Djokovic regains No.1 ATP ranking; Taylor Fritz biggest mover

0

Serbian tennis stalwart Novak Djokovic has wrested back his world No.1 spot on the ATP Rankings from Russia’s Daniil Medvedev — who slipped to No. 2 –, even as American Taylor Fritz is the top mover this week, climbing seven spots to a career-high No. 13 following his maiden Indian Wells title triumph on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Fritz jumped into the top-15 of the ATP Rankings for the first time after he captured his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal in the final.

Fritz became the first American man to lift the trophy in Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001. It is the second time he has triumphed after a tour-level event, following his victory in Eastbourne in 2019, according to atptour.com.

Nadal, the winner of a 21 Grand Slams, too moved up a spot after he made it to the title round at Indian Wells. The 35-year-old, who clinched the crown in Indian Wells in 2007, 2009, and 2013, earned hard-fought wins against Australian Nick Kyrgios and countryman Carlos Alcaraz to improve to 20-1 this season.

Teenager Alcaraz too hit a career-high of No. 16 on the ATP Rankings, with the 18-year-old moving up three sports. The Spaniard defeated top-20 stars Roberto Bautista Agut, Frenchman Gael Monfils, and Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets in Indian Wells as he advanced to the semifinals at a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.

The other notable movers this week are, No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz, (plus-1), No. 24 Gael Monfils (plus-4), No. 28 Alex de Minaur (plus-3) and No. 29 Grigor Dimitrov (plus-6).

White Ferns not good enough to compete with the best: Former New Zealand batter Cumming

0

Former New Zealand opening batter Craig Cumming has said that one cannot say his country’s women’s team competing in the ICC World Cup has been unlucky, adding that the White Ferns are simply not good enough to compete with the best in the world.

The Sophie Devine-led White Ferns are currently sixth on the league table in the eight-team tournament with just two wins and four defeats. They play their last league game against Pakistan on March 26 but their hopes of making the semifinal knock-outs are as good as over.

The 46-year-old Cumming, who played 11 Tests and 13 ODIs besides being a prolific run-getter in first-class cricket has warned that the team should find a way to improve quickly for future tournaments.

“You can’t say they’ve been unlucky at all,” Cumming said on SENZ Mornings on Monday.

“Unlucky is when you go out and the rain comes in and Duckworth-Lewis is in play and all of a sudden you lose runs. The fact of the matter is, I just think they haven’t quite nailed their game. They’ve sort of been four-fifths in one inning and three-fifths in the next innings and you can’t do that.

“The quality of the teams around us is certainly higher than I thought it was going to be. The quality of cricket amongst South Africa, Pakistan, even Bangladesh, is really good. It’s not that we have gone backward, I just don’t think we’ve quite gone forward as much as other teams,” Cumming opined.

The White Ferns came into the tournament on home soil as one of the favorites following their 4-1 decimation of India in the WODI series. They also had the momentum as they defeated six-time champions Australia easily in a warm-up game just before the start of the World Cup.

“We’re not quite as good as some of the other teams. Look at that list of the teams that are here, we aren’t in the top four unfortunately. We’re not good enough to be in the top four and we’ve just go to accept that. We’ve got a find a way in the future to get there,” said Cumming.

Cumming, who is being seen as a potential successor to White Ferns coach Bob Carter, felt that all facets of the game need to be revamped.

“We haven’t been able to nail it with the bat. We get tentative, we get under pressure we soak up a lot of dot balls. The reality is it’s a team game. You need to perform with the bat, ball, and in the field, and unfortunately for the White Ferns (that hasn’t happened) and it hurts.

“Sometimes you’ve just got to look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘We gave it our best but we weren’t quite good enough,” he felt.

Ajay Devgn always wanted to be a director, says childhood pal Rohit Shetty

Filmmaker Rohit Shetty revealed on Monday that Bollywood star and his childhood friend Ajay Devgn’s first love was direction and that he always wanted to be a director.

He also praised Ajay for his sound knowledge of the technicalities of filmmaking.

Speaking on the sidelines of the trailer launch of ‘Runway 34’ which has been directed by Ajay, the ‘Golmaal’ director said, “This may come as a surprise, but since the time I have known Ajay, he has always wanted to be a director. His technical knowledge as a director is unparalleled and you will get to see that in ‘Runway 34’ where he has shot with 10-13 cameras in a cockpit. Shooting with heavy equipment in such a confined space is not an easy task.”

“In addition to acting and direction, Ajay is the producer of the film as well. And let me tell you, he is one producer, who goes all out if he believes in the script. He won’t hold back from spending on the film and I have personally seen that happening with ‘Raju Chacha’, that film was made on a budget of Rs 38 crore at a time when most Bollywood films were made for Rs 7-8 crore.”

While Ajay and Rohit have been frequent collaborators, the two have also been childhood friends with both their fathers working in the action vertical of Hindi mainstream cinema.

Telangana seeks uniform procurement policy

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday demanded that the Centre procure the entire paddy crop from Telangana like it is doing from Punjab and also announce a uniform procurement policy for the entire country.

A delegation of state ministers and MPs will leave for Delhi on Tuesday to meet the Food Minister to press for their demands.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) legislators presided over by KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known.

The TRS chief warned the Centre of a massive protest if it failed to procure the entire yield of 30 lakh tonnes of paddy during Rabi season.

He said during the last Rabi season, paddy production was 54-55 lakh tonnes and this time, it is likely to come down to 35 lakh tonnes due to the efforts of the state government to encourage farmers to go for crop diversification. Of this, 3 lakh tonnes of paddy will be used for seeds while 2 lakh tonnes will be kept by farmers for their own use.

KCR made it clear that the food security of the country is the Constitutional responsibility of the Central government. “It can’t run away from this responsibility citing surplus production. Even if there is surplus production, the government should keep it as buffer stock, process it, or even bear some losses,” he said.

Stating that paddy procurement is a matter of life and death of farmers, he said the Centre should not create hurdles as it did in the previous season.

“You take paddy and pay MSP as you are doing in Punjab. Nothing plus nothing minus,” he said.

KCR demanded a uniform procurement policy for the entire country. He said there should not be different policies for different states.

He made it clear that in case the Centre failed to respond positively to the state’s request, there will be ‘action-oriented’ protests.

He said gram panchayats, Mandal parishads, Zilla Parishad, and municipalities will pass resolutions and send them to the Prime Minister urging him to procure the entire paddy from Telangana.

KCR also demanded Constitutional protection for farmers. “Include farmers’ rights in the Constitution to save them. The MSP, procurement, production all should be covered by the Constitution,” he said.

He said the Modi government should bring a Constitutional amendment in this regard to show its love for farmers.

The TRS leader urged the government to bring the Constitutional amendment during the ongoing session of Parliament and said his party and the entire country would support it.

Women’s World Cup: My favourite player is Shahid Afridi, says Pakistan’s Nida Dar

0

After helping Pakistan to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the Women’s World Cup, match-winner all-rounder Nida Dar named her country’s former batter Shahid Afridi as her favorite player.

“My favorite player is Shahid Afridi, then Shaheen Shah [Afridi], so I always celebrate like them,” the player of the match said.

Nida claimed four for 10, the best-ever figures by a Pakistan bowler at a World Cup, to run through the West Indies batting line-up in Hamilton and restrict them to 89 for seven in a game shortened to 20 overs per side due to rain.

An accomplished chase led by Muneeba Ali’s 37 ensured Pakistan ended their 18-match World Cup-winless streak and left Nida understandably satisfied.

Captain Bismah Maroof, the sole survivor from Pakistan’s most recent World Cup victory in 2009, was fittingly at the crease when the winning runs were hit and urged her side to build on a momentous day.

“We wanted that win badly,” she said. “We have done well but we haven’t crossed the line — we have talked in the group about how badly we needed a win but we have made mistakes at key moments.

“It was a great effort by the girls — credit to everyone. Now we are looking ahead and we will try and take this momentum forwards.”

West Indies skipper Stafanie Taylor was left to rue another below-par batting display which has dented her side’s semi-final ambitions.

“We were looking at 125, that’s what Hayley [Matthews] and [Deandra] Dottin were talking about,” she said.

“Once I got in, I realized 110/115 would have been a good target but somehow we couldn’t get there. When you look at the way we played against Bangladesh, the spinners choked us a bit and we couldn’t rotate the strike. The same thing happened today. All we had to do was rotate the strike and know that we could go big to get ourselves going but we couldn’t turn over the strike,” she added.

I-League: Rajasthan United ease past Churchill Brothers

0

Rajasthan United defeated Churchill Brothers 2-0 to register their second win of the Hero I-League 2021-22 at the Naihati stadium here on Monday.

Churchill Brothers came into the match on the back of their first victory of the season having shocked high-flying Mohammedan Sporting, but weren’t able to translate their form into this game.

The game began with both sides looking to assert dominance in the middle of the park. Rajasthan United slowly started controlling the play and displayed composure on the ball.

The patience of Rajasthan players on the ball started paying off as they got the first corner of the game in the 16th minute. Pritam Singh put a good cross down the right but eventually was blocked by the Churchill Brothers defenders.

Rajasthan had a big chance to score in the 24th minute but a left-footed shot from Alocious was saved by Shilton Paul. From their second corner, Aloicious nutmegged Gogou to create a shot but the power was not enough to beat Shilton.

Rajasthan United was dominating the play and was all over Churchill Brothers when the referee signaled for the cooling break. The break worked really well for Rajasthan as they scored in the 34th minute just after play resumed. Wide forward Alocious tapped in the first goal from Pedro Manzi’s shot across the line who was sent through by a wonderful ball by 17-year-old Gyamar Nikum to make it 1-0.

Alocious doubled the lead and his goal tally for the game in the 38th minute as a quick free-kick by Manzi split open up the Churchill defense. Pritam Singh floated a good ball in from the right-hand side as Alocious tapped it in again.

Churchill Brothers started the second half with great intent as they looked to cut the deficit early on. They started pilling up the pressure and looked for penetration in the attacking third. Their big chance came in the 60th minute as Bhaskar Roy made a fantastic save to deny Kenneth Ikechukwu a goal.

Churchill Brothers were looking to create chances, but there was a lack of creativity in the final third as they weren’t able to transition from their midfield possession. In order to change things up, Churchill also made two substitutions around the 80th-minute mark as Afdal Varikkodan and Vinil Poojary came on.

Pedro Manzi had a great chance to score the third goal for Rajasthan United in the 86th minute as he made a brilliant individual run, had a one-two with Aman Thapa but the Spanish forward was unable to finish it past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Churchill had a late chance, six minutes deep into stoppage time to get a consolation goal but Momo Cisse’s free header went over the bar.

Russian will not put on pause its military action against Ukraine while conducting peace talks

0

Moscow will not put on pause its military action against Ukraine while conducting peace talks with Kiev, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

“You see, a pause in the operation, any pause, is used by the nationalist units to regroup, used to continue attacks against the Russian military,” the official explained. He claimed Russian troops in Ukraine have experienced this before “on multiple occasions.” Russian troops won’t give ‘nationalists’ time to regroup, Moscow has revealed.

During the almost month-long attack on Ukraine, Russia declared a ceasefire on several occasions, stating that a pause in frontline fighting would allow civilians to evacuate affected areas and for humanitarian aid to be brought into Ukrainian cities caught up in the hostilities, RT reported.

Moscow and Kiev repeatedly blamed each other for alleged breaches of ceasefire agreements in various parts of the country. Russia said it believed the Ukrainian government not to be in full control of its units, which count radical nationalists in their ranks.

These forces, according to Moscow, are determined to fight to the end and do not hesitate to hold civilians as human shields and to otherwise undermine efforts to prevent casualties.

How mRNA Covid vax tech is boosting therapies for chronic diseases

0

The success of mRNA vaccine technology against Covid is holding promise for treatments against several chronic diseases, as well as influenza, cancer, cystic fibrosis, and many others.

Although potential therapies are still many years away, researchers see promise in mRNA to treat rare, inherited metabolic disorders, a host of pathogens, including Zika, rabies, HIV, and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, which hospitalizes 3 million children under age 5 each year worldwide, according to a recent report by US non-profit Kaiser Family Foundation.

“This is just the start,” Dr. Judith James, vice president of clinical affairs for the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, was quoted as saying.

“We won’t see these dividends in their full glory for years,” she added.

Both Pfizer and Moderna, credited for the success of their Covid shots, had earlier worked on mRNA vaccines for cancer. Their success is now prompting dozens of clinical trials of therapeutic mRNA vaccines for cancers of pancreas, colon, and skin – all of which frequently respond well to immunotherapy, the report said.

Further, during pandemics, researchers have shown that cellphone apps can detect potential Covid cases by monitoring patients’ self-reported symptoms. According to James, the same computer technology could help predict flare-ups of autoimmune diseases.

“We never dreamed we could have a PCR test that could be done anywhere but a lab,” James said. “Now we can do them at a patient’s bedside in rural Oklahoma. That could help us with rapid testing for other diseases.”

The pandemic also led to the discovery of interferon-targeting antibodies. Research showed that 15 to 20 percent of patients over 70 who die of Covid have rogue antibodies that disable a key part of the immune system, called interferon which acts as the first line of defense against viruses.

By disabling key immune fighters, autoantibodies against interferon allow the Coronavirus to multiply wildly.

Antibodies that disable interferon may explain why a fraction of patients succumb to viral diseases, such as influenza, while most recover, Dr. Gary Michelson, founder and co-chair of Michelson Philanthropies, a nonprofit that funds medical research, was quoted as saying.

The discovery “goes far beyond the impact of covid-19,” Michelson said. “These findings may have implications in treating patients with other infectious diseases” such as the flu.

Several international research teams are now looking for such autoantibodies in patients hospitalized by other viral infections, including chickenpox, influenza, measles, respiratory syncytial virus, and others, the report said.

Delhi Divas win 3BL Women’s Basketball League title

0

Indian national team player Raspreet Sidhu-led Delhi Divas won the coveted trophy of the 3BL Women’s Basketball League 2022 after defeating Kochi Stars here on Monday.

The two favourites in the competition – defending champions Kochi Stars (starring 6ft 1″ Indian team center Stephy Nixon) and Delhi Divas – faced off in the finals as expected. Coming into the final Round 6, these teams (Delhi – 3, Kochi – 2) had won all five preliminary round titles between them.

The Kochi-Delhi rivalry has been the key storyline in the Women’s League so far, with their head-to-head results locked at 3-3.

The finals expectedly saw a clash of contrasting styles, with Stars reliant on controlling the paint through Nixon, while Divas showcased their all-round game led by a pestering defense. After a scrappy first few minutes, the decisive moment came with the scores tied at 7-7. Delhi wrested control of the pace of the game, succeeding in forcing Kochi into playing at a faster tempo. In the process, Delhi built up a four-point 11-7 lead which they never relinquished, for a hard-fought 17-14 victory.

For her overall performance, Sidhu was named the Most Valuable Player of the finals.
“I have no words. It is such an emotional moment. The last two years have been tough on all of us, but it was toughest for me….[because] I think I was giving up. To be a leader, it’s not easy, but to be believed a leader by your team is the most difficult thing, and I think they [my teammates] are my leaders,” an emotional Sidhu said after receiving the MVP award.

“On behalf of all the players here from the Women’s League, I take the opportunity to thank (3BL Commissioner) Rohit Bakshi & Prerna Sharma Bakshi (3BL Director) for giving all the young girls a platform. This 3BL is what India needs. We need a stage to showcase our talent.”

“We have six teams now [in the Women’s League], we will have twelve teams in the next season,” Prerna Sharma, 3BL Director, highlighted during the post-game ceremony.

By virtue of being the 3BL Women’s League Champion team, Delhi Divas has been selected to represent India in the first-ever ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) 3×3 Cup 2022 to be held in Bali, Indonesia on 16-17 April. The ABL 3×3 Cup is classified as a FIBA ‘Lite Quest’ competition that in turn serves as a qualifying tournament for a FIBA Challenger event.

Global Facebook interest declines about 90% in last 10 years: Report

0

There has been an 87 percent decline in the search volume for the term Facebook in the last decade, media reports said.

Aging up of the app’s audience, growing disinterest in the social media site, coupled with the TikTok boom, is behind the waning interest in global Facebook searches, Banklesstimes.com reported.

Several market studies have shown that Facebook is not able to attract users under 30 years. The social media site is losing traction the among teenage and young adult users across its key markets despite rebranding to Meta. From 1.93 billion daily users in Q3 2021, the number of users further fell to 1.929 billion in Q4, the report said.

This has been exacerbated as upcoming competitors join the market.

In February, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg blamed the company for losing its users because of the TikTok boom – currently leading in the short-form user-generated video market.

Although Meta, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, has also been offering Reels on the photo and video sharing app, they have not leveled up to Tiktok’s engagements, the report said.

According to Zuckerberg, the firm is working to introduce its short video product to try and outdo TikTok.

Further, Apple’s “app-tracking transparency” feature, introduced in 2021 with version 14.5 of its iOS mobile operating system, is adding to Facebook’s woes, the report said.

iPhone users are expected to provide explicit consent for user-level and device ID-based monitoring by apps.

Even though several users have declined to share this information en-masse, the development has shaken Facebook advertisers who rely on social networks to sustain their firms, the report said.

Several advertisers have moved away from Facebook, and TikTok is becoming extremely popular since it’s more affordable from a cost-per 1,000 impressions basis.

As a result, Facebook has lost $10bn in advertising revenue. The figure is almost 9 percent of the firm’s 2021 revenues. This is significant since it’s a quarter of its overall annual profit, the report said.

World Cup not yet over, Modi tells Morrison after Aus women’s cricket team win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, for the excellent performance of the women’s cricket team in the world cup.

“Many congratulations to you for the excellent performance of the Australian women’s cricket team in the Cricket World Cup,” said Modi adding that in Saturday’s match, Australia won, but the tournament is not yet over.

“My best wishes to the teams of both the countries,” the Indian Prime Minister said during his address at the second India-Australia virtual summit.

Modi and Morrison interacted during the virtual summit on Monday.

Australia entered the semifinals of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup with a six-wicket win over India at Eden Park in Auckland in New Zealand on Saturday. With two games to go – one with South Africa and another with Bangladesh, Australia have the luxury to rest their key players, if they choose to do so, ahead of the knockout stages.

India posted a competitive 277/7 in 50 overs but Australia chased down the total with three balls to spare. With the win, Australia also broke the record for the highest successful run-chase in Women’s World Cup history, surpassing the one they set against Sri Lanka in the 2017 edition of the tournament.

Currently, India stands fourth with two wins in five games. While India’s wins came against Pakistan and West Indies, the team lost to England, New Zealand, and Australia.

India now has to win the remaining two games and hope for a few results to go their way if they are to make it to the semi-finals of the World Cup.

It is also reported that Rajamouli has planned to wrap up the shooting of this yet-to-begin movie in less than a year, despite its grandeur.
