Women’s World Cup: Australia power to huge win against West Indies

0

Australian bowlers Ellyse Perry (3/22) and Ashleigh Gardner (3/25) ran through the West Indies batting line-up, while top-order batter Rachael Haynes smashed a 95-ball unbeaten 83 as the six-time champions won their ICC Women’s World Cup match against the Stafanie Taylor-led side with remarkable ease at the Basin Reserve here on Tuesday.

The performance by the Australian trio helped Australia win by seven wickets with 118 balls remaining as the side maintained its unbeaten status in the tournament.

Thanks to Perry and Gardner’s efforts, the Courtney Walsh-coached West Indies were bundled out for just 131 in 45.5 overs. In reply, Haynes’s blistering half-century was enough to guide Australia to a big win in 30.2 overs.

While Perry picked up two wickets in her first over and three during a magnificent opening spell, the West Indies showed glimpses of the form that helped them to upset victories over hosts New Zealand and England at the start of the tournament. While captain Taylor (50) led the way with the bat, Hayley Matthews (1/31 and three standout catches) excelled in the field.

But the difference in class was too stark, as Australia made it four from four at the event and extended their lead at the top of the tournament standings.

The West Indies remain in fifth place and will need to win at least two of their remaining three fixtures to progress to the semifinal stage.

While Perry’s opening spell set the tone for a dominant Australian performance, she received good support from spinners Ashleigh Gardner and Jess Jonassen (2/18) throughout.

Perry had the ball swinging both ways, with Matthews (0) and Kycia Knight (0) falling consecutively to excellent deliveries as West Indies were reduced to 4/2 in the second over.

Taylor, who won the toss and elected to bat after rain delayed the start of the match, safely negotiated the hat-trick delivery and set about building a partnership with the in-form Deandra Dottin.

But Perry once again stepped up to the plate to dismiss Dottin for 16, with Australia skipper Meg Lanning holding on to a sharp catch at slip to make it 34/3 after 10 overs.

Taylor and wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle tried to recover, but Gardner got in on the act with two quick wickets to leave West Indies in big trouble at 78/5 at the midway point of their innings.

With Taylor still at the crease, there was still hope West Indies could post a competitive total, but Gardner intervened to trap the skipper LBW and Jonassen chipped in with two late wickets as Australia took complete control.

Alyssa Healy (3) and Lanning (0) fell early in reply to give West Indies a glimmer of hope, but Perry joined Haynes at the crease and the duo batted within themselves to post a 50-run partnership.

Perry wasn’t able to beat all the way through to the required total as she fell to Matthews’ third catch and the bowling of Chinelle Henry (1/20), but Beth Mooney (28*) was on hand alongside Haynes to ensure Australia cruised home.

Brief scores:

West Indies 131 in 45.5 overs (Stafanie Taylor 50; Ellyse Perry 3/22, Ashleigh Gardner 3/25, Jess Jonassen 2/18) lost to Australia 132/3 in 30.2 overs (Rachael Haynes 83 not out, Beth Mooney 28 not out) by seven wickets.

Hijab row: K’taka HC to pronounce verdict today, security beefed up across the state

0

The Karnataka High Court is scheduled to pronounce the judgment on the hijab row on Monday. The special bench constituted to look into the issue will read out the verdict at about 10.30 a.m.

As a precautionary measure, security has been beefed up across the state. Holiday has been declared in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Kalaburagi, and Shivamogga for the schools and colleges on Monday.

Most of the districts have imposed prohibitory orders in the surrounding areas of the educational institutions. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant has issued prohibitory orders restricting protests, celebrations, and gatherings in the entire city for seven days from Monday.

The Hijab row, which started as a protest by six students of the Udupi Pre-University Girl’s College, turned into a big crisis. The issue has become a matter of discussion at the international levels also.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S. Dixit, and Justice Jaiunnesa Mohiyuddin Khaji heard the matter on a daily basis.

The counsels appearing for the petitioners contended that restrictions on hijab to classrooms is a violation of fundamental and religious rights. There is no legal standing for the School Development Committee (SDC) or College Development Committee (CDMC), they said.

They also argued that wearing of hijab is an integral part of Islam. However, the Advocate General and other counsels appearing for the government argued that wearing of hijab is not an essential part of Islam. They have also stated that the government respects the wearing of the hijab and it had been left to the discretion of SDMC and SDCs.

It was also brought to the notice of the court that many Islamic and European countries have banned the hijab.

The verdict is expected to leave a precedent in the country and have a serious impact. Presently, the High Court special bench interim order is in place banning the hijab and saffron shawls in schools and colleges.

Operation Ganga: How India got its citizens out of Ukraine

0

To have evacuated safely more than an estimated 18,000 Indian nationals from Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict is truly a commendable task. Also, to have done it without much fanfare speaks volumes of the coordination put in by the government of India to ensure swift and speedy evacuation. That is the hallmark of ‘Operation Ganga’, initiated to evacuate all Indian nationals living in Ukraine, but stranded due to ongoing military operations on Ukrainian territory by Russia.

The most important foreign policy priority in the ongoing conflict for India has been the safe and secure evacuation of Indians, both students and other residents alike, to India. Operation Ganga is a combined civil and military effort to ensure all Indian nationals return home safely.

India brought back its nationals from Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova after they had crossed over to these countries from Ukraine via land border transit points. This process began on February 22. By March 10, more than 80 flights had been operated to rescue stranded Indians.

Initially, India used its fleet available with the civil airlines, but by March 1 the Indian Air Force (IAF) was called in to help; this was the day when an Indian student was killed in Kharkiv. The first flight carrying Indians landed in Mumbai on February 26 and was received by Piyush Goyal, Minister for Commerce and Industry.

Once the IAF got into action, it became possible to increase the effort as the C-17 Globemaster has a capacity to carry 400 passengers. Notably, the C-17 Globemaster not only brought back stranded Indians but also helped to deliver humanitarian aid to Ukraine, which is experiencing a shortage of food, fuel, medical supplies, and other essentials. Just last year, the IAF C-17 helped in evacuating citizens and officials from Kabul when the Taliban captured Afghanistan. Not only has India ensured safety for its citizens but is also helping its neighbors. In a recent video, a student from Pakistan can be seen thanking the Indian embassy in Kiev and Prime Minister Modi.

This is not the first time that India has evacuated its citizens from conflict zones.

In 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, India evacuated nearly 200,000 Indians stranded there over a period of two months. In 2015, India undertook Operation Raahat to rescue thousands of Indians and hundreds of people from other countries at the height of the conflict between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels. Then in 2021, India launched Operation Devi Shakti to evacuate its nationals from Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul in August that year.

In the case of Ukraine, the government has operated some 80 flights under Operation Ganga to safely bring about 18,000 Indians back home. Of these, private airlines operated 46 as of March 9. Notably, the government decided not to charge anything for those being evacuated. This means that the Centre will have to pay approximately Rs 66-70 crore per flight for a two-way operation.

Of the 46 evacuation flights, 29 were operated to Bucharest in Romania, 10 to Budapest in Hungary, six to Rzeszow in Poland, and one to Kosice in Slovakia.

With Prime Minister Modi leading from the top, the Ministry of External Affairs established 24×7 control centers to provide the impetus for the necessary flow of information out of Ukraine. This ensured that the Centre was able to match records of Indian nationals with available databases. This process was further helped by friendly countries in Eastern Europe, like Poland which waived documentation requirements for Indians to enter and then fly home. A key part of this exercise was the constant conversations that the government had at the highest levels, with heads of state. This ensured smoother facilitation of the evacuation process.

Coordination for the operation came right from the top and dispatch of senior ministers of the government to the countries mentioned above provided the necessary coordination and direction on the ground to ensure smooth completion of all formalities. That the Prime Minister himself held daily meetings to supervise this mission demonstrated India’s seriousness. Modi sent four Ministers, namely Jyotiraditya Scindia, Hardeep Singh Puri, Kiren Rijiju, and V.K. Singh to Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Poland, respectively, to oversee the evacuation of Indians.

The real challenge of evacuating those Indians stuck in eastern Ukraine was of moving people amidst the raging conflict. This is why India proposed the creation of humanitarian passages to both Russia and Ukraine, so that the evacuation would be less hazardous. India deployed one team also in the Russian city of Belgorod, close to the border with Ukraine, in case the possibility of evacuation from the Russian side arose. This did not happen given the intensity of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The closure of the Ukrainian air space further complicated matters as India could not extricate its nationals from Kiev or any other Ukrainian city. This is what created the necessity of moving most people by road or rail to friendly countries across the Ukrainian border for eventual evacuation by air to India.

India has now considerable experience of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, both within the country and overseas. It has also functioned as a first responder to countries in its neighborhood, as it did in Nepal during the 2015 earthquake. The lessons from Operation Ganga will definitely be internalized and adopted to meet such contingencies in the future. The reality is that Indians are spread and settled all over the world and many of them are resident in potential conflict zones. The case of Ukraine is a telling example of how a perfectly quiet situation can turn into a ‘hot’ zone in a short time. The way forward is for India to further refine its capabilities of evacuation while monitoring the presence of Indians in potentially hazardous zones.

Overall, though it must be said “job well done” when looking back at Ukraine.

Hackers hit automotive component supplier Denso, 1.4TB data stolen

0

Automotive component supplier Denso on Monday confirmed that its group company in Germany network was hit by a cyber attack.

The hackers illegally accessed the company’s German operations on March 10.

“After detecting the unauthorized access, Denso promptly cut off the network connection of devices that received unauthorized access and confirmed that there is no impact on other Denso,” the company said in a statement.

It appears that the Pandora ransomware group has claimed responsibility.

The group’s leak site, accessed by ZDNet via Kela’s Darkbeast engine, claims that 1.4TB of data has been stolen.

The company is a global supplier of automotive components, including those developed for autonomous vehicle features, connectivity, and mobility services.

Denso technologies are being used in “almost all vehicles around the globe”.

The company said that the cyber-attack is under investigation and there is no interruption to production activities.

“The company keeps operating its all plants as usual. Denso has already reported this incident to the local investigative authorities. The company is working with them and specialized cyber security agencies to deal with this situation,” it added.

Its clients include Toyota, Honda, General Motors, and Ford.

The company expressed “its sincerest apologies for any concern or inconvenience resulting from this incident”.

Shaheen Gill and Nivedita Karki were among five women youth boxers to strike gold medals as India had another good day at the 2022 ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan on Monday.

Tamanna (50kg), Ravina (63kg), and Muskan (75kg) were the other three boxers who also registered victories in the finals and bagged gold medals. Nivedita provided India an ideal start for the day when she clinched a sensational 3-2 win over Uzbekistan’s Saidakhon Rakhmonova in 48kg final.

Tamanna handed the country its second gold with a win over another Uzbek boxer Robiyankhon Bakhtiyorova by a similar margin in the 50kg thriller. Both Nivedita and Tamanna clinched their second successive medal after the silver medal in the last edition.

Shaheen and Ravina then added two more gold medals to the country’s tally with dominating triumphs by unanimous decisions against their respective Uzbek opponents. While Shaheen (60kg) outperformed Mukhlisa Tokhirova, Ravina thrashed Uzbekistan’s Sitora Bahodirova.

Next in action, Muskan also produced an aggressive show against Kazakhstan’s Aidasaribarova, who found it difficult to match the Indian’s game and conceded heavy blows on her face, before the referee stopped the contest after initial few minutes in the first round and declared Muskan as the winner.

Meanwhile, Priyanka and Kirti suffered defeats in the final and concluded their campaigns with silver medals. While Priyanka went down fighting 1-4 against Kazakhstan’s Bakytseidish in the 66kg category, Kirti (+81kg) endured a 0-5 loss against Sakhobat Khusanova of Uzbekistan.

Renu (52kg), Tanisha Lamba (54kg), Prachi (57kg), Pranjal Yadav (70kg), and Sneha (81kg) are the five boxers who secured bronze medals with semi-finals finish earlier as Indian women signed off with medals in each of the 12 categories in the youth section.

Pooja Hegde says acquiring a pan-India fan base was a coincidence

Actress Pooja Hegde, who is riding on the success of ‘Radhe Shyam’ that also stars ‘Bahubaali’ fame Prabhas, says finding her fan base across the country wasn’t her career strategy but just a coincidence because she is only going with the flow.

Pooja made her debut in Bollywood opposite Hritik Roshan in ‘Mohenjo Daro’ in 2016. However, she became a star in the south with a string of successful films like ‘Oka Laila Kosam’, ‘Duvvada Jagannadham’, ‘Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava’, ‘Maharshi’ and ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’.

Now that ‘Radhe Shyam’ is released in multiple languages and she is getting praised for her acting, Pooja told in an interview that language never stopped her from connecting with her fans, rather it has empowered her.

Pooja told in an interview: “When I started working in south Indian films, I was just going with the flow without strategizing much. It is a blessing that the audience has accepted me in every region. ‘Radhe Shyam’ is an important film for me because it’s a multi-lingual movie.

“I worked hard on my character too. Earlier, people would say that I have a strong screen presence and that I am ‘beautiful’. I think that was more of a compliment for my parents because I got my good looks and physic from them. My acting and my contribution to a successful film make me happy and satisfied. It fuels my energy to do more,” she said.

The actress now has an interesting line-up in Hindi, including Rohit Shetty’s ‘Cirkus’ opposite Ranveer Singh and Salman Khan’s ‘Bhaijaan’.

She will also be seen in the Telugu film ‘Acharya’ starring Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan, and Tamil film ‘Beast’ alongside Vijay.

Asked if her success in south Indian films empowered her to choose better projects in Bollywood, she said, “Yes, undoubtedly so. It actually made me secure in many ways. Look, in Bollywood, I am still a baby… I have a lot more to do. In the Telugu film industry, especially after the success of ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’, producers count me as a bankable star. So there I can demand female-oriented stories, big-budget films with superstars etc. I have worked hard to earn that space in the Telugu film industry. In Bollywood, things are different for me.”

She added, “I am not in a rush in Bollywood that I have to appear in films otherwise I will lose out on visibility. No, I can wait. I am also a fan of many filmmakers and superstars in Bollywood, so I will grab those opportunities. For instance, I am a fan of Rohit Shetty and the kind of commercial potboilers he makes. So when I got the offer of ‘Cirkus’, I just agreed to do the film because I am a fangirl!”

However, she mentioned that even in the south Indian film industry, connecting with the audience of every region is very interesting because the audience is very diverse there.

Pooja explained, “When we say ‘south Indian film’, we must understand that every region is different. The audience of Telugu films is different from Tamil. I am lucky that I have got a connection with both the region.”

ISRO successfully tests solid motor of its small rocket

0

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday successfully tested the solid-fuel motor of its small rocket under development, said a senior official.

The official also said the space agency is planning to fly the small rocket — Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) – during the first half of this year carrying an Indian earth observation satellite.

Speaking to an interview, a senior official of the ISRO said the static test of the solid fuel motor was successfully done at the rocket port in Sriharikota.

The motor was fired for 150 seconds.

The SSLV is being designed to have a carrying capacity of about 500 kg targeting the small satellite launch market.

As a matter of fact, the ISRO is getting orders from foreign parties to launch small satellites.

The first static test of SSLV’s solid-fuel motor was unsuccessful as there were some issues with the engine’s nozzle.

An official had earlier told an interview that the second test will be with the engine that was kept for the rocket. A new first-stage engine for the rocket has to be built.

The other two stages/engines for the proposed SSLV have been tested earlier, an ISRO official had told in an interview.

The 34 meters tall with a lift-off mass of 120 tonnes, the SSLV is a three-stage/engine rocket all powered by solid fuel.

Russia bans Instagram, blocks access for 80 mn users

0

Russia on Monday blocked Instagram for nearly 80 million users in the country after its parent company Meta allowed posts with calls for violence against Russian soldiers and President Vladimir Putin on Facebook and Instagram in some countries.

The social media platform was inaccessible for the vast majority of the country’s population, according to the internet monitoring service GlobalCheck.

Russian influencers on Instagram posted farewell messages to their followers, asking them to follow them on other social media platforms, or download VPN (virtual private network) software to bypass the ban.

Instagram has also provided a platform for Russians to speak out against the war, including wealthy oligarchs and their families, reports The Verge.

Last week, the Russian government’s communication agency had announced that it would block Instagram in Russia beginning March 14.

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri said that over 80 percent of people in Russia on Instagram follow accounts from outside of Russia.

“The situation is terrifying. We’re trying to do all we can to help keep people safe. We’ve made encrypted chats available to everyone in Ukraine and Russia. We’ve encouraged everyone in the region to make their accounts private,” he had said in a video message.

As Russia considered designating Meta as an extremist organization for applying its policies to speech in the context of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the social network said that its decision was taken in “extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances”.

In a rare move, Meta allowed posts with violent speech towards Russian soldiers on Facebook and Instagram in specific countries, including calls for harm or even the death of President Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs at Meta, had said last week that their policies are focused on protecting people’s rights to speech as an expression of self-defense in reaction to a military invasion of their country.

“The fact is, if we applied our standard content policies without any adjustments, we would now be removing content from ordinary Ukrainians expressing their resistance and fury at the invading military forces, which would rightly be viewed as unacceptable,” he argued.

Sivakarthikeyan releases teaser of Vaibhav-starrer ‘Buffoon’

Actor Sivakarthikeyan on Monday released the teaser of director Ashok Veerappan’s upcoming action thriller ‘Buffoon’, featuring actors Vaibhav and Anagha in the lead.

Releasing the teaser on social media, Sivakarthikeyan said, “Happy to launch the interesting teaser of ‘Buffoon’ – next film from Stone Benchers, presented by Karthik Subbaraj and starring Vaibhav. Best wishes team.”

The teaser gives away the fact that the film, which is being presented by ace director Karthik Subbaraj’s production house, Stone Benchers, is a gangster flick.

The plot of the film seems to revolve around a smuggler and a don character called Dhanapal.

One reason why the film has caught the attention of film buffs is that it features Malayalam actor Joju George in it.

Music for the film has been composed by Santhosh Narayanan and the cinematography is by Dinesh Purushothaman.

Apart from Vaibhav, Anagha and Joju George, the film also features Anthakudi Ilaiyaraja, Naren, Moonar Ramesh, Tamizh and Adukalam Jeyabalan among others.

K-Rail: Vijayan dodges points raised by Opposition

The Kerala Assembly on Monday witnessed a debate on the pet project of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan – the K-Rail. As expected the treasury benches batted for it, while the Congress-led opposition termed it as an ecological, environmental and economic disaster if it becomes a reality. At the end of it, the treasury benches said come what may they will go ahead with it and the opposition walked out expressing their displeasure.

If completed, the project will see a 529.45 km corridor connecting Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod and a high-speed train will cover this distance in around four hours. It will cost Rs 63,940 crores. NITI Ayog says it might cost Rs 1.24 lakh crores and is expected to be completed in 2025 according to the detailed project report.

When the opposition sought leave to discuss this project, much to their surprise, Vijayan who last month shot it down, on Monday agreed to hold a two-hour discussion on it.

Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan pointed out various discrepancies in the project in its preliminary feasibility report, the final feasibility report, and what Vijayan said about this project on the floor of the assembly.

“He (Vijayan) says they have had discussions with the people, but that discussion was a monologue where things were told, what should have been done was a dialogue.”

“the ridership in the first report says they expect 40,000 passengers daily and two months later in the final report says the ridership expected is over 80,000. With regard to the embankment needed to build this in the first report, it says it’s 89 km, in the second report it becomes 236 km and in the detailed project report, it says 384 km. This is nothing but data fudging, which is a criminal offense,” said Satheesan.

He pointed out that the Vizhinjam container port terminal work is stuck because of the nonavailability of limestones.

“The fact of the matter is K-Rail will need more limestones even if the entire Western Ghats is demolished and used. This project has come at a time when the whole world is conscious of the climate change phenomenon and this project of the CPI-M is 60 years old and we will not allow this project at all,” added Satheesan.

Vijayan however failed to answer any of the points raised by Satheesan and instead just said that the project is environmentally and economically viable and is meant for our future generations.

“We held discussions with lots of people across the state and we did not get a negative response at all and the general impression was everyone wanted it to be finished at the earliest. The ongoing protests against this project have caused a lot of damage and numerous police and revenue officials have been attacked. Come what may, we will go ahead with this project as this is one which is much needed for the development of the state,” said Vijayan.

He later invited the opposition legislators to come and watch a presentation on K-Rail where all their doubts will be answered on Tuesday.

Satheesan later told the media outside the assembly that they are certain that this project will be one that will finish off Kerala and they will go ahead with their already announced protests from Saturday with more than 1,000 rallies across the state.

Pooja Hegde: Becoming pan-India actress an unplanned co-incidence

Sitharaman presents budget for J&K in Lok Sabha

0

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday presented a budget of over Rs 1.42 lakh crore for the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir for the year 2022-23 in the Lok Sabha.

The budget was tabled by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman amid opposition from some members including Congress MP Manish Tewari, who demanded more time to discuss the budget. Opposition members are opposing a motion by the Finance Minister seeking suspension of certain rules to allow the Lok Sabha to take up the discussion on the same day.

Tewari said: “While scrapping Article 370, the government had said that Jammu and Kashmir will be emotionally integrated with the country and the pace of development will be increased. After 33 months, I would like to ask if the government is successful in achieving both the goals and I humbly say ‘no’. Law and order situation was sensitive in 2019 and is more sensitive in 2022.” Tewari said.

Tewari asked when the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir will be restored as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have assured the House in the past.

Questioning the ongoing delimitation process, Tewari said that as per his knowledge local political parties are not happy with the process and they need to be actively involved in the whole exercise. He demanded provision of representation of the Sikh minority in the assembly.

Participating in the discussion, BJP Member Jugal Kishor Sharma lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for scrapping Article 370 and said that development in the Union Territory has increased since August 2019. He also complimented Prime Minister Modi for his handling of the Covid-19 crisis in Jammu and the rest of India and providing free ration and Covid vaccine.

TMC Member Sougata Ray termed it as a budget for bureaucratic expenditure and said, “I opposed abrogation of Article 370 and still oppose it as it was a wrong step and the country has to pay for it in future. Apart from fulfilling BJP’s agenda it has no meaning.”

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh asked will Congress commit on the floor of the House to bring back Article 370 if they return to power.

Kerala ministers’ aides get life-long pension after 2 yrs work: SC

0

The Supreme Court on Monday orally criticized the Kerala government over the practice of life-long pension for personal staff of ministers after just 2 years in service.

The top court made this observation while declining to entertain a plea by Kerala State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) challenging the decision taken by state-owned marketing oil companies, in connection with the increase in fuel prices for the bulk purchasers.

A bench of Justices Abdul Nazeer and Krishna Murari observed that Kerala has enough money to pay lifetime pension to persons engaged for just two years with ministers.

“Please tell your state, if they can do that, why can’t they do this? Please convey this,” the bench said.

The counsel for KSRTC submitted that the differential price was being charged from the corporation which was above the market rate, and there was a difference of Rs 7 per liter, even though there was an agreement.

The bench asked the council to move the plea before the Kerala High Court. “They can handle it,” it said.

The corporation argued that they moved the top court due to the “manifestly discriminatory, arbitrary and unreasonable decision” of the state-owned oil marketing companies to increase the price of diesel sold in bulk, only to the petitioner, which is significantly higher than even the market price of diesel, which is violative of Article 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution.

The plea contended that this decision is further burdening the corporation, which is already suffering exponential financial crisis year after year.

The plea said: “As per the prevailing general principles of businesses across the globe, bulk purchasers get discounts from the sellers in comparison to the retail prices because the seller saves a considerable amount of money. However, in the present case, despite saving a huge amount of money in terms of agency commissions and logistical expenses, the state-owned OMCs are not selling the diesel in bulk as per the present retail market rate to the petitioner corporation.”

Robots with realistic pain expressions can cut error, bias by doctors

UK researchers have developed a way to generate more realistic and accurate expressions of pain on the face of medical training robots during the physical examination of painful areas.

The new approach by the Imperial College London team could help to reduce errors and bias by doctors during physical examinations.

The findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, suggest this could also help teach trainee doctors to use clues hidden in patient facial expressions to minimize the force necessary for physical examinations, and may also help to detect and correct early signs of bias in medical students by exposing them to a wider variety of patient identities.

“Improving the accuracy of facial expressions of pain on these robots is a key step in improving the quality of physical examination training for medical students,” said Sibylle Reroll, from Imperial’s Dyson School of Design Engineering.

In the study, undergraduate students were asked to perform a physical examination on the abdomen of a robotic patient. Data about the force applied to the abdomen was used to trigger changes in six different regions of the robotic face – known as MorphFace – to replicate pain-related facial expressions.

This method revealed the order in which different regions of a robotic face, known as facial activation units (AUs), must trigger to produce the most accurate expression of pain. The study also determined the most appropriate speed and magnitude of AU activation.

The researchers found that the most realistic facial expressions happened when the upper face AUs (around the eyes) were activated first, followed by the lower face AUs (around the mouth). In particular, a longer delay in activation of the Jaw Drop AU produced the most natural results.

When doctors conduct a physical examination of painful areas, the feedback of patient facial expressions is important. However, many current medical training simulators cannot display real-time facial expressions relating to pain and include a limited number of patient identities in terms of ethnicity and gender.

The researchers say these limitations could cause medical students to develop biased practices, with studies already highlighting racial bias in the ability to recognize facial expressions of pain.

“Underlying biases could lead doctors to misinterpret the discomfort of patients – increasing the risk of mistreatment, negatively impacting doctor-patient trust, and even causing mortality, a said co-author Thilina Lalitharatne, from the Dyson School of Design Engineering.

“In the future, a robot-assisted approach could be used to train medical students to normalize their perceptions of pain expressed by patients of different ethnicity and gender.”

Chitra Ramkrishna, the ex MD and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the NSE co-location case, was on Monday remanded to fourteen days judicial custody by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court.

Ramkrishna was produced before the special court after the expiry of her custodial remand. After Monday’s hearing, the court remanded her to 14-day judicial custody. She will be lodged at Tihar Jail.

The CBI had on March 6 arrested Chitra Ramkrishna, accused of grave lapses at India’s largest stock market including sharing confidential information with an individual. She was produced before the court on March 7 after her anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the court a day earlier.

Anand Subramanian, the ex Group Operating Officer, was also arrested by the CBI. He was interrogated at length during the custodial period. He is also currently in judicial custody.

The federal probe agency is probing the matter since May 2018 but they haven’t found any concrete evidence to identify mysterious Himalaya Yogi with whom the classified information was shared by Ramkrishna.

Recently, the SEBI had imposed a fine of Rs 3 crore on her, following the market regulator finding that she allegedly shared vital inputs about the NSE with the yogi. “Information regarding organizational structure, dividend scenario, financial results, human resource policies and related issues, response to the regulator, etc, were shared by her with the yogi,” said the source.

Between 2014 and 2016 she sent emails at rigyajursama@outlook.com.

On April 1, 2013, Ramkrishna became the CEO and MD of NSE. She brought Subramanian to NSE as her advisor in 2013.
