Mozilla releases fix for 2 actively exploited bugs in Firefox browser

0

Mozilla, the firm behind the popular web browser Firefox, has released a fix for two critical zero-day vulnerabilities that are actively been exploited by hackers.

The Firefox developers said that are aware of “reports of attacks in the wild” actively exploiting these vulnerabilities.

“We have had reports of attacks in the wild abusing these flaws,” said Mozilla.

Both zero-day vulnerabilities are “Use-after-free” bugs, which is when a programme tries to use memory that has been previously cleared.

When threat actors exploit this kind of bug, it can cause the program to crash, allowing commands to be executed on the device without permission, reports Bleeping Computer.

“These bugs are critical because they could allow a remote attacker to execute almost any command, including the downloading of malware to provide further access to the device,” the report mentioned late on Sunday.

The company strongly recommended Firefox users immediately update their browsers.

Mozilla recently patched nine of the 10 bugs affecting its software within 90 days of the initial report.

It also took an average of 46 days to fix bugs compared to 44 days for Google, 69 days for Apple, and 83 days for Microsoft, reports ZDNet.

Microsoft to invest Rs 15,000 crore in Hyderabad data centre

0

Software giant Microsoft will set up its largest data center in India at Hyderabad with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore.

The Telangana government and Microsoft Monday jointly announced the data center investment which will be Microsoft’s largest data center region in India.

Microsoft will make the investment over a period of 15 years into the new data center region spread across three sites – Chandanvelly, Ellikatta, and Kottur.

The software giant already has its India development center in Hyderabad, which is the largest in the world outside its headquarters in the US.

The new data center in Hyderabad will deliver advanced data security and cloud solutions that will help enterprises, start-ups, developers, education, and government institutions.

The announcement was made in the presence of Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Telangana’s Information Technology Minister K.T. Rama Rao, and Principal Secretary, ITE&C, Jayesh Ranjan. The event was also attended by Microsoft’s Executive Vice President, Jean-Philippe Courtois, and Microsoft India President, Anant Maheshwari.

The Hyderabad data center region is another addition to the existing network of 3 regions in India across Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai, which have been operational for more than five years.

K.T. Rama Rao called it an iconic moment in the development story of Telangana.

“This will be one of the largest FDIs that Telangana has attracted; Will indirectly support local business growth and facilitate job creation across IT operations, facilities management, data, and network security, network engineering, and much more,” he tweeted.

Through the data center region, Microsoft will enable opportunities for local businesses to innovate with Microsoft Cloud services in Hyderabad and across Telangana.

Telangana and Microsoft have earlier entered an MoU that will positively reinforce the state government’s capabilities to enhance its citizen service capabilities. Given the state’s technology-driven growth agenda around key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, law enforcement, and mobility, the Microsoft data centre in the region will push up the local growth.

“Today’s commitment to the people and businesses of India will position the country among the world’s digital leaders. A Microsoft data center region provides a competitive advantage to our digital economy and is a long-term investment in our country’s potential. The cloud is transforming every industry and sector. The investment in skilling will empower India’s workforce today and into the future,” said Chandrasekhar.

“Microsoft and Telangana go a long way back with Hyderabad hosting one of the largest Microsoft offices in the world and I am happy to see the relationship grow,” said Rama Rao.

Maheshwari noted that cloud services are poised to play a critical role in reimagining the future of business and governance and enabling overall inclusion in the country. “The new data center will augment Microsoft’s cloud capabilities and capacity to support those working across the country. It will also support new entrepreneurial opportunities while meeting critical security and compliance needs. The new data center region is a testament to our mission to empower the people and organizations of India to achieve more,” he said.

I-League: Mohammedan Sporting come from behind to defeat Sreenidi Deccan 3-1

0

Mohammedan Sporting has tried to maintain their hundred percent record this season in the ongoing I-League after coming from a goal behind to defeat Sreenidi Deccan 3-1 at the Naihati Stadium, here on Monday.

The Black and White Brigade ensured victory and all thanks to a brace from frontman Marcus Joseph and a spot-kick from Andelo Rudovic, which canceled out David Munoz’s first-half strike for Sreenidi Deccan. The victory consolidated Mohammedan Sporting’s lead at the top of the table with three wins from their first three matches.

Sreenidi Deccan opened the contest in an energetic fashion and laid the first blow on their opponents in the 16th minute when David Munoz picked up the ball after Mohammedan turned possession over in their half. The Colombian forward made them pay to full effect after producing a low drive from range which rifled into the bottom corner.

After taking the lead, Sreenidi Deccan applied more pressure on their opponents, sensing vulnerability in the Black and White Brigade’s ranks. The warning signs were there to be seen as David Munoz put the ball in the back of the net once again in the 27th minute, but his effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

After riding out Sreenidi Deccan’s continuous onslaught, the Black and White Brigade made their way back into the game through striker Marcus Joseph in the 40th minute.

Captain Nikola Stojanovic claimed the assist for the goal as it was his left-footed cross which was met by Joseph’s head inside the box, as the header nestled into the bottom-right corner of keeper Shibinraj Kunniyil’s goal.

With scores level going into the break, it took a moment of magic from Mohammedan Sporting in the 51st minute to turn the contest around on its head. It was Marcus Joseph again with the goods; this time with a humdinger of a strike from 30 yards that left goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil hapless as the ball arrowed past him like a bullet into the top corner.

Chasing a hat-trick, Marcus Joseph found himself in the thick of the action once again in the 68th minute. Joseph unselfishly laid the ball across into the path of his teammate SK Faiaz this time, but Shibinraj was equal to Faiaz’s effort as he tipped the ball over the bar.

Mohammedan Sporting confirmed their victory late in the contest after being awarded a penalty in the 88th minute. Andelo Rudovic; the man from Montenegro, stepped up from 12 yards and made no mistake as he slid the ball into the right corner to seal all three points for Mohammedan Sporting.

The table-toppers take on the Indian Arrows in their next fixture on March 12 while Sreenidi Deccan will come up against Real Kashmir FC on March 11.

How AI protected SME businesses from Covid-19 risks

Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled apps helped protect small and medium-sized businesses against many of the risks that emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a study, which noted that only a quarter of small firms currently use them.

The research, by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and published in the journal Information Systems Frontiers, surveyed 317 small and medium-sized firms based in London.

The study found the use of AI-powered apps was associated with a 3.1 percent reduced risk to business during the pandemic.

“We found that SMEs’ business risks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic declined with the use of AI applications across a ten-item scale including marketing, sales, communication, predictions, pricing, and cash flow, fake reviews, cybersecurity, recruitment, and legal services,” said lead author Professor Nick Drydakis, Director of the Centre for Pluralist Economics at the University.

“The outcomes proved true regardless of enterprise size, turnover, and years of operation, indicating that AI applications have helped SMEs to adapt to unprecedented conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

The Covid pandemic created risks for economies and business operations, with customers stopping, reducing, or postponing purchases, thereby affecting supply chains and resulting in difficulties in sourcing alternative suppliers.

In the study, business risks were defined by a 60-point scale developed by the International Labor Organisation (ILO) that measures the pandemic’s impact on staffing, processes such as working patterns, reduced profits, and threats to partnerships.

AI software utilized by businesses includes chatbots to allow swift interaction with customers, apps that identify damaging fake reviews, and apps that use algorithms to improve customer targeting based on their habits, social media activities and profiles, online activities, and past transactions.

The study found the use of AI apps to offer personalized shopping suggestions was associated with 2 percent lower business risks to profits caused by the Covid pandemic.

The use of AI apps to target audiences online was associated with a 1.2 percent lower overall business risk.

However, the research revealed that only 26 percent of small enterprises were utilizing AI applications, considerably lower than the 70.4 percent of medium-sized businesses.

“SMEs can invest in AI technologies to track users’ habits and provide recommendations, improve customer’s purchasing decisions, search results, media communication, trade raise sales, improve organizational performance, and lower costs,” Drydakis said.

Google pours $700 mn in Poland as it pulls out from Russia

0

As Google paused all ads sales in Russia amid the Ukraine invasion, the tech giant on Monday announced to invest nearly $700 million in the purchase and development of The Warsaw HUB, a modern office complex right in the heart of Poland’s capital city.

Google had moved into The Warsaw Hub as a tenant last year, opening a new office there – home to teams working primarily on its most advanced solutions powering Google Cloud and its many global customers.

“It is already our largest site working on cloud technologies in Europe. With this new investment, across our sites in Warsaw we will have the capacity for 2500 employees, with potential for future growth,” said Magdalena Kotlarczy, Country Director, Poland.

The company employs more than 1000 Googlers in the country.

“Only last year, we added over 350 people, opened our new office in Warsaw and launched a Google Cloud region – the first such investment not only in Poland but in Central and Eastern Europe,” Kotlarczy added.

Last week, Google announced it will provide $10 million to local organizations helping refugees from the war in Ukraine who arrive in Poland.

“The funding will support both immediate humanitarian efforts and assistance for refugees in the first weeks of their stay in Poland, as well as their longer-term needs,” it added.

After blocking Russian media outlets, Google last week said it paused all ad sales in the country in response to the ongoing Ukraine invasion.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine is both a tragedy and a humanitarian disaster in the making,” Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs at Google, wrote in a blog post.

Earlier, Google had indefinitely paused the monetization of Russian state-funded media such as RT and Sputnik across its platforms.

She also went on to add, “Thank you for making me part of this beautiful film.”

Shriya plays the character of Madhumathi in the film, which will have Kannada superstar Kichcha Sudeep playing a pivotal role. Sudeep plays an interesting character called Bharagava Bakshi in the film.

The film is expected to release simultaneously in seven languages, which is a first. Apart from Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi, the unit also plans to release the film in Odiya and Bengali as well.

Apple to lose $3 mn in iPhone sales daily after Russia pull out

0

Apple might lose at least $3 million in iPhone sales revenue daily or $1.14 billion annually as it announced to pull out from the Russian market in the wake of the Ukraine invasion.

According to estimates by Lithuania-based online shopping portal Burga, the amount is based on Apple’s latest recorded Russian market share and the company’s revenue from sales as of 2021.

“Apple’s exit in Russia puts a close to the rocky relationship between the two entities. Notably, Russia has in the past enacted questionable policies for companies like Apple to comply with. Apple had only recently adhered with a government mandate to open offices in Russia to offer online services there,” said the report.

Although Russia does not account for a significant revenue share for Apple products, the tech giant’s exit will likely leave a mark on its smartphone sales that have been growing in the country.

Data presented by Burga indicates that based on vendor, Apple accounts for 15 percent of the Russian smartphone sales to rank third overall.

South Korea’s Samsung occupies the top position with 34 percent followed by Xiaomi at the third spot at 26 percent.

Realme has a share of 8 percent, followed by Poco at 3 percent, while other smaller brands account for 14 percent, the Burga report mentioned.

Elsewhere, as of 2021, Russia’s smartphone sales stood at? 730 billion ($7.6 billion).

Apple’s revenue loss might be higher considering that Russia’s general smartphone sales income has risen steadily in the last few years.

As of 2020, the revenue stood at $5.93 billion, while in 2019, the figure was at $5.2 billion.

Overall, between 2014 and 2021, the figure has spiked almost 200 percent.

After Apple’s decision on Russia, the move has placed pressure on other brands like Samsung that have also stopped shipping products to the country.

“Consequently, the exit by the two manufacturers might be a window of expansion for Chinese operators that are likely to stay put. However, such firms might suffer the impact of any follow-up sanctions that can bar companies from operating in Russia using U.S. origin technology,” the report noted.

Ashneer saga an aberration, not the norm: BharatPe Co-founder Nakrani

0

Amid the Ashneer Grover-BharatPe tussle, the fintech platform’s co-founder Shashvat Nakrani has written a letter to employees, saying that the whole episode is an aberration and not the norm and the company will turn this crisis into an opportunity.

Stressing that the company has to acknowledge and address the areas of improvement and the most critical is “culture” and that’s “us”.

“As you all know, Ashneer Grover, my Co-founder, is no longer associated with BharatPe as an employee, a founder, or a director of the company. Ashneer sent in his resignation late night on March 01, 2022, to the Board, minutes after receiving the agenda of the Board meeting on the findings of the PwC report,” Nakrani said in the letter seen by an interview.

“Sadly, he has also gone ahead and tried to create a false narrative about the company that we have built together with the right spirit. While the content of the inquiry report is confidential and as a board member, I am not at liberty to disclose its findings, I am proud of the fact that our board acted quickly and decisively to uphold good corporate governance, he added.

“What is important to note is that this is an aberration and not the norm.”

Ashneer has quit BharatPe as the company accused him, his wife, and their relatives of massive financial irregularities to fund their lifestyles.

Nakrani said that it is time to now stop “rumors and innuendoes from distracting us and go back to building”.

“Time to do what we have done in the past and will do best. We owe this to the fine team that works here, our shareholders and this remarkable country that helps us prosper,: he wrote.

Nakrani said that BharatPe has the trust of merchants, consumers, an outstanding team, large capital reserves and the backing of the world’s most credible investors to achieve that.

“Over the next few weeks, you will hear many exciting things we are putting in place for our brilliant team,” he announced.

The Ashneer Grover-BharatPe tussle that hogged the limelight since January has brought to the fore the need to fix corporate governance while maintaining moral integrity at the very top in the burgeoning Indian startup ecosystem.

Samsung says cyber attack caused no personal data breach

0

Samsung Electronics said on Monday that a recent cyber-attack by a hacking group on its system did not cause major harm to its business and customers.

In a statement posted on the company’s internal forum, Samsung said no personal information of its customers and employees was stolen and there will be no impact on its business operation.

“There has been no personal data breach, although leaked information includes some source codes necessary to run the Galaxy phones,” Samsung said, without elaborating further.

On Saturday, South American hacking group Lapsus$ claimed it successfully hacked the tech giant’s system and obtained confidential data, including various source code related to authentication features, among others.

It claimed it leaked up to 190 gigabytes of stolen data online, available for download via torrent, reports Yonhap news agency.

The tech giant said it stepped up its security system to protect information as soon as it learned of the attempted hacking attack.

“We are looking for every means to stop additional data breaches and protect employees and customers. We sincerely apologize for causing concerns,” it said.

Meanwhile, Samsung has suspended shipments of all of its products to Russia.

“Due to the current geopolitical developments, shipments to Russia have been suspended,” reads a statement from an unnamed Samsung representative.

Modi urges Putin to hold direct talks with Zelensky

In a phone call that lasted for about 50 minutes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold direct talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky amid the ongoing Moscow-Kiev war, according to sources.

During the conversation, which is the second between Modi and Putin since Russia began its war on February 24, the President briefed the Prime Minister on the status of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian teams.

Modi also appreciated the Russian military’s announcement earlier in the day to hold fire and open humanitarian corridors in the four Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Kharkov, Sumy, and Mariupol.

The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Sumy at the earliest, to which Putin assured of all possible cooperation.

Also on Monday, the Prime Minister spoke to Zelensky and expressed deep concern about the ongoing conflict and resultant humanitarian crisis, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“(The) Prime Minister reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of violence and noted that India has always stood for peaceful resolution of issues and direct dialogue between the two parties,” it said.

According to the statement, Modi “thanked Ukrainian authorities for their facilitation in evacuating more than 20,000 Indian citizens from Ukraine”, but also expressed deep concern for the safety and security of Indian students still remaining in the war-torn nation and emphasized the need for their quick and safe evacuation.

The first time Modi and Zelensky spoke was on February 26, just two days after Russia launched its military invasion of Ukraine.

Sharwanand’s ‘Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu’ set for OTT release

Sharwnanad’s recent theatrical release ‘Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu’ will soon get released on the OTT platform.

Billed to be a family drama, ‘Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu’ hit the marquee on March 4 and opened to good reports.

So, the makers seem to have decided to release the movie online, and reports suggest SonyLIV will gear up for the premiere soon.

Normally, the OTT release for any movie is planned only after four weeks of its theatrical release. Keeping this constraint in consideration, it is believed that ‘Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu’ will be available from the first week of April.

However, this is just a tentative OTT release plan for now and official communication to this effect will be made in the due course.

With biggies like ‘Radhe Shyam’ and ‘RRR’ lined up for theatrical release in March, it is nearly impossible for the makers of ‘Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu’ to keep hold of theatres in the twin Telugu states.

‘Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu’ stars Sharwanand, Rashmika Mandanna, Khushbu, Radhika Sarathkumar, Urvashi, and others in lead roles.

Ukraine says fighting world’s first ‘hybrid war’

0

The Ukrainian government has revealed that it is fighting a ‘hybrid war’ where Russia-backed threat actors are hitting their internet networks while their armies are attacking physical infrastructure on the ground.

The country’s cyber-security authority said its cyber defenses are repelling most hacking attacks, adding that the cyber-war with Russia was unprecedented, the BBC reported.

“These two wars (we are fighting) are part of this hybrid war. This is happening for the first time in history and I believe that cyberwar can only be ended with the end of conventional war, and we will do everything we can to bring this moment closer,” said Viktor Zhora, Deputy Chairman of the State Service of Special Communications, during a press conference.

He added that his cyber security teams have been working to defend critical Ukrainian web services successfully.

“We are not afraid of Russian attacks” on power grids or nuclear sites, he said.

Since the Russian invasion began, the country has launched an “IT army of Ukraine”, which has been carrying out cyberattacks on Russian targets.

The Telegram group for the organization now has 2,70,000 members. However, the Ministry estimates that there could be as many as 4,00,000 hackers fighting online for Ukraine.

“We call it cyber-resistance and we’re doing everything possible to protect our land and cyberspace. We are trying to protect our networks and make the aggressor feel uncomfortable with its actions in cyberspace and on Ukrainian land,” Zhora added.

The cyberwar between Russia and Ukraine has intensified, with Russia using a new destructive malware to permanently destroy data on systems belonging to Ukrainian organizations.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to hacking groups increasing their activities globally.

While Russia-backed hackers have already hit several Ukrainian government websites and banks, a leading hacking group, Anonymous has declared itself aligned with “Western allies”, targeting operations in Russia.

“The Anonymous collective is officially in cyberwar against the Russian government,” the hacking group tweeted.

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its 12th day amid widespread cyber attacks, the citizens have turned to encrypted communication apps, offline maps, and Twitter to keep abreast with the latest news and connect with friends and families.

Since Russia has locked down access to news and social media, demand for VPN apps has also grown.
