IPL 2022: Bangalore got a little bit off the mark in terms of execution, admits Mike Hesson

0

Mike Hesson, the director of cricket at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), on Monday, admitted that his team was a little bit off the mark in terms of executing their plans with the ball in their opening match of IPL 2022 against Punjab Kings.

In a run-fest at DY Patil Sports Stadium on Sunday, RCB was unable to defend 205 as Punjab chased down the total with an over to spare. Moreover, RCB conceded 22 extras with the ball with pacer Mohammed Siraj giving away 10 of them.

“We did not execute as well as we know we need to. I think that’s pretty obvious. We were just a little bit off in terms of being able to execute the plans we had in place. Obviously, we missed wide a lot – even though we were going for the wide line, we missed the wide line a few too many times, and we know we didn’t execute as well as we know we need to,” said Hesson in a video posted by the franchise on Twitter.

“So, certainly, plenty of things to work on, some really good things from a batting point of view. Akash Deep got his first IPL wicket – that was a big thing for him, and we’re obviously proud of him. But all in all, we were just a little bit off the mark in terms of our execution,” added Hesson.

Hesson refused to single out dew as a reason why Bangalore’s bowling attack couldn’t defend 205. “Look, it definitely changed after 10 overs. The dew started to come in a little bit, towards the back end there was quite a lot of that. Look, there’s no excuse.”

“At times we had the game very much in the balance. We fought hard to get back into it. Absolutely there was dew, and the ball slid on, but we still missed in terms of where we wanted to hit, so that’s something we will accept and we will obviously have to get right.”

With the bat, Bangalore had a sluggish start but Faf du Plessis made a stunning turnaround to make a stunning 57-ball 88 and was well-supported by Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 29-ball 41 and Dinesh Karthik’s undefeated late blitz of 14-ball 32.

“I thought we fought really well at the back. Obviously, it was tough; the first ten overs it was a little bit sticky. The fact that we got through that, lost only one wicket sort of gave us the chance to increase that momentum post the time out. We saw some exceptional batting from both Faf and Virat, and then DK at the end to get us a really good score. As I said, obviously it got easier to bat as things went on,” concluded Hesson.

Indian YouTube channels making money from harmful quack videos: Report

0

Several Youtube channels in India are drawing profits from quack health cure videos, for children with behavior problems and asthma that may adversely affect health if followed, media reports said.

According to a Daily Mail report, there were dozens of videos glorifying the use of homeopathic remedy medorrhinum, even on children.

Medorrhinum is made out of the urethral discharge of men with gonorrhea – a sexually transmitted disease. The US-based National Center for Homeopathy says it can treat asthma, epilepsy, warts, period pain, and even psoriasis, the report said.

YouTube ran advertisements for various companies during the videos that were largely from channels based in India and clocked up more than half a million views.

The Google-owned video-sharing platform earns its money from advertisers based on the number of views the advert gets. The online giant places adverts on videos that have been monetized by the uploader.

A YouTube spokesperson said it prohibits content that encourages “dangerous or unlawful activities”, including videos promoting the sale of illegal substances.

“Medorrhinum is not a known illegal or regulated good and therefore not in violation of our policies,” the company was quoted as saying.

A video, filmed by Mumbai-based homeopathic consultant Dr. Jawahar Shah, advocated giving medorrhinum to children who have symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

“Children who are rude and aggressive, throw temper tantrums, who fight with other children, especially during the day and who can kick and strike their parents or relatives can be (given) medorrhinum,” said the video, which has more than 30,000 views.

“At night these children become very playful and affectionate. Such behavior can be expressed by the phrase ‘cross by day, merry by night’.”

On another channel, Dr. Saptarshi Banerjea, with 50,600 subscribers and more than 50 videos on homeopathy, said medorrhinum can treat children who seem both “cruel and compassionate” or “introvert but sociable”.

In the video, which has more than 150,000 views, he said it is a “fantastic treatment” for people suffering from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia because they display “extreme types of behavior”, the report said.

There are also videos advocating magnesium as a “cure” for autism.

However, experts have raised concerns over the health risk posed by such videos.

Former NHS England chief Simon Stevens previously accused homeopaths of spreading toxic “misinformation” about vaccines and posing “a significant danger to human health”.

“Homeopathic remedies are almost without exception so diluted they contain no active ingredient at all, but that does not mean they are harmless – as this investigation shows,” Michael Marshall, project director at the Good Thinking Society, was quoted as saying.

Homeopathic pills “can offer no help when it comes to conditions like ADHD, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia” and children given homeopathy “in lieu of real medication could suffer a potentially life-threatening asthma attack”, he warned.

YouTube has previously come under fire for hosting health videos with harmful health content – most recently after a study found a quarter of its most-viewed Covid videos in English contained misleading information.

It has also previously monetised videos promoting fake cancer cures by running adverts for major brands before they played, the report said.

Homeopathy is an alternative ‘treatment’ based on using heavily diluted samples of substances – often flowers – that date back to the early 1800s.

It is based on the principle of ‘like cures like the belief that materials are known to cause certain symptoms can also cure them.

AI roadmap for defence PSUs: 61 projects identified for development

0

The Defence Ministry has made an Artificial Intelligence (AI) roadmap for each defense public sector undertaking (PSUs) under which 61 defense-specific projects have been identified for development.

“Out of these 61 projects, 26 have been completed by the defense PSUs,” Minister of State for Defence, Ajay Bhatt, said in a written reply to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in the Rajya Sabha.

Bhatt said that to study the whole gamut of issues surrounding strategic implications of AI in the perspective of national security, the Department of Defence Production (DDP) set up a multi-stakeholder task force in March 2018 under the chairmanship of N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons.

The task force submitted its report in June 2018, which recommended integrating and embedding AI strategy for defense with defense strategy and the establishment of a high-level Defence Artificial Intelligence Council (DAIC) and a Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA).

The task force also recommended the development of a data management framework, establishing a data management office, and appointing a data management officer.

It also recommended scaling the existing capability of data centers and establishing a centrally facilitated network of testbeds.

The task force further recommended the creation of a framework to work with the industry and encourage startups to develop AI capability for defense and IP management.

It also recommended organizing AI training courses in all defense training centers and institutes for training of defense personnel, and earmarking of AI budget from the yearly defense budget with a corpus of Rs 1,000 crore to be provided each year for the next five years to support AI activities.

Based on the recommendations, the Defence Ministry through an order dated February 8, 2019, created the Defence AI Council (DAIC) under the chairmanship of the Defence Minister, and the Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA) with Secretary (DP) as ex officio head for providing necessary guidance to enable and affect the development of the operating framework, policy-level changes and structural support for AI adoption.

Moreover, the services have established organizational institutional mechanisms in the form of an AI sub-committee and a joint working group on AI in the tri-services.

As part of the data management framework, services have formulated data policy and appointed data management officers.

Each service has also identified key AI domains for the development of AI projects.

Besides, the services are also engaged in the development of AI projects from the startups through the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and the academia.

“Towards capacity building, officers at different levels from the services have been nominated to different courses on AI, both in-house and at reputed academic institutes,” the minister said.

UP archer Neeraj Chauhan makes it to India’s Asian Games team

0

Nearly a year and a half after getting financial help from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS)’s Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons (PDUNWFS), Uttar Pradesh’s archer Neeraj Chauhan has made it to the Indian archery team for the Asian Games.

Neeraj, who on Sunday finished in the top three positions of the ongoing Asian Games Selection Trials, will also get to represent India at the four World Cups and World Games that are set to take place later this year.

“The timely intervention at that time helped me and my family a lot and got me back to training for the future competition,” Neeraj said.

Neeraj had first made news back in the year 2020 when during the Covid-19 lockdown his father, who at the time was the only earning member of the family, had lost his job due to the pandemic.

The sudden job loss had led to a huge financial crunch for the family, which had then forced Neeraj and his family to sell vegetables to make ends meet.

Their plight was then highlighted by Archery Association of India (AAI) president Arjun Munda, who in a tweet had requested then Sports minister Kiren Rijiju for his help.
The MOS took stock of the situation, and immediately sanctioned Neeraj and his brother Sunil, who is a national boxer, financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each under the ministry’s Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund.

“Since getting the financial help, I was able to upgrade my Archery equipment to the one I am currently using during my training at SAI Sonepat, and also spend a little more money on diet, which I could not before,” Neeraj added.

Asked how he felt about making it to the national team, an ecstatic Neeraj said, “I am very happy and excited that I made it to the Indian National team. My first international event would be the Asian Games, and now I will give my full energy to prepare for the event so I can win a medal there.”

The second phase of the Asian Games, World Games, and World Cup Selection trials is currently on at Sports Authority of India (SAI) Sonepat. While the Recurve category of completion ended on March 27, the selection trials for the Compound category are currently on and will conclude on March 30.

‘RRR’: ‘Komaram Bheemudo’ was a ‘blood and sweat’ project for Jr NTR

Jr NTR, who appeared as Bheem in S.S. Rajamouli’s sensational epic ‘RRR’ is being lauded for his fierce appearance in the blockbuster.

As NTR’s ‘Komaram Bheemudo’ song is currently trending, a close source reveals that it took more than 15 days for the ‘Aadhi’ actor to wrap up this song.

‘Komaram Bheemudo’ song, which has now amassed 1.31 crore views, is currently trending all over. NTR getting publicly whipped under the orders of the tyrannical British has caught the attention of all.

Penned by Telugu’s popular lyricist Sudhala Ashok Teja, this song emotes a strong patriotic feeling.

Sung by Kaala Bhairava and composed by M M Keeravani, the ‘Komaram Bheemudo’ song shooting went on for 15 days.

NTR had to shoot with a background crowd of 600 people under scorching heat during the shoot.

“The platform was scorching hot, and Tarak had to stand barefoot on it, and regardless of how carefully the team worked, the whip tip would keep touching him”, one of the sources revealed.

The same source reveals that the shooting required NTR to have blood all over his body, which was done with many makeup men involved on the spot.

The scene depicting NTR with chains and iron boxes went wrong at one point in time, and he had to be reshot.

“Komaram Bheemudo literally took blood and sweat to be made”, the source adds.

Don’t point fingers at Joe Root; the setup stinks, says Kevin Pietersen

0

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has lashed out over people pointing fingers at Joe Root’s future as Test captain after the 1-0 series loss to West Indies, saying that the cricketing set up in the country ‘stinks’.

He added that the current state of England’s Test cricket is down to the quality of players on the side.

“As a captain, you are only as good as your players. As a CEO of any business, you are only as good as your team. My question is who is going to take over and who is going to do a better job with these players that they have got? Forget Joe Root, it is about the players. Who is going to do a better job with the calibre of player that is playing Test cricket for England? It is not Joe Root’s fault. Who are you going to pick?” said Pietersen to TalkSport Radio.

Former players like Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan, Michael Atherton and Steve Harmison have called for Root to be sacked as Test captain as England lost the third Test against West Indies by ten wickets at Grenada on Sunday and lost the series 1-0.

Under Root’s leadership, England has now won just one Test in the last 17 matches of the longest format of the game. Overall, under Root’s captaincy, England has played 64 Tests, winning 27 while losing 26 matches.

To prove his point of quality of players in England’s setup, Pietersen gave left-arm spinner Jack Leach and off-spinner Dom Bess as examples. “When Jack Leach and Ben Stokes put that partnership together at Headingley (in the Ashes) three years ago, Stokes played the innings of his life – I said then Leach is not good enough.”

“He can be remembered for his glasses and everything else that’s carried on, well let’s hope he’s not remembered for that because he’s not a good enough spinner. He’s not. And who is second in line, Dom Bess? Are you joking? So you are all pointing fingers at Joe Root at the moment, don’t point fingers at Root, understand the setup. The setup stinks.”

With the name of all-rounder Ben Stokes being circulated as a successor of Root, Pietersen, who played 104 Tests for England disagreed with such suggestions. “How is he (Stokes) going to do any better than Joe Root? He can’t (do any worse) but you can have as many voices as you want, that’s what I am saying, how are you going to change?”

“How are you going to get these guys scoring runs against the best bowlers in the world? Have you seen what’s coming (in summer)? New Zealand, India, South Africa. How are you going to get these guys scoring 200s? Number one, two, three, four, and five, how are you going to get them scoring 200s when they can’t bat?”

Japan to compile extra budget: PM

0

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday said an extra-economic package will be compiled by the end of April to soften the blow of soaring prices for crude oil along with other resources.

Kishida told a parliamentary session that the package will function to safeguard the economy’s recovery from the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, while simultaneously helping households to weather the effects of rising prices, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Japanese yen has recently given way significantly to the US dollar, meaning that prices for imports, including energy-related shipments, have soared with the cost being passed on to regular consumers here.

The current situation in Ukraine and the related energy and economic effects are compounding the situation and beginning to be felt in resource-poor Japan, government officials here have said.

“We are entering a critical phase in reviving an economy damaged by Covid-19,” he added.

For the new fiscal year from April, Japan has enacted a record 107.60 trillion yen ($874 billion) budget, with Kishida keen to expedite spending to counteract the blow to the economy from rising prices and the pandemic.

However, while new bond issuance for the budget will drop to 36.93 trillion yen, debt-servicing costs will stand at 24.34 trillion yen, ensuring Japan’s fiscal health remains the worst among industrialized nations.

This is compounded by Japan’s high dependence on borrowing to finance its ever-increasing spending, and thus will likely take some way beyond Kishida’s target of 2025 to achieve a primary balance surplus.

Kishida has promised to consider activating a “trigger clause” that when oil prices rocket, gasoline taxes would temporarily be cut.

He also announced that subsidies for oil wholesalers will be extended by one month to the end of April to drive down retail prices.

Axar Patel knows how to get the best out of me, says Delhi Capitals’ all-rounder Lalit Yadav

0

Following Delhi Capitals’ four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, all-rounder Lalit Yadav lavished praise on his teammate Axar Patel.

On Sunday, in their first match of the IPL, Delhi Capitals were in a spot of bother when they were reduced to 104/6 in the 14th over and needed 74 more runs to win. However, Lalit and Axar strung a fantastic partnership to help their side clinch victory with 10 balls to spare.

Speaking about his unbeaten innings of 48 runs from 38 balls, Yadav said, “When I was in the middle, I played according to the team’s needs. Wickets kept falling at the other end, but I decided to trust my own game and take the match as deep as possible. You never know what can happen. And in the end, we finished the game in the 19th over.”

The 25-year-old added that Axar knows how to get the best out of him, “I feel very comfortable when Axar is at the other end. He knows my game and he knows how to get the best out of me. We were just telling each other to keep our wickets intact and take our team over the line. We knew that if we keep playing then we will win the match before the last over.”

Yadav also spoke about the advice he received from Captain Rishabh Pant, “In the second time-out, Rishabh told me to follow my instincts and take the game as deep as possible. I kept that in mind and didn’t think too much about anything else as Axar and I kept talking and laughing in the middle. It always helps when you bat with someone you know very well.”

Delhi Capitals will take on Gujarat Titans in their next match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Saturday.

Bitcoin swindlers targeting iPhone, Android users via romance apps

0

Bitcoin swindlers are now targeting iPhone and Android users through popular dating apps, such as Bumble and Tinder, charging hundreds of thousands of dollars in fake “profit tax” to unlock their crypto accounts, cyber-security researchers warned on Monday.

The international cryptocurrency trading scam called CryptoRom, unearthed by cyber-security firm Sophos has become well-organized and targets victims all over the world.

In one case, a victim was charged $625,000 to regain access to the $1 million he had invested in a fake crypto-trading scheme, recommended by someone he had met on an online dating platform.

The dating “friend” then claimed to have invested some of their own money to bring their joint stake up to $4 million.

According to the scammers, their investment made a profit of $3.13 million, and they were liable for a 20 percent profit tax, or $625,000 if they wanted to access their account to withdraw funds.

In fact, neither the co-investment nor the profits were real, and the online “friend” was part of the scam, according to Sophos report.

When victims tried to withdraw their investments from one of the fake trading schemes, their accounts were frozen and were charged up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fake “profit tax” to regain access.

“The CryptoRom scam is romance-centered financial fraud that relies heavily on social engineering at almost every stage,” said Jagadeesh Chandraiah, a senior threat researcher at Sophos.

The scammers attract targets through fake profiles on legitimate dating sites and then try to persuade the target to install and invest in a fake cryptocurrency trading app.

The apps are usually installed as web clips and are designed to closely resemble legitimate, trusted apps.

“According to victims of this scam who contacted us after our earlier articles, the 20 percent a profit tax’ is only mentioned when they try to withdraw their funds or close the account,” said Chandraiah.

Victims who struggle to pay the tax are offered a loan. There are even fake websites that promise to help people recover their funds if they’ve been scammed.

“In short, whichever path the increasingly desperate victims go down to try to get their money back, the scammers are there waiting for them. People tell us they have lost a lifetime’s savings or their retirement funds to the scam,” the report mentioned.

The research also found a few cases where the CryptoRom operators had approached targets directly via WhatsApp and SMS messages, probably using stolen information.

According to Sophos, the fraudsters are misusing Apple’s TestFlight feature that allows for a limited group of people to install and trial a new iOS app and go through a less stringent Apple review process.

IPL 2022: KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock make a devastating opening pair, says Gavaskar

0

As debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lock horns at the Wankhede Stadium on March 28, all eyes will be on LSG’s opening pair KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock who joined the franchise from Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians respectively.

Speaking about K L Rahul and Quinton de Kock’s opening combination, legendary Sunil Gavaskar said, “The best part about Quinton de Kock is the fact that he also has captaincy experience. He has been a captain of South Africa and knows all formats of the game. He knows what team building is all about because we are talking about a different team now. He will be very keen to contribute to the team-building process.

“KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock’s right-hand and the left-hand combination makes a devastating opening pair and they can get the team off to a flying start,” he added.

“When he was the captain of Punjab Kings, he seemed to be preoccupied, maybe he was not getting the 11 that he wanted. The new franchise Lucknow Super Giants is going to be a different challenge for KL and if he can bat the way he did in previous seasons and take the team to the knockouts if not actually the finals, then he would have taken a big step forward as far as his own cricketing career is concerned,” Gavaskar said during a Gameplan episode on Star Sports.

Instagram may allow users to respond to Stories with voice messages

0

Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram is reportedly working on a new feature that would allow users to reply to Stories with an image or a voice message.

Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer who reverse engineers apps to find upcoming new features, took to Twitter to share a screenshot from Instagram Stories with a microphone icon in the field for story replies. “Instagram is working on the ability to reply to Stories with voice messages,” Paluzzi said in the tweet.

Instagram introduced two new ways — Favourites and Following — to choose what users see in their feed. The company said it wants users to be able to shape Instagram into the best possible experience and give them ways to quickly see what they are most interested in.

Favorites show users the latest from accounts that they choose, like their best friends and favorite creators. In addition to this view, posts from accounts in Favourites will also show up higher in the home feed. The following shows users’ posts from the people they follow.

Both Favourites and Following will show users’ posts in chronological order to quickly catch up on recent posts. To use Favourites and Following, users will need to tap on Instagram in the top left corner of the home page to choose what they see.

Odisha’s economy contracted by 5.3% due to slowdown: CM

Odisha’s economy contracted by 5.3 percent compared to the 7.3 percent contraction in the national economy during the financial year 2020-21 due to the slowdown, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said here on Monday.

While making his statement on the motion of thanks for the Governor’s speech in the state Assembly through video conferencing, Patnaik said: “Recovery of the economy from the impact of the pandemic was a huge challenge, and we have met this challenge with resolve and we have been able to successfully reboot our economy.”

Over the last 10 years, Odisha has grown at an average rate of 6.5 percent against the national average of 5.3 percent. During 2020-21, due to the slowdown, Odisha’s economy contracted by 5.3 percent compared to the 7.3 percent contraction in the national economy and that would mean, the state was comparatively less affected, he said.

As per advance estimates for 2021-22, the state registered 10.1 percent growth compared to the 8.8 percent growth in the national economy, he stated.

He said Odisha is the only state to be fully FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management) compliant since enactment. Fiscal prudence and inclusive development are “our twin policy objectives” that guide “our growth trajectory,” said the chief minister.

Claiming that Odisha is the pioneer state in implementing international best practices in public financial management, Patnaik said his government is providing complete budget information in user-friendly formats on the website of the finance department as well as the dedicated Odisha budget portal.

In spite of the pandemic, Odisha has emerged as a leading investment destination by attracting over Rs 4.4 lakh crore investment intents during the last three years with more than 1.53 lakh employment opportunities, he said.

The state government has provided special financial support to the MSME sector to tide over the Covid crisis. The government had continuous engagement with the industry to ensure that their production and logistics are not hampered by the pandemic, he pointed out.

The chief minister said: “We aim to saturate all rural households with tap water connection by 2024 with a capital outlay of Rs 50,263 crore under the state saturation plan. Odisha is a trendsetter in the country in achieving universal coverage of tap-water connections.”

“Our food security mission has secured 4th place among large states in the third State Food Safety Index for 2020-21.”

About various incentives and aid provided to the needy people during the Covid-19 pandemic, Patnaik said a cash incentive of Rs 2,000 (in two tranches) to each of the beneficiary families has also been provided by incurring an expenditure of Rs 960 crore.

The government has distributed financial assistance of Rs 3,000 under Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana to each beneficiary for the repair, renovation of their pucca houses sanctioned since 2014. It is further proposed to provide financial assistance of Rs 5,000 each to eligible but left-out households of the state who are yet to get any rural housing assistance, he added.

Speaking about sports development, Patnaik said Odisha is playing a key role in the turnaround of Indian sports scenario with its continuous support for players and investment in sports infrastructure.

In recognition of the brilliant performance of the Indian hockey team at the Tokyo Olympics-2020, the chief minister said his government has decided to sponsor Indian Hockey for another 10 years till 2033. Transforming the sports landscape and empowering athletes is the vision of the government, he added.

IPL 2022: Malinga making a lot of things easier for me as a captain, says Samson

0

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson on Monday stated that having Sri Lanka fast bowling legend Lasith Malinga as the bowling coach of the side has made life easier for him as a skipper and is adding a lot of value to the franchise.

Malinga, who earned a cult following for his performances as a pacer with Mumbai Indians, joined Rajasthan as a bowling coach ahead of the 2022 edition of the tournament.

“We have watched people like Lasith and Kumar Sangakkara in action while growing up and admired the things they did on the field. Lasith especially makes bowling look so easy. Now they are here to help youngsters like us in this team to understand their game better. Whatever chats we had with Lasith, he makes bowling look very simple and easy and that it gives a lot of clarity for every bowler in the side,” said Samson in the pre-season virtual press conference.

Samson revealed how a point made by Malinga captured his attention and thoughts as a captain. “I have been really inspired by his mantra — ‘There are only 2 types of batters: one is right-handed and other is left-handed and you need to only learn to bowl to two of them’. It is such an exciting and interesting point made by him. He definitely is making a lot of things easier for me as a captain like in understanding bowlers, their strengths and weaknesses, and is adding a lot of value to our franchise.”

Rajasthan, the winners of the inaugural edition of the IPL, will open their campaign against 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad. Talking about the opening match at MCA Stadium, Samson felt it could aid pacers due to the wind factor.

“Pune is a bit different with open ground and wind can play a big factor. Also at the start of the tournament, the pitches will be fresh because they have to last for two months. So we should expect some assistance for fast bowlers as well but it could prove to be a high-scoring wicket.”

Samson felt his team will have to adjust quickly to the new format of the tournament caused by the addition of Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans from the ongoing season. “Every year, we have been given a different kind of feeling and challenge. We all are used to it now. It will be very different this time around (due to two new teams) and we have to get used to it.”

Samson signed off by expressing confidence in the good mix of Indian as well as overseas players in countering a long season. “We have a lot of Indian and international strength in our team. It’s a very long tournament. We need to understand the mindset and the fitness and form of all players. But we have enough options to play around and will be very exciting to see.

“This format (T20) has to be played with a lot of fearless mindsets and that sort of characters are there in this team this year. So we would just like to go out there and express ourselves. You can’t have a second thought in this format.”

Cong MLAs complain of police harassment at assembly gate

The Congress legislators of the Gujarat assembly on Monday complained to Speaker Nimaben Acharya about harassment by the police personnel while entering the Sachivalay complex as well as inside the state assembly building. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has promised action against the erring personnel.

Many of the legislators also complained of similar harassment at the MLA quarters in Gandhinagar.

Amit Chavda, former Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president, raised this issue to the Speaker and said, “While entering the sachivalay complex and at the state assembly building entrance, the police personnel was dealing with most of us as if we were terrorists.”

The Speaker said, “Amitbhai Bhagabhai Barad also visited me personally and made a similar complaint. I have instructed the officials to have this incident looked into and from now on, no one will be dealt with in such a manner.”

Shailesh Parmar, Deputy Leader of Opposition said, “We were forcefully stopped by the police personnel at the gate of Sachivalay and when asked we were told by the police that they were acting on the instruction from the Speaker.”

The speaker said, “I never gave any such instruction.”

Vikram Madam, a legislator from Jamnagar said, “Right in the morning, police officials arrived at the MLA quarters and one Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Jadeja said that they were acting on the instruction of the Speaker. Why was he named you?”

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also spoke on the issue in the House and said, “Every legislator deserves respect and the said incident is unfortunate. We will definitely enquire into the incident and those who are found guilty will be strictly dealt with.”

NASA documents hint at discussion to rename Webb telescope: Report

0

Internal email documents of NASA indicate that the US space agency officials have dismissed concerns raised by the LGBTQ community over the name of the James Webb Space Telescope.

The flagship telescope, which was launched in December last year, has been mired in controversy after being named after former NASA administrator James Webb, who reportedly discriminated against gay and lesbian employees in the 1950s and 1960s.

In early 2021, more than 1,200 people, mostly astronomers or astronomy enthusiasts signed a petition urging NASA to rename the telescope, following which NASA opened an investigation on the anti-LGBT+ claims.

The agency, however, did not release a report summarising its investigation or decision-making, Nature reported.

But in September, the US space agency said it does not intend to rename it because it had no evidence to support the allegations.

Now, internal documents obtained by Nature and others through freedom-of-information (FOI) requests reveal that while making its decision, the agency was aware of a 1969 appeal ruling suggesting that it had been customary at NASA to fire people over suspicions about their sexual orientation.

Among the documents obtained by Nature were email exchanges between NASA officials and an external researcher from spring 2021, which discussed the 1969 court ruling, describing it as “troubling.”

The case involved a former NASA employee who had been fired in 1963 because supervisors thought he was gay. This was when Webb was leading the agency.

The email correspondences “paint a stark portrait of how astronomers outside the LGBTQ+ community dismiss the experiences of their queer colleagues and make it plain to see that discrimination against queer people is alive and well in astronomy today”, astronomers who led the community petition, were quoted as saying.

The documents don’t contain evidence that James Webb personally targeted LGBTQ people. However, astronomers opposing the name posit that he played a major role in setting the culture at the agency he presided over, the report said.

Webb was the chief of NASA between 1961 and 1968 when the Apollo program to send astronauts to the Moon was at the height of its development. He died in 1992. In 2002, the telescope was named after Webb to recognize his leadership in government and his commitment to making science a key part of the agency.

The James Webb telescope is a landmark observatory supported by NASA, as well as the European and Canadian space agencies. The telescope, which is expected to make its first scientific observations no earlier than June, is designed to peer at galaxies near the dawn of time and explore other cosmic frontiers.
