Finish matches in regulation time: Women’s hockey coach to Indian players

0

Indian women’s hockey team chief coach Janneke Schopman wants her side to win in regulation time and not in shootouts, as the latter is a pressure-cooker situation, and the likelihood of making mistakes increases.

India bounced back from the 1-2 shootout loss to Germany (1-1 regulation time) in the first leg of the FIH Pro League here on Saturday to score a remarkable 3-0 win in shootout in the second leg after the game once again ended in a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time on Sunday.

Reflecting on her side’s performance in the two-legged series over the weekend, Schopman said the team’s focus is to do better in every game.

“Our focus is to improve and do better in every game, which I think we are doing it. In Saturday’s game, we didn’t start well, but in the next game, we started well. However, in the second game, we got a little bit on the back foot after losing the video referral and then the PC that went in because a player got sent out.

“I just reminded the players at halftime that we are actually in the game and you just have to keep working hard and keep to our game plan and win the balls. I think we created enough opportunities. The only thing to say is that we should win in regulation time and not in shootouts,” said Schopman, reflecting on the second game, which India won.

India was successful in converting their first three attempts in the shootout in the second leg. Salima Tete, Sangita Kumari, and Sonika were the goalscorers for India, while the captain and goalkeeper Savita denied Germany’s all three attempts.

Speaking about the improvements she noticed in her team in the second leg, Savita said, “Shootout is a situation of pressure. After so many years, it was our first shootout on Saturday, so our players and I made a few mistakes. But, we worked on those errors and thought that we just have to implement what we do in the training if the match heads to the shootouts. So, we worked on our mistakes from the Saturday game and implemented the learnings in Sunday’s game. We have very skillful players in our team and they all were able to score easily,” said Savita.

Speaking about the performance of the two debutants — Akshata Abaso Dhekale (on Saturday) and Bichu Devi Kharibam (on Sunday) –, Schopman said, “We have a lot of young players. Akshata has really shown a lot of progress in the training sessions. She is a smart player, she defends well; she is calm. If she keeps growing, she has a great future.

“Bichu Devi, the goalkeeper also made her debut today (Sunday), she is a very good goalkeeper. I am really happy with the performances, but there’s a lot to learn for them,” Schopman averred.

With 12 points from six games, the Indian women’s team is at the second spot in the FIH Pro League 2021/22 standings. They will next play a double-header against England here on April 2 and 3.

Amala Paul has fond memories of trip to Indonesia’s Pink Island

Actress Amala Paul seems to have fond memories of her trip to Indonesia’s Pink Island in 2019.

The actress recently took to Instagram to share her pictures, shot during a trip to a country that is popularly known as the ‘Land of Thousand Islands.”

Posting pictures from her trip back then, the actress said, “Call me a beach bum and I’ll probably say ‘yes ma’am’. Throwback to my trip to Pink Island, Indonesia — 2019.

“Fun fact: Pantai Merah or simply, the pink beach Komodo Island, is one of the seven pink sand beaches across the world. What makes the sand appear pink under the sun are microscopic residents, organisms called Foraminifera.

“They produce a red pigment on the coral reefs and leave small red particles behind that blend with the white sand, forming a soft pink tint that glows beautifully and is visible from the shore, water, and viewpoints on the hills.”

The actress also posted pictures of her visit to Komodo Island in Indonesia.

Nitish Kumar rebukes speaker Vijay Sinha in Bihar Assembly

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday pulled up Assembly Speaker Vijay Sinha after BJP MLA Sanjay Sarawgi pointed out an issue of Lakhisarai in the house.

Vijay Sinha had recently brought a breach of privilege motion in the house after two SHOs and a DSP rank officer allegedly misbehaved with him in his home district Lakhisarai on February 9.

Under the special privilege motion, he asked the chief secretary and DGP of Bihar to take action in this matter. Unfortunately, no action has been taken against alleged SHOs and DSP.

Sanjay Sarawgi, a BJP leader took up the issue during the Question hour of Vidhan Sabha and asked the minister to inform the house about the action taken report.

As the chief minister is also holding the home minister portfolio, he got upset. He stood from the seat and directly told the speaker that the house cannot run like this. “This is my fourth stint as chief minister and have never come across any situation like this where a question is repeatedly asked in the Assembly. The House cannot run like this. You (Speaker) cannot interfere in every matter. The investigation is currently underway. We neither frame nor save anyone. Who are you to adjourn the house over a question of a particular place?” Kumar asked.

“I will ask the department concerned to provide the status of the investigation. If anyone has any doubt, I will hold a meeting on this matter today,” Kumar said.

Replying to the chief minister, Speaker Sinha said: “The members of the entire house including you (Chief Minister) elected me as the speaker. I am a custodian of the house and it is my duty to strengthen the voice of every public representative of the house. This issue has been pointed out thrice in the house and legislators of ruling and opposition parties have the same stand. Despite this, the issue was not addressed by the home department. The situation is as such that despite sitting on the chair of the speaker, I am unable to raise issues of my areas (My district),” Sinha said.

“When I visit my constituency, people ask me that I am sitting on such a big post but unable to address the issues of my areas. Why has the state government not taken action against two SHOs and a DSP?” Sinha said.

“When it comes to the constitution, people like me are always eager to learn from you (Chief Minister) and other senior members of the house. You are more knowledgeable than me but please don’t disrespect the Speaker’s chair,” Sinha said.

Higher prices of manufactured goods pushed up India’s February 2022 wholesale inflation on a sequential as well as on a year-on-year basis.

Accordingly, the annual rate of inflation, based on wholesale prices, rose to 13.11 percent last month from 12.96 percent reported for January 2022.

Similarly, on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data furnished by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed an exponential rise last month over February 2021, when it stood at 4.83 percent.

“The high rate of inflation in February 2022 is primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, chemicals, and chemical products, crude petroleum and natural gas, food articles and non-food articles, etc. as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year,” the Ministry said in its review of ‘Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India’ for February.

“The month over month change in WPI index for the month of February 2022 stood at 1.4 per cent as compared to January 2022.

UK regulator warns illegal crypto ATMs to shut operations

0

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has warned operators of crypto ATMs in the country to shut down their services or face enforcement action.

Crypto ATMs offering crypto-asset exchange services in the UK must be registered with us and comply with UK Money Laundering Regulations (MLR).

“None of the crypto-asset firms registered with us have been approved to offer crypto ATM services, meaning that any of them operating in the UK are doing so illegally and consumers should not be using them,” the FCA said in a statement.

“We have warned operators of crypto ATMs in the UK to shut their machines down or face enforcement action,” it added.

The UK regulator said it is concerned about crypto ATM machines operating and will, therefore, be contacting the operators instructing that the machines be shut down or face further action.

Since it published the list of unregistered crypto firms that may have been continuing to conduct business, a recent assessment found that 110 are no longer operational.

“We regularly warn consumers that crypto assets are unregulated and high-risk which means people are very unlikely to have any protection if things go wrong, so people should be prepared to lose all their money if they choose to invest in them,” the regulator stressed.

In the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, the FCA has also written to all registered crypto-asset firms and those holding temporary registration status to highlight the application of sanctions on various entities and individuals.

US Embassy in Kiev asks Americans to leave Ukraine

0

The US Embassy in Kiev on Monday asked American nationals in Ukraine to leave the war-torn nation as Russia continued its assault for the 19th day.

Taking to Twitter, the Embassy said: “We urge US citizens to depart Ukraine now via ground transport if safe. Border crossings are open. Consider routes & risks; roads may be crowded, exposed to combat, or have damaged infrastructure.

“Sheltering in place may be the best option for some.”

In a similar notice issued on March 9, the Embassy had asked Americans to “depart Ukraine immediately” as the security situation throughout the country “continues to be violent and unpredictable due to ongoing military attacks by Russia, with active fighting in the country and uncertain safety conditions”

The Embassy’s announcement on Monday came shortly after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dymtro Kuleba.

Blinken said in a tweet that they spoke about Washington’s “steadfast support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and ongoing efforts to stop (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war of choice”.

On his part, Kuleba said they both agreed that” more needs to be done to stop Russian aggression and hold Russia accountable for its crimes”.

He thanked the US for “firmly standing by the people of Ukraine”.

The developers have confirmed that they have stopped all further development of the project, and Vanced has been officially discontinued.

“Vanced has been discontinued. In the coming days, the download links on the website will be taken down. We know this is not something you wanted to hear but it’s something we need to do. Thank you all for supporting us over the years,” the brand said in a tweet.

According to replies to the original tweet, the app will continue to work, so for those who already have, it installed. However, the developers do note that there is a chance that it could stop working one day.

YouTube Vanced is a modded version of the original app that allows users to block all video ads on YouTube without a premium subscription. Vanced also includes a true black theme, and customizations not offered in the official YouTube for Android app.

Meanwhile, YouTube is bringing video transcriptions to its Android app. With this new feature, users do not need to be sitting in front of a computer to scroll through a script.

Once it is life, they can click on the “Show Transcript” button found below a video’s expanded description, sandwiched between any provided chapters and other suggested uploads from the channel.

These transcript options appear pretty similar to what’s been available on desktop for a while now but transposed to a mobile-friendly UI.

‘Got greedy’, says ‘Jalsa’ Director on casting Vidya, Shefali

Director Suresh Triveni, who is gearing up for his upcoming drama-thriller film, ‘Jalsa’, recently admitted that he did get ‘greedy’ while casting powerhouse actresses like Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah for his film.

This is the second time that the director is working with Vidya, their earlier association being, ‘Tumhari Sulu’. Suresh got the idea to cast Shefali after watching her brilliant performance in the webseries, ‘Delhi Crime’.

Casting two phenomenal talents in the film, Director Suresh Triveni shared, “I like making films because I get an opportunity to work with brilliant actors. After working with Vidya in ‘Tumhari Sulu’, I knew that working with her, you are spoilt, and you want to go back to her with another film.”

The drama thriller features Vidya essaying the role of a journalist Maya while Shefali, takes the onus of portraying Rukhsana, Maya’s house help.

Shedding further light on what led to Shefali’s casting in the film, he said, “So that was one single motive. The second was after I watched ‘Delhi Crime’, and of course, I’ve been following Shefali’s work for some time. I was just too greedy and then I thought, this idea came that, what if I bring these two together?”

In addition, the film also stars Manav Kaul, Rohini Hattangadi, Iqbal Khan, Vidharti Bandi, Shrikant Mohan Yadav, Shafeen Patel, and Surya Kasibhatla.

‘Jalsa’ is set to have its global premiere on Prime Video on March 18.

ISL 2021-22: Hyderabad, ATK Mohun Bagan look to assert supremacy in 2nd semi-final

0

Their consistency through the season will be tested to the core when Hyderabad FC and ATK Mohun Bagan lock horns in the first leg of the second semi-final of the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL), at the Athletic Stadium, here on Saturday.

The clash will be between the two sides who have really looked the part for most parts of the season, Hyderabad sitting pretty at the top of the heap for a copious amount of time and ATKMB finding their mojo under Juan Ferrando after former coach Antonio Lopez Habas parted ways with the Mariners midway into the season.

Hyderabad is in the midst of its most successful season in the ISL. They finished third in the league stage and qualified for the semi-finals for the first time, but their dominance was there for all to see.

Manolo Marquez’s men won 11 of their 20 games and were in pole position to win the League Shield but for Jamshedpur, who thrashed them 3-0 in a crucial game towards the end of the league stages. It was a depleted Hyderabad side and the result was an aberration by all means to what has been a spectacular season for them.

At the heart of their success has been the talismanic striker Bartholomew Ogbeche, who has so far banged in a whopping 17 goals in 17 games, missing the last two games due to illness.

“We are recovering. We are preparing, and in terms of physical condition, we will have to wait till the last moment to see how the players are. We are ready to play a very strong side,” Marquez said.

“The good part is that this is the first time we reached the semi-finals. The players will be nervous but in my opinion, the players will play freely and we have to enjoy this historic moment. We need to play in a very good way because I think the four teams that finished in the top four are the four strongest teams in the competition. So we can expect two good games,” he added.

Meanwhile, ATK Mohun Bagan has had a massive turnaround under Ferrando, losing just once and winning 14 games to finish third in the table.

Ferrando focussed more on a passing game and that paid rich dividends as the green and maroon side went on a 15-game unbeaten run before losing to Jamshedpur in the final league game.

For ATKMB, the likes of Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh have been brilliant throughout the season scoring 14 goals between them. Roy Krishna also found his scoring boots in a 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC and along with David Williams the duo have a deadly record in the knockout stages.

Williams has scored five goals and provided one assist in the knockout stages for the last two seasons while Krishna is the joint-highest assist provider with five assists and one goal to his name in six appearances in semis and finals.

“We are playing a very good team. They have a great squad. Hyderabad, after 20 games, will want to enjoy the playoffs and this is the reason they are a difficult team to beat. They have been brilliant this season and it has been perfect for them,” Ferrando said.

On Ogbeche, Ferrando said: “We have a plan. I can’t explain now. Our plan will be to keep the ball, find spaces and attack. This is the plan against Hyderabad.”

ATKMB has an unbeaten record against Hyderabad and this season the two teams have shared the spoils once with ATKMB getting the better of their rivals on the other occasion.

Women’s World Cup: Shabnim was incredible in that last over, says Laura Wolvaardt

0

South Africa batter Laura Wolvaardt praised the efforts of pacer Shabnim Ismail in the match against Pakistan, saying she was incredible in the final over. In their second league match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at Bay Oval, Pakistan needed ten off the final over and Shabnim took out Diana Baig with a sliding catch while running towards mid-wicket in an incredible effort of superb athleticism.

Eventually, Shabnim was named Player of the Match for her figures of three for 41 in 9.5 overs. “Shabnim was incredible in that last over — but it’s typical of her – she’s such a big match player so not surprised that she handled the pressure the way that she did. That catch was incredible to go from a full run-up and bowl that ball to turn around and take an overhead catch. I think overheads are difficult enough as it is so it was really good from her,” said Laura in the post-match virtual press conference.

Laura felt the six-run heist against Pakistan could have been a different winning margin if South Africa hadn’t missed a couple of run-out chances. “I think missing those runouts wasn’t ideal. If we got one or two of them early on, we definitely would have been in a different situation at the end. It was just it was one of those days they were all just missing the stumps and in training yesterday we were hitting most of them. So, it’s just one of those days and I’m glad we could still come away with the win.”

In the match, South Africa made 223/9 in 50 overs with Laura top-scoring with 75 off 91 balls, her knock laced with ten boundaries. Laura, 22, was proud of how the team has been able to keep their nerves in pressure situations.

“We definitely would have liked, I think 20 or 30 more runs with the bat, and we knew that coming off the field. It could possibly get a bit tight at the end there. But I think knowing that we’re not playing our best cricket and still winning tight games is a good thing. I guess if we were playing our best cricket and it was still being this tight then it would actually be worse. So, definitely a big morale booster and hopefully we can make it less tight next time.”

Laura was also surprised over the calm composure shown by captain Sune Luss throughout the match and thinks the ability to remain calm will keep the team in good stead.

“We were actually surprisingly calm given the situation, Sune especially. You don’t even notice that she’s actually on the cricket field. She kind of just looks the same as when she’s off of the cricket field. That’s how chilled she is. So, I think that just rubs off on everyone at the end of the day. That’s going to be crucial going forward — just remaining calm in those big moments.”

Twitter labelling tweets from state media outlets in Belarus

0

Micro-blogging site Twitter is now also adding labels to accounts and tweets sharing links from Belarusian state-affiliated media outlets “after detailed reporting about their role in the war in Ukraine.”

The website started labeling tweets from Russian state media outlets a few days in late February in an effort to significantly reduce the circulation of their content, reports Engadget.

Yoel Roth, the company’s head of site integrity, said on Twitter that the company made the decision to label tweets from Belarus, as well, after expert voices highlighted the country’s involvement in the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are adding labels to accounts and Tweets sharing links of state-affiliated media outlets in Belarus after detailed reporting about their role in the war in Ukraine. This builds on our years-long work to add context to state media outlets and limit their reach on Twitter,” Roth wrote.

Roth said Twitter saw a 30 percent drop in impressions on Tweets from Russian state media based on early data, suggesting that the company has been successful in its goal to limit those outlets’ reach.

Similar to what it did to the Russian state outlets, Twitter will also reduce the visibility of labeled tweets with Belarusian state media content. In addition, users will see a prompt whenever they try to share labeled tweets.

Twitter blocked ads from state media outlets years ago, but it completely paused ads and recommendations in Ukraine and Russia shortly after the war began to make sure critical public safety is elevated.

While Russian authorities had blocked the website since then, Twitter launched a Tor onion service to give the country’s residents access to sources about the war other than state media.

Google to let you pay for parking using voice command

0

Tech giant Google has rolled out a new feature that will allow users to pay for parking using their voice through a partnership with ParkMobile.

The goal is to help drivers eliminate the pain points of paying at the meter when it is too cold, a meeting runs longer than expected, or the cup holder does not have enough quarters, reports TechCrunch.

This partnership is the latest example of Google’s push into transportation, including adding biking and ride-hailing in Google Maps, developing a digital key, and working with automakers to integrate its Android operating system in vehicles.

Parking is the low-hanging fruit that helps Google integrate even further into consumers’ daily lives. This partnership with Parkmobile has limited reach for now. But if the past hints at what’s to come, Google will be adding partners in no time, the report said.

The voice parking feature is as straightforward as it sounds. Once you park in a spot, say “Hey Google, pay for parking,” and follow Google Assistant’s prompts to pay from your phone. Google Pay handles the transaction, it added.

The Android upgrade will also help users to check how much time is left on the meter and add time with the voice commands. Just say, “Hey Google, parking status” or “Hey Google, extend parking”.

UN-backed report flags concern over link between social media and drug use

0

Social media platforms are offering new opportunities to buy cannabis and are glamourizing negative behavior related to drugs, reveals a report calling on governments to address such platform’s links with illicit drugs.

The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), an independent and UN-backed body, in its Annual Report 2021 released on Thursday, addressed the increasing evidence of a link between exposure to social media and drug use.

This development is particularly important for young people, who are the main users of social media platforms and an age group with high rates of drug use, it said.

“Social media not only promotes negative behavior related to drug use by glamourizing those behaviors, but also offer users the opportunity to buy cannabis, prescription pain killers, and other controlled substances on many platforms,” said Jagjit Pavadia, INCB President, in a statement.

Besides, calling on governments to take a more active role in regulating these platforms, the report also asked the private sector to moderate and self-regulate their platforms and limit the advertisement and promotion of the non-medical use of drugs.

Even as several countries “have decriminalized and depenalised the use of cannabis for non-medical purposes, it has been interpreted by many entities as the legalization of the non-medical use of cannabis,” Pavadia added.

The INCB emphasized that balanced and proportionate responses to drug-related offenses should be a guiding principle in criminal justice matters with respect for human rights and public welfare.

The report also raises concern about regional disparities in the availability of pain relief medication.

It noted that nearly all consumption of opioid analgesics is concentrated in the developed countries of Europe and North America while consumption in other regions of the world is often insufficient, and the medical needs of those populations cannot be met.

The world narcotics control board urges governments to do more to make medications sufficiently available and ask countries with greater resources to help countries with fewer resources in ensuring access to narcotic drugs.

The report called for “special attention and scrutiny” of illicit financial flows generated from drug trafficking, which can have a wide negative impact on society, diverting money from the economy, leading to social and political instability.

The report also noted that although new technologies like digital currencies, mobile payments, and e-wallet services have made the international transfer of funds easier and faster, they have anonymized users and processes thereby creating new avenues for illicit financial flows.

The Board warns that organized criminal groups have exploited these new technologies to hide the origins of illegal funds and maximize profits.

To counter these, INCB calls on governments to address all stages of drug trafficking — from production and cultivation to sale and concealment of illegal profits.

Women’s World Cup: Unfortunately, we couldn’t cross the line, says Pak skipper Maroof

0

Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof on Friday termed her team’s inability to chase 224 against South Africa as ‘unfortunate’. In a thrilling match at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at Bay Oval, it was a case of so close yet so far for Pakistan, who panicked at the far end of the chase to fall short by six runs.

“We could have won, but it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t cross the line. We had some good partnerships in the middle and if one of the set batters would have gone on till the end, I think it would have finished the game for us,” said Bismah in the post-match virtual press conference.

Bismah had no qualms in admitting that the heart-breaking loss will hurt Pakistan a lot. “Definitely it will hurt us and we had that belief that we can do it and I think there are many positives. We can take it up for the next game — especially in batting with good partnerships and we have played deep. But yes, the result was not in our favor, so definitely it will hurt us.”

Bismah was in praise of leg-spinner Ghulam Fatima, who took three wickets for 52 runs in her nine overs. The match against South Africa was also Fatima’s comeback in international cricket after 2018. Despite conceding the most runs by a Pakistan bowler, Fatima had dismissed the most crucial batters in South Africa’s line-up at critical junctures in the middle overs.

“I think she bowled really well and got wickets in the middle and put pressure on the South African batters. I think she has improved and is more confident and she wants to perform in challenging situations. I liked that in her — that she’s up for the challenge and wanted to take wickets.”

Bismah signed off by saying Pakistan’s mindset from now onwards will be to win every game in the tournament. With a hat-trick of losses, Pakistan is at the bottom of the points table and is yet to register a win.

“From today, we can find positives that we can take and move forward and we have matches. Our next match (is) against Bangladesh (on Monday) — we can look forward to that, and we’re trying to win every match now in the tournament.”
