than in 2021 and hopefully, we can continue to entertain the Birmingham Phoenix fans who get behind us,” added the 43-year-old.

In the recent draft of The Hundred, Birmingham signed up Australia wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade and his team-mate, pacer Kane Richardson apart from England pacers Olly Stone and Matthew Fisher.

“Dan has developed a wealth of coaching experience in premier short-form tournaments around the world. He was appointed interim Head Coach at relatively short notice last year and did an excellent job in helping the men’s team reach the first-ever final of The Hundred, whilst helping the team play an incredibly exciting brand of cricket.

“We were very much aware that Andrew would be an outstanding candidate for the Australia role and we are grateful to Dan for supporting our plans to make an immediate appointment,” said Birmingham Phoenix General Manager Craig Flindall.

“Whilst we’re sorry that Andrew won’t coach during The Hundred, he has played an integral role in developing the make-up of our squad over the last two years and in shaping our style of play. He has also been a pleasure to work with and everyone within the Birmingham Phoenix family wishes him the very best in his new role,” added Flindall.

The Hundred men’s competition begins on August 3 with defending champions Southern Brave hosting Welsh Fire at Rose Bowl in Southampton. Birmingham will start their campaign against Trent Rockets on August 6 at Trent Bridge.

UAE partners with NASA on Mars missions

0

The United Arab Emirates has partnered with US space agency NASA on a Mars mission to boost scientific collaborations on the Red Planet.

The country’s first interplanetary exploration Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) has finalized a science data analysis collaboration initiative with NASA’s MAVEN Mars Mission, to enhance scientific returns from both spacecraft – currently orbiting Mars and observing the Red Planet’s atmosphere.

The partnership will enable the sharing and collaborative analysis of data and observations made by the EMM’s Hope Probe and NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) project. It will also pave the way toward greater scientific collaboration and data exchange between the two missions.

MAVEN completed its Mars orbit insertion in 2014. Its mission is to investigate the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Mars, offering an insight into how the planet’s climate has changed over time.

The Hope Probe, which entered Mars orbit on February 9, last year, is studying the relationship between the upper layer and lower regions of the Martian atmosphere, giving the international science community full access to a holistic view of the planet’s atmosphere at different times of the day, through different seasons.

“EMM science complements MAVEN and the Hope probe was designed to answer scientific objectives aligned directly with MEPAG goals. Its observations were always designed to provide new insights that weren’t possible from past Mars missions,” said Omran Sharaf, Project Director of the Emirates Mars Mission, in a statement.

“Now, by combining the two datasets from the EMM and MAVEN missions and analyzing the results together, we can build a powerful response to many fundamental questions we have about Mars and the evolution and dynamics of its atmosphere,” he added.

EMM was designed to answer a number of objectives defined by the global grouping of Mars scientists and researchers, MEPAG – the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group.

Following on from MAVEN and other previous missions, Hope set out to measure the global, diurnal and seasonal response of the Martian atmosphere to solar forcing; the atmospheric conditions relating to the rate of atmospheric escape a” particularly of hydrogen and oxygen and the temporal and spatial behavior of Mars’ exosphere.

With early results showing exciting observations of Mars’ discrete aurora and additional bandwidth and resources available to encompass additional observations, further measurements of auroral phenomena have been brought into the mission’s goals, extending its capabilities beyond Hope’s planned goals.

“MAVEN and EMM are each exploring different aspects of the Martian atmosphere and upper-atmosphere system. Combined, we will have a much better understanding of the coupling between the two and the influence of the lower atmosphere on escape to space of gas from the upper atmosphere,” said Shannon Curry, a Research scientist in planetary sciences at the University of California, Berkeley and MAVEN Principal Investigator.

K’taka Cong seeks sacking of Minister Eshwarappa over contractor’s suicide

A Karnataka Congress delegation on Wednesday met Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot here and submitted a memorandum to sack Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister K.S. Eshwarappa from the cabinet and ensure his immediate arrest over contractor Santhosh K. Patil’s suicide.

The delegation comprised Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and the state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar demanded that minister Eshwarappa be arrested immediately. They also pressed for his sacking from the cabinet.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah alleged that Minister Eshwarappa had asked for 40 percent commission from the diseased contractor. That means he had to pay Rs 1.40 crore from the total amount of Rs 4 crore. How could a small contractor pay a huge amount? Never in history, Karnataka has seen such a corrupt government, he added.

Shivakumar stated that the incident is a blot in the history of the state and Eshwarappa should be arrested. “We will not stop here. If at all there is an order prohibiting agitations in Bengaluru, we will continue to protest on the issue even if we are punished for it,” he said.

Siddaramaiah further stated that the deceased Santosh Patil had gone to Udupi and tried to meet Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. When he was not able to meet him, he had sent a WhatsApp message to friends alleging directly that Minister Eshwarappa is responsible for his death and committed suicide.

This should be considered a death note and Minister Eshwarappa should be immediately arrested. The complainant in the case the brother of the deceased has also stated that Minister Eshwarappa is directly responsible for the death, he explained.

This is a case that comes under The Prevention of Corruption Act. The case has to be lodged under Section 13 of this action against the minister. There is a provision in the law to imprison the accused Eshwarappa for 10 years for abetting the suicide and it is a non-bailable offense. The law is equal for all, Siddaramaiah maintained.

“The Governor has assured us that he would speak to Chief Minister Bommai in this regard. Eshwarappa is not beyond the law. Action should be initiated against him if the government has any respect. It should arrest Eshwarappa and sack him from the cabinet immediately,” Siddaramaiah reiterated.

Santhosh K. Patil, a contractor committed suicide after consuming poison in Udupi. He had sent messages on Whatsapp holding Minister Eshwarappa directly responsible for his death. Police have lodged an FIR against Eshwarappa and booked him under abetment to suicide charge.

Rakul on working with Big B, Ajay Devgn: I’m not someone who gets intimidated

Actress Rakul Preet Singh, who is gearing up for the release of the film ‘Runway 34’, has talked about working with two big-screen legends — Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn.

She says she was not intimidated by working with the two superstars instead she was excited to share the screen with them.

Talking about if she felt intimidated to work with Amitabh and Ajay in the frame, Rakul in a conversation with an interview said: “I am not someone who gets intimidated. I feel that if at the moment what you have worked for all your life you give in to intimidation then you have lost the plot.

“I am someone who gets excited. I get that happy energy that I’ll be able to shoot with them and share screen space with Amitji… So, the tougher it is the more kick I get. The more challenging it is the more excited I get. So, I behave like that.”

This is not the first time for Rakul to work with Ajay, who has also directed ‘Runway 34’. She has previously shared screen space with him in ‘De De Pyaar De’ and will next be seen with him in ‘Thank God.

“I think Ajay sir from Day 1 has been very approachable as a person. Very welcoming as a co-star. I remember meeting him for the first time on ‘De De Pyaar De’… I was nervous at that point. He is Ajay Devgn.”

“His first film had come out when I was born so it was like you have grown up watching sir and admired him for what he is as a person but he is very warm and he respects a fellow actor.”

The film is reportedly inspired by the true events of the Jet Airways Doha to Kochi flight that had a narrow escape in August 2015, after facing difficulties landing at the Cochin International Airport due to bad weather and unclear visibility at 5:45 in the morning.

Was it tough shooting in a small space?

“We shot in a real cockpit. We didn’t make a set of it. We got a real simulator… The panel that you see or every button that you see is real. So whatever we were pressing was real… We got trained on it. It was tough to shoot in that confined space because Ajay Devgn (sir) had put seven cameras in that cockpit which is very small. That was a challenge for him also as a director.”

The actress talked about her character Captain Tanya. She says that even though it was a tough film and role, it was not very difficult to get out of the intensity of it.

“I am as a person in general someone who detaches as soon as I have done shooting and that I do constantly do every day because we shoot long hours and maybe in a month at a stretch and you don’t get into the loop of the emotions of the character is feeling. So, I as an actor like to do things after pack-up that make me feel normal. The girl that Rakul is.”

She added: “I won’t say difficult but I would say challenging because we are doing something that has not been seen in Indian films before. To create that tension and fear in a small cockpit. Thinking that there is turbulence and reacting that way, of course, it was a lot of toll. But I think that is what gives you the kick.

Directed by Ajay Devgn, ‘Runway 34’ is produced by Ajay Devgn Films and is co-produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Vikrant Sharma, Sandeep Harish Kewlani, Tarlok Singh Jethi, Hasnain Husaini, and Jay Kanujia.

The film, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Rakul Preet Singh, Boman Irani, Aakanksha Singh, and Angira Dhar, is set to hit theatres on April 29, where it will clash with Tiger Shroff and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer ‘Heropanti 2’.

IPL 2022: Will DK’s RCB showing revive his India T20 World Cup dreams?

0

Dinesh Karthik’s role as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) could pitchfork the 36-year-old wicketkeeper-batter into India’s reckoning as the team under Rohit Sharma looks to rebuild for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Former England captain Nick Knight said as much when he commented that he sees in Karthik a cricketer who can perform the job of a finisher in this year’s T20 World Cup if he continues to finish matches for his Bengaluru franchise in IPL 2022.

In IPL 2022, Karthik has been a critical finisher for RCB, making 131 runs and averaging the same number with a strike rate of 218.33, especially in matches against Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals.

Though Bangalore fell short of the chase by 23 runs against Chennai Super Kings at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday, they were still in reckoning to hunt down 217 despite losing eight wickets, thanks to Dinesh Karthik’s quick-fire 34 off 14 balls, laced with two fours and three sixes at a strike-rate of 242.86.

But his dismissal in the 18th over off Dwayne Bravo effectively sealed the fate of the match for Chennai. Karthik, who has made many comebacks to the Indian side since his debut in 2004, last played international cricket during the 2019 Men’s Cricket World Cup and has been out of the set-up post-India’s exit from the semifinals of the mega event.

“DK is a fantastic fella. He did work with us during the English summer (India’s Tour of England in 2021). As someone who knows him, I’m really feasting and enjoying what he is doing. The one thing we came across when he met him was how much he loves the game. I think he is 36 and he’s not thinking about retirement. He is absolutely loving every minute. If he can keep finishing games like this, there might be a role for him at the World T20,” Knight was quoted as saying by cricket.com.

Knight feels if CSK had got a low score, many wouldn’t have talked about the bowling performance of Sri Lanka off-spinner Mahesh Theekshana. Picked by Rs 70 lakh in the IPL Mega Auction in February this year, Theekshana finally got his moment to shine in IPL 2022 by picking 4/33 in his four overs.

Theekshana proved to be a vital factor in derailing Bangalore’s chase of 217 by taking out openers Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat in power-play. He then came back in the later stages to dismiss Shahbaz Ahmed and Suyash Prabhudessai to keep Chennai on course for a 23-run win.

“It was a fantastic night for him. If CSK were blown away for 130, 140, or maybe 150, we won’t be talking about Theekshana. Nothing to take away from the spinners, but the dismissals mystery spinners get is when the batsmen are coming at you, under pressure.”

“Last game he bowled four overs with no wickets and he didn’t bowl any good or any worse today. When you don’t have runs on the board, it’s not so straightforward for these guys. It’s the same with Jadeja. It’s the game situation that brings spinners in a bit more,” observed Knight, a former left-handed batter.

Theekshana’s early strikes along with left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary and captain Ravindra Jadeja taking out Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell respectively meant Bangalore never had the strong foundation to chase 217 successfully, something which Knight firmly believed in.

“On a surface like today (Tuesday), I thought the conditions were even. The powerplay was crucial and one of your top four has to set that up (chasing 200 plus) and guys in the middle can pick that up. That was the problem for RCB.”

Thalapathy Vijay finally speaks out about his son’s debut

Tamil actor Vijay, whose much-anticipated film ‘Beast’ was released on Wednesday, recently gave a rare interview.

His rare appearance is one of the most talked-about aspects of the interview, while Vijay’s ice-breaker on his son Sanjay’s debut is another hot topic right now.

While the entire Tamil film industry is waiting for Thalapathy Vijay’s son Sanjay to make his debut, Vijay has stated that he has no idea what his son is thinking.

In response to a question about his son Sanjay’s Kollywood debut, the ‘Kaththi’ actor stated that he is unsure about Sanjay’s decision, but he will never force or taunt his son about his choices.

He went on to say that ‘Premam’ director Alphonse Puthren once approached him to narrate a story. Vijay initially assumed it was for him, but later realized it was for his son.

Vijay said, “However, Sanjay smoothly declined Alphonse’s offer saying that he needs time to enter the industry. Meanwhile, I liked the story though”.

The interview, on the other hand, shed light on various aspects of Vijay’s film career that he had never discussed openly.

RBI likely to get quite perturbed with inflation above 6% in three quarters

0

With inflation likely to exceed 6 percent for three consecutive quarters, especially if energy prices remain elevated, the RBI is likely to get quite perturbed, Emkay Global Financial Services said in a report.

With higher food price pressure in the near term (summer effect, international prices, higher transport cost, supply chains) and persistent input cost pressure in the non-food segment, it now sees inflation crossing 6 percent in FY23.

The March ’22 print strengthens rate hike expectations in June ’22. We maintain that FY23 could see a rate hike of up to 100bps. The terminal rate may go a tad higher from 5.25 percent, with the RBI now showing its intent to keep real rates neutral, the report said.

March ’22 inflation surged to near 7 per cent, reflecting a broad-based increase in food and non-food inflation. Perishable food items seem to have been hurt by higher transportation and fuel costs. We are unlikely to see any relief in food prices in the near term, as supply-chain price pressure and summer months further weigh-in, the report added.

Core inflation at 6.6 percent depicted the persistence of input cost pressure, which has started to percolate to output prices.

The Mar’22 inflation print exceeded the RBI’s target range materially, and the next two quarters are also likely to exceed 6 percent, which could pressure the RBI to act sooner than later. We are tracking April ’22 inflation at 7.2 percent, albeit peaking, assuming pump prices stabilize ahead. With food prices looking high in the near term (summer effect, international prices, higher transport cost, supply chains) and persistent input cost pressure in the non-food segment, we now see inflation crossing 6 percent in FY23.

The RBI reckoned that inflation has again taken precedence over growth in its reaction function. With inflation realities worsening, a June hike is likely (with or without stout and formal stance change). FY23 could see rates go up by 100bps. The terminal rate may be a tad higher than 5.25 percent, with the RBI now showing its intent to keep real rates neutral.

K’taka contractor suicide: Cong to meet Guv; BJP seeks report

The Karnataka Congress has decided to intensify agitation against the ruling BJP government in connection with the suicide case of a contractor and BJP worker, Santhosh K. Patil.

The delegation of top Congress leaders, including party General Secretary and state in-charge Randeep Surjewala, is meeting Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Wednesday demanding the termination of Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj K.S. Eshwarappa.

The delegation will also demand to lodge corruption and murder charges against Minister Eshwarappa and further stress his immediate arrest. Along with Surjewala, state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, Opposition leader in Legislative Council B.K. Hariprasad, Campaign Committee Chairman M.B. Patil, and others would meet the Governor and submit a memorandum in this regard.

Santhosh K. Patil, a contractor from Belagavi had stated in his message to the mediapersons that “he was committing suicide as Minister Eshwarappa was not releasing funds for Rs 4 core worth projects that he had executed. He also said that he was being asked to give 40 percent cuts to him.” Patil’s body was recovered from Udupi lodge later on Tuesday.

The Congress since Tuesday launched protests against the government demanding the sacking of Minister Eshwarappa. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had lodged a police complaint against him in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, the BJP high command has sought a report from its state unit in connection with the suicide case.

The development has proved to be a setback for the ruling BJP which has been riding high on the Hindutva agenda in the state for quite some time. Congress party, which was neutral on a series of issues of communal polarization and was on a fix, has come out aggressively on the issue. The deceased Santhosh had earlier written letters to the top central BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 40 percent commission demand by Minister Eshwarappa.

Sources in Congress said that the party has decided to raise the issue all across the state and at the national level. They also said the party would question Prime Minister Modi, who charged the erstwhile government of Siddaramaiah as a ’10 percent commission government’.

Twitter acquires OpenBack to make push notifications better

Twitter has acquired OpenBack, a Dublin-based push notifications company, for an undisclosed sum as the micro-blogging platform aims to make notifications timely, relevant, and engaging.

In a tweet thread, Jay Sullivan who is Twitter’s head of consumer product said that OpenBack offers “device-side control of push notifications”.

“The best push notifications bring people to the conversations they care about on Twitter. But irrelevant notifications are a distraction. With millions of people visiting Twitter via notifications every day, we want them to be timely, relevant, and engaging,” he said late on Tuesday.

“OpenBack and their talented team joining Twitter will help us improve our ability to deliver the right notifications at the right time, in a way that puts people’s privacy first,” Sullivan added.

OpenBack is a mobile engagement platform that helps make apps more engaging.

Founded in 2015, OpenBack makes it easier for mobile apps to process data on-device without needing to go through a third-party server, unlike conventional push notification providers.

OpenBack CEO David Shackleton said in a tweet that they tried to “make push notifications truly user first for billions of people in a new way, and this opportunity to work with @Twitter fulfills that in so many ways more than we ever imagined”.

Champions League shock as clinical Villarreal eliminate Bayern Munich

0

A late equalizer from substitute Samuel Chukwueze helped Villarreal draw 1-1 with Bayern Munich and book the semifinals after moving 2-1 on aggregate in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

The German giants started highly motivated, knowing that they had to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, while Villarreal defended deep and lurked for their counterattack opportunities.

Bayern controlled the proceedings on the pitch but lacked accuracy in front of the target as only Jamal Musiala’s header forced Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli into action once at the half-hour mark, Xinhua reports. The German champions lived dangerously as the visitors from Spain were a menace on a fast break and Gerard Moreno sent the first warning before the break after rattling the side netting from a tight angle.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men came out with their guns blazing after the restart as Dayot Upamecano pulled over the target from a promising position before Robert Lewandowski eventually opened the scoring after slotting home a loose ball from the edge of the box in the 52nd minute.

Even though the Bavarians gained momentum, they had to wait until the 72nd minute to produce their next chance as unmarked Thomas Muller headed narrowly wide from a central position.

Villarreal’s counterattack strategy paid off in the closing stages as Gerard Moreno’s pass into the path allowed Chukwueze to stun Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from close range against the run of the game in the 88th minute.

“We lost this game in the first leg. We played very well today. We had a golden chance in the first half, and we should have scored another goal in the second half. Villarreal defended very well, and we got caught flatfooted as we pressed for the winner,” said Bayern coach Nagelsmann.

“It’s unbelievable, it’s taken a lot of hard work. We have suffered a lot in both games, but to be in the semifinals is great for Villarreal,” said Villarreal captain Raul Albiol.

IPL 2022: Theekshana, Jadeja help CSK beat RCB by 23 runs for first win of season

0

Superlative bowling performance by Mahesh Theekshana (4/33) and skipper Ravindra Jadeja (3/39) after brilliant fighting knocks by Shivam Dube (95 not out) and Robin Uthappa (88) helped to defend champions Chennai Super Kings overcome Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs for their first win in IPL 2022 at the D.Y Patil Stadium here on Tuesday.

Left-arm spinner Theekshana sent back RCB skipper Faf du Plessis for 8 and fellow opener Anuj Rawat for 12 while pacer Mukesh Choudhary got former skipper Virat Kohli out for one as RCB slumped to 42/3 from which they did not recover. Theekshana returned back for his second spell and sent back Shahbaz Ahmed (41) and Suyash Prabhudessai (34) to complete his four wickets as RCB, chasing a target of 217, was restricted to 193/9 in 20 overs.

The heroics of the Chennai Super Kings’ bowlers came after sensational counter-attacking half-centuries by Shivam Dube (95 not out off 46) and Robin Uthappa (88 off 50) propelled them to a mammoth 216/4 after RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first.

CSK were in a spot of bother at 36-2 after 6.4 overs but Uthappa and Dube took RCB bowlers to the cleaners and stitched a whopping 165 runs off just 74 balls for the third wicket, helping the team post a big total, which they eventually defended successfully for their first win in five matches.

Brief scores:

Chennai Super Kings 216/4 in 20 overs (Shivam Dube 95 not out, Robin Uthappa 88; Wanindu Hasaranga 2/35, Josh Hazlewood 1/33) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 193/9 in 20 overs (Shahbaz Ahmed 41, Suyash Prabhudessai 34, Dinesh Karthik 34; Mahesh Theekshana 4/33, Ravindra Jadeja 3/39).

New Omicron BA.4 & BA.5 sub-variants detected in Africa, Europe

South African scientists have detected two new sub-variants of the highly contagious Omicron variant – BA.4 and BA.5.

According to Tulio de Oliveira, Director of the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI), South Africa, the sub-variants have been detected in South Africa, Botswana, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, and the UK.

Although “early indications show these new sub-lineages are increasing as a share of genomically confirmed cases in South Africa”, there is, however, “no cause for alarm as no major spike in cases, admissions or deaths” are seen in the country, de Oliveira shared in a series of tweets.

“The complex immunity landscape in South Africa, with high population immunity, is probably one of the main causes of the low infections, hospitalization, and deaths since the Delta and Omicron BA.1 wave,” he said.

Incidentally, South Africa and Botswana were also the first to report on Omicron in November last year. South Africa was also the first country to be hit by the super mutant and vaccine evading variant of concern, before it became a global wave.

BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants are also on the radar of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The global health agency said it had begun tracking the two sub-variants because of their “additional mutations that need to be further studied to understand their impact on immune escape potential”.

Globally, only a few dozen cases of BA.4 and BA.5 have been reported to open access database GISAID. The earliest BA.4 sample reported to GISAID was from South Africa, with a sample collection date of January 10, 2022, the Independent.co.uk reported.

However, the accumulation of genomes and geographic spread is more recent, suggesting “that the variant is transmitting successfully”, said the UK Health Security Agency in its latest report.

Both BA.4 and BA.5 have also been added to the UK agency’s monitoring list. One case each of BA.4 has already been detected in Scotland and England, up to March 30, according to the UKHSA.

The health officials said there were “potentially biologically significant mutations” in the two variants, the report said.

In his thread of tweets, de Oliveira explained that BA.4 and BA.5 share a similar spike profile as BA.2, except for additional mutations: 69-70del, L452R, F486V.

But “the good news is that BA.4 and BA.5 (like BA.1) can be identified by a proxy marker of SGTF using the Thermo Fisher qPCR assay”, de Oliveira said.

Although BA.4/BA.5 has many shared mutations with the other Omicron lineages, it also has some differences. The impact of differences on virus phenotype needs to be determined, de Oliveira said, adding that the work is underway to characterize them.

Moreover, the researcher also found differences between the sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5. “BA.4 and BA.5 differ from each other by three amino acid mutations outside the spike protein,” he explained.

The impact of differences on virus phenotype needs to be determined, de Oliveira said, adding that the work is underway to characterize them.

“Vaccination remains the key intervention to protect against severe disease, hospitalization, and death from all known variants, a he said.

Victoria confirmed as host for 2026 Commonwealth Games, to be held in March in five cities

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will be held in five cities in the Victoria state of Australia in March 2026, the Commonwealth Games Federation (GCF) has confirmed.

The host city contract was signed in Victoria on Monday.

“In what will be a first-ever predominantly regional Commonwealth Games, Victoria 2026 will be staged in March 2026 across multiple cities and regional hubs including Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Gippsland. The Opening Ceremony will take place at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground,” the GCF informed in a release.

The announcement follows a successful exclusive dialogue period between the GCF, Commonwealth Games Australia (CGAus) and Victoria, where an exciting proposal to stage the major multi-sport competition across the State was agreed upon.

The proposal capitalises on the 2026/30 Strategic Roadmap, which provides renewed flexibility to be innovative and creative in delivering the Games, the CGF said.

CGF President Dame Louise Martin said, “The Commonwealth Games Federation is absolutely delighted to award the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria. Commonwealth Games Australia and the Victorian Government have set out a bold and innovative vision for hosting our major multi-sport event. In Victoria, we believe we have found the perfect partner for the next stage of our journey.

“This is a very special moment for the Commonwealth Sports Family and on behalf of the entire Movement, I would like to congratulate Commonwealth Games Australia and Victoria on their successful Games submission. We now look forward to a bright future as we work together to stage a Commonwealth Games like no other,” she said.

On the occasion, Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews said, “It’s a great honor to have Victoria chosen as the host venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games — we can’t wait to welcome the world to our state.”

“The Commonwealth Games in regional Victoria is great for jobs, hospitality and our economy,” he added.

“Australia has staged the Commonwealth Games on five occasions, with Victoria playing host to the Melbourne 2006 Games; widely considered one of the most successful editions of the event in history. The country has also staged the Games in Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982, and most recently Gold Coast in 2018. Victoria has also hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo in 2004,” he added.

Victoria has a strong track record for staging high-profile sporting competitions including The Australian Open tennis grand slam, the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cricket Ground is a major cricket venue in Australia and hosts international and domestic matches regularly.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be staged in Birmingham, England from July 28 to August 8.

Where The Legend Began: Rajamouli visits Komaram Bheem’s native place Asifabad

Director S.S. Rajamouli on Tuesday visited the native town of Gond hero Komaram Bheem whose life was depicted by Jr NTR in the blockbuster ‘RRR’.

Rajamouli, who attended the screening of ‘RRR’ at Picturetime theatre, also interacted with the people there.

Rajamouli, who spoke at the event, said, “I am immensely happy to be here and to witness all of this. To see the movie based on Komaram Bheem, whose role is played by Jr NTR.”

“To watch that character in Komaram Bheem district itself is an amazing feeling altogether. And I’m thankful to Picturetime and the District Administration to make this possible”, Rajamouli stated.

Rajamouli’s magical spin on the life of the revolutionary is being watched by the whole world. But for the residents of Komaram Bheem’s native place Asifabad in Telangana, ‘RRR’ is not just a film. It’s a chance for them to relive the story of their hero through the screening of the movie.
