Five people are in critical condition after an explosion in an apartment complex in the US state of Maryland’s Montgomery County, according to authorities.

One section of the four-story apartment complex, just several kilometers outside of Washington, D.C., was leveled into a pile of blackened, smoldering wreckage, reports Xinhua news agency.

Firefighters rushed to the scene at about 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, and they were able to help some residents escape before the building was consumed by fire and collapsed, according to Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein.

Goldstein also told reporters about 125 to 150 firefighters had responded to the scene, saying that “it’s too early to speculate” on a cause.

Seven or eight people have less serious injuries, and some of them were transported to the hospital, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said.

“This is obviously a really tragic event,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said later, adding that county officials would step in to offer shelter and other aid to residents of the apartments.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said that state officials were in contact with Montgomery County authorities to offer assistance.

Reddit blocks all links to Russian state media, bans ads

0

Online discussion forum ‘Reddit’ has categorically banned its users globally from posting links to Russian state-sponsored media outlets, including RT and Sputnik, as well as Russian advertisements on its platform.

Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Twitter, YouTube, and several other tech platforms have already banned RT and Sputnik in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“While many communities on Reddit already prohibited links to Russian state media outlets like RT, Sputnik, and their foreign language affiliates, we have made such restrictions universal across the site in all geographies,” the company said in a statement late on Thursday.

Furthermore, “We will continue not to accept advertisements that target Russia or originate from any Russia-based entity, government or private.”

Reddit said it is inactive contact with its moderators and communities “particularly those most affected by the conflict” to provide support, resources, and specialized tooling so they can continue to function without interference.

“We are also assisting affected Reddit colleagues in Ukraine, including providing advanced income payments and housing allowances, and supporting their relocation,” said the company.

Meta has already expanded a ban on Russian state media outlets — RT and Sputnik — on Facebook and Instagram globally to stop the flow of misinformation as Russian forces make deeper inroads into Ukraine.

Swedish music streaming giant Spotify has shut down its office in Russia and removed content from state-backed media outlets RT and Sputnik.

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov talks from war frontline

Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov (aRhino’) has issued a powerful statement from the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to Variety, the statement read: “In 2014, I was unlawfully imprisoned in Russia and sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for fighting against Putin regime and annexation of Crimea. Back then, the whole film industry stood up to support me. And I am immensely grateful for it. Now I’m asking you to support my country,” Sentsov said.

“Exactly two weeks ago, my movie, which I shot after I was out, was released in Ukraine. For a week now, I have been standing in the trenches as a participant of the territorial defence of Kiev, which is a part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Life has changed in an instant with the fall of the first bomb on the territory of Ukraine. Everything we knew about Hitler’s invasion has now become real again.”

“My motherland is mercilessly shelled from the land, sea, and air. Russian bombs are falling on Ukrainian children. Millions are sitting in bomb shelters. Millions are suffering from cold and lacking food. My country is being ruined, but our spirit is strong. We are going to fight until our victory.”

“For this, we need your support. The support of intellectuals and artists who oppose Putin’s bloody regime. People who value human life more than anything. I request your support for the boycott of Russian cinematography in all dimensions, including film cooperation: co-production, distribution, and festivals, as requested by the Ukrainian Film Academy. Please sign the petition!”

“Stand with Ukraine! We will stop Putin together!” the statement said.

Sentsov has also shared a video shot earlier this week, the location of which cannot be revealed for security reasons.

Indian scientists refute US researchers’ claim of radio wave signal from cosmic dawn

0

Indian researchers have refuted a recent claim of the discovery of a radio wave signal from cosmic dawn, the time in the infancy of the Universe when the first stars and galaxies came into existence, an official statement said on Thursday.

A team of researchers from Arizona State University (ASU) and MIT in the US had in 2018 detected a signal from stars emerging in the early universe using data from the EDGES radio telescope. The study published in the journal Nature had then created much excitement in the astronomy community around the world.

The ASU/MIT team had claimed the discovery of a radio wave signaling the birth of the first stars, which was also hailed by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb as worthy of two Nobel prizes. However, the world awaited confirmation from independent researchers.

“Utilising the indigenously invented and built SARAS 3 radio telescope, researchers from Raman Research Institute, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology refuted this claim,” a release from the Ministry of Science & Technology said.

The SARAS 3 radio telescope invented and built by the astronomers at the RRI is the first telescope worldwide to reach the required sensitivity. The signal claimed to have been detected by the ASU/MIT team required exotic and non-standard physics and caused astrophysicists worldwide to invent new theories, which are all now redundant.

“This research of the Raman Research Institute restores confidence in our understanding of the evolving Universe, re-establishing the prevailing cosmological model of the cosmos,” it said.

The RRI findings are now published in Nature Astronomy.

SARAS is a niche high-risk high-gain experimental effort of the RRI initiated and led by Professor Ravi Subrahmanyan, along with Professor N. Udaya Shankar. It was a courageous attempt to design, build and deploy in India a precision radio telescope to detect extremely faint radio wave signals from the depths of time, from our “Cosmic Dawn” when the first stars and galaxies formed in the early Universe.

The CMB Distortion Laboratory at RRI has pioneered the development of state-of-the-art radio telescopes which are designed to detect faint cosmological signals, especially radiation emitted by hydrogen atoms at the 21-cm wavelength (1.4 GHz) arising from the depths of the cosmos.

The signal from Cosmic Dawn is expected to arrive on Earth stretched in wavelength to meters and lowered in frequency by the expansion of the Universe to lie in the radio frequency band 50-200 MHz.

“Detecting a faint signal from such an early period of the Universe is extremely difficult. The celestial signal is exceptionally faint – buried in sky radio waves that come to us from the gas in our own Galaxy, the Milky Way, which are a million times brighter,” the release said.

Besides, this cosmic signal is in a radio wavelength band used by numerous terrestrial communications equipment and TV and FM radio stations, which makes detecting the extra-terrestrial signal extremely difficult, it added.

However, RRI scientists and engineers have risen to the challenge and designed and calibrated the SARAS radio telescope to discern signals from Cosmic Dawn. It is one of the most sensitive instruments in the world in this field of research today.

After a rigorous statistical analysis led by Dr. Saurabh Singh, a research scientist at RRI, SARAS 3 did not find any evidence of the signal claimed by the EDGES experiment. The presence of the signal is decisively rejected after a careful assessment of the measurement uncertainties.

Therefore, the finding implies that the detection reported by EDGES was likely contamination of their measurement and not a signal from the depths of space and time. SARAS 3 was indeed the first experiment to reach the required sensitivity and cross-verify the claim of the signal detection, the release added.

Sunny Leone: I’m emotionally attached to ‘Anamika’

Actress and TV host Sunny Leone, who is coming up with her new web series ‘Anamika’ directed by Vikram Bhatt, says that the show presents “Sunny Leone 2.0” to the audience.

Meta has expanded a ban on Russian state media outlets RT and Sputnik on Facebook and Instagram globally to stop the flow of misinformation as Russian forces make deeper inroads into Ukraine.

In addition to restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the European Union, the company announced to “globally demote content from Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts from Russian state-controlled media outlets and make them harder to find across our platforms”.

“We have also begun to demote posts that contain links to Russian state-controlled media websites on Facebook,” Meta said in a statement.

In the days ahead, “we will label these links and provide more information to people before they share or click on them to let them know that they lead to Russian state-controlled media websites. We plan on putting similar measures in place on Instagram”.

The company is already labeling Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts from Russian state-controlled media outlets so people know where this information comes from.

“By providing this additional transparency, we aim to give people more context if they want to share direct links to Russian state-controlled media websites or when others see someone’s post that contains a link to one of these sites,” it added.

Most Big Tech platforms like Meta, Twitter, Google (and YouTube), and Microsoft have banned Russian state media outlets in the wake of the Ukraine invasion.

Meta said that since February 23, more than $20 million has been raised for nonprofits on Facebook and Instagram in support of humanitarian efforts for Ukraine.

“We’ve also seen Facebook Groups created to help those in need, including a group of 200,000 Romanian volunteers and donors coordinating transportation and accommodations for refugees. And a group of more than 300,000 in Poland is offering housing, clothing, medication, and rides from the border to help those in need,” the company informed.

As part of its ‘Data for Good’ program, Meta is making aggregated data on social connections available to trusted organizations working to provide medical services and support to refugees, like Direct Relief.

TikTok under probe for its effect on kids’ health in US

0

A coalition of state attorneys general in the US has launched a nationwide investigation into whether TikTok is designing, operating, and promoting its social media platform to children, teens, and young adults in a manner that causes or exacerbates physical and mental health harm.

Attorneys general nationwide is examining whether the company violated state consumer protection laws and put the public at risk.

Attorney General Maura Healey, along with her colleagues across the country, has long expressed concern about the negative impact of social media platforms on Massachusetts’s youngest residents.

“As children and teens already grapple with issues of anxiety, social pressure, and depression, we cannot allow social media to further harm their physical health and mental wellbeing,” AG Healey said in a statement.

“State attorneys general have an imperative to protect young people and seek more information about how companies like TikTok are influencing their daily lives,” AG Healey added.

The investigation will look into the harm such usage may cause to young people and what TikTok knew about that harm. The investigation focuses, among other things, on the methods and techniques utilized by TikTok to boost young user engagement, including increasing the duration of time spent on the platform and frequency of engagement with the platform.

In May 2021, a bipartisan coalition of 44 attorneys general urged Facebook to abandon its plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under 13. In November 2021, AG Healey announced her leadership of a nationwide investigation into Meta Platforms, Inc., formerly known as Facebook, for providing and promoting its social media platform Instagram to kids.

Leading the investigation into TikTok is a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Vermont. They are joined by a broad group of attorneys general from across the country.

Google tells employees to return to offices in US

0

Tech giant Google said it will end the voluntary work-from-home period and start having employees in the Bay Area and several other US locations return to the office starting the week of April 4.

“It’s been a long and challenging two years since the vast majority of our people started working from home,” wrote John Casey, Google’s vice president of global benefits in an email to employees that was viewed by CNBC.

“But the advances in prevention and treatment, the steady decline in cases that we continue to see, and the improved safety measures we have implemented across our Bay Area site now mean we can officially begin the transition to the hybrid work week,” Casey added.

Casey said other offices in the US and elsewhere will begin to return based on local conditions, the report said.

Google’s latest guidance comes a week after CNBC reported that the company had been relaxing some of its Covid-19 mandates in preparation for a return.

At the time, the company had not determined a new date for the official return since it last pushed off its January 10 deadline amid the omicron surge.

Google said it expects most workers to come to the office three days a week and have two days of remote work.

The note from Casey included previously reported guidelines such as dropping the mask mandate and testing mandates for fully vaccinated employees as well as the reopening of amenities such as cafes, restaurants, massages, and shuttles.

Employees entering physical workspaces still must either be fully vaccinated or have an approved accommodation.

Casey wrote that the company will be testing new ways of working and will “gather insights, data, and feedback along the way”.

YouTube creators contributed Rs 6,800 cr to Indian economy in 2020

0

YouTube’s growing creator ecosystem is generating considerable economic value for the Indian market and contributed Rs 6,800 crore to the country’s GDP while supporting 6.83 lakh full-time equivalent jobs in 2020, the Google-owned platform said on Thursday.

With the number of channels in India with more than 100,000 subscribers now at 40,000, marking a growth of more than 45 percent (on-year), more Indian creators are finding opportunities and audiences on YouTube, often leading to new doorways away from the platform, according to a new report by Oxford Economics that assessed YouTube’s economic, societal and cultural impact in the country.

“The creator economy in the country has the potential to emerge as a soft-power impacting economic growth, job creation and even cultural influence,” said Ajay Vidyasagar, Regional Director, APAC, YouTube Partnerships.

In addition to the revenue generated on YouTube, a creator’s presence on the platform can help them get a global fanbase, push boundaries and explore multiple revenue streams through brand partnerships, live performance, etc.

In India, more than 80 percent of creative entrepreneurs said the platform has had a positive impact on their professional goals.

With eight different ways to monetize content on the platform, the number of YouTube channels making six figures or more in revenue is up more than 60 percent (on-year).

“Our research shows that YouTube fosters significant positive impact for Indian creators in terms of helping them achieve their professional goals and grow their businesses, said Adrian Cooper, CEO, Oxford Economics.

Nearly 92 percent of small and medium businesses with a YouTube channel agreed that the platform helps them reach new audiences across the world.

“As our creators and artists build the next generation of media companies that are connecting with a global audience, their impact on the economy’s overall success will only continue to accelerate,” said Vidyasagar.
